Wednesday, September 30

4:47 a.m. - Yesterday was okay.  The day started with an IEP meeting that was a play-based meeting for a young student.  Then I was able to get some paperwork items completed.  Also the ROE visited with an employee of the month recognition.  In the afternoon, I got in an informal evaluation, and then after school it was back to East Moline Christian for volleyball.  I had my first 5-set volleyball match I've had in awhile, so I got home later than I had hoped.  I thought about staying up for the Cubs playoff game, but I'm glad I didn't - the Cubbies got beat by San Diego 8-0.  

Today...more rain...lots of rain.  And tomorrow...lots of rain.  The weekend is still looking good for camping, so that's still good.  I've got to get my basketball officiating stuff out too!  My first basketball game is a junior high girls game at Sherrard.  Let's see how the old legs do with this.  Today I have a student council meeting, and later I have 504 meetings that I've been trying to get in for about a month.  Just keep swimming.

Tuesday, September 29

4:54 a.m. - The weather is still looking okay for this weekend, but Thursday is looking like a rain day all day.  The camping weekend is still a go, and I have a campsite reserved for Friday and Saturday nights.  Plus, the truck is getting an oil change today, so it will be ready to go.  

Yesterday was a weird day.  Well, let's say yesterday was a busy day with a weird incident.  Just before one o'clock, a message was sent to our office at IC Elementary as well as the other district admin that a 911 call had been made from IC Elementary.  I was sure what to do, and then we received another message that was the same thing.  Now I had other district admin calling us, and I still didn't have an answer.  So then I put the building on hold and went up and down the building trying to see if there was something going on.  The messages still kept coming every two minutes, but no one was reporting to me that they had called 911.  Finally I got a message where the call was coming from, and it was coming from a school phone in Room 24, which is our special education room.  I checked down there, and there were no students in the room and the two adults reported that they had not made the call.  I checked around the outside of the building, and now Mr. Bush was calling me.  I ended up getting six notification calls, and we had no idea why the phone in Room 24 seemed to be calling 911.  Jon Lehtola told me to unplug the phone, so I did, and the notification messages stopped.  Is there a ghost in the building?  Apparently 911 service was never contacted, the messages just went out to the district offices.  Weird.  As of now, that phone is still unplugged.

Last night we had volleyball at East Moline Christian.  Other than the match starting 30 minutes later than I was told, the night went fine.  After getting home, Amber helped me get the truck to Slaydens, and Sophie decided she needed to go.  Sophie is now hear spending the week with us here at Gigi's house.  And then after getting home, I ate my sandwiches from Jimmy John's and watched the Bears.  While I fell to sleep in the second half, the Bears did win 27-7 over the Eagles.  And they did that with a third string quarterback!

And today....who knows what will happen?  I am going to East Moline Christian again to officiate volleyball.  I have a few little things to attend to in the building, and hopefully the ghost won't be back to mess with the phone system again.

Monday, September 28

4:56 a.m. - Yesterday wasn't dull.  I got some exercise in, and then I did some work on the mower cleaning the mower deck before going on a bike ride with Brinley and Brooklyn.  Then the three of us went to Grandma Cathy's to visit and check on them and grab my things that she had borrowed for the church last weekend.  Then it was back home to mow the yard. After that, Kollyns and Karrigan arrived and we had some lunch - chili!  I got in the hot tub to relax a bit, and then it was off to Fort Madison to see the Hoenigs and wish Carmen a Happy Birthday.  I got home around 9:30 and went to bed.  It was fun to spend some time with Caleb as he is full of energy!

And on to today.  This week at school looks not as busy as list week.  That's welcomed.  And the weather this weekend is looking favorable for getting the camper out.   And in fact, I just purchased the campsite for the weekend!

Sunday, September 27

6:37 a.m. - Yesterday had a good start.  I got in the hot tub and got myself over to help start and support the PTO Fun Run.  They had a good turnout!  Mr. Bush did show, so I didn't have to do much more than clap and cheer on the runners.  It was good for him to be out there.  After that I headed to Aledo to watch the Harrison girls cheer.  After that I stopped by the Mercer County YMCA and worked out for a bit.  I wanted to try to get on the elliptical to see how that felt, and it was tough but good for me and the leg.  After that, I came home and was a slug the rest of the day - watched college football.  The Harrison girls arrived at our house in the evening, and it was nice to see them.  They did help me call Carmen and wish her a happy birthday!

