Saturday, May 30

6:11 a.m. - Yesterday featured a few little highlights.  I got through physical therapy and then headed back out to IC Elementary and accomplished a few things.  Then when I got home, I was able to get the mower back together and placed in the shed.  Then Amber and I went to the casino for supper and gaming - no we didn't win.  I did learn yesterday that we are going to have Carmen, Tyler, and Caleb visiting us at the end of next week, so that's something to look toward.

Today I hope to get yard work done.  I'm not sure how much will get done, and I'm going to have to keep my leg from swelling too much.   I hear we are headed to Aledo to watch Luke play baseball, and we'll be stopping by Huffman's to pick up the weed wacker.  We'll just see how much work we get done today and then try to work again tomorrow.

Friday, May 29

3:50 a.m. - Such is my life.  By about this time in the middle of the night, my Tylenol wears off, and I have to use the restroom to pee, so then I can't go back to sleep because I've woken up and now my leg is giving me discomfort.  So I get up and try to sleep in the chair or on the couch.  This morning I just decided to get up and have some breakfast pizza - a.k.a. the last of the Happy Joe's pizza from Tuesday - and take a Tylenol and see if I can get sleepy again before the sun comes up.  Maybe the Tylenol will relax the leg and the pizza will make me sleepy - in the meantime, I might as well just do some thinking and typing.

Yesterday was a productive first day without students and staff.  The transformation of the workroom went okay, and the tile work project on the new kindergarten room has begun.  I also had an interview of a candidate for the health aide position, and that was encouraging.  I'm going to check with references on that candidate today.

It was a long day, and then there were four grandchildren at home when I arrived, so I didn't get to work on the mower.  I did, however, get selected to grill up some hamburgers and hot dogs for supper.  After that, it was a little television and then on to bed.

I hope today's physical therapy session continues to show improvement.  Then it's off to ICE to complete some work there.  And then it's the weekend - a weekend that is likely going to be consumed by yard projects and periods of exercises for the knee and ice and elevation for the knee.  It would be nice to be camping, but the old knee isn't ready for that yet.

Thursday, May 28

5:53 a.m. - Yesterday was busy.  I started at the retirement breakfast and then proceeded to physical therapy and then proceeded back to ICE.  I had a conference with a teacher, and I spent some time with our custodial staff establishing a plan for cleaning/moving the building.  I also made phone calls that needed to be made, including calls trying to set up interviews for openings in the building.  Then it was off to Mississippi Brewing to have a beverage with some staff members that were meeting there as an end-of-year get together.  Then it was back to ICE to do some work until I realized that Tucker's game wasn't going to start at 5 p.m., so I went home only to go back to ICE for a 6 p.m. game.  You would think all of that would have meant a good night's sleep - nope.  I actually have been up since about 12:30 - getting a little sleep here and there before being uncomfortable and waking up and trying to get comfortable.

Today is the first day without students nor staff in the building, but the building will still be busy, as will my day trying to continue to get things done.  I have one interview to complete, and I'd like to get home and get the tractor put back together.  I'm sure there will be something else to complete as well, but we'll get through it.

Wednesday, May 27

6:17 a.m. - Yesterday was field day - the last day of school with students.  Mr. Viren and Mr. Goben did a great job in organizing the day - the students were busy.  And the weather cooperated.  It was still a very long day, even at a 1:30 dismissal, but it was still a good day.  The knee really hurt all day, as I was on my feet too much, and therapy wasn't much fun.  The bottom line - no more students for a few months, and summer is here.

Today is the last day with all teachers - it's not going to be fun.  But we'll get through it.  The retirement breakfast is this morning, then I have PT, then I'll go to the building.

Tuesday, May 26

4:45 a.m. - I hurt myself yesterday.  I knew this knee recovery was going too well.  I noticed the mower deck belt was bad, so I went to remove the deck to inspect the belt, and everything was going fine until I went to get up, and something "clunked", and sharp pain was the result.  So then I laid down to gather myself, and something "clunked" again - with more pain.  I don't know what was clunking, and I hope I didn't break something, but I do know that the rest of the day was horrible throbbing pain in the knee.  I'm really tired of not being normal, and now I really could have set myself back.

And it couldn't have happened at a worse time.  I have to get to school early today for prep for field day, and then I have PT this afternoon.  Today is going to suck.

Yesterday, I did get to mom and dad's to visit them for a bit in the morning, and I did get some of the yard mowed.  And in the evening, I found out from Carmen that she's pregnant.  It's still early - she thinks she's about four weeks.  I hope this pregnancy isn't too hard on her like last time with Caleb.

