Thursday, May 23

5:19 a.m. - Yesterday was long but productive day.  We got through the school day by assigning the last section of the novels for the English III students.  All the journal grades have been entered as well as the exit survey grades.  Now I'm just getting straggling late and make-up grade requests, which I'll get through the rest of the week.  Today, we'll play the movies that correspond to the novels, and students can have time to finish up their assignments.  Yesterday was also the last Free Read Wednesday, so now I'll work to get students to return their library books.  The school year is winding down.

On the diamonds yesterday, the Rockridge baseball team didn't do very well, but it was great to see them advance to the sectional.  The Rockridge softball team won and advanced to the sectional championship.  In my games at Moline, neither game was close.  We are scheduled to have the championship game on Friday, but the forecast isn't looking good for Friday, so my guess is that we will be playing on Saturday.  It will be Bradley-Bourbannais vs. Moline.  The game could be an adventure.  One of my partners is shaky on 3-umpire mechanics; the other partner is really shaky.  They are both good guys, though, so we'll get through it.  In last night's game, I called a United Township runner out for leaving early.  The UT coach wasn't happy with me; the UT fans weren't happy with me.  Neither reaction was surprising.  The really irritating thing is that I told the girl not to leave early and run herself into an out.  The next pitch she did it again, so I called her out.  I tried.  Of course neither the coach nor the fans knew I attempted to manage the game before calling the out, but that's the way it goes.  And you know what?  The next times she was on base, she concentrated harder on not leaving early.

I'm a little bummed that we won't be camping this weekend, but since Friday and Sunday are going to be washout days with storms in the forecast, and it looks like I'm going to be umpiring on Saturday...well, we might as well keep the Eagle parked at home.  Maybe I can have a least one night of camping at home.
