Tuesday, August 31

6:25 a.m. - I had my first issue with masks between students yesterday, and I tried to deal with it.  It's going to get harder and harder.  I sent a message to my administrator, and I sent a message to students.  I wish the masks mandate didn't have to be such a dividing issue, but I fear it's going to be that way.  The issue is getting addressed in adults by vaccine mandates in many organizations; of course, very few people want to mandate vaccines in students over a fear of even more conflict.  I don't see a very clear way out of this until the COVID virus subsides.  Yesterday, went fine; today should go fine too.  I'm meeting individually with students for just a few minutes to see their reading skills and ask them a few questions about their plans after high school.  Today, too, I'm taking my check for JayFlight to the bank and paying off that note...tomorrow the trailer will get picked up by the new owner.

Monday, August 30

6:30 a.m. - It's Monday; it's cooler temps; it's a night last night that I didn't sleep well because I was thinking about campers!  It's going to be a busy week at school as I finish up getting to know students and them getting to know me and we start digging into the English III content/curriculum.  Hurricane Ida hit the Gulf Coast yesterday, and it was a doozy.  Kourtney's husband was called down to storm duty, so she's going to need some extra help with baby Rosie and her family while she continues here recovery and adjustment to her bigger family.  I've got three after school work nights this week - a couple of softball nights and one volleyball night.  A little extra cash will be helpful.

Sunday, August 29

6:50 a.m. - Yesterday was good...got some little things done, exercised, and had a chance to visit with Darren and Mom and Dad - including some pool time.  Today is the baptism for the Harrison kids, and then later in the day there are some friends of Mr. Strachan's coming to look at the JayFlight.  I may try to wack some weeds in the swamp area, or it may be another day that's too hot, and I'll push that project to another day.  The weather forecast for this coming week looks warm but not as hot as last week.  That means the afternoons will still be hot, but we'll likely have full days.  I need to figure out some lesson plan stuff later tonight, then.

6:09 p.m. - The baptism went really well, we came home and the couple that came to look at the JayFlight purchased it, and then Jack, Rhonda, Tucker, (and Kourt and Rosie) and my mom went swimming with us and had supper of hamburgers and brats on the grill.  I'd say that was a pretty eventful day.  I didn't exercise today, but I think I'll still sleep pretty well.

Saturday, August 28

6:57 a.m. - Nine years ago yesterday, I had my first "conversation" with Amber that eventually led to our relationship.  Maybe that's what triggered my dream last night.  I was at a different house in the country which was similar to the house that my ex-wife and I had.  I was out by a barn, and Greg and Dalton were playing basketball with Chase, Carmen, and Cole and what apparently was our little outdoor court between the barn and the house.  My ex-wife was talking with me, and I vividly remember asking her what year it was, and she told me 2012.  (Maybe 2012 is in my brain right now because of the year of our camper and the year of our soon-to-be camper.)  When she told me that, I went to my knees and started crying because in my dream I felt like it was so real that I was going back in time to remember what life once was.  I woke up and was a little rattled.  I have those types of dreams every once in awhile, and they seem to always be very strong.  Yesterday I managed to get the yard mowed and the pool cleaned yesterday, so that's good because today's temps are supposed to be very warm.  I'm not sure what I'm doing today.

Friday, August 27th

6:13 a.m. - So teachers and all staff in K-12 education and higher education are required to get vaccinated.  And teachers and staff and students have already been under a mask mandate in the building since the beginning of the school year.  Now the mask mandate in Illinois is everywhere.  Wait, so having masks on only in the school buildings was a bit weird when no one else was required to wear them anywhere else in Illinois?  Basically, the requirement to wear masks and get the vaccine is a bit ironic and "non-news"...ya, been there, done that.  Yesterday was a productive day...got my torque wrench and visited mom and dad at the farm to have dad teach me how to set the settings and just have a nice visit.  I also learned that maybe I have a place to store the Eagle in the off-season.  I also went to the eye doctor to figure out what the heck is going on in order to get a vision check-up, and I think I got that straightened out.  The weather?...yup, hot again today...probably another 1:30 dismissal.  Yesterday, I got textbooks handed out, and chromebooks were distributed (at least to those who were eligible).  I also got students emalis/contacts grouped, and a couple other little "paperwork" things completed.  Today, should be a nice day because we are going to the library to get stories, and the library is air-conditioned.  The Public Speaking course also has a nice little activity in the lesson.  Finally, I also called Mr. Schaffer to let him know that I will be down not this weekend but next weekend to pick up the new camper, and someone is coming to our house on Sunday to look at the JayFlight.  So a lot is happening!  It's been a busy week; I'm looking forward to the weekend.  I forgot to mention, I also rode my bike with the weight vest on, and I did a few laps in the pool too.  This morning, I was encouraged to see the scale lower than it's been in awhile.  I could be just dehydrated, but I know I have done better this week with exercise and meals.