Monday, May 25 - Remembering Memorial Day

7:01 a.m. -  Yesterday was a good day of rest and recovery.  There was a birthday party extravaganza for Tucker and Knox around noon, so there was chaos from about 10:30 to 2:00, but that was fine.  The kids had fun, and everyone had tacos and cake.  And from that point, I just got in my exercises and my strength training and did some elevation and had some ice therapy sessions.

Of course, I still am not healed well enough to sleep well all through the night, but the leg continues to feel a little better each day.  I'm just at the point where I'm frustrated and tried of not being normal.

Today, Amber is going to go for a bike ride.  I'm going to try to get the yard mowed and visit my mom and dad.  Those are my two main goals - along with more exercises and elevating and ice.

6:34 a.m. - Yesterday was pretty quiet day.  We went to a couple of baseball games - one in Aledo for Luke; one in Andalusia for Tucker.  I did get some strength training in, and I did get two sets of leg rehab exercises in.  I also watched some television and relaxed and iced and elevated the left knee.

I think today we have a birthday party here.  I also need to get the yard mowed, but that can happen today or tomorrow.

Today is Chase's birthday.  He's 33 today, but I won't see him nor hear from him.  I miss him, but it's possible I will never hear from him or see him ever again.

Saturday, May 23

4:51 a.m. - Today is Saturday; thank goodness.  Yesterday was the last day of "regular days" of school for ICE.  For some reason, someone thought having a "Yes Day" would be "fun".  I know there are a lot of quotation marks there, but as I anticipated, yesterday wasn't "fun" for me.  I did get through PT, which hurt a lot again.  (I need to do a lot of work to get my range of motion back in the knee.)  And I went to ICE earlier than I needed to because it was "yes day".  And when I arrived, the building was chaos.  So I tried to do my due diligence - staying out of the way but also attempting to help supervise.  Just after noon, I needed to meet with a parent who wanted to vent/share about the frustrations/experiences she felt she had from a teacher.  And like a lot of similar meetings, I wasn't going to be in a position to make anyone truly happy.  The parent wasn't going to feel like I was supporting her enough; the teacher wasn't going to feel like I was supporting her enough.  It's just the way it goes.  And I've been the parent in those situations, and I've been the coach in those situations, and I've been the teacher in those situations, and I've been the principal in those situations.  I finished reading my Lincoln book again (for the second time), and those situations are pretty similar to what Lincoln experienced during his presidency while he attempted to navigate being a president during the Civil War.  No matter what decision he made, he couldn't make some folks happy enough.  He went through four years of watching thousands of people die; he went through four years of trying to deal with slavery; he went through four years of trying to preserve the Union.  Sometimes I think how sad it was for him to be assassinated, but I think I want to read a biography about Andrew Johnson, the next president who tried to navigate a lot of folks through reconstruction.  I don't know much about him, and I think now that his story is pretty challenging too.  I might even reach out and go to a bookstore today to try to find something on him.

Anyway, I got through the parent meeting, and then Mrs. Emery and Mr. Bush arrived to award the teachers and honor the teachers for the successes of the year.  Each teacher received stickers acknowledging the successes of their students for MAP testing in reading and math and m-Class testing (reading out loud).  It's a wonderful idea, but there will be some hurt feelings for teachers that didn't receive as many stickers as others.  The thing is, some seasons when I was coaching, there weren't as many wins; there weren't as many accolades; there weren't as many trophies.  And that's just the way it goes.  And sometimes your greatest achievements come with the groups of students or players that you went 5-20 with.  And sometimes the easiest years don't require much effort at all - it's just the way it is.  We get the cards we are dealt, and we do the best we can - there is honor and goodness and achievement in that.

So...my guess is that next week - Tuesday and Wednesday while staff are still in the building - I'll be working through some hurt feelings about getting less stickers than other teachers, and it's not fair because those teachers had better students.  And that's going to be partially true.  It's fair (and reasonable) to award success - unfortunately there just aren't awards for surviving and thriving through difficult years/seasons.

Then it was on to dealing with "the Breakfast Club".  At the end of the day at 3:20, a group of our difficult second grade students were sent to me because they weren't allowed to participate in something fun.  I have a bit of a problem with this, but I get it, and I did it.  Sitting in the gym with that group of students wasn't enjoyable - and I'll probably get emails or phone calls about that, even though I had nothing to do with the plan.  (I did get to have a conversation with Marcus Bush just before the Breakfast Club again, so that was at least healthy.)

