Wednesday, Jan. 31

6:11 a.m. - That's My Job by Conway Twitty is a song that came across my speakers at school yesterday.  It tugged at my heart, and I sent a Facebook message to Cole, Carmen, and Chase.  It's a song that basically says a ob as a father is to try to do everything possible to help our kids...no matter what that means - little things, big things, whatever.  It's a bit of a gut wrenching song for me because of my divorce with my ex-wife.  There is always regret looming in my mind and heart that I didn't do my job in somehow figuring out a way to be a better husband in the marriage and therefore remaining closer to my kids.  It's like I will spend the rest of my life attempting to make up for that failure and never completely being able to do it.  So the song for me is bittersweet....reminds me that I still have a job; reminds me to that I'll always fall a little short.  That's life, though, isn't it?  My guess is that most of us probably have a regret here or there that just isn't completely fixable...maybe that's something that keeps us doing good and trying to be better moving forward.

Yesterday was another routine day followed by another routine night.  I've got to get Marcus to stop trying to reason so much with coaches.  He's just got to accept that sometimes coaches just aren't going to like a call and that's okay.  Coach asks a question, and we supply an answer.  If the answer isn't good enough, then at that point we just have to agree to disagree and move on.

Tonight at have a damn freshmen game at AlWood.  I accepted this game to help out the assignor, but now I'm regretting that decision.  I'd rather have a night off at this point.  The foot is feeling a little better, but I woke up with my back hurting...geez.  I've got aches and pains moving around all over the place.  It's a good thing the end of the basketball season is getting nearer.

Tuesday, January 30 - Pay Day!

5:58 a.m. - Following a fairly routine day at school, we went to AlWood for Monday night girls basketball.  Usually Monday nights aren't good, and last night didn't disappoint in that category.  The fresh/soph game took about 90 minutes with all the fouls and violations and everything else we had to call.  It was a struggle.  Tony and I worked with a new guy - Isaac Frank.  He's only in his second year of officiating, and he's already been thrown in to work varsity games.  He held his own and asked lots of questions and was responsive to feedback - that's a good combination of continuing to get better.

My foot really bothered me last night, so I tried my old shoes and that helped.  Maybe I'll just have to wear the old shoes for awhile.  My leg does feel better this morning.

Today should be another routine school day, and tonight we just have one game in Geneseo, which is nice.  Our third is also a veteran guy, so working the game should be okay.  If the weather can continue to cooperate, a series of routine days would be a welcome sight.  I'm okay if the last of the big snows for the winter season are behind us.  We had ourselves a doozy of a January, so it would be perfectly okay if February came and went just nice and quiet.

Monday, January 29 - Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad

5:30 a.m. - Yesterday, I spent some time with Cole in the afternoon.  I took him over to Davenport get a part for his car.  He thinks he's got the problem figured out, so I hope he's right and can get it fixed today.  While we were out and about, we also stopped at Pizza Ranch and had supper.  It was nice to spend some time with him, as I hadn't seen him for a couple of weeks.  After seeing him, I then stopped by my parents house to have a visit.  Dad was sleeping, but I watched the rest of the 49ers versus Lions game with mom and had a chance to catch up on life with her.  And while I was at it, I got down some hay for her four legged horse companions.

Today hopefully will be a normal Monday.  The fog is pretty heavy out right now, but we need a good full week of classes to finally get back in the groove for second semester.  This week marks two weeks left in the basketball officiating schedule.  My dang right foot is hurting pretty good today.  I may switch shoes for my games tonight and see if I can get some relief.

Sunday, January 28

8:44 a.m. - Yesterday went fine.  Amber and I went and watched Brooklyn's first basketball game, which was a hoot.  It all reminded me when I was coaching Chase, Carmen, and Cole as well as all of those Saturday and Sunday mornings with the youth leagues and practices that I worked with.  That seems like a long time ago, and yet I think I could do it all over again.  After that, I quickly got ready to go do some officiating.  Marcus and I worked with Mario Melendez, as he filled in for Shawn who couldn't make it.  Mario has been to the state finals twice, and he's had some health problems in recent years.  He's a good guy and a good official.  We had Galesburg and United Township girls, and it was a big game.  Galesburg didn't play well, and UT played really well.  Of course, from Galesburg spectators standpoint, the officials were terrible.  Galesburg may have the most stupid fans in the area.  It's one thing to blame the officials for everything, but their comments are just flat ignorant and dumb.

