Tuesday, June 30

5:25 a.m. - Yesterday was productive for a Monday.  I went for a bike ride for an hour to extend my hour long exercise days to two!  I then went to the office at IC Elementary, but I was asked to close it to anyone else as the temps and humidity is causing the building's floors - especially the east end - to sweat badly creating a slipping risk.  I did get some things checked off my to-do list, which was good before heading back home and getting in the pool to beat the heat.  The Harrisons were already hear, and Kollyns and Amber were about ready to head out the door, and my mom and Mary arrived too.  I guess Jack and Rhonda had already been here and gone, so it wasn't really a pool party, just a chance for everyone to experience the pool with its new liner.   I did consider weed whacking, but in the end I decided I didn't want to do it in the hot temperatures, so I wimped out.  I opted instead for watching some World Cup soccer, and I think I'm finally figuring out more about the rules.  Paraguay beat Germany in a penalty kick shootout, which was exciting.  Then Morocco beat Netherlands in a penalty kick shootout too, but I fell to sleep before the end of that one.

Today should be a "rinse and repeat" of yesterday.  Maybe I'll have the toughness to do some week whacking.  Or as what is usually the case, something unexpected will find me that needs completion.

Monday, June 29

5:23 a.m. - Yesterday was a lot of work, as I figured it would be.  I wanted to get that work in, though, before all this heat arrived, which has arrived today.  I did get in an hour long walk in the morning with the sticks, and it was hard on my left ankle.  I don't know if I can walk an hour today on that ankle, but I need to try.  I could go with a bike ride, but there is a strong wind today, although wind is not as much of a factor with the e-bike.

Also yesterday, I worked on the yard, getting it mowed, and then the big job was tackling the garage.  I moved a shelving unit and a closet to the front of the garage and reorganized a lot of stuff, to help free up some space on the sides of the garage.  This effort also allowed me to a chance to sweep the floor.

After all that was done, I threw on some jeans to go visit mom and dad and get some hay down.  I thought maybe I would work on weeds when I got home, but I didn't have the energy left to attempt that.

And on to today...back to work.  I'm not sure how much I will get done today, but I will give it a whirl.  According to the forecast for weather, the heat will be near or at 100 degrees each day this week.  I tried to contact Carmen yesterday to see if she wanted to bring Caleb and come swim, but I wasn't able to reach her.  If she doesn't appear, I'll be working on the weeds in the ditch as I try to once again reclaim the backyard.

Sunday, June 28

6:14 a.m.  - My working cash is usually not this low, but now it is.  Not only will medical payments drop my funds, my inability to run keeps me from officiating basketball or umpiring softball, which usually supplements my income.  I'm going to have to try to pinch some pennies for awhile.  I'm wondering about pulling out some softball umpiring equipment too, but I'd really like my left knee to be a little stronger.  (And umpiring youth sports doesn't sound very appealing.)

Yesterday wasn't as productive as I was hoping, but it had some good moments.  First, we got the pool up and running.  For now, the pool motor is running, and the heater is running, so the pool should be ready to go today.  I think a few folks got in the water yesterday, but the temp wasn't yet up to the 82 degrees that I would prefer, at a minimum. I haven't checked the pool yet this morning, so I hope everything is still running.

Also yesterday was my last day of checking in with Shawn's house.  I haven't officially heard they are back yet, but I assume they are.  Yesterday was also Luke's last baseball game, and not only Kollyns came home with us, but also Luke, Brinley, and Brooklyn, which meant I wasn't going to be able to mow the yard.  So it was indoors watching kids shows and grabbing a salad for lunch before Kourtney, Jack, Rhonda, Darrin, and Kenzie arrived for a supper of Adolf's.  I didn't sleep the greatest last night because  I ate too much.

Today if the weather clears up, I'd like to work on the yard.  Currently it appears to be raining, so it might be awhile before I'm able to get to that.  I do need to write some bills that need to go out.  And I need to work on the garage to try to organize that in order to get my car with a place to park.  I'd also like to get some exercise in today.  And as any other day, something will likely find me.

