Wednesday, April 14

6:31 - Unfortunately last night I spent too much of my evening reviewing essay assignments to detect incidents of cheating.  When students' Google Drives are saved from year-to-year, it's very easy for seniors to digitally pass on their work to juniors in English III.  The juniors that secure these past essays then just paste them onto a doc for themselves and present the work on their own.  My ability to have photographic memory and remember essays from year-to-year isn't very good.  This isn't anything new, and I'm sure that more "twice-used" essays pass under my radar than I discover.  Last night, though, was another indication that I'm going to have to do more work to create authentic prompts each year and perhaps rotate them at least every three or four years.  That still doesn't mean a sibling couldn't pass down the work, but perhaps it would limit some of the cheating that goes on.  This school year has not been a great example of "academic integrity" since students are basically allowed to skip class but still allowed to go to employment positions during class or are allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities or are not required to attend livestream recordings of class sessions.  It's a big mess.  I guess I can try to hope that more students than not are intrinsically motivated to do their own work because its the right thing to do, but when cheating becomes easier and easier, it's more and more attractive to take the short cuts.  I'm still not done with the "investigation"...I'll have to work on it additionally today.  About today...it's the first trial of a training path representative visiting us.  This too presents technological issues.  Somehow I need to get work from students through a Google Form that is their own, review it for completion, and then get their work back to them in a timely manner.  I think I can do it through spreadsheets, but it will be challenging to detect cheating.  The presenters that are visiting may have about half the time as in past years due to all the start-up and shutdown procedures that exist each period as well as the shortened day.  Tonight, it's volleyball officiating again.  Have I mentioned that I'm ready for volleyball to end?
