5:56 a.m. - It's raining! Bella decided she didn't want to go outside this morning due to the rain, and it's okay to rain because yesterday I got the yard mowed! It was another busy and productive day, as I started at the office and got some things done in the building before taking Amber's bicycle to LeClaire for repair. And then it was time to work on the yard. It still needs work with weeds and trimming of the bushes and washing the front of the house. I'll get to that, though.

And today we are headed west to Adventureland in Des Moines with the Harrisons. So I don't know what today will be like with the rain - hopefully it's past Des Moines by the time we get there.

6:06 a.m. - Yesterday was busy. Admin meeting in the morning, and then on to the IC office to receive a shipment of activity books. And then it was off to the ROE to take in a presentation on a revised approach toward chronically truant students. The presentation was really frustrating. My perspective is the that the ROE has recognized that it's current model is ineffective, so it's downsizing the department to reallocate funds elsewhere and developing a MTSS model for attendance for schools to implement. Basically, I'm really frustrated and not sure what to do. It is clear that it will likely be more challenging to get help from the ROE.

Today, I don't really have anything scheduled, but I need to get the yard mowed, and I'd like to get to LeClaire to get Amber's bike fixed. Plus, I need to get a little work done at the office.

5:28 a.m. - Yesterday was productive. I spent most of the day at the office after visiting with mom and dad in the morning. I took mom some little gifts for watching Bella for us while on vacation, and then she had some hay she needed down as well as some help with getting a broken post out of the ground where she had some new fencing installed.

The office work was getting things accomplished from the "to-do list" and adding more things onto the list that now need done. Then in the afternoon I had a bus refresher course. Mr. Strachan picked me up, and then we headed out for the course - two hours of "refreshing". And then we went and had a sandwich at Tap 22.

Today is going to be busy. The first thing I need to do is get the camper back to the house. Then there is an admin meeting at 9. Then I have curriculum materials arriving sometime between 11-1. Then I have a meeting at the ROE at 3 p.m. Maybe this evening I can work on mowing the yard.

5:49 a.m. - And like that ... vacation '26 is in the books. Yesterday we made the drive home, which I appreciated much more than the drive there. I'm not exactly sure how much slower it was, but it was a much simpler drive for the driver. As planned, I just took the camper to Loud Thunder and dropped her off, which was a good idea. The temps were so hot that I'm sure the the village blacktop road in front of our house would have been very soft. I'm watching the weather to see about tomorrow, which is looking very workable to bring the camper back. I just need to be able to get to an admin meeting at 9 a.m., which I think can be done.

The yard needs some work, which is to be expected. I also need to write out some bills for the beginning of the month schedule. First on the agenda today, though, is to get to the office and see what I can get accomplished - likely adding a lot of stuff to my to-do list. And then later today I have a bus driving refresher course, and that experience isn't fun. It's like going to an officiating clinic. There may be one or two things that are helpful, but they likely are things that could have been sent in an email. And bless the folks who lead the course, as they are passionate and dedicated. Unfortunately, I just want to get done.

But...I'm HOME...which as much as I enjoyed our vacation, it's good, too, to be home.

5:58 a.m. - We are homeward bound today! And it's time. Amber needs to be home; she's tired and not feeling well and needs to see her kids and grandkids.

Yesterday, it was a long travel day. And it wasn't an easy drive. There was a lot of hills action followed by a lot of busy interstate action before arriving in Eureka, Missouri, which is where Six Flags is at. The KOA we are staying at is nice, but it's older. Older sometimes means trees, and this stop does have trees, which is welcomed because it's really, really hot again. So yesterday, we jumped into the pool, had some supper in the camper, and then we ventured out to get some fuel for the truck and some ice cream. And more good news is that we can get a meTV station out of St. Louis!

So today, we are going to pack up and get ready to head home. The route takes me on a highway north out of Eureka, but I'm not going that way because I'm tired of the hills. So I'm going to take advantage of an expressway bypass around the west side of St. Louis and go that way. And yet, I'm not taking the camper home today. With the really hot temps and sun, our road in front of our house will be very soft, and getting the camper and truck on that road and trying to back up the camper will likely result in me tearing up the road and getting asphalt in the tires of the truck and camper. So I've booked a couple of days in Loud Thunder to basically store the camper while the temps cool down.

1:38 a.m. - I woke up and then had to use the bathroom, so I'll be up for a bit before I get sleepy again and head back to bed. I figured I might as well get an entry in before I read some more of my book. Then I'll go back to sleep.

