6:01 a.m. - Well, I finished scoring the essays of two classes; now I just have two more to complete. Scoring essays in today's world is more time consuming because of artificial intelligence technology that is finding its way into students' hands. Hopefully, I can plug away at the remaining essays today, so I don't have to mess with them over the weekend. With the English III classes, we also were able to get through The Raven, and I was able to maintain my sanity. The boys IHSA basketball state finals were yesterday for 1A and 2A. I knew a couple of the officials that were assigned the finals this year. I honestly didn't want much of the games, but the scores all were fairly close.
The afternoon was eventful. Chase got a phone call through to me, which was great. Then, I attended the facilitation meeting for the potential new school plans. In a shocking development, the group reviewed information that revealed that the district needs to consider building a new school rather than continuing to pour too much money into existing schools that aren't conducive to education in today's world. The information also considered whether that new school for all the district's elementary students should be built in Edgington or Andalusia. Of course, I described this information as "shocking", to curb my sarcasm. This whole community engagement process was always going to come down to the very decisions that were presented last night. What was interesting to hear was the conversation about getting the votes to pass the referendum to move the decision forward. I still don't really understand why a referendum is needed to approve building a new school if an increase in taxes isn't going to happen. I personally don't disapprove of attempting to involve the community to gain input, but I also think the BOE is elected to make the final decision. This decision was always going to be the decision. Plus, there really isn't a discussion about what the new school would look like and what it would include. I think the whole thing is a sell job by the firm that's conducting the community engagement process. I think this firm is going to make a lot of money taking the community through this process and then being selected as the project leader. I know I'm a pessimistic old fart, but it just gripes me to see the decision making process completed just for the sake of gaining input when there really was not much disagreement in the eventual decision to begin with.
The weather is rainy today, and the temps will be cool all weekend. I had talked with Mr. Strachan about maybe breaking out the campers and doing some washing, but it's just not going to be very nice weather for that sort of thing this weekend. I guess it is March after all. So let's get through today, take Amber out for some supper this evening, and have a nice weekend.