Thursday, August 26

6:25 a.m. - Today may be a mess.  Chromebooks are supposed to be distributed but not all the students maybe be able to receive one.  It's going to be another very hot day. UGH.  Yesterday I made a trip down to Peoria and picked up the hitch I need for my truck in order to pick up the new trailer we are going to purchase.  I also had a good day of exercise - getting a walk in both in the morning and the evening.  I hope to mow the yard this afternoon, but it may be too darn hot.

Wednesday, August 25

5:41 a.m. - The weather is going to provide more rain this morning...too bad because I was going to get the weight vest out and get a ski-walk in.  Getting struck by lightning, though, doesn't seem productive, so I'll wait and try tomorrow.  After the rain passes through, it's going to be a warm one in the building - not sure if it will be a 2:10 dismissal or a 1:30 dismissal, so like the last two days, we'll adjust on the fly as information is released to us.  It's another day of "get to know you" stuff, including class guidelines and expectations which are never fun but needed.  All during the day, though, my mind will be elsewhere.  I've made the decision to purchase a hitch from someone near Peoria.  This hitch will work with my gooseneck ball on my truck and allow me to pull the new camper we are purchasing.  I'm spending more money than I want, but I'm spending less money that purchasing all the equipment new.  So after school I'll pack up and head down that way; hopefully, I can be back home by mid-evening.  I sent Mr. Strachan a message about my thoughts in retrieving the trailer; if he's able, I'm hoping to go get it over Labor Day weekend.

5:57 a.m. - Yes indeed yesterday was eventful.  Completed the second day of school, welcomed grandchild number six to the world - hello Rosalea Kate Southwell!  She's a big girl with long limbs!  Maybe I'll get to meet here sometime later this week.  And then yesterday evening, I officiated my first volleyball match of the season.  It was a little rough, but we got through it.  Today is going to be a warm one....apparently we are still at a 2:10 dismissal, but I wouldn't be surprised if that gets updated to 1:30 dismissal sometime before 6:30 a.m.  I could use a little time to get some extra things done, and I have a chiro appointment today.

Sunday, August 22

6:54 a.m. - And now I'm looking at purchasing a different camper.  Yesterday I shook hands with the owner of a 2021 Jayco Eagle Super Lite 31.5 RLTS.  Now I just have to figure out how to pay for it, get some tires on it, get the right hitch for my truck, and get it home - that sounds simple enough, right?  I'm very comfortable with the purchase, other than it's a little more money than I wanted to spend.  I think, though, it's sort of like the truck and the first camper we purchased - even if the price was a bit out of what I wanted to spend, the price is worth the value of the purchase.  So I could purchase something at a lower cost, but the value wouldn't be as great.  Today, though, I'm headed to church, spending time with family, and then I think spending more time with family.

Saturday, August 21

7:38 a.m. - Wow, yesterday seemed like a long, long day!  I guess that makes sense because we didn't have a full day at all last school year.  And wow did my classroom get hot by the end of the day, especially since it was a full room seventh period.  I did execute a mask break each class period as I was directed, and it was okay.  I just hope this move by the school district helps somewhat quiet all the vocal disgruntled community members (parents).  I do wish there were benches or bleachers or something outside that would allow us to sit down, and I'm thinking that maybe I should go out the back and take the students under the trees by the junior high.  All in all, though, the first day went well.  I actually think I'm going to like first period prep period.  And it's nice to be completely busy by the end of the day because I don't think about food.

Today, I think I'm going to experiment with my new weight vest and go for a bike ride and then a ski walk.   I don't know how much the weight vest is going to help, but the 20-pound weight vest is a reminder to me how much weight I'm putting on my knees with additional weight.  I put the weight vest on, and it's an immediate feedback signal that I need to lose 20 pounds before basketball season begins.  Later, Amber and I are driving down by Lincoln, Illinois to look at a 5th wheel camper that is for sale.  It's out of my price range, but Amber wants to look at it, and I'm okay taking a look a other campers as I learn more and more about fifth wheel units.

