6:25 a.m. - Last night I worked junior high girls basketball. And as challenging as that work is because it seems like there is a whistle every five seconds and 1,000 jump balls, I'd still rather do that than work volleyball. But tonight it's on to volleyball! Also last night I came home and watched some of the cable news coverage regarding the most recent difficulties up in Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Apparently a female police officer with 26 years on the job "accidentally" shot a 20-year old black man and killed him during a traffic stop. He was pulled over on a warrant for a misdemeanor, and bodycam video showed he was being handcuffed, but then he attempted to escape. He's scrambling to get away in the car while police are attempting to basically catch him and she yells taser but then says she shot him. How in the hell does an officer mistake a taser for a handgun? Is that possible? Does it happen often? I'm going to have to ask my friend about that one. That HAS to be something that never happens, right? There is already enough going on in that SAME county with the trial of Mr. Chauvin, and now this? So for the past two nights there has been a curfew, and for the past two nights people have violated the curfew, so people and police have clashed. Should someone die for a damn traffic stop? No. Should someone attempt to escape police when being arrested and handcuffed? No. Does the community want law enforcement to enforce laws? Yes. Does the community want people to obey commands of law enforcement? Yes. So how in the hell do we have to deal with a young black male attempting to flee police on a misdemeanor warrant that is then shot by an experienced white female police officer who thought she was holding a taser? I would be more inclined to believe that's some sort of short story fiction than reality. But it is what it is, and what it is ends up being giant freaking mess with a man dead, an officer's career over, and a lot of civil unrest. Ugh. In other news, today is SAT day. For me, it's the longest 4 hours of the school year. Supervising an SAT assessment is definitely no fun. On the other hand, it's not five hours because students are not completing the essay, which I have mixed emotions about because I've been trying to prepare students for the essay all year long.