Saturday, June 27

5;43 a.m. - Yesterday was busy.  We got up at the campground and made some breakfast, but before that I was up around 4 a.m. as the sun was coming up to get to the house and check out the pool water level.  After that I went to Shawn's house to complete the morning check-in.  After breakfast at the camper, it was pull-out time - and while I don't like pull-out day normally, it's always easier if I've had a while to be at the campground.  Getting the camper back next to the house was also a little less stressful now that Bob helped me with the fence that is between our houses.  Plus the weather held off the rain that was possibly in the area.  So the camper is parked now.

I was really tired after the early morning and camper work, so I chilled out for a bit.  Pete the Pool Guy and his crew arrived to finish up the installation of the new liner, so I talked with them.  Then it was a little more time in the house while the water continued to fill the pool.  then Amber and I picked up Kollyns, Jack, and Rhonda and went to watch the Harrison girls play softball.  After that, we checked on the Strachan home again one the way back home and then watched some television before going to bed.

Even in the summer time, days are busy.

And today?  I know Luke has a baseball game, and then I know Kourtney is arriving from Florida while she spends the week at the John Deere Classic.  The pool is also going to need some work, as the water level will reach the right level to make the attempt to get the pump running - which is always an adventure.  Keep your fingers crossed.  I'll take all the luck I can get.

Friday, June 26 - Pull Out Day

5:54 a.m. - Yesterday was eventful.  First, I had an appointment with Dr. Hussein for my most recently repaired knee, and he said things are looking good and that I'm way ahead of where I was on the first knee - something I was pleasantly already aware of.  As I was heading to my appointment, I saw Pete the Pool Guy pulling into Edgington, which was a good sight to see.  When I returned from my appointment, Pete's crew was hard at work - they had already torn out the old liner and were repairing the existing pool frame to prepare for the new liner.  I didn't realize that the side of the pool is actually metal, and the bottom of the pool is all cement.  I also didn't realize that toads dig holes in the edges of the bottom of the pool in that cement.  The crew working said the area under the liner actually was in "pretty good shape" which was good to hear.  There was also discussion about the light and the electricity that is wired to the pump, so there may be some additional work that needs to be done.  So overnight, we had a hose from the back hydrant and a hose from the front hydrant working to fill the pool with water.  In the late afternoon and evening, Amber and I went back to the camper for one last night.  I burned the rest of the firewood, and Amber and I watched the latest Avatar movie.  (I've never really enjoyed those movies like other people do, and this one is really no exception.)

I didn't sleep very well last night thinking about pull out day here at the campground as well as the pool at home, so I got up early before 5 a.m. and headed out in the truck to check on the pool.  That all checked out, and I took a little time to take care of Bella's morning needs.  Then I went to Shawn's house to do my morning supervision job, and all of that was okay too.  (I'm looking forward to Shawn and Mary returning home, so I don't need to monitor that anymore.)

I think today, then, will start with some breakfast here at the campground before I put the Blackstone back in the camper.  And then I'll work on getting the Eagle all packed up to take back home.  It's always a little stressful getting the camper placed back at home next to the house, but maybe today will be different.  First, I hope the rain holds off, and second, I'm going to try Bob's idea to remove some fence prior to backing the camper up and in.

After that...I'm sure there were be unloading things to complete at home, and then I don't know what is on the schedule.  I think Amber said the Harrison girls have a game tonight.

Thursday, June 25

7:34 a.m. - Yesterday I drove to Fort Madison and got to spend some time with Carmen and Caleb.  We went to breakfast at the Colony, and Carmen was able to eat some breakfast and keep it down.  Then we went back to the house, and I helped set up the "water park" which was an inflatable pool that actually was a challenge.  Then I stopped by the casino in Burlington for a about an hour and then headed back.  After a couple hours with Kollyns and Amber, Amber was headed out, and I was headed to Shawn's when Pete the Pool Guy appeared.  So I spoke with him for a bit, then went to Shawn's, then went back home and waited for the sump pump to drain the pool, then went to the campground for a quiet night.