Friday, August 20

6:06 a.m. - Well it was the last day of summer, but yesterday I finally pulled off a good day combination of exercise and portion control eating - better late than never I guess.  I want to keep that going through the weekend and see where it gets me.  Today, it's off to school, and it's going to be a hot one.  I almost wish I had a thermometer in my room because 7th period with my room jam packed with 27 students in the heat of the day is going to be a doozy.  I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I have first period free this year, and I'm not sure that I'm going to like that.  Normally, I would use my prep period to get ready for the next day, but that was after I had a handle on what the current day was like.  I guess like anything else I will figure out a system.  I am going to wear my Rockridge Bowling shirt today, so I'll try to stay as cool as possible at least as I meet the new group of students.  Why Rockridge Bowling...because someone was giving them away at school, and I thought it would be a good conversation piece for the first day of school because to my knowledge, there is no bowling team at Rockridge.  A big thing I got accomplished yesterday was getting my volleyball exams completed for Iowa and Illinois, so I think I'm already for any volleyball stuff I need to accomplish except I would like to order new blue and gray shirts.

Thursday, August 19

7:11 a.m. - Back to school again today...but a shorter day again.  Last night Shawn and I went to a volleyball clinic in Sterling...damn thing went 4 hours.  Ugh.  I didn't get home until 10:30, which was ridiculous.  Today I go get my truck, and pay my bill...another ugh.  It will be nice to have a night off, but Brooklyn and Brinley will be coming over, so it won't be a quiet night off.

Wednesday, August 18th - Back to School Day

6:15 a.m. - It's hump day; it's back-to-school day; it's volleyball clinic day.  I think one thing I can say after the summer is that I survived financially, even though my financial health isn't what I would hope it would be.  I wanted a bigger savings nest, but now I need to work on building that back up.  Summer vacation trip went over budget, but we also had some expenses at the beginning of the summer that I didn't expect.  I'm also disappointed with my weight.  I'm too dang heavy.  So a focus this fall on getting back into a better financial health and physical health are in order.

Institute days are now not a lot of fun in my old age and at the same school district for now several years.  Some of the information is important and relevant; some is needed; and some is just downright frustrating.  The frustrating information, of course, is stuff that adds more work and more complications to what I'm trying to accomplish each school year.

Revise IF protocol
1) Break fast with an apple. (water type foods...low in glycemic index)
2) Strength train...activate muscle growth hormone.
3) Cardio train...deplete glycogen to allow for energy burned by fat.

Tuesday, August 17

7:28 a.m. - Yesterday's junior high softball game was what I had expected...long...lots of runs...lots of errors...did I say LONG?  The coaches were great, though, and the fans were great, and the players were giving an effort.  I really don't have anything to complain about...if I was a new umpire just learning, I would have better appreciated the opportunity.  Today's schedule includes a chiro appointment, and another JH softball game.  The weather has been really dry recently, and I'd like to get to that back swamp area and work on that...I won't be able to do it tomorrow, so after the chiro appointment, I may have to do that and see how far I can get.  I think I will work from Brandon's property and go east.  I'm also needing to make a couple of phone calls and pay a VISA bill.  Tomorrow it's back to school.

Monday, August 16

12:59 p.m. - All that is good must end.  I ended June very tired physically and mentally from the covid year of school and officiating/umpiring.  I took July and half of August off.  I'm not all that healed, but I'm working at it.  I'm not all that crazy about returning to school, but first institute day is Wednesday.  I'm not all that crazy about umpiring softball again starting this afternoon, but I'm scheduled, so I will go.  We got back today from a camping weekend at Loud Thunder, and the weather couldn't have been better.  I'm still too fat, and I'm tired today from not very good sleep, but at the campground we had a nice time.  I finished a book, and I started looking at my volleyball officiating materials.  Last night we even had the Harrison girls spend the night, and we survived.  Carmen's first institute day is today, Cole left early this morning to move to Atlanta, and I haven't heard from Chase when I was hoping to this weekend...they are all on their paths, and that's the way it has to be.  So summer is officially over, and that's okay...it was a an exhausting, exhilarating, busy, relaxing, adventure that I hoped it would be.

Friday, August 13

6:38 a.m. - Today is another get-a-way day!  Okay, so I'm not going far...but the campground awaits.  There are still a few things I want to accomplish this morning, but I can't check in to the campsite until later today anyway.  Yesterday was a weird day...weather was weird, and time seemed to slow down.  I exercised (a lot), went to a chiro appt., mowed the yard, cleaned the pool - just got a lot of things done.  Even last night I dipped into volleyball officiating and watched some videos and printed out some study guides.

