Monday, August 31

4:43 a.m. - Yesterday was sort of a weird day.  I did get a couple of things done that needed finished.  For one, I got rid of the exercise bicycle downstairs in the basement that wasn't functional.  I did try to spend some time fixing it, but it just wasn't going to happen.  So I took some tools downstairs and took it apart enough to throw it in the garbage.  I also worked a little bit on the pool, and I visited mom and dad.  I didn't get a chance to see mom, as she was at a church event.  I did have a nice conversation with Dad, though.  

And throughout the day, I watched several episodes of Ted Lasso, and I read my book a little.  Plus, I did get in a stretch routine and took a walk, even though Sophie went home in the morning.  I didn't get much down outside, but it rained off and on all day, so there wasn't much I could do outside anyway.

Today is a 1:30 dismissal day.  In fact tomorrow is also an early dismissal, and my guess is that we will have early dismissals all week due to the heat.  It's always best for students to stay in routine and be in attendance all day.  On the other hand, lopping off two and a half hours of the day does make the day shorter.  First, it's a holiday weekend, as it's Labor Day Weekend coming up.  Second, I have my first volleyball match at 4 p.m. at Washington Junior High, so I don't have to worry about leaving school early.  Finally, this is supposed to be my last year as a full-time educator, so I'll take all the shorter days I can get.  Shorter days, volleyball officiating, leading to a three day weekend....bring it on!

Sunday, August 30

5:25 a.m. - Wow, yesterday was a productive one!  I started the day just taking care of a few little things.  I found out that there's no way I can get to the spare tire on the Escape, so I need to figure that out.  I'm probably going to have Trent work on it when I ask him to change the oil and work on the alignment issue on that right back tire.  I just need to get some money to be able to pay for all that.  BUT MAYBE that will occur when I get my money back from the refund I will be getting back from the school district through Northern Illinois Health Plan.  That money is the dectible amount that I had to pay for my knee surgery back in May.  And since I just mailed that report and the information from Blue Cross-Blue Shield, hopefully I will get my refund check within a few months.  When I figured out all that paperwork, I also got the beginning of the month bills written out and put into the mailbox.  Now I just need the Escape to hang in there until I can accumulate enough working cash to get the girl to Trent's.  After all the paperwork work and the garage work (I also put all my softball stuff in the basement for the season!), then I got to work outside.  That work included push mowing the yard, and then using the rider mower, and then I got the old motorized sickle out and wacked the high grass and weeds in the back part of the back yard.  This effort took a lot of physical work out of me.  The sickle does have a self-propelled feature, but it's still a lot of of work to walk behind it and turn it, and I also used it to try to chop down the edges of the ditch.  Unfortunately, there is still standing water out in that back area, and I fear the additional water coming from the school complex is the cause of all that water that is still back there.  And after all the yardwork, the stupid rain sprinkles arrived...rain?  I didn't know it was supposed to rain?  So I came inside and settled in and watch the Bears, who looked pretty good.  Amber was supposed to go out for a dinner dates with some girlfriends, but then that broke down, and she didn't go.  So it was a quiet house and nice sleeping night.

And today?  I don't think I'll be working on the yard, and the hot summer temperatures are forecast to return.  So I think I'll have a pool day.  Something else I did yesterday afternoon was complete my online CPI training stuff.  I'm pretty sure something will find me that I need to do.  I could perhaps get the Stihl out and do some week wacking in the ditches, but I'm not sure I want to do that. 

Amber said that Sophie is going to be going back to her house today, so I'll try to make sure to get her out for a walk.  I may also try to get in a bike ride to exercise the knee.  I probably should also do some strength training.  And I'm likely going to be getting in the pool.  (Perhaps a hot tub soak to start the day is also in order.)  Let's see what the rest of the day brings us.

I do know that the next two days are early dismissal days at school.  Plus, I start volleyball officiating.  And it's MAP testing week!  But hey, this weel will feature the LAST days of August as a full time educator, right?

Saturday, August 29

5:37 a.m. - Yesterday was busy, and I had to deal with an irritation, but I got through it.  Mid-morning I went to the junior high/high school to take some paperwork to the district office.  While I was there I stopped by and bothered some teachers, but I also introduced myself to Juanito De Vera, who recently joined the high school staff from the Phillipines.  I'm going to try to help him adjust and not go crazy.  He's living in an apartment in Edgington in the hardware store building.  I don't think he has a car or license, so I'm just going to try to help him not go stir crazy.  Maybe I'll have him over to the house today sometime.

Most importantly to the day, we had our first assembly of the year at school.  It was a kick-off assembly, since we have MAP testing coming up beginning next week.  We had reps from Girls Scouts and Cub Scouts, and I was able to remind students about the certificates that we distibute, and I offered an additional incentive - I'm going with the "Decorate Mr. Bizarri" opportunity.  One student from each of the grade levels will be drawn to participate, but in order to get in the drawing, students will have to have earned a certificate of accomplishment.  In the Fall, students will get a chance to decorate Mr. Bizarri with silly string.  In the Winter, students will get a chance to decorate him as a sundae.  And in the Spring, a chance to decorate him as a princess.  I was hoping to get a positive response from students, and I did.  Let's see if that additional motivation will help students give more time and energy on their assessments.

