Sunday, March 31 - Easter

7:15 a.m. - For Christians, today is an important day in their faith.  It is the belief that, apparently, the light has overcome the darkness...in one source calling the "cornerstone of the religion that faith leads to transformation - ascending from Earth to Heaven".  Easter, then, is a rebirth or a new day or perhaps just a signal that eventually life can return - hope can be restored.  It's a great message...a message that each day brings light and brings the opportunity for something special.  There's a strong message of positivity, and that's a message I can grasp - the idea that good can possibly rise from bad.  I'm not sure that I believe in all the details of the stories of the Bible, but the message of the power of positive thinking and grace towards others is a good one.

Yesterday we had an Easter breakfast and egg hunt for Amber's girls and their families.  The food was awesome; I ate too much.  Once again I'm pretty confident I'll be exiting a school break heavier than what I entered.  Geez, I need to get a handle on enjoying food too much.  There was ham and eggs and biscuits and gravy and hash browns and cinnamon rolls - good stuff.  Then the egg hunt occurred, and it appeared that the kids had fun.  Then we sat and watched the kids play and visited for awhile before gradually they all headed off in their separate directions.  Another Easter holiday celebration in the books.

Later in the day, I went to Marcus Bush's birthday party in East Moline.  He turns 40 apparently on Monday.  He likes to remind me that he was born the same year as I graduated from high school.  I sat for awhile with my eye on the television watching the Iowa women basketball team win.  Brian and Becky Hutton were there, and I haven't seen them in awhile.  It was great to talk basketball with them and catch up on how things are going in their lives.  On my way home, I stopped at the farm and visited with Mom and Dad.  We watched a the first half of the Illinois men's game, and when I left at have time, Illinois was trailing 28-23 to the University of Connecticut.  Maybe I should have stayed at the farm because the Huskies scored the next 30 points of the game to blow out the Illini in embarrassing fashion.  It was really hard to watch.  Illinois just got down and couldn't do anything right, and the game was over before the second half even really got started.  Ugh.

This morning I'm going to try to exercise a little.  I checked the mouse trap in the camper, because we have a mouse in there.  It's intelligent, and apparently I'm not.  It's cleaned the mouse trap two nights in a row.  I'm going to try a sticky trap next.  I just hope it's not tearing up anything in there that isn't easily seen - like wiring.  I may also pick up some new traps.  I can't believe that thing has successfully eaten the bait two nights in a row and not sprung that trap.

I think later today we are supposed to go to Jack and Rhonda's for lunch and then over to my Aunt Mary's - probably for more lunch.  More food isn't exactly what I need, but we'll be expected to eat something.  I guess there are worse problems to deal with.

Saturday, March 30

6:46 a.m. - Happy Easter Eve!  We are having all of Amber's girls and their families over this morning for breakfast and an Easter egg hunt, so this report will be brief, as the Easter Bunny hasn't yet visited to hide the eggs.  We got a lot of rain last night, so the Easter Bunny is trying to get the sun to come up to dry things out a bit before the eggs are deposited.

Yesterday was a day I needed.  It was just me...didn't even turn on the radio...driving a country drive to Fort Madison to see Carmen and Tyler and their dog Arlo.  Carmen's pregnancy is going well...all systems and indicators and good.  It's been a bit of a non-relaxing break, so to just get a chance to be by myself in my thoughts was good.  And I always enjoy driving in rural areas...helps me forget all the business of life.

So today will be busy this morning, and I want to watch Illinois play basketball in the Elite Eight game.  Other than that, I'm not sure what is on the schedule.  I'd like to get a walk in if we are going to get a good weather day; sounds like the rest of the weekend is going to be more rain.

Friday, March 29

7:19 a.m. - Yesterday was different.  The Harrison grandchildren were here, so after breakfast, we got dressed and went outside to do some yard work.  We picked up sticks, and then while the kids played, I got the battery installed in the lawnmower.  After that, we worked on the flower bed.  Then the kids had to go home, and I mowed the yard and finished work on the flower bed.  It just felt good to be outside with some decent weather, and I was looking forward to working a softball game at Mercer County.  About 3:00 p.m., though, I received a call from the Mercer County coach that Erie-Prophetstown had to cancel because there had been a auto accident in their school district involving students.  I later found out that the students are from the Prophetstown school district.  Apparently a truck collided with a semi, and now I'm wondering if the students were headed home from school.  That's going to be a tough weekend for those families.  So with that tragic news, I stayed home and the Southwell grandchildren arrived.  We visited a bit with Pat and Kourtney, and then it was just Tucker, Ava, and Rosie.  They were all pretty nice to me and let me watch basketball.  There were upsets, but the biggest game of the night was when Illinois held on to beat Iowa State and reach the Elite 8.  I was worried about the Illini, especially when its best player got in foul trouble in the second half.  I don't think Iowa State played very well offensively, but Illinois also played pretty good defense.