Upon returning home there were three grandchildren and one granddog waiting for my arrival, so it definitely wasn't the quiet night I had hoped for.  And later in the night Greg called and needed to have some space from his house, so we watched the Rockridge boys basketball team play on the television and had a bit of a friend-to-friend therapy situation.  I'm afraid Greg's relationship with his wife may be past fixing.  When he left and the Rockets lost, it was me and Luke trying to get some sleep.  Let me tell you that little Luke is not the best sleeping buddy - I think a nap today is on the agenda.

So Amber battled through the morning with Brooklyn and Brinley on getting ready for Sunday school, but the battle ended and off they went.  Now it's just Sophie and I in a quiet house.  It's a mess with toys scattered everywhere, but I'll make an attempt at those.  Also there is the smell of cooked broccoli in the air, as I think later on Amber is going to make a chicken and broccoli pasta bake.  I'm going to use the quiet time to gather my thoughts, and work on my foot.  It's hurting pretty good today...the usual pain and stiffness in the knee has definitely settled in my foot.  Ice therapy and the hot tub is going to get some action.  I'm also going to go to Mom and Dad's as I'm pretty sure tomorrow is their anniversary.  Amber is working this afternoon, so I'll probably go see them then and watch some football.  I'm going to be routing for the Lions and Ravens to win and go to the Super Bowl against each other.  Tonight....lounge and get ready for the work week.

Saturday, January 27

7:53 a.m. - I honestly don't know how yesterday could have gone much better.  The school day went fine; I got a lot done, and I feel like I've got English III back on track.  Monday we can be back and the groove and go full steam ahead.  I haven't looked at the forecast, so maybe if Mother Nature and Old Man Winter don't intervene, we can get rolling.  Also our game last night at Macomb was super easy.  The Macomb people weren't all that friendly, and the drive sort of sucked with all the fog, but the third guy we worked with was a good, young official, and the game was a route.  We did more driving than officiating.

Today, I'm going to hustle to throw on some clothes and go see Brooklyn's first basketball game.  Then I'm coming home and getting ready to officiate in Galesburg.  We have one afternoon game, which still surprises me because I thought for sure I'd get assigned a night game somewhere.  And then when I get home from the game, I'm not real sure what I'll be doing.

Friday, January 26

5:31 a.m. - I think we are going to make it!  We are going to school three days in a row in 2024.  It's still foggy; actually it's been pretty foggy and dreary for the last few days, but the snow and ice and frigid temperatures have stayed away.  And for the first time this week, I get to teach a little bit!

Yesterday, I was again able to get a lot of work done.  Instead of students self-evaluating their assignments, I had time to go over them and make comments and score them.  And then last night, our crew of Marcus, Tony, and me went to Alleman and officiated a Western Big Six game between Alleman and Rock Island.  It was a bit of a doozy, but we got through it.  Plus it was Tony's firs Western Big Six game.  And we had a technical foul in the game.  That's three games in a row now that one of my partners has assessed a technical foul.  I'd like that string of items to stop.  Tonight it's off to Macomb.  It's a long trip, but we only have one game.  That's two nights in a row of that.  It's nice to have nights that don't feature a fresh/soph game and a varsity game or two varsity games.  More often than not, we work two games a night.  One game a night is nice on the old legs.

So let's get through this week, get a couple of games in, and then have a nice Sunday watching football.  I also am trying to set up a visit with Cole.  I haven't seen him in awhile, so I'm hoping to catch up with him - maybe go out for a cup of coffee or have some breakfast or lunch.

Thursday, January 25

5:56 a.m. - Baby it's foggy out there!  On the other hand, we are going to school for a second day in a row, and we have a legitimate shot and breaking a record for second semester and going for a third day in a row tomorrow!  We are making strides.

Yesterday was a "ho-hum" of a return.  The students have to receive mandatory internet safety training each school year, so Ms. Petersen takes them through a short presentation on an 11:30 dismissal day about this time every year.  I get the students to the auditorium and go back to my classroom.  There isn't really any English instruction for the day, but with only 20 minutes each class period, the internet training thing is a good way to use the day productively.  I managed to get some things accomplished, including scoring some assignments that I plan on finishing today.  Last night didn't exactly go so well on the basketball court.  The game was at Galva, which means it was a drive of over an hour and the fog didn't make it any easier.  It was also a girls game, and both programs are struggling right now, so the game was "competitive".  And there weren't many spectators because the same schools' boys teams were playing at Stark County.  The fresh-soph game was decided in the closing seconds, and the varsity ended up with a technical foul assessed to the Galva bench in the closing seconds, which had an impact on the game.

