5:49 a.m. - Last week of officiating basketball; last week of officiating volleyball; first week of umpiring high school softball. I wonder if COVID will allow us to complete the whole spring sport season. I know the weather isn't being very cooperative in the near future, as I heard snow is in the forecast this week - yikes. Since I won't be going to Washington, D.C. this summer, I have a chance to work post-season softball again now. Two years ago I worked a Sectional final, and then last year everything was shut down during the lockdown. Perhaps this year I'll get to work another Sectional or even a Supersectional. This year will be different, though, because all four classes are going to run at the same time, and that means more umpires are going to be needed. This week in the classroom, we'll have a variety of presentations to view. I'll try to tell students that there is something in every presentation for everyone, but they won't listen. Unfortunately, many will zone out if they don't initially think the path is the right one for them. Today will be hard for many because of the price tag. Monmouth College total package is $52,000 per year. Big yikes! Tomorrow is an off day, and we are going to spend some time talking about price after a free read session. I hope to help students better understand why cost differences exist. Yesterday, was busy. After umpiring, I broke down cardboard and took it to the recycling containers in Milan. Then I went to my parents' house and help mom with some little projects around the farm she needed help with. She's such a go-getter. They weren't big things - had to move the chickens, change a battery in the gator, move some rocks, get a couple of outside barn doors back on their hinges, just little things that she is unable to do and my dad can't do because of his health issues. Then I came home and tried to tackle the leveling of my mower deck. I was able to tighten the wheels, but I still don't have the deck correct. The right side is about an inch lower than the left side, and I tried every thing I can think of so far without removing the mower deck. I'm afraid that removing the deck may be my next option.