We are in a KOA in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, and this was a bit of a "surprise find". I honestly expected an older, rural KOA next to a lake, but it's a new, modern KOA next to a lake resort. And what's cool is that it shares a lot of the amenities that are just across the road on the resort like indoor pool and hot tub, outdoor pool and beach access to the lake, and for a few, there is an "aqua park" with a bunch of those inflatable jumping things. Also in the resort area is a restaurant called Dick's Place, which is where Amber and I ate last night - I had some mozzarella sticks where were hand-breaded and wonderful, and I had a calzone which was good too. And yes, I decided to get the bikes down off the rack and do some exploring, and I was able to motivate Amber to join me in visiting the beach on the lake. And of course I ended up talking with some locals, because that's the sort of thing I do.

All of that afternoon/evening stuff occurred after a LONG, CHALLENGING day of driving. I was really hoping that north central Arkansas was going to be "less hilly and curvy" - it wasn't. There weren't the big uphill and downhill areas but there really wasn't ever and opportunity to put the truck in cruise control and just go. And then when we arrived at this KOA, the hook-up procedure wasn't very user friendly. The sites are tight and all rock, and you have to sort of walk on big rocks around the camper to get around. Whoever designed this campground really didn't know what camping folk need and appreciate. On. the other hand, we made it, and there were things to do. There was also a band that started playing around 8 p.m., but it was so dang hot, that we skipped that idea. The reason why we came this way was to visit Strawberry, Arkansas, as that is the town that Amber's grandparents on her dad's side came from. And we discovered that there isn't much to Strawberry - population 268. But we went there, and we got Amber in a picture with the town sign.

And now on to today. We don't have to be in a big hurry, as we have a lovely 5+ hour drive today to get back to Missouri for our final stopover near St. Louis before making the final stretch tomorrow up the Iowa side. Today's drive isn't going to be much fun either. And now I have a new worry. Apparently there is extreme heat at home, so trying to get the trailer home in the afternoon heat is not going to be a good idea. I'm likely going to be better off putting the girl at Loud Thunder for a few days until the heat comes down...I'll talk to Amber about that.

5:03 a.m. - Yesterday was a good last full day in Branson before we pull out today and head southwest into Arkansas. In the morning, we drove to downtown Branson to do some souvenir shopping, and we discovered that there is a "historic downtown" and there is a modern sort of "riverwalk downtown". We started with breakfast at the Farmhouse Diner, and I ordered some grits to try with my breakfast. I have a feeling I needed to add something to them, but it was something to try. After breakfast we searched through the older part of downtown at various shops, as Amber likes to try to find little gifts for the grandchildren to take back with her. Then on our way back to the truck, we walked along the riverfront which we really didn't even know was there. Then we stopped at Walmart for a few things and filled up with diesel on our way back to the campground. In the afternoon we traveled back on what we call "the strip" to view a show of entertainer impersonators at the Legends Theater. There wasn't a very good crowd, and I don't think Amber had a good time, but I enjoyed watching the production. The impersonated entertainers were Toby Keith, Lainey Wilson, Elvis, and the Blues Brothers. Of course, my favorites were Elvis and the Blues Brothers, and I even got a picture with Jake and Elwood with my phone. Amber and I got a theater picture with Toby Keith as we entered too. The actors and actresses worked hard, but the band that supported the impersonators really weren't "into it" it seemed. They seemed to be just going through the motions, and I think that takes away from the overall experience. Maybe, though, they are like that so attention is focused on the main attraction. Elvis was last, and he encouraged the couples to dance to the last song, which Amber reluctantly did. There's one for the bucket list...dance with your wife in Branson to an Elvis impersonator! After the show we had supper at a Chinese restaurant, and then we headed back to the camper.

So today this morning, we pull out. I don't have a lot to do with the camper. The bikes have to be loaded up, and then all the usual stuff with unhooking - cleaning and removing the sewer lines and water line. Then we get the slides in, and then I get the truck and camper hooked up together and double check everything else.

It won't be an easy drive, and I'm really hoping that north central and north east Arkansas are less hilly and "scenic" than Branson and the Missouri Ozarks have been. It should be about three to three and a half hours to the next stop in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, but then we are driving to Strawberry, Arkansas, so there is going to be A LOT of driving today, just some of it won't be with the camper.

5:11 a.m. - Yesterday featured a trip to Silver Dollar City Amusement Park. It started in 1960, so it's been around a while. We did have our first big "misadventure" of the trip, which was attempting to take a tour of the Marvel Cavern that's on the site. After looking up a little info online, the cave is what basically started the theme park. We did get a start in the cave, but at the first stop the guide met, Amber struggled and had a panic attack, so we went back up the stairs and got out. We then went for some breakfast, so she could take a break and get her heart rate back down.