So now I'm up early, picked up around the camper and did some dishes, got home to check on things there, went to Shawn's to take care of his pool and check the house, and now am going to get cleaned up to go to see Dr. Hussain.  After that, I don't know what is going to happen.  I just hope Pete the Pool Guy gets here and installs that dang pool liner and we are working on filling the pool by the end of the day.

Wednesday, June 24

5:42 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day.  In the morning, I had my first attempt at campfire coffee, and it was a bit of a battle, but it was okay.  I think I could have had more coffee grounds, and I learned that the fire is a challenging first part of the process.  If there aren't any hot coals left from the night before, then starting a new fire is a requirement, and then the fire needs to be a good fit for the coffee pot.  After coffee, Amber went home, and that gave me a chance to try a ski walk and bike ride.  I did both, which was good for the knee.  I need to start a daily effort of getting in more exercise now.  After that, I cleaned up and went to have lunch with Chase.  It was nice to see him.  We didn't have any breakthrough moments, and there weren't any serious conversations.  I don't know what the future holds or what Chase sees for his future.  I just know it was nice to spend some time with him.

On my way home, I stopped for diesel.  I needed to start fueling up, and $200 later, the truck's tanks still aren't full.  Getting a total fill-up with the truck certainly is hard on the wallet.  I made my way back to the campground to drop off the firewood and then head to the house.  I wasn't sure the weather was going to cooperate, but I was able to get the yard mowed - a good task to get out of the way that should get me through to the weekend before having to do it again.  Then I came back to the camper to have some supper and a campfire.  I finished off some leftovers in the fridge, and then mom came over for some campfire time.  It was another beautiful night for campfire chat.

And on to today.  I'm going to head down to Fort Madison this morning to visit with  the Hoenigs.  Then I'm not sure what the rest of the day is going to be.  I will head to Shawn's to check on his place, but other than that, I just don't know.  I was supposed to have my last physical therapy session this morning, but I got a call to change the time to the afternoon, but I didn't want to do that.  With that in mind, I just canceled, so no more physical therapy is scheduled.  I'll see Dr. Hussain tomorrow, and then ORA should be in my rear view mirror for awhile.

Tuesday, June 23

5:42 a.m. - Yesterday was eventful.  Amber wanted to go for a bike ride with the the e-bikes on the Muscatine river trail, but she wanted to go before she was scheduled to join the Harrisons at Toy Story 5.  There just wasn't enough time in the morning to get that done, so I joined the crew for the movie, and it was really good - and 3D too!  I remember watch Toy Story a lot with my own children back in the day, so it brought back some good memories watching with the grandchildren.  After the movie, Amber and I did that bike ride, which means I successfully got the bikes to the trail with the hitch.  I'm still nervous about the weight of the bikes, and I'd really like to get Amber's battery off of her bike before loading them up.  Then it was back to the campground.  (By the way, we had McDonald's for lunch with the Harrisons, and on the way to the movie, we stopped at Walmart for some supplies.)  I finally got in a shower at the bathhouse, and then we lounged a bit before heading back home.  I needed to check on Shawn's house, and then we needed to wait for Amber's buyer to pick up a chair she sold.  Then we came back to the campground and it was just too beautiful of a night not to have a fire, so that's what I did.  It was just one of "those nights" - cool and quiet and absolutely no wind - PERFECT.  (It helps that there are only three campers in the campground right now.)  And then it was finishing up my Lincoln movie on YouTube and off to bed.  I did sleep a little better last night, so that was good.

And today....I got up and started up the fire again, as I'm making my first attempt at campfire coffee.  Later today, I have a lunch date with Chase that I'm looking forward to.  And, of course, I need to stop by Shawn's and check on the house and do a little work with the pool.  The weather appears to be nice again today.  I'm sure there will be other things that come up that need some attention.  I would like to get to mowing the yard at home again soon, but I don't think that is going to happen today.