After school, Amber and I had a date night and went to the casino.  We had supper at the buffet and then we played slots.  We even jumped into the hot tub before going to bed.

And today I'd like to get some work done, some exercising in, and I'd like to watch the Bears play and relax a bit.  I think Kollyns is coming over sometime, and I think Amber has plans this evening, so I should have the house to myself.

Friday, August 28

4:47 a.m. - And that's a wrap on the junior high softball summer season.  It was a brief season, with only five dates, but it was good for my legs, and the extra little cash helped too.  Also yesterday, I had a check-up appointment with Dr. Hussein.  The knee is doing about as well as could be expected.  He said I was once again a little ahead of schedule with recovery, which was nice to hear.  I got in and out of the appointment fast enough that I was able to stop a Great Clips and get a hair cut.  Then on the way back to school, I stoppped at Dollar General and got some coffee and chocolate for the staff at school.  

Softball being done this week for me worked out well; Kevin Phelps is saying that the heat is returning next week with feels like temps near 100 degrees.  My guess is that we will be having a 1:30 dismissal on Monday and maybe Tuesday too.  

Today is Friday...finally.  And it's a pay day I think.  And it's a kick-off assembly day today, too.  And then after school, I think Amber and I are headed to the casino for a little date night.  I hope today goes smoothly....so far the student issues have been very minimal, and I hope that keeps up.  When I went to my appointment yesterday, I had a more relaxed feeling coming back to school.  Last year, I felt compelled to hurry back from appointments or meetings because I was confident some type of student crisis would be waiting for me.

Thursday, August 27

4:51 a.m. - Yesterday was another good day.  We learned about Mission Control yesterday at school, and that's going to be something to work with and around.  I think it will be a good idea for students, but we'll just have to work through all the implementation intricacies that come along with trying something new.  After school, it was back to Cambridge for a little junior high softball.  I'm going to have to get myself some new umpiring shoes because the ones I have are killing me.  

This morning I have a check-up appointment with Dr. Hussein, and then I'll head to school.  I'm sure I'll get x-rays, and he'll rush in and give me some brief comments and send me on my way.  I have one more softball game today at Mercer County, and then I can put all that stuff away for the winter.  I'm hoping for another quiet, productive day today.

Wednesday, August 26

5:01 a.m. -  Dolly Parton died yesterday.  That's sad news, and her story is all over the news now.  Other than that sad news, yesterday went okay.  Once again, I got a few things done, and I had hoped for a quiet night.  On the other hand, I got dumb luck and had a night off to attend the PTO meeting at Andalusia Elementary.  Not many folks are involved with the organization, but they sure do a lot.  I also got through another "weekly mentor meeting".  Only three staff members appeared for that, but it's okay.  

And now today....another school day but our curriculum director will be in the building to help share guidelines and expectations for what she is calling "mission control", which is basically a scheduled MTSS session for each grade level.  This has been in the works since the end of last school year with a little pilot program idea.  And once this mission control session begins in the schedule, I can start to try to figure out some other things.  And later today it's more softball - again at Cambridge/Ridgewood.  I'm working with someone new, and I'm on the bases.  We'll see how that goes.

Monday, August 24

4:52 a.m. - Yesterday was another productive day, which ended up being a productive weekend around the house.  I worked on the pool to start the day, and then I spent some time on weeds.  I went through three rounds of spraying weeds, which was six gallons of Round-Up.  The weeds in the ditch are going crazy, but that's a long way away from getting addressed as there is still standing water in the backyard from all the rain that we received earlier this month.  After the weeds were accomplished, I even got in the pool with Sophie after she and I went for a walk.  The rest of the day was quiet, simple, and relaxing.  I watched Davenport Northwest win another game in the Little League World Series, and they are looking good.  I'm not sure if they have a third pitcher, but the two pitchers they have used so far have looked very good.  I even did a lot of reading yesterday, and I think I can finish up the book I recently started.

And today....it's Monday, and it's a full week of school again.  I've found that Week 2 is generally the end of the honeymoon period to the school year.  So while Week 1 seemed very calm and wonderful, the personalities and challenges should start to surface this week.  And after school I have a softball game at Ridgewood.  I do get to see Mr. Danner, so that's a good thing!  I think this morning I may try to get out for a walk with Sophie...temps are in the 50's!