Revise IF protocol
1) Break fast with an apple. (water type foods...low in glycemic index)
2) Strength train...activate muscle growth hormone.
3) Cardio train...deplete glycogen to allow for energy burned by fat.

Thursday, August 12

6:24 - Yesterday I washed JayFlight, and we pulled a wheel off (with Mr. Strachan's help) to get parts numbers of potential replacement parts of brake assembly and hub parts.  I had a chance to have him walk me through some information about brakes which was ver helpful for me.  Something is wrong, but we decided to get the truck checked out first, find out if there are issues there, and then start working on identifying any problems with the camper brakes.  Since we are taking it to Loud Thunder this weekend, I'll have some more time to mess around with it then.  Today is garbage day, chiro day, and go to bank day., so it's a pretty light day.  We haven't had any rain in a while, so I'm thinking about a yard day too.  I need to spray weeds, and I also need to clean the pool again after yesterday's wind event.  I think when we go camping this weekend I'll take my volleyball stuff with me, as well as my book and do some reading.  I'm looking forward to the spot we have at the new camping area near the horse corral.  While we have been to Loud Thunder before, this particular spot in the campground presents a little different perspective - there is a lot more space than the "parking lot" that is Deer Haven, but there is full hook-ups which is not the case in Indian Meadows.  The negative is that it's a longer trek to the bathhouse as well as the playground.  Tonight is the Field of Dreams MLB game tonight.  I want to watch that.

Wednesday, August 11

5:40 a.m. - Eye Surgeons never called me back.  I'd like to say I'm surprised.  Today and tomorrow are going to be more hot days, but this weekend is supposed to cool down.  I'm thinking a camping weekend may be in order - I'm looking at three nights in Deer Haven at Loud Thunder, but I want to talk with Amber about it.  I could spray for weeds Friday morning and then load up the camper and head to Loud Thunder.  Today, I'm not sure of my schedule.  Amber is going to Brooklyn's first day of school, and I don't think she has much else going.

Tuesday, August 10

6:08 a.m. -  I have a check-up for my eyes today - an annual summer thing.  Then I have a chiro appointment.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do after that.  I could work on volleyball officiating stuff.  I could go for a walk at Black Hawk State Park...that sounds like a winner.  Yesterday, I did take Camren my old chair from school and I went into All-Makes and purchased a new chair for my classroom.  I also got some more chlorine.  I also tried to get my shark fixed, but the guy I normally go to for vacuums doesn't work on sharks. Finally, I balanced my checkbook again...always good to start the day off with that!

11:19 a.m. - One out of two is at 50%, right?  The chiro appointment went fine...I think periodic appointments will help me deal with the arthritis in my right knee.  The eye appointment wasn't so good.  I didn't want all the tests...I just wanted the pressure in my eyes checked.  I was told I'd have to reschedule my appointment...huh?  I don't want all the tests, just the most important one, and I was refused my appointment?  Needless to say, I told the receptionist I may have to find another doctor, and I followed up leaving the office with a phone call into the office manager.  Of course I didn't get the office manager, I got someone who was taking my information to share with the office manager who would call me later.  Needless to say my appointment - or in this case refused appointment - was at 7:30 a.m., and no one has called me back yet.

Monday, August 9

8:25 - Yesterday ended up being a pool day.  I also read some of my book...learning about how the indigenous people of the United States were involved in the Civil War.  This morning I finished the movie Gettysburg, which I had watched prior to our trip and all the podcasts I had listened to and books I had read.  Watching the movie the first time is what motivated me to read about Robert E. Lee and then learning more about the battle before taking our trip.  After watching the movie the second time, I still don't like how Lee was portrayed, and I now better understand how Gettysburg "experts" perhaps aren't all that crazy about the movie.  The movie is a story that uses the Gettysburg event to tell a story...perhaps picking the more potentially glamorous moments (while skipping others) and simply making up more glamorous moments for theatrical effect.  Plus it seems like conversations between characters through the film are like imbedded history lessons but are conversations that likely didn't happen or didn't happen in that fashion.  Today, I'm headed to West Central High School to take Carmen a chair and her books for her classroom library.  I've gotten a few things done here, and will be leaving shortly.

Sunday, August 8

7:08 a.m. - Yesterday, I did a little "stick walking" and then rode my bike.  Today, I think I'm going to switch that and see if there is a different comfort level.  I think today should be pretty quiet...rain is supposed to come in later today, so exercise will happen in the morning, maybe a little reading my book, and maybe a little pool time.  And on a little side note...I got my checkbook balanced - yay!