Illinois got beat badly by Ohio State - the Illini are average this season.  Notre Dame won big again, but Purdue is average at best.  Iowa State also is average and got beat soundly, and Iowa had a comeback win at Michigan that was impressive.  I think Iowa has a shot to be better than average.   We'll see next week if Iowa can make a good showing against Ohio State next week.

And on to today.  I need to mow the yard, but to do that I need to clean the deck.  I also need to do some work on the pool, but to do that I need to visit mom and dad and get my hose and cord and pump back.  And I need to get to Burlington and visit the Hoenigs and wish Carmen a Happy Birthday in person.  In all of that I would also like to get some exercise in.  And I would really like the weather to cooperate.

Saturday, Sept. 26

5:35 a.m. - Yesterday was a long day that ended a very, very long week.  I'm grateful to have it be a Saturday today!  And yet the week still isn't done.  

The big event for me yesterday was to pull off a certificate assembly for the students.  Fortunately, it went pretty well.  I got to Dunkin Donuts to pick up the donut holes, and the price was much better than I normally shell out for a treat.  The assembly went well too.  Taylor Saey was there as our special guest, and she was a great addition - bringing her congratulations and enthusiasm.  Then we got everyone with a certificate - even the PreK group.  I did flub the idea of the silly string just a bit.  I should have tried at least one can to see how difficult it might be for little fingers.  But Mrs. Saey helped and Ms. Johnson helped, and everyone laughed as Mr. Bizarri got decorated with silly string.  And then the student council helped distribute the donut holes.  Later there was an IEP meeting to attend, and that was pretty intense for a kindergarten student.  All parents are different, and these parents don't seem to have a lot of confidence in the process, or perhaps they are just overly worried about their children.  In terms of issues, it's much easier to work with helicopter parents than parents that aren't interested enough in their students, so we'll work with it.  The students then got a half day off for the early dismissal, and the teachers participated in an in-service to continue the effort of standard based grading.  Admittedly, I don't understand it well, but I don't need to.  As long as the teachers understand it, I'm good.  I did manage to get a little "paperwork" done, and then I went home and chilled out before going to the Homecoming football game.  The Rockets won!  It was a big win, and I continue to wonder why opposing teams try to do something other than just run at Rockridge teams.  

Today!  I have a 9 a.m. appointment to help with the PTO fun run at the high school track.  And then I'm not sure what the rest of the day will feature.  Like every other day, though, I'm sure something will find me!  I think there are some good college football games to watch, so that is on the agenda.  I'd also like to get some exercise in.

I would really like to be camping this weekend, but the weather isn't cooperating.  There is going to be another busy week this week, but it shouldn't be quite as busy as school as this week was.

4:49 a.m. - Rain?  I don't want rain again!  At least it's a half day, right?  And today is a certificate day, so we'll see how that goes.  I have to go get some donut holes at Dunkin Donuts this morning.  And then it's taking the time to pull off the assembly with the certificates and the drawing for the silly string event to decorate Mr. Bizarri.  Mrs. Saey is going to be there to congratulate the students too.  And then there is teacher's in-service, but I hope to work on some evaluation paperwork.  Then I think we are going to the football game.

Yesterday was another busy one it what have been a very busy week.  There was an admin meeting in the morning that took almost three hours.  The rest of the day I was able to get a few things done.  And then when I got home, it was time to supervise the Homecoming Parade.  It went fine, and then the Harrisons and the Lees and Jack and Rhonda were here to have some supper.  Kenzie made some awesome soup, and Amber had some really good spaghetti. I ate too much, which is okay.  And I had some candy, which I forgot I wasn't eating.  This morning I have a headache, so I'm wondering if it's from the candy or it's from trying to get myself off of the meloxocam.  It's probably a little of both.  

I really wish this was a camping weekend, but the weather doesn't look great.  I'm definitely going to look at text weekend.  Carmen's birthday is tomorrow, so I need to reach out to her.  My baby girl is almost 30.  She's 29...where has the time gone?