Monday, June 22

6:39 a.m. - The rain has stopped...finally.  The rain started around 8 a.m. yesterday, and it honestly lasted about 11 hours.  My idea was to leave Haven Hills early, and then hopefully get to Loud Thunder early in order to avoid the heavy rain.  I called the Loud Thunder office, and Sawyer was working, so he told me the campsite was open and I could come early.  So I loaded up the camper and headed to the campsite.  It was light rain, but it eventually got much heavier, so getting to Loud Thunder by around 9:30 a.m. was good.  The rest of the day was pretty much spent indoors - lots of MeTV, but I did get outside under the awning during the light rain to cook up the steaks we had brought, so at least we had a good supper.  Around 11 a.m., Amber and I headed to Shivers and got a sandwich and some ice cream for mom and dad to see dad for Father's Day.  Of course, I got some ice cream too.  And just after that visit, Amber and I made our first trip to Shawn's to check on his house.  He's got a problem of a leak in the basement during heavy rain events.  During that check it was fine, but I went back later in the afternoon, and it was a bigger problem.  I needed to move some things around and adjust the funnel he has rigged up, as well as dry up some water.

Today I have some odd stuff to accomplish.  I'm not sure of the order of the day, but I need to get some firewood, check on Shawn's house, check on our house and feed Bella, and make a trip to Aledo for some camping supplies and water.

One other thing that happened last night that was the highlight was that Chase contacted me.  I honestly had hoped that he would attempt to reach out for Father's Day.  I hope to see him sometime this week while I take some days off - even if it is just a quick visit to see him.

Sunday, June 21 - Happy Father's Day, Dad!

6:57 a.m. - It's Father's Day, and as expected, the rain is moving in.  It's going to be a soggy pull out from Haven Hills, so I'm glad I just decided to make a reservation at Loud Thunder.  I'm just going to take the camper there and drop it and go back later to set it up.  I'll just put on the rain coat and get cold and wet.

Yesterday wasn't one of my better days.  Amber purchased an e-bike for my birthday.  She worked really hard to purchase it and surprise me with it, and I didn't handle that well at all.  I just never really wanted an e-bike for a variety of reasons, and I had consistently expressed that to Amber.  As with any gift that someone sends, though, a person should be gracious and humble and appreciative, and I wasn't.  Eventually, I got the e-bike back to the campground and played with it and figured out how to operate it.  I still am not sold on using that bike for exercise, so I plan on keeping my old bike for now for exercise purposes.  In the afternoon, Makenzie and the Harrison kids stopped by to drop off a gift for Amber, and then Jack, Rhonda, Aaron, and Lila visited.  After the Harrisons left, we went to Happy Joe's in Aledo for supper.  I didn't sleep well thinking about the incoming rain and the bikes, so I might be taking a nap somehow.  As mentioned before, I need to get the camper moved, and I would like to stop by the farm and visit dad.

Saturday, June 20

6:00 a.m. - I pulled the trailer into Haven Hills yesterday, and we got settled in.  The place isn't really my kind of place, but that's okay.  Plus, it will probably improve after they get all the construction done that they are planning to do.  Yesterday, Amber got to spend some time by the pool, which was nice.  Then for supper we had sliders cooked on the Blackstone, and Jack and Rhonda visited for a bit, and Rhonda brought some apple crisp.

Friday, June 19

6:32 a.m. - It's Friday!  It's been another long week, and a long summer week!

Yesterday, we returned from Sringfield and our leadership activity for the admin group.  The activity was hosted by Battlefield Leadership, and the activity was titled Lessons from Lincoln.  I liked it for me; it was "okay" for the admin group.  There was a lot of historical information that was shared/presented by the facilitator.  There was the occasional nugget information that was new for me, and there was a new Lincoln movie that I have never experienced, so I'll get trying to watch that sometime.  And yes, there was the occasional discussion in and among the admin team of applying the information to our admin efforts.   I tried to take opportunities to head that direction with discussion contributions, but there weren't a lot of other attempts.  So for some folks who weren't interested in the Lincoln history, it was a longer day.  The hotel was fine, the food was good, the drive to and back wasn't horrible.  All in all, it was okay for me.