And I ended my day taking deposits to CBI Bank and the District Office before going home.  Later in the evening, Mr. Bush asked if I wanted to join him and Shawn for some beverages, and I declined.  First, I shouldn't have beverages with the medications I'm finishing up for my leg.  Second, I really didn't need to leave after Amber had just arrived - she's had a long school year too.  Third, while the idea of getting shitfaced or even buzzed and forgetting life for awhile had its appeals, I really didn't want to feel icky this morning, as I need to get some yard work done or get to a ball game, and I definitely need to get in exercises and strength training and may even try to get in a walk if I can.

Let's spend a moment talking about our wonderful King - Donald J. Trump.  Mr. President has made a "deal" with the Department of Justice - that he oversees - to drop a lawsuit for the leak of his tax returns in 2019 to establish a 1.776 BILLION dollar fund that would compensate folks who were (in his words) inappropriately prosecuted during the Biden administration.  The panel that would decide who would receive this money would consist of the acting Attorney General - who formally was Mr. Trump's personal attorney - as well as four other members of Mr. Trump's choosing.  The translation is that he's going to attempt to dish out thousands and thousands of dollars to his stormtroopers who attempted to do his bidding - including but not limited to the January 6 rioters who he's already pardoned and now is going to give money too.  He's basically continuing to strengthen and fortify his personal army to have for him when he needs to have them - perhaps during an upcoming possible third impeachment attempt; perhaps during the end of his second term when he decides he wants a third term.  THIS MOTHER FUCKER wants to pay people like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers who marched on the capital and beat on police and stormed the building and trashed it.  That's the mother fucking world we are in right now.  Talk about the beginning of a Civil War!  He's an embarrassment and threat to our country and the world and there are still millions of people who think he's the right choice - even family and friends of mine - and I JUST DON'T GET IT.  I can get a better understanding, though, of how people took up arms and were willing to die for a cause they felt strongly about - I can understand that better having lived through this maniac.

Friday, May 22

6:45 a.m. -  Yesterday was rough.  I sat through an admin meeting that took up most of the morning.  I was at home, so I watched and listened through my Chromebook.  There really wasn't much that applied to me, but I listened anyway.  Then I went to school and tried to get things done and listened to even more concerns about how I'm a not very good principal.

Today is the last day of school with students.  That's good news.  Not sure what is going to happen this weekend.

Thursday, May 21

5:54 - Yesterday was a long day.  I had a consult with the physician assistant, where things are doing well, and I got the bandage off.  Then I headed over to physical therapy, and that was rough.  Emily worked real hard at getting my leg/knee straighter, and I'm feeling the effects this morning.  Then it was over to Aledo to drop off the weed Wacker, and I stopped in to see Mr. Holtschlag to say hello.  I made it to school by noon, which was the plan, and then it was an afternoon of business.  I had an IEP meeting, and then other stuff, and then there was a staff meeting after school.  And then after getting home, it wasn't long before we were off and going again to Tucker's game in Taylor Ridge.  I wish I would have slept well last night, but that didn't happen.

Today I have an admin meeting this morning, and I'm hoping I can just attend by zoom, so I don't have to sit in a chair for that long.  I'm thinking of making it back to school by noon again.  I'm hoping this evening is more restful.

Wednesday, May 20

5:56 a.m. - Yesterday was okay.  I tried to do a little strength training in the morning in the basement and also completed my therapy exercises.  At school, I was able to get some things done.  After school, Kollyns was here along with Jack, Rhonda, and Aaron, who helped Amber move some furniture around.  Then someone arrived to pick up a dresser that Amber had put on marketplace.  And then I watched the Cubs lose.

Today I have a consult with Brandon at ORA, and hopefully I'll get my bandage off of my knee.  Then a little later I have a PT appointment.  Then it's off to school to see what I can get accomplished there.  Just keep swimming.

Tuesday, May 19

5:18 a.m. - Yesterday was long.  I survived a PT appointment, and then it was off to IC Elementary to get a certificate assembly completed.  On the way I picked up some ice cream at Shivers, and prior to the PT appointment, I picked up some table settings stuff.   There were some guests, which was great.  Mrs. Emery had some words for students, and then Levi Buckrop and his colleague Matthew were there from the Conservation Police to also address the students for a few moments.  Then Mrs. Sywassink recognized the recent Rockin Rockets, and then the certificates were handed out to students.  We finished up the event with the ice cream, which ended up a little messier than I anticipated.  I ended up staying the rest of the afternoon, which was hard on the repaired leg.  After getting home, I made a frozen pizza and watched television - Candiens beat the Sabres in a game 7.

Today should be a quiet day, which means it won't.  It's okay...we'll get through it.

Monday, May 18

6:52 a.m. - Oh it's a rough start to a Monday.  Storms are rolling in, had a para call in sick, and today is certificate assembly day, and I have a trip to the PT today at noon.  Just keep swimming.