Today I'm headed to Fort Madison to visit with Carmen and Tyler.  I really don't know much about what we are going to do, I just know I'm planning on arriving about 10 a.m.  Amber can't go, and I asked my mom if she wanted to go, but she has a meeting she needs to attend, so I'll make the trip solo.  It will be nice to visit Carmen and Tyler and of course their dog Arlo.  I'll get back tonight and watch a little more basketball.

We are expecting rain and storms, so I think I'll put the slides in on the camper.  Amber said to do that anyway because we are hosting an egg hunt on Saturday morning for the Southwell and Harrison grandchildren and putting the slides in will free up some room.  To be honest, the Easter bunny will also have some more spots to hide eggs.

This is the last day of Spring Break, and it's been a weird one.  The weather hasn't cooperated; I haven't worked any softball; and yet, I have gotten some things done that needed to get done.  I guess there just hasn't been much "fun", which is too bad.  Sometimes, that's just how time goes, though.  I am feeling blessed that most of what really needed to get done did indeed get accomplished.

Thursday, March 28

7;39 a.m. - Yesterday I thought I was supposed to umpire.  I was not.  It's today that I'm supposed to umpire.  Better today than yesterday, as yesterday's temps were not good.  It was another raw, windy, cold day.  And while I thought this was a bad thing, it turns out that the cold temps weren't all that bad, as the ground stayed a little hard and frozen while Mr. Strachan helped me get the camper out of storage and to the side of our house.  Getting out of storage wasn't all that difficult; it was just a process.  We had to get his camper out first, and then we got the eagle out.  He also helped me air up the tire pressure in all of the tires, which was very nice of him.  We did end up discovering that at least one mouse called the camper home for at least a little while over the winter.  I meant to set a trap in the camper last night, but I didn't get that done.  I'll try to do that this evening.  Anyway, back to the ground...because the ground was frozen, I didn't mess it up so badly as I would have with warm temperatures.  The rain from the previous day had really softened the ground up.  So maybe all the cold and wind was good for at least one thing.

Amber and I worked on getting the camper cleaned and opened up and all of the stuff in the storage tubs back into the camper.  That's a bit of a job in itself.  We had help, though.  The Harrison grandchildren enjoyed being in the camper, as they were with us all day and spent the night as well.  As I'm typing away, they are now stirring and getting some breakfast.  Something else camping related that I got done yesterday was to finalize what I hope is the last of reservations for our summer trip.  I was able to bump back our previous final two days at Flying Goose in Fairmont, Minnesota, in order to make room for two more days in Walker, Minnesota, at a place called the Trails RV Resort.  That little revisions extends our total adventure to make it July 5 through July 21.

Yesterday afternoon also featured Karrigan and her three dogs.  Needless to say, the afternoon was full of energy in the house.

The weather today is supposed to be warmer...at least reaching the upper 50's.  I really need to get the mower up and running and mow the backyard.  Maybe I can accomplish that pending the departure date of the Harrison kids.  Tomorrow I'm headed down to Fort Madison to visit with Tyler and Carmen, so that will be fun.  While I've gotten some things accomplished during this Spring Break, I really haven't had a whole lot of fun.  Oh, the Illini play against Iowa State tonight, so I want to get back from umpiring in time to watch that.

Wednesday, March 27

6:30 a.m. - This weather is TERRIBLE.  I can't wait any longer, so I'm going to fight these stupid cold March temperatures and get the camper out.  I'm afraid if I don't do it today, I will have even more trouble getting it out before the first scheduled camping weekend which is April 5-6.  In taking a peek at that weekend, if the weather forecast holds, the weekend is shaping up to be pretty good.  Now I just have to figure out how to get there.  I'll probably leave the camper hooked up to the truck today and try to let the ground dry out a bit.  Maybe I can attempt to park it back beside the house tomorrow if there is a dry day today.  The problem is that this weekend is Easter weekend, and there will be a lot going on, so I'm just going to dress warmly and give it a go today.