Thursday, September 24

4:47 a.m. -  Yesterday was a doozy.  I did start the morning trying to jog a little, and that went okay, so that leg is getting stronger.  At school I had a student council meeting, and then hustled to the district office for a lovely CPI training session.  Then it was hustling back to IC Elementary for the first of two IEP meetings in the afternoon, surrounding a brief post-observation conference with a teacher.  Then we had the Grin Prix show, which is a little skit put on by a couple of actors to help promote good teeth health.  Nope, I wasn't done yet.  Then I had to be a substitute bus driver for Mrs. Hall's route.  I think I can safely say that there aren't many jobs in education that aren't quite as chaotic as being a sub bus driver.  There are many students that really want to help, which sounds good, but isn't.  And then, there help is usually late.  Turn here is generally about five seconds behind where I should really turn or stop.  In the end, I got all the students to their destinations and made it back to the bus barn with a little sanity left.  Was that the end of my day - NOPE!  Then it was grabbing a bite to eat and jumping on the lawn mower.  With tonight's homecoming parade, I had to get to the yard.  I did the riding mower; I did the pushing mowing,; I even rakes some grass out of the front yard.  I think the yard is now ready for guests wanting to view the parade.  Whew!  That was a day!

And today...thankfully not as busy so far.  It's still going to be a long day, though.  I have an admin meeting this morning, and I have to help supervise at the parade this evening.  And in between.....I'm sure something will find me.  If not, I hope to catch up on some observation paperwork.  Just keep swimming.

4:58 a.m. - Yesterday was busy.  I had my first ever play based IEP meeting, and I was totally confused.  That's not really uncommon for me, though, when it comes to performing the role of an early elementary principal. We got through the rest of the day, an dthen it was off to officiate volleyball.  And we got through that too.  

Today looks even busier.  I have lots of places to be and things to do for just one day.  And that's just stuff on the schedule...who knows what unexpected stuff will show up.  Ugh, I just looked at the schedule for today, and I forgot that there is CPI training.  Just keep swimming...it's the last one ever!

Tuesday, Sept. 22

4:38 a.m - Yesterday was a Monday.  But first....

I'm tired of the rain...have I said that recently?  It's still going to be raining today!  Even more than that, I'm tired of political ads.  November can't be here soon enough.  What could be possibly do with the millions of dollars spent on stupid, exaggerated negative political ads.

Now back to yesterday's Monday.  There was a lot to do.  I worked on a script for a teacher's evaluation.  (I have another observation today.)  I knocked some things off of the to-do list.  And .... I...met...with the ROE folks about their new Attendance Support Services efforts.  Actually, Mr. Bush was there too.  Unfortunately, there wasn't anything new that was presented.  I'd really like to say it was a productive meeting, but it was 45 minutes of "same old, same old".  I think, though, I can at least say that I tried.  Mr. Bush and other RR admin can now pick up the ball and do their best.  For me, my confidence still is low when it comes to the ROE supporting any truancy situations.  I'll just do my best.  This is my personal approach.  My public approach will quiet and reserved.  But that meeting and that day wasn't all!  I also had a parent information night at Illinois City Elementary.  I really thought no one was going to show, but there were parents of five students, so we had about an hour to take a tour of the building, talk a little about Mission Control and the new curriculums and take questions that popped up.  It was nice, and I felt good about it.  Of course, I wish more parents would have attended, but at least there was an opportunity offered.

Today...it will be another busy day.  It's hat day...I think I'll go with my boots and cowboy hat today!  I also have a volleyball match tonight at UT.  Just keep swimming....one day closer to retirement.

Monday, Sept. 21

8:42 a.m. - We're back! I woke up Saturday morning to see that I wasn't allowed access to Blogger anymore. I contacted Mr. Lehtola, and apparently he needed to make an adjustment in a setting or something. So now my daily routine is back to normal...below is what I had entered on a doc for the time being. Now it's copied here!

Sept. 19 -- 6:23 a.m. - Yesterday was okay.  It wasn’t simple and easy like I had hoped, but it did get done, and then Amber and I went to Bally’s and had supper and played slots.  The weather continues to feature rain…lots of rain.  I’m not sure what today is going to be like.  We are supposed to go to Aledo to watch youth football and cheerleaders.  I’d like to work on an evaluation I need to complete for school.  Other than that, I’m not sure.  I am enjoying my new book, so maybe I’ll read.

Sept. 20 - 6:10 a.m. - I’m tired of all this rain.  Heavy rain again occurred overnight again, and now there are flood warnings.  I don’t think I’m going to be able to get to the lawn mowing again today.  And once again, I’ll be battling the south part of the yard - likely again sometime in the future with the old motorized sickle.  

Yesterday wasn’t the most productive of days, but it was a nice day.  We went and watched youth football and youth cheerleading in  Aledo.  In between those times, we went to the new Judy’s Cafe in Aledo.  It was okay, but I don’t think it was something that is a must go.  Marketing is half the battle, right?  After getting back home, I drove into Moline and got a haircut, and then when I get back it wasn’t raining, so I got a walk in.  Then I settled into some reading and watching football.  Illinois won, Notre Dame won, and yes Iowa won.  Darren stopped by in the evening, and it was nice to talk with him.  He’s staying today, too, so I’ll head over to mom and dad’s around noon time and watch the Bears and spend time with all of them.  I also would like to get some exercise in again, and I would like to get some schoolwork done and get that evaluation finished.

