5:49 a.m. - It was the second game of the night. Peoria High and Dunlap are tied 45-45 with 12.8 seconds left to go in the game. I'm distributed the throw in on the baseline after a timeout with Dunlap with the ball in their backcourt. My partners Brian and Braden come together, and Brian tells us about keeping an eye on the shooter to see if there is a foul because he's got whether or not the last shot will count. In bound is made into Dunlap, and a pass is made and then a player is dribbling down my sideline away from me, and I'm doing a great job of making sure she's in bounds and no foul is occurring. She continues down the the court to the basket and shoots and Braeden calls all foul, and I jog down to switch with him and take the ball, so he can report the foul. I look up to check the clock, and there are 10 seconds on the clock. Huh? I'm quickly thinking in my head there is no way all of that took two seconds, I look at Brian who also is coming into the free throw lane, and he says to me, "I got this." I keep the ball in the free throw lane with all the players and a Dunlap player ready to shoot. Brian goes over to the table to talk with Braeden about the timing problem - the timekeeper started the clock late. After a discussion between Brian and Braeden and the timekeeper, it's determined that there are 3.7 seconds left to go in the game. It seems reasonable, but the Peoria High coach and the timekeeper are now arguing with each other. Meanwhile, apparently the Peoria High spectators are losing their minds, but I honestly didn't hear any of that. I just and waiting with the players with the free throw shooter. Finally, we get back to the game, and the Dunlap player makes both free throws. With no timeouts, Peoria attempts to inbound the ball, but Dunlap steals it, and Peoria makes no attempt to foul, and the clock runs out. The game is over, and we exit a door in the corner of the gym and get the heck out of there.
Before that final 12.8 seconds of that second game, the day had gone pretty smoothly. The school day had gone well and quickly. The first game of the night had gone well, since Lincoln is awesome and they destroyed Geneseo by 50 points. Even the game between Peoria and Dunlap had gone well despite being sloppy. And then the timekeeper forgot to start the clock - whoops.
We talked about it after the game. The timekeeper actually came up to where we were getting dressed and apologized for the error. We discussed what we could have done differently. And out of the goodness of their hearts, the Geneseo staff waited for us in the hospitality room to get a sandwich after the game. I'm not waking up to any emails from the IHSA or Peoria coaching staff, so I guess so far, the morning is starting off good.
My foot was killing me the entire night, so I didn't have any problems with nerves. I was tired and my foot hurt too much to be nervous. I sure wish I could get the pain in my arch to give up and go away, but I'll probably need to spend some time off of it to allow that to happen. That should be the last two-game night of the season, though, so that will help.
Today should be another good day. We'll have a journal write and continue to work on those study questions from yesterday. I've got one game tonight at Kewanee which isn't going to be easy. Kewanee and Princeton boys won't be an easy match-up, but we're at the point of the season, where it is what it is. Almost like last night, I'm too tired and the season is winding down too close for me to be to worked up about any one particular game.