Yesterday was an okay day, but the weather dictated most of the day.  It was just wet and cold and rainy.  Amber and I went and did some errands and then venture over to the Isle casino.  She won; I lost.  That's not all that surprising.  Then we came back home, and I was on the computer trying to figure out how to revise our summer camping get-a-way.  I think I have it figured out.  I just need to get something confirmed from an RV park in Minnesota, and then I'll be set again.  Apparently Karrigan and Michael are going to be in Minnesota while we are there, so Amber wanted to see if we could be nearby for a couple of nights.  I got it done.  What's another hundred dollars in camping site fees along with a couple of extra days on the road.  So we'll be leaving on July 5 and won't get back until July 20.  I'm interested to see how that goes.

I'm supposed to have a softball game today.  If we play, it will be very cold, but that's pretty much how the softball season has been so far anyway.  Yesterday, by the way, we went to the Southwells.  We took a chair to them, and I picked up and exercise bike for her.  I'm not sure it's going to work out, but I'll give it a try.  Maybe I can do that later today after we get the camper out.

Have I complained about the weather enough yet?  I guess one other thing I did accomplish yesterday was to replant the two plants I wanted to work on.  We received a plant for Christmas, and then I purchased a poinsettia for Christmas, and I'm working on keeping both them going, so they both needed to be transferred to a bigger pot.  So I worked on that in the garage.

Tuesday, March 26

7:38 a.m. - I got the colonoscopy completed yesterday.  Thank goodness that is over for another three years.  I only had one polyp removed, so that's good.  Apparently I'm improving.  I was still tired yesterday and had a lot of air in my belly in the morning, but I got through it.  I'm still not "regular", but that may take a day or two.  Later in the day I went to Mutual Wheel to schedule the camper for some work.  I'm a little worried about the potential cost of that, but I need the peace of mind of getting the wheels checked out and maintained, so I'm going to do it.

Today the weather is downright crappy, so I'm going to go with Amber while she runs some errands, and then we are headed over to Iowa to a casino.  I'm not quite sure which one we are going to, and I really shouldn't spend the money on a casino, but I don't want to stay home all day, and there isn't anything to do outside in this weather.  I'm going to get the camper out tomorrow out of storage even though the weather is going to be cold.  Maybe I can spend some time with the Eagle, and it will help me feel better about this stupid weather.

Monday, March 25

6:53 a.m. - Yesterday at 1 p.m. I started my colonoscopy prep...ugh.  Many trips to the bathroom later, the pipes are cleaned out and ready for inspection.  We'll be leaving in a bit to head to get it done.  I'm dehydrated and tired, but I'll survive.

In the morning, we went to church service.  During service I think I had a revelation that I just am unable to wrap my brain around religion.  Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be though.

In the afternoon and evening, I watched basketball.  There were some good games, and there were some lopsided games.  I guess if a person has to do a colonoscopy prep day, it's nice that there is a lot of basketball on television.

I'm not sure what I'm doing today.  I'll probably rest a bit, and I'm definitely going to enjoy eating something.

Sunday, March 24

7:58 a.m. - Sunday, March 24 -- I was a lazy cat yesterday.  Amber went to Chicago, and I ventured out a little in the morning and then sat in my recliner and watched college basketball.  I started the day going to the Farmer's Market where I got a refill on Kambucha.  Then it was off to HyVee to pick up some groceries along with my colonoscopy prep ingredients.  Then I stopped by the casino where I could have walked out with some winnings but ended up putting it all back in.  After that I dropped off the groceries at home and headed over to the farm to visit with Darren.  He was there with mom and dad, of course, but also Peyton and Peyton's girlfriend arrived, so I visited with them too.  And then it was back home.  Illinois played really well, and Iowa State played well.  They advanced to the Sweet 16, but now they play each other.  Both teams play really hard, so it will be an interesting game.

Today, I'm headed to church service - mostly to watch Brinley and Brooklyn sing.  And then it's back home to start the prep work for tomorrow morning's procedure which is scheduled to take place about this time tomorrow morning.  Colonoscopy prep isn't pretty, but the pipes have to be cleaned out to let the doc see what's in there - hopefully no polyps this time.  And especially hoping nothing more serious than perhaps a polyp or two.   The good news is that between trips to the toilet, I'll at least be able to continue to watch basketball.

Saturday, March 23rd

7:20 a.m. - The things for school list being empty below is a nice site.  The weather isn't such a great site with cold temps today and possible snow tonight, but at least it's time for a little break.  Amber is already up and gone - she and her friend Deanna are headed for a day trip to Chicago.  Apparently it's fun to spend the morning riding a train to Chicago and then walking around and then riding a train back.  That's not my kind of fun, so it's good that she gets to go and do her thing, and I'll stay here and do my thing.  And my thing is going to be running some errands this morning and then watching some basketball - watching a lot of basketball.  The Illini don't play until later today, so that's even better.  One of my errands is running into Walgreen's and picking up the colonoscopy prep supplies. That's not necessarily going to be the highlight of my day.  On the other hand, it needs to get done, so no sense in stressing too much over it.  Clean out the pipes with some gatorade and laxative and then let the doctor check out the pipes and remove any polyps that may have surfaced since the last procedure three years ago.  It's hell to get old.