Saturday, August 7

9:07 a.m. - The Harrison girls and Gigi are gone shopping, the house is quiet, so I have a couple of hours to myself to exercise and get a few things done.  Yesterday I drove to central Wisconsin to look at a 5th wheel, but it wasn't in very good condition.  I don't regret the trip...lots of time to think and a chance to look over a trailer.  The drive wasn't difficult...just had to get around Madison.  I did stop at a casino in Dubuque that I had never been to.  Today should be uneventful, and then tonight Amber and I are joining Jack and Rhonda at Jumers for supper and casino.  I talked to Carmen this morning from an airport in Houston...that was unexpected, and then she told me that she, Chase, Cole, and Sue are scheduled to go skydiving tomorrow.  What the heck?  That's something that I find interesting but terrifying.

Friday, August 6

6:21 a.m. - Yesterday I had x-rays on my knee, and the x-rays revealed what I already knew in my head but really didn't want to see and confirm.  My arthritis has basically created a "bone-on-bone" situation in the inside of my right knee.  I was told that I could order complete knee replacement and decide on the surgery date, but I was also told I would need to give up officiating basketball.  I'm just not ready to do that.  My very next stop was to a new chiropractor in the area, so I decided to see if he could help with a goal of trying to go another five years of officiating and then go with the surgery.  The problem is what it is, and if I can strengthen the muscles around and deal with the pain, then my stubbornness and pride can perhaps help me through.  That's the plan for now.  The plan for today is to drive to Wisconsin to view a 5th wheel for sale.  Actually, I think I'm going to be disappointed with what I see, but along the way, I'll make some stops at RV stores and/or check out some campgrounds and just make it an adventure day.

Did I mention the Delta Variant of COVID 19 has now caused Illinois's governor to make a mask mandate for schools for the upcoming school year?  Ugh.  And now of course, the "loud folks" who likely didn't get the vaccine who have basically contributed to the problem are going to become enraged at having to wear masks.  Sometimes I just want to shake my brain in disbelief.  There was a way out through a comprehensive vaccine effort, and too many people choose to avoid it.  Now the variant has caused a rise in cases, especially in younger people that are unvaccinated.  Here we go again.

I tried to balance my checkbook yesterday, and I'm $36.00 off.  I just looked at it again...I think I may have figured it out.

Thursday, August 5

7:34 a.m. - Back home today...I think I'm experiencing "camping lag". I have an appointment to have my knee checked out; I'm hoping to get some direction on what to do next. If the rain holds off, I may mow the yard after the appointment.

Quick Recap

LEAVE EDGINGTON AROUND 7-8 a.m. Monday, July 26

STOP #1 -- Toledo East/Stoney Ridge KOA July 26 - Trip went fine (Chicagoland driving on I-80 is always interesting), KOA wasn't much, but it was all that we really needed for a stop over.

STOP #2 - Niagara Falls Grand Island Holiday KOA - July 27-30 - The KOA wasn't hard to get to once we figured out how to get around Cleveland and Buffalo without too much traffic. The drive surprised me...only rolling hills and no views of the lake. Niagara Falls was definitely something to see once, but everything to see is really in the state park; the town itself isn't really anything special. On the final day there in the area, we drove up to Lake Ontario to see it. On this day, we had light rain at times, but this was the only day we experienced anything but wonderful weather. One interesting food I tried was "beef on a weck", which is pretty much Italian beef.

STOP #3 - Artillery Ridge Campground - Gettysburg - July 30-Aug. 3 - For me, the campground was perfect, but it was a bit "old school". We had a guided tour, a horseback guided tour, and we drove around ourselves a little. I also rode my bike in a couple of other areas. We ate at a little old time tavern for one meal, and we experienced King's Onion Soup. On our last day we drove south to visit the Antietam battlefield. The drive to this campground from Niagara Falls wasn't much fun - state highway 15 north-south in Pennsylvania is "scenic".

STOP #4 -  Toledo East/Stoney Ridge KOA Aug. 3 - This was by far the worst drive of the trip. We took U.S. 30 east and then interstate northeast and I soon found out that ALL of Pennsylvania is "scenic".

ARRIVE BACK TO EDGINGTON - August 4 sometime in the afternoon - We got an early start and were home by around 2 p.m. ... it was nice to get back to Illinois roads but my last stop to get gas in Atkinson was the most expensive of the whole trip. We returned home to what would soon be a house full of people. The pool and the yard both looked okay, so the return (so far) has been uneventful, which is good!