The rest of the day went fine. We walked around and rode a few little rides - avoiding any roller coasters. We did ride two of their water rides and ended up getting really wet. Then we made our way home. Fortunately, I was able to get the truck out. I was a little worried because I didn't think my parking spot through very well - I need to remember to do a better job of that. With the extended cab Ford, if you don't give yourself a good way out, other cars can box you in. Then after we got home, I had another "misadventure" when I bully got rumbly and I had a couple of bad episodes of diarrhea. I was scared I had acquired that nasty stomach parasite that has been going around recently, but I think this morning it must have been something I had for breakfast, or maybe there was just too much sweet stuff I had in my coffee that I got for myself up at the coffee house in the campground. This morning, though, I don't seem to be having any more "episodes".

This will be our last full day in Branson, as tomorrow is pull out day for Arkansas. This morning when we get around, we are headed to downtown, so Amber can do some gift shopping. I'm going to need to get some fuel, but other than that I'm just along for the ride. This afternoon at 3 p.m., we are going to a show - this one is at the Legends Theater, and there will be four impersonators - including an Elvis impersonator and a Blues Brothers performance. The weather isn't supposed to be as pretty as in past days, so it won't be a bad day to be indoors.

6:13 a.m. - Yesterday was busy! We rode bikes most of the day, and Amber ended up calling the day Bike and Boats Day! To start, we drove to Dogwood Canyon Nature Preserve, which was built by the same guy who built Top of the Rock. So it's a "nature preserve", but it's a commercialized nature preserve, not a state park or county park or anything like that. So it's for tourists, but that's okay. It was a longer bike ride than I thought it would be, and there were several things to see like fish and waterfalls and bridges. It really was fun, and it would have been a long, long walk, so the bike ride was the preferred method. Where we had to turn around there were some kind of fish I didn't recognize...like big goldfish, but they weren't goldfish...any way, there was fish food to buy for a quarter, so I got down close on the rocks and fed the fish.

After Dogwood Canyon, we found a trail that leads from the Table Rock Lake Dam to a local marina. This was created by the Corps of Engineers, and it was about 2.5 miles one way. So this was a shorter trail that was also down-and-back, but it was mostly in the Table Rock State Park. There were folks that were in the water cooling off, but we stayed on our bikes. We looked for Moonshine Beach, but we weren't going to stay, so I turned the truck around and headed home.

Later in the afternoon, we went to the Showboat, which was a dinner cruise on the lake with a show on stage. Walking around the boat was fun...reminded me of my time as a security guard on the Jumer's gambling boat back in the day docked in Rock Island. Of course, I went up and talked with the captains, and ventured around. The show on the stage was nice, and the meal was good.

I think we got back to the campground around 6 p.m., and then Amber pulled up a movie on Netflix that was good.

And today? We are headed to Silver Dollar City, which is an amusement park. It's not a long drive, which is nice. And the weather is supposed to be good again, so it's a good day to head towards that attraction.

6:06 a.m. - Day 4 of vacation? Day 5? Anyway, yesterday was a nice day. In the morning, we got out early around 7:30 a.m. and drove out to Top of the Rock. The owner of Bass Pro Shops was the idea guy behind building this "area". It's all a bit weird and strange because it seems as though he is portrayed as this environmentalist and keeper of the outdoors, yet this place isn't really preservation of the outdoors. On this park is a golf path paved trail that visitors rent to go around the park. In the middle of the path within a cave is a little drive-thru mini bar. I have to admit that it was fun to drive the golf cart through the trees and hills and caves and have a drink. And the park is pretty, but it has all been groomed and landscaped. Then after the cart ride we were shuttled to the museum (and of course there is a gift shop). And around the museum there is a putting green as well as a nine-hole 3 par golf course. Also, there is a chapel that apparently was built just for the owner's daughter's wedding. In the museum, there was what amounts to four football fields of historical artifacts including Native Americans and "white". It's mostly Native American, and the museum is organized into various collections by folks - presumably white people. I was hoping it would be just a museum of local history and tell the story of the Ozarks, but it was much more than that. There was a "collection" on Lincoln and civil war weapons. There was a "collection" on Lee. There was even a "collection" on famous movie cowboys. So what I thought was going to be a history tour was actually a tour of various people's collections of historical artifacts. And according to one of the guides, it was about 20% of what they actually possess in artifacts that are periodically rotated in and out. It may sound like I'm being somewhat critical, and I guess I am. It was something that was fun, but I guess cynical me just couldn't help myself from being .... somewhat cynical in my mind.

