Tuesday, January 9 - The Big One!

6:50 a.m. - It arrived last night...the Big Snow of 2024.  Last night the power went out, and I was worried.  Now the power is back on, but I fear it will go out again, so I'm going to do this computer work quick and then get then go outside and commence to get the generator set up.  Last I heard we were in the 10-15 inches of snow range....yikes.  Needless to say, there is no school today.

A variety of things worked well yesterday, but what didn't work out is a concern about Kourtney.  She isn't feeling well, and she had to go to the emergency room last night, so Tucker and Rosie are here this morning.

So today, I'm going to be getting my exercise by shoveling some snow.  I'll write more later today or give a whole recap tomorrow.

2:57 p.m. update  - I can't believe how the day has worked so far....it was supposed to be simple.  Go shovel the driveway...get the generator ready...watch the Southwell grandchildren until they got picked up.  How could that possibly go bad?  Here's how....

The snow was very heavy wet snow, which has an advantage in packing very well.  The disadvantage is that it's just heavier.  So I pretty much have the driveway cleared and here comes Pat - Rosie's and Tucker's dad...only there's a problem.  He has a flat tire.  And then I look at him and he indicates two flat tires.  Sure enough...he was driving Kourtney's Telluride, and went through the school parking lot which hadn't been plowed, and he hit the island curb and popped the tires on the driver's side.  He must have hit it hard, and I can't imagine the shock he must have experienced while driving.  So the next step was to try to solve his problem of two blown tires on his wife's SUV.  Yikes.  Needless to say the tire changing job was a battle.  He pulled it into the garage after I eventually got our cars out...then he tried to get the blown tires off with all the rinky-dink tire changing stuff that comes with the car...we couldn't do it.  The rims were stuck hard....so after his car jack failed broke, I went next door and got better equipment from Brandon - sledge hammer, floor jack, and eventually a jack stand.  I actually transported those items on a sled borrowed from him.  The improved equipment helped, along with using the sledgehammer mightily to pound the damn tires off.  Then Pat's mom and boyfriend took him and the rims to get new tires.  A couple hours later and with some help from Firestone, we got the tires back on, and he made his way home.  That was about an hour ago.

While waiting for him to return, Marcus asked me if I could help offload a food delivery that was scheduled to go to the school(s).  I'm not exactly sure how that was supposed to work, but eventually he called back to tell me that they were going to wait until tomorrow to deliver...thank goodness.

So with no food to offload, and Pat and the grandchildren gone home, I got the garage back together and made sure the generator was going to run.  It did.  In the event that it needs used tonight due to another power outage, it should be ready.  I'm still not exactly sure how to hook it up to the house, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.  I even went up to the Roketstop and filled up the gas can to be sure we had as much fuel as possible in the event of an extended power outage.

I'm not sure if we will have school or not tomorrow.  I guess it just depends on how long this wind keeps up...it's pretty strong now and expected to get stronger throughout the night up to 45 mph wind gusts until about 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.  I just looked at the list of closings, and no one has issued a closing for tomorrow yet.

So now I'm very, very tired, but I did have a little chili for lunch while waiting for Pat to return with his tires.  I think I'm finally going to be able to go and try out the hot tub and relax.  I also have a book to read, so that's something I can do.  Tonight, I think it's watch some television...hopefully there are some good basketball games to watch.

I hope the adventures of the day are over for the rest of the afternoon and evening.