Yesterday went fine.  The day itself featured a lot of student absences, and I had something for a lesson that was doable but didn't cause me any extra work.  I also finished up all the scoring of assignments that needed to take place.  The best news of the day was that my softball double-header at Knoxville today was canceled.  I wasn't looking forward to that at all in these cold temperatures, and I'd rather stay home and watch basketball.  And then last night, that's what I did.  There were a couple more upsets, so that's always fun to watch.

Friday, March 22

6:24 a.m. - Today it's supposed to snow.  Perfect!  Today is the last day of school before Spring Break.  Well, at least I don't have softball umpiring today.  Even if I did, we probably wouldn't be playing.  Tomorrow, I'm scheduled for a double-header at Knoxville.  I think it's safe to say I wouldn't mind that getting postponed.

Yesterday was a tough day mentally.  The juniors completed the Illinois Science Assessment, and unfortunately I was directed to help supervise.  The whole thing was just bad.  In fact, the entire experience magnified education done wrong.  I felt compelled to at least take a shot at the students in between sessions one and two to attempt to inspire them to try their best, but it was pretty much a shot in the dark.  Group students into an auditorium without a seating arrangement, tell them to take an assessment of which they have had very little preparation, don't use any of the data that won't be accessible for nearly a year - data that won't be reliable anyway, watch students just click buttons to get done, and never offer an incentive or reward for good or bad performance.  The school, though, checked the box that the test was delivered, and the students completed a graduation requirement.  That, my friends, is education done bad.

Today, many students won't show up.  I'm not going to fight it.  I got my papers graded yesterday, so I will hand them back.  We'll complete a journal write and allow the students that are in attendance to share for extra credit.  Then I'll preview the project they will be completing after the last of the presenters visit the week after Spring Break.  It's a reasonable lesson for a Friday before Spring Break.  Tonight, I plan to watch basketball since its Day 2 of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.  Last night the big upset was Oakland over Kentucky.  It's always good to see Kentucky get beat.

Thursday, March 21

6:22 a.m. - I can't remember being so cold on a softball field as I was last night.  We started at 4:30 p.m. with temperature at 42 degrees.  Other schools around us postponed their games, but apparently the feels like temperature in Sherrard must have been warmer, even though it was windy too.  I had on a t-shirt, long-sleeeve shirt, light coat, and heavy coat, tights, pants, gloves, and my winter head gear....all of that, and by the end of the night I was so cold I could barely move.  Sterling had a separate bus arrive later with a full team, but we umpires had been informed that we were only going to play 2-3 innings of fresh-soph, so the Sterling people were upset.  So after the lengthy varsity game, guess what...IT DIDN'T GET WARMER.  I got back in the car, and my car temp said 37 degrees.  While out there, I found myself asking, "Why do you want to play in this weather?"  And the even better news is that I'm schedule do go to Galesburg today, and the temps are supposed to be about the same or colder.  I am so tired, and I know it's from being out in that cold weather and wind.  Oh well...I guess I'll sleep more when I'm dead.  The good news about that I saw on the news is that life expectancy raised this year!  Yay!  Now the average life expectancy is 76.5 years old.  Apparently that's a year longer than last year's rating.  So I have about 18 years left?  That doesn't sound like much time.  Maybe I can work to beat the average....standing out in the cold weather likely won't help!

The rest of yesterday went okay.  The representative from Monmouth College was good.  Today, students complete the Illinois Science Assessment, so it will be a bit of a weird day.  Tomorrow there is no rep visiting as well, and apparently now Mrs. Bohnsack doesn't need to meet with the students, so I'll have them tomorrow.  It won't be a great lesson plan, but that's okay.  I still have a goal of having nothing to grade going into Spring Break.

Wednesday, March 20

5:47 a.m. - Sheesh I'm tired.  Being out in that cold and wind last night for softball took some energy out of me, and I'm still tired from that long hike on Sunday.  Spring Break can't come soon enough.  The rest of the day went fine.  I was fairly productive in scoring assignments and the presenter from WIU did fine.  Today is Monmouth College, and she generally does a good job too.  Tomorrow there is science testing, so I don't have anything planned for the students.  Friday, Mrs. Bohnsack is supposed to be speaking with the students, so I don't have anything planned for that either.  I suppose I could push out the template to the training path presentation project that the students have after break.