Today I have the day off from physical therapy and the IC Elementary office.  We've reserved a campsite at Haven Hills, so my objective is to get the camper hooked up, throw some clothes in the truck, and head to Aledo.  I'm a little disappointed that the weather forecast is now calling for a lot of rain on Sunday - I'm going to have to figure out what to do about that.  That might mean just taking the camper to Loud Thunder rather than bringing it home and battling with the mud next to the house.

Thursday, June 18 - Happy Birthday Amber!

5:11 a.m. - I'm sitting in the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield, Illinois.  I have a nice room with two beds all to myself.  It's just after 5, and I'm up even though I don't have to be down to the conference until 8 a.m. at the earliest.  I didn't sleep well, but that's not unusual.  And I didn't stay up late, and I didn't drink but one Sam Adams at supper - and the supper was really good.

Yesterday was an accomplishing day I guess, but weather seemed to always be around.   The plan was to get to Farm-N-Fleet and get tires on the truck.  And instead of waiting in the service center, I would walk down and try that new coffee place on the other side of Menards.  And then the rain came and ruined those plans.  It was just starting to rain in Edgington at around 7:15 a.m. when I left, and it rained the entire time, even after the truck was done, and I drove to the coffee place to try it out.  (The coffee and breakfast burrito were really good.)  And it was still raining when I got back home, and it was after 11 a.m.  And yes it kept raining - even until I drove up to the school to get with my ride to head to Springfield at 1 p.m.  And yes the backyard is once again a lake, so I'm glad I mowed the grass on Tuesday.  And it would have been nice to have been done with the weather, but no.  After arriving in Springfield around 4 p.m., then the supercell storms arrived, and a tornado warning erupted with sirens going off in the city.  Needless to say, I got to experience my first basement adventure in a hotel while talking to guests and hanging out in the basement while the storm passed.  That one was a confirmed tornado just north of us, but little did I know then that the East Central portion of the state was in for a tornado outbreak.  When I got back to my room in the evening around 8 p.m. there were tornado warnings south and east of Springfield, and I imagine there are a lot of folks in clean-up mode this morning.  The conference I'm attending is called "Lessons from Abraham Lincoln" by a company called Battlefield Leadership. Our facilitator is a graduate of West Point, and she served three tours in Iraq.  She later returned to teach at West Point before taking this job and is listed as the Chief Operating Officer and senior historian of Battlefield Leadership.  So she's a pretty big deal, but yet she seems really down to earth - at least she was last night.  She presented our group with a lot of Lincoln history background, which was really fun for me, but I'm wondering what the other admin were thinking - whether it was boring to them or not.  Also down here are Marcus, Taylor, Ty, Jon, Sara, Brittany, Daphne, Brock, and Jenna.  There are six "case studies" in the booklet that we received last night, and there are areas of "field notes" that apparently we are going to be writing down.  The case studies are reading passages, but there really aren't directions/instructions pointing to a direction of what the assignment for each reading passage will be.  And again, the reading passages are some of the biggest events of Lincoln's presidency, so I'm wondering what the other admin will think.  So from 9-noon, we'll be working with these case studies, and then we are scheduled to break for lunch from noon-1.  We have another hour of work after lunch, and then we are scheduled to visit the Lincoln Museum, which isn't far from this hotel.  I don't know how long we'll be at the museum, and then we will head home.  It's going to be a long day, and I'm not sure I'm going to get home in time to join Amber at Texas Roadhouse for supper for her birthday.  I hope she has a good day and is able to some fun stuff.  I think she was planning to go on a bike ride with Kristi to start the day.

Wednesday, June 17

5:12 a.m. - Today is supposed to be yet another day of storms - the first wave this morning and the second w

ave later today.  The worst of the worst is supposed to be Central Illinois, which is sort of good.  The storms won't be here, but unfortunately, the trip I'm going on is going right into the area that is forecast to have a tornado outbreak.  That's just great.  I am looking forward to that trip, though, that features on leadership and uses Lincoln as the topic.  Before that, though, I'm headed into Farm-n-Fleet this morning with the truck to get new tires.  I don't really want to spend the money right now, but it needs to be done.  I'm not getting the exact same tires as are on there now, so I'm also hoping that I've selected quality tires that will meet our needs.  If the weather is cooperating, I hope to walk down to a coffee shop from Farm-n-Fleet to try it out.  It's a good thing there aren't any slots nearby.