Monday, Sept. 21 - Yesterday was yet another day of rain, so I didn’t get the yard mowed.I did get a little exercise, and I did get to mom and dad’s and watched the Bears lose.  It was nice just to sit with Darren and mom.  I read a lot of my book and ended up finishing it - Theo of Golden.  It was good, but the first half of the book was better than the second half.  I really like the idea that the author had to deliver the message, but I didn’t think the ending was a good fit.  I was curious how the author was going to end the story, and the ending of the main character was unexpected.  And the resolution was cool.  The story ended up fitting together, and I don’t know that I have a better suggestion…just didn’t seem to “wow” me like the first part of the story.

Today will be busy.  And it’s a Monday.  Ugh.  Today is the big meeting with the ROE.  I’m not looking forward to it, but it has to be done.  I’m going to be told how I’ve been unprofessional and unreasonable in my efforts to work with the ROE.  And I have pushed them.  We’ll see how it goes.  I wish the weather would dry out, so I could mow the yard.

Friday, September 18

4:43 a.m. -  Rain, rain, it's been an entire week of clouds and periods of rain!  And then there was yesterday when the construction crews at the new building struck a gas line.  The students and staff were evacuated and that created a situation where power was cut off to the complex at the junior high/high school.  And that created a situation where the elementary buildings had no internet, which means we had no phones, and we had no video cameras.  So while we elementary folks remained in school and had a "regular day", it was anything but regular.  I sat outside to be a video camera and had a para sit outside on the east end of the building.  We communicated via cell phones at walkie-talkies, and the teachers punted and survived with students and instruction.  And then I had volleyball officiating in the evening, and the gyms were really hot.  It was a long, long day in a long, long week.

Today I'd like a simple day.

4:47 a.m. - Yesterday was really busy like I thought it was going to be, and it was weird too.  There were three different instances of having to introduce myself to unknown people and work with them - a lady that showed up on our playground, a mom with a homeschool student that was meeting with our speech pathologist, and a parent that was picking up his son as a car rider for the first time.  And then there was the lockdown drill, and then there was a formal evaluation observation of a teacher, and then there was getting ready for the upcoming certificate assembly next week.  And then there was getting to school early for the weekly mentoring meetings that no one was interested in.  And then there was the staff meeting after school that was attended by less than half the staff.  And then there was the conversation with Mr. Bush about the difficulty I have apparently caused for the ROE.  I'm sure there was some other stuff that was in there too because I felt like I was running around like crazy all day.

On to today.  I think it's not going to be as busy, but still pretty busy.  And then there is volleyball at Alleman this evening.  Just keep swimming.

4:59 a.m. - Yesterday was fine.  We got through a school day, and we got through volleyball officiating.  I continued to struggle with the ROE and their efforts to assist with truancy.  I think that situation is just going to end up being bad.

4:54 a.m. - Yesterday was busy, and HARD.  There is just something about Mondays...they just seem a little more tiring.  We did get through it, and then we got through the Board of Education meeting in the evening.  Let's keep on keeping on.

So today...it's raining!  This is the first wave of rain that is supposed to occur, and then more waves of rain coming through each day the rest of the week.  The weekend is not looking all that great, so probably no camping.  Today after another busy day at school, I've got volleyball officiating.  We are headed to Geneseo.  It is pay day today, so that's a good thing!

Monday, September 14

 4:44 a.m. - Temps are in the 50's?  Holy cow!  Last week we had an early dismissal day on Tuesday!  We  like the good old Midwest weather!

Yesterday was a good day.  I got in some exercise, and Amber and I took a bike ride to Kristi's house.  I did a little work on the pool and the hot tub, and The RV Guy Bill arrived to work on the camper!  He was expensive, but he was also a good guy.  Event though it was a little pricey, it was worth it - no stress for me.  I left the slide out to make sure the adhesive had a good chance to dry, so I'll put the slide back in sometime this week.  And what about those Bears!  My goodness - 59 points in the season opening win against Carolina - sheesh.  I also visited mom and dad and spent some time with them watching the Packers lose - always good to see the Packers lose.  

Today and all this week is going to be busy.  And tonight, there is an RR BOE meeting.  Back to work it is!
