5:58 a.m. - Yesterday the frustration of student absences boiled over in my brain to the point I needed to send a message out to others to see if other teachers had a similar frustration. I had a response from a few, but not really an overwhelming response. I guess I just live with it and collect my paycheck and look forward to the end of the school year.
After school I didn't have softball, so I ran into Moline and picked up some pants I had worked on at Monster Sewing. Then I got home to Karrigan and her three dogs, so I had some "dog time". I was interested in watching all the coverage on the student protest at Columbia University in New York City. The students are protesting the university's support of Israel; suggesting that the university's support is indirectly contributing to Israel's war again Hamas that is affecting the people of Gaza. That whole situation is a mess in itself, but students have been leading protests that then turned unlawful. A group of them broke into a university building and basically took it over. Not left with any additional options, the university called on New York Police to deal with the situation. Fortunately, there was no violence, and I applaud the university's decision and the actions of the NYPD. There effort was effective and didn't seem to incite any violence. I'm all for people expressing their frustrations, but violence, vandalism, and unlawfulness that disrupts others or causes damage is uncalled for.
Today is Wednesday, so I'll once again try to do my small part to encourage students to spend time in their lives outside of school reading for enjoyment. That effort seems futile at times, but I still feel like I need to try. After school, I need to mow the yard. That's not something I usually do during the week, but the recent warm temperatures and sunshine have really caused growth of the grass. And I can do this because I'm once again open from any umpiring of games.