Yesterday was a busy day.  I did have a physical therapy appointment, and that went well.  Then I headed off to IC Elementary, and got some work done, including some important work.  On Monday night the recommendation for a kindergarten teacher was approved, so now all of our staff is set for the school year.  That's BIG!  I just hope I don't have any more staff to hire, despite what I know is coming at the end of first semester.  And I won't have to complete one of the hires, as that is a kitchen worker.  I think the only position I will have to handle is the paraprofessional position.

After the work at the office, the day got busier.  I went to mom and dad's and worked on their hedge in the front of the house.  Then at home, I got the yard mowed.  Amber and I wrapped up the evening with a good supper (breakfast for supper), and then we got in the hot tub for a bit.  I finished the night watching some Cubs baseball and some World Cup soccer.

Yesterday, the decision was made to camp this weekend at Haven Hills - that's the new campground near Aledo that I swore I would never go to because of the cost.  Amber, though, would like to try it, and it's her birthday, so let's do it.  I really would like it to go well, so we have another local campground to attend, but this is more of a "resort", so if it goes well this weekend, maybe this would be a once a summer campground for us.  Don't get me wrong - a resort is nice; I'm just cheap and don't want to pay $80 per night when I can go to other places locally for $30 a night.

Tuesday, June 16

6:01 a.m. - Yesterday was a mixed day of productiveness.  Kollyns was here, so I spent a little time with her.  I did get to the office for a bit and spoke with the custodians who are working on the building.  Then I headed into the Quad Cities for some items - first it was stopping a Kwik Star to fill up the Escape with gas, which was more money than I wanted.  Gas prices do show some signs of going down now that DJT has announced that "a deal" has been reached with the Iran - the country we bombed the crap out of, who closed the Strait of Hormuz, whose government did survive.  After gas, I stopped by 180 to drop off mail for Chase.  I didn't attempt to speak with him, but at least I dropped off the mail and visited where he is at.  Then I headed to Moline to do some shopping for Amber's birthday.  That included heading to Menard's to check on closet doors, which were more money than I anticipated, so I passed on those.  Then it was back home for the rest of the day and evening.  I watched the Cubs game, who did win in come-from-behind fashion, so that was nice.  One other thing I did yesterday was purchase and schedule installation new tires for the truck, which was stressful.  I feared the truck needed tires, and I really don't want to go on vacation constantly worrying about tires, so I finally checked the manufacture date on the tires and discovered they are 2019 tires.  The tread really isn't that bad, but ever since blowing a tire on the camper the very first summer trip we took, I've grown to be paranoid about tires that look okay but are just old.  I didn't end up replacing the Michelin tires; I went with some Goodyear tires instead since Farm-n-Fleet is buying a buy 3 and get one free special.  I cringe at spending $1,200 for tires, but I honestly feared it was going to be more than that.   I'll be taking the truck into Farm-n-Fleet, then, on Wednesday to get that task accomplished, which will hurt the wallet but help my peace of mind.

Today I have a physical therapy appointment, and I'd like to get some yard work done prior to leaving tomorrow for Springfield and the next batch of rain coming in.  I'll make an appearance at the office too and make sure that the kindergarten teacher got approved at last night's BOE meeting.  The weather is supposed to be cool today, so I need to gather my energy and get the yard mowed.  If I have time and energy remaining, I'll head to mom and dad's and work on their bushes.  And who knows what else will fall in my lap for the day?

Monday, June 15

5:58 a.m. -  Yesterday wasn't too busy, which was nice.  In the morning, Amber and I spent some time in the hot tub, and then we went for a bike ride on the Milan bike trail.  The winds gave me a battle - about 40 minutes on that bike bath was a workout for the left leg, but it was good for it.  That being said, I won't be doing any biking today.  Then I spent the rest of the day at home.  I did work on Amber's bicycle rack, and I did finish reading my book.  Also, I watched Caroline beat Las Vegas for the Stanley Cup.