Yesterday was productive.  I was able to get the yard mowed, but it was a job.  I'm just not very fast on the surgically repaired leg just yet, so push mowing is work!

Sunday, May 17

6:34 a.m. - Yesterday I accomplished the tasks that were on the agenda.  I got to school in the morning and completed signing all the certificates I needed to get signed and sent out an email to staff.  Then in the evening, I attended the banquet of the Quad City Officials Association.  That wasn't very well attended, but I did get my dues paid and the meal was nice.

I think I may have to start back into taking more of the medications I had previously been taking.  I think the physically therapy exercises I'm now working on are adding to the pain.  I'll think that over.  I'm still not able to sleep through the night.

Today.  I honestly don't know.  I'd really like to have the yard get mowed, but that seems like a daunting task right now and the weather doesn't appear to be cooperating.

Saturday, May 16

5:26 a.m. - I'm sure ready to have the pain in my knee back away.  I'm growing really weary and frustrated with an inability to comfortably sleep throughout the night.  I toss and turn and try a million different ways to place my leg and use pillows in various ways to just get a little comfort, but nothing works for very long.

Yesterday was eventful and busy and frustrating and fun all rolled up into one.  I got through the first PT appointment, but range of motion work is painful.  I now have four exercises I need to do three times a day, and today I will start that effort.  Then it was off to school to manage that mess the best I could.  I got a few things done, but I need to go back to the office today to get some paperwork done.

After school, Amber and I went to a retirement party for Chris Gosney.  It was nice seeing some of those folks and just getting out a bit.  Unfortunately our evening was cut short because we needed to pick up Kollyns to spend the night.  After returning home, I watched the Cubs game and played with Kollyns - Cubs beat the White Sox 10-5.

Today...the weather may impact efforts.  I do need to get to the office for a bit.  I also need to get the yard mowed somehow, but that is going to hurt.  Tonight I'm heading to an officiating banquet in Rock Island, which will be fun.

There are only six days of school left with students, and it can't come soon enough.  Of course, on a Friday afternoon, I had to have a teacher stop in and complain about how she's not supported enough, and I need to get tougher with other staff members who are rude to her.  If I could just get her to stop angering those other people, they probably wouldn't be rude to her near as often.

Friday, May 15

6:06 a.m. - Yesterday was busy ... I had IEP meetings all morning long, and then I had to work on a variety of items after arriving to ICE, including assisting with the graduation walk of the RHS grads that attended Illinois City Elementary.  I got home around 2 p.m., and rested a bit and finished my book, and then Amber and I went to Luke's pre-school graduation ceremony.  That was a long day; my surgery leg was really swollen.

Today's first PT appointment is going to be painful.  I would really like my time at ICE to be quiet.  And then I'd really like to have a restful weekend.  Today is pay day....maybe that's a good thing to focus on.

Thursday, May 14

5:43 a.m. - Yesterday was a long day.  I had my first post-op consult with ORA - Brandon this time instead of Dr. Hussein.  Apparently everything is looking okay.  I'll take their word for it.  I am backing off some more of the medications, so that's good.  Mom took me to my appointment, so it was nice spending some time with her.  I had a little time before going to ICE, so I went in the house and visited with them for a bit - I think I got to ICE about 10:30 a.m.  Yesterday we pushed out the next new opening at ICE - we are going to have a second section of kindergarten.  It's going to be a full, full building next school year.  So now we need to hire a nurse, a kindergarten teacher, and a pre-k teacher, and that's after we have already secured a new interventionist and a new special education teacher.  It's going to be a busy May and June.  My last year of working in education is not going to be simple.

After school I just came home and then was soon among the Harrisons and then the Southwells.  Amber and all those folks eventually headed different directions, and I read my book and turned into bed early.    I did have another episode of sleeplessness again, so I dealt with that.  I wish I could just sleep comfortably all the way through the night.

Today is going to be a mess.  I have to sit in IEP meetings all morning long, so I'm going to get ready for school early but then stay home.  There is no sense going to ICE and sitting in chairs at these meetings...that will be very uncomfortable.  I will head that direction after the meetings are all done.

Wednesday, May 13

5:53 a.m. - Yesterday was a productive day.  I was able to get some things done at school, and I was able to get some things done at home.  Last night was okay, too, as I also tried to get some work done then.  I needed to review data from our recent MAP and m-Class assessments and figure out who earned certificates of accomplishment.

Today I have a consult with my surgery doctor, even though I think I'm meeting with Brandon who is the physician assistant for Dr. Hussein right now.  My mom is going to take me to the appointment, but I think after today I'll be driving myself to all the physical therapy appointments.  I then need to continue to make accomplishments at school.