Sunday, August 23

5:34 a.m. - I got a lot done yesterday.  I did start with getting some time in the hot tub, which felt great, and then I finished my book - Demon Copperhead.  It was a book that was tough for me to read, and I suppose I felt better that there was a happy ending, but I know all too well that there aren't all happy endings with addictions.  I then worked on washing the house.  I had a bit of delay when my extendable brush broke, so I went to Edgington Hardware to replace it.  While I was out and about, I just took my rake and the loppers to the school to get that work done.  I trimmed the trees over the outside tables, and I worked on getting more mulch around the playground where it is needed.  That was a lot of work with the old rake, so my body is feeling it today.  Then it was back home and finished the house washing project, which eventually got done.  After that, I worked on the yard - mowed the yard with the rider and with the trim mower.  With all that done, we grilled some steaks for supper and waited for Kollyns to arrive.  Oh - I did also spends a little time in the morning on a walk with Sophie.  

Today...I'd really like to work on weeds - pulling weeds, spraying weeds, clipping weeds.  The problem is that I'm really tired.  We'll see how today goes.

Saturday, August 22

5:14 a.m. - Yesterday was a long Friday, but it worked out.  Early in the school year, work is about accomplishing things of the to-do list.  Plus, it's about getting around and trying to become familiar with the students and try to establish a positive start.  I have learned all the students' names that are new to me in PreK and Kindergarten, so I'll try to reinforce that next week.  Mr. Bush has said he wants more educational conversations, but then more and more management things are placed upon us.  And to be honest, I'm really not the educational expert for the elementary level any way.  I'll do my best.

After school, we went to Orion to watch Kollyns.  Jack and Rhonda were there, so Amber decided to get a pizza at Harkey's and go over there and have supper with Jack and Rhonda.  They stayed for a bit and then it was just Amber, me, and Kollyns.  I ended up trying to listen to the Rockridge game (they wone a close one) but I fell to sleep.  There ended up being a weather delay, so I was able to listen to a lot of it despite falling to sleep.  One thing I did get to do yesterday was to deposit a couple of umpiring checks.  That was nice.

Today I hope to get some work done at the house.  From Karrigan and Michael's house came Sophie.  Apparently according to Amber, Sophie is staying with us "for awhile".  I'm not exactly sure what that means.  Unfortunately the Lees are down to just one dog now, as Amber got a message that one of their dogs had died after we had left.  Amber had said he hadn't looked very good, and he had been diagnosed with problems recently.  It wasn't a big surprise, but it is still a heart punch to lose a pet.

5:14 a.m. - Yesterday was rough.  We got through the school day after an lengthy admin meeting that added a few things to my to-do list.  And then I had a softball game.  I was behind the plate, and the legs struggled, which means I struggled.  I definitely feel the effects today...I'm sleepy, and my legs and hips are sore.  

So today might be a bit tougher for a Friday after a long week.  And then apparently I'm going to be in Orion with Amber and Kollyns tonight.  I'll take my book.  At some point this weekend, I'd like to mow the yard, rake the yard, and spray weed lines.

Thursday, August 20

4:51 a.m. - Yesterday went okay.  There was a first incident of a student escorted to my office, and there was a first incident of a staff member complaining about another staff member.  Now the school year has started!  Plus, I completed my first mentoring meeting.  And after getting home, I got the tractor put back together!  It took a little more time and effort than I had hoped, but it got done eventually.  And I even had a little time to mow the yard, which needed it badly even though I had only mowed it a few days ago. 

So now today I have an admin meeting, which usually adds things to my list of things I need to get done. And sometimes there is frustration.  And after school, I have another softball game, and I'm behind the plate, which will test the leg again.  It feels better, so we will see how that goes.  I know I'm going to be a little better prepared...take something to eat and drink, and take some Tylenol.

5:05 a.m. - The school day was okay yesterday, but my first umpiring softball gig was rough.   My leg wasn't ready for that level of that type of activity.  My left ankle is really sore.  I'm glad I don't have anything tonight, so I can have a day's rest to see how it feels.  

Today....let's get through another day of trying to accomplish items on the to-do list.  Let's get the tractor put back together after I get home.  Let's get some rest.

Tuesday, August 18

4:45 a.m. - Yesterday was the first full regular day of school, and it did indeed feel like a long, long day.  But we got through it!  The weather was nice, so the students were able to go outside, which was a good thing.  I'm not sure if that is going to continue today, but you can't fight Mother Nature.  

Lynn Heath was a sub for Mrs. Zampogna, and she did great.  I believe Kim will be back today, and while our subs did great, having Kim back will be awesome.  She does so much for our building.  The new staff went through their first day, and those folks are still learning.  I did get into the kindergarten classrooms and the PreK classrooms and tried to start learning names with faces.  I hope to accomplish that by the end of the week.

After school, I set out to put the lawn tractor back together, but I ended up breaking a part, so now I have to wait for that part to get here to replace that.  Then I'll see if my most recent efforts paid off or if there is something else yet to do.  

And today....keep helping the staff...keep helping the students.  I have a lot of things on my "to-do list", but I also have my first softball game after school.  I haven't worked any softball since March of '25, so let's see how that goes.