Yesterday, apparently the U.S. and DJT reached a "deal" with Iran.  I'm still a little confused over the U.S. effort to spend billions of dollars, kill many people, and create high prices for Americans just to reach a deal.  Apparently the strait of Hormuz will be open as a result of the deal - the damn strait was open before this whole mess started!  So since February 28, what has been accomplished?

I finished reading my book yesterday, which I really enjoyed.  For years, I had been curious about President Lincoln's role with Native Americans.  I knew he had spent some time in the Illinois State Militia in the Black Hawk War, and I knew President Lincoln approved the hanging of 38 Dakota in Minnesota during the Civil War.  I have been curious, though, why Lincoln seemed to be such a champion for abolishing slavery for African Americans yet didn't seem near as interested in assisting Native Americans in their issues with white immigrants through through westward expansion.  I'm not suggesting that reading a couple of books helped me gain complete understanding, but the two books I read helped me get a better understanding of the Dakota War and Lincoln's role in it.  To be honest, the Dakota War isn't much different than the Black Hawk War in principle.  Members of the Dakota felt they had been wronged, just like members of the Sac Fox.  Members of both tribes in both situations made a decision to stand up for themselves, even though not all members or even other tribes agreed with the decision.  Both wars did include skirmishes with white settlers and battles with state militia and/or federal troops.  And both wars end with pretty much extinction of both tribes.  And Little Crow of the Dakota and Black Hawk of the Sac Fox end up as tragic leaders who basically lead their groups to dismal endings.

It seemed to me, though, interesting that President Lincoln's story of his presidency often doesn't even include his involvement with the Dakota in 1862.  The recent biography I reread that was over 400 pages barely even mentions it.  And what do today's Native Americans feel about the president?  In the end for my perspective, I do feel that Lincoln's efforts with Native Americans should receive more recognition.  He did make efforts, and his efforts were likely influenced by is family's experiences with Native Americans during Lincoln's childhood and what he viewed in the Black Hawk War.  It seems to me that Lincoln felt that Native Americans would need to get with the white program, including and agriculture way of life that involved growing food versus traveling and hunting/foraging for food.  It also seems to me that Lincoln felt that African Americans deserved the opportunity to get with the white program instead of enslavement.  Keep in mind, it seems to me that Lincoln believed that white people were superior, and he understood that getting all the groups of people to live in harmony may not be doable.  In fact, Lincoln explored options for Africans to have land/life in a different part of the world, just like finding different areas for Native Americans to live.  I am wondering if Lincoln would have been able to make a different impact if the Civil War would have been different or if it wouldn't have occurred at all.  And in regards to the biggest hanging in American history that Lincoln approved?  Well, he actually intervened the situation which originally had proposed hanging over 200 Dakota that had been found to have participated in the war, but he reviewed all of those situations and his administration reduced the hangings to 38 and instead had the others imprisoned and later released.  It seems that Lincoln knew that there needed to be accountability, but he also intervened to attempt to have each case reviewed for legality.  The unfortunate reality seems to be that the United States wasn't doing a very good job in trying to maintain a positive relationship with Native Americans prior to and during Lincoln's presidency.  The White answer was for Native Americans to get with the White Program, and that didn't sit well with all Native Americans.  In reading the book, though, it was interesting to get the perspective of "full blood indians" that had gotten with the program and were sympathetic with the "white way", as well as "mixed blood folks" who found themselves in a difficult position of not being truly accepted by either group, which was similar to "mixed blood Africans" in the United States.

So in the end, can the total blame go on either side... no.  Would it have been nice to see people just find a way to appreciate each other and get along?...yes.  And here we are in 2026, and the "white America" sentiment still exists..."white America" still just wants everyone to get with the program.

What about today?  I'll be heading to school for a bit, and I'd like to get the yard mowed prior to heading to Springfield this week.  I also need to help mom and dad with some of their yard work.  I'd also like to get at least a stretch in this morning.  Let's see what else the day brings.
