7:42 a.m. - At this moment, I'm listening to an online rules meeting presentation for Iowa high school softball. For each sport I officiating - volleyball, basketball, and softball - I have to watch an online rules meeting and take an exam. So it's six rules meetings and six exams every year. Yes, it's a pain in the butt. I'm not opposed to completing one for each sport to brush up on the new rules and be ready for the season. Completing two, though, irritates me. Softball starts this coming week for Illinois and at the end of April for Iowa.
Yesterday was okay. I was able to get through the rest of the essays, so that's good news. I discovered several essays that were AI generated. It's becoming increasingly difficult to have students just do their own work with their own thoughts. Students either don't feel it's necessary or just don't care if they submit work that isn't their own. I wonder if that's where the world is headed. Instead of using our own brains to solve problems and express viewpoints, we just log into a computer and let the computer take over. That scares me a bit. In all of the AI essays that were discovered, not one student attempted to deny her/his action. I've decided that this year I just assign a "D" and allow no revisions. This is because our student handbook doesn't address AI usage as plagiarism or cheating. I think that will get changed next year. The other idea I'm considering is just making the formal essay assignments in-class tests and require the students to write the essays in class with paper and pen.
After school, Amber and I went to the casino and had supper. Supper was good; gambling was not. I lost, but Amber won a little.
Today is a beautiful sunny day, but it's cold. I think I may take Sophie for a walk and then run some errands. I need to pick up some dirt, and I need to pick up a new battery for the tractor. I also may get some things out of the storage shed for the upcoming spring/summer season. Tonight we turn the clocks forward...more sunlight for softball next week!
I'm not sure what else is happening today, but maybe I'll watch some IHSA boys basketball championship games along with some college basketball.