Then we went back to the campground and hung out in the brutal heat - again - before getting ready to go to a show - Sight and Sound's production of David. Describing this event with words in a blog post isn't going to be possible. The whole thing was massive and astonishing. I decided to ask Amber if we could leave a little earlier than she thought, so I could get the truck in a little easier, and I'm glad we did that. We were 45 minutes early to the event, and there was a long line of cars waiting to enter the parking lot. Once we arrived, there is this huge auditorium that is impressive from the outside, but then the theater itself is this giant panoramic stage. And the performance was wonderful, but the staging and special effects were like nothing I had ever scene, and there were even live animals that made there way through the aisles of the crowd up on the stage or down from the state - goats, sheep, lamas, camels, etc.. - and sometimes there were no actors or actresses leading them. It was crazy! The production and the setting and the theater are all very heavily Christian faith-based which was fine for me, but I did wonder if non-Christian folk would be view the production differently. And the performance was over two and a half hours. While that was great, I had a lot of trouble with my knees sitting that long because the seating was pretty tight.

After the performance we ate at a family restaurant not too far away, and then we stopped by a Walgreens for Amber to pick up a few things.

That was a good vacation tourism day!

And on to today. Amber has talked about going to a park to ride bikes; she's talked about going to a beach; and I think we have reservations for a boat ride/show/dinner at 4 p.m. At least it's a little cooler today. Just walking outside to go to the bathhouse this morning to use the restroom was more comfortable that it has been since we started our trip.

7:15 a.m. - We arrived yesterday in Branson. On the way we stopped at a Buc-ees, and I must admit that I wasn't as impressed as I thought I might. It's just a really, really big travel center that makes a lot of stuff for folks to eat, drink, and buy. Then we made our way to our campground, which wasn't exactly the easiest drive, but we did survive. I'm learning very quickly to "Google" RV friendly routes. The campground we are in is fine. It's not as nice as some we have stayed at, but it's okay. In the evening yesterday we wen't for a drive to explore a bit and pick up a few things - stopped at a Camping World and a WalMart. The city isn't really what I would have pictured it, but I think there is a learning curve to understanding it. One thing for sure is that no one goes anywhere fast. There is either a lot of traffic, or the road is up and down and winding around.

Today we have a couple of excursions planned. We are going to Top of the Rock this morning, and later today we are going to go see a show. The heat is HOT. We are supposed to get one more day of really bad heat, and then things are supposed to back off a bit, which will be nice.

6:00 a.m. - Yesterday was a decent second day of Vacation 26. After getting up and around, we drove about 15 minutes west to a tourist trap that Darren had told us about. According to him, it had been a strip club and then was somehow forced out of that line of business, so it became a candy and fudge (and novelty) tourist trap. It was called Uranus Fudge Factory and General Store. It reminded me a little of Wahl Drug in South Dakota, and like Wahl Drug there are a lot of signs on the highway for miles promoting the business. There were a lot of people for 10 a.m. on a Sunday morning, and we walked around and did buy some fudge - I haven't had any yet. I also got a picture with the World's Biggest Belt Buckle! After that, we hung around the camper until Amber got bored and decided we needed to play pickleball. I had talked it out of her earlier saying it was too hot, and it was even hotter then around 2-3 p.m. But we did find our way to the pickleball court which wasn't too far from Darren's house, and we did play a couple of games in the heat. Then we made our way to a local ice cream shop and had a treat. On the way back we stopped at a Dollar General and picked up a couple of items. Last evening we invited Peyton and Darren over for a visit and some supper. I cooked some burgers on the Blackstone, and Amber had plenty of sides to go along with the meal for the four of us. We had a nice visit, even though we had to stay in the camper because of the warm temperatures outside. As I was cooking the burgers, I neighbor pulled in and he was originally from East Peoria, so we talked a bit, and he gave me a tutorial on setting/testing my trailer brakes, so that's something I'm going to try to do today. Accurate trailer brakes will help today, as we are pulling out and heading back out on Interstate 44, which is going to get bigger hills as we head west towards Springfield and then south for Branson. My guess is that I don't have the brakes set strong enough. I just hope I don't screw anything up, but it's something I need to do.

So the plan is to pull out of here and then head to a Buc-ee's in Springfield. Amber has been to a Buc-ee's, but this will be my first time. And then we are making our way to Branson. It's not a long drive today compared to Saturday. It's about 3 hours, and we don't have to be out of here (Doolittle Acres) until 11 a.m., and we can't check into The Embers until after 2 p.m. So this isn't a hurry up day, but it will still be a drive, I'm not real comfortable with. The long downhills for me just aren't fun. I'll be glad to see the campground when we get there.