As an official, you really want to try to do everything humanly possible to avoid assessing a technical foul late in the game when the game is close.  You really don't want a technical foul to be a determining factor.  Unfortunately one of my partners last night couldn't resist assessing the Galva assistant coach a technical foul.  The assistant coach wasn't happy about something the official had said to one of the Galva players, so he had to give his opinion.  Then my partner decided he wasn't going to be shown up, so he decided to assess the technical.  I did my best to intervene and calm the waters, so things didn't get worse, and I was worried for a quick moment that it wasn't going to stop.  Finally the coach and the official stopped, and we finished the game.  Galva ended up losing after being ahead pretty much the entire game.  The whole thing was just awkward.  I just wanted to get the heck out of there and commence my hour drive home in the dense fog, which took about an extra twenty minutes.

Today is going to be another "ho-hum" day.  While it's been planned for awhile, the school cancellations we have recently had just makes today bad timing.  The guidance department is going to be visiting my English III students today.  This is necessary because students need to register for courses for the 24-25 school year.  It takes time to get all of this course selection done, so that a master schedule can be created.  This is all necessary, so teachers know their teaching assignment and students know their course schedule before the end of the 23-24 school year in the end of May.  I've got some things to accomplish, so I won't be bored.  If all fails, I'll begin another book to read.

I've also started putting a binder together of the 2024 summer vacation plans.  I've got my reservations and maps and other information organized to make sure I've got all the necessary things I need.

Tonight....oh tonight.  We have another girls game, which will be totally opposite of last night's game.  Rock Island at Alleman.  There will be a lot of spectators, the teams will be amped up.  The coaches will be fired up.  There will be a million fouls because that's what happens in the Western Big Six girls basketball games.  Ya, it's going to be great.  The good news is that it's only one game.  That's nice because my foot is still bothering me a little.  We can't get the day done, unless we get it started.  Let's go!

Wednesday, January 24

5:44 a.m. - I'm pretty confident we are headed to school today, and the forecast is encouraging for Thursday and Friday too.  We might actually get in three days in a row of second semester!

Yesterday, my new book about Glacier National Park and my maps arrived, so that was good to see.  I've already started reading it.  We'll be in the Rocky Mountains, and mountain driving scares me, but I'm just going to have to deal with it.  I do have to by a car pass and a park pass, but I have a little time to do that.  And then last evening we did some officiating at Orion.  The teams struggled with turnovers, but that wasn't surprising.  Their practice schedules have really been disrupted in the past two weeks.  I thought our crew did a good job of officiating the game, and it was a good night.  The fog was really bad coming home, so it was nice that it wasn't a long drive home.

Today....oh today.  We have an 11:30 dismissal day, but not because of weather.  This was a planned professional development day.  I think we have a staff meeting and some type of survey to complete, and then we have department collaboration.  I think I'll be scoring assignments.  Later today I head to Galva for a girls game.  I haven't been to Galva in awhile.  I was supposed to go for a boys game on Monday, but that got postponed.  I get to officiate with a couple of guys I've known for a long time but don't work much with, so that will be fun.  The game likely won't be much fun.  I just hope the fog stays away...it will be longer drive tonight.

Tuesday, January 23

7:08 a.m. - And then there were ten.  Today the ice roads again have forced a cancellation of school.  Now between heat, snow, wind chill, and ice; we have had ten total days cancelled.  Ugh.

Yesterday, I finished my book.  Along with that I got in a little exercise downstairs in the basement.  I also updated my lesson plans for the week - only to have to update them again this morning before working on this blog entry.  In addition yesterday, I took a nice little nap with Bella the cat, and I went to bed early last night just because I could because the basketball games I was supposed to work at Galva were postponed.  I didn't really mind because my foot was still bothering me, and the hour drive to Galva by myself for what likely were going to be two blowout games and not very good pay - wasn't something I was really looking forward to.

Today, we are supposed to officiate boys basketball at Orion.  I was looking forward to this one, so I hope the games will still be played.  Other than that, I plan on getting a stretch downstairs.  I may have to get out of the house somehow...maybe Amber and I will go to the casino and grab some lunch.  Sometimes we do that on a snow day if the weather clears in the afternoon.

I was supposed to get my Glacier National Park book delivered yesterday, but that delivery got delayed.  It would be nice to have that now, but I did watch a YouTube video last night, and I'm glad I did.  Apparently, the park is pretty big, which I anticipated.  Also apparently, it's pretty busy during the time we are planning to go, so I'm glad I have now secured all the reservations I need.  Also, according to the video we watched, we need some special passes in order just to drive in the park.  So if that book isn't going to arrive, maybe I'll watch some more videos today.
