Thursday, February 15

6:02 a.m. - To make a long and excruciating story short, Tuesday night at Kewanee while officiating a varsity boys game, I must have planted my right foot just right or landed on it just right to get a "snap" out of it.  I took two steps toward midcourt and knew I was in trouble because putting even a little weight on the foot trying to run was sending shooting pain up my leg.  I went to Kewanee's site manager and told him to get on the phone and get an official here if possible because I wasn't going to make it.  Fortunately, one of the officials that had worked the sophomore game had stayed and was watching the varsity game.  He got dressed again, had a conversation with my two partners, and out they went for the second half while I got dressed and limped out of the gym to my car.  I was pretty confident I hadn't sprained anything; I was pretty confident a bone or bones had broken.  It was a long drive home just thinking about what I was going to have to go through in the upcoming days.  I called Amber, and she was the only one I told.  I didn't think it was necessary to go to the ER that night; I would just wait until the next day, so I called my building principal and asked for a substitute for Wednesday.  I may have only got an hour of sleep that night, and it wasn't the pain in the foot...it was the pain in my heart.  That Tuesday morning I had received the postseason assignment I had been dreaming of for the past three years - I was going to get a 4A girls sectional in Normal.  I was going to get the opportunity to get in the pipeline for being selected to work the state tournament.  That morning I was so excited I barely was able to contain myself.  Laying in bed with what I knew was a season ending injury I again could barely contain myself - just the opposite direction.

So yesterday I got myself up, went to the ORA walk-in clinic, they took xrays, determined I have a stress fracture in my foot, and there goes the remaining six post-season games on my basketball officiating schedule for the 23-24 season.  All that work since November, the rules meeting, the test, the games, the travel plans, getting through partner issues, ALL GONE...OVER...STOPPED.  I sent a message to the IHSA to have me removed, I sent a message to my partners, I cleared all the games off my calendar, and I felt miserable.  And now I have to watch and hear everybody else get their postseason games, get their rewards for all of their work, learn about their excitement.  I feel cheated, left out, and drained of excitement.  And I know the vast amount of people would think I'm being such a baby about this.  It's only one postseason, there will be more.  I did get to officiate most of the season, right?  And I should be happy for all my officiating friends, right?  I'm going to try.

So it's off to school today...in a freaking boot to try to immobilize my foot.  I'm supposed to do no running for two weeks and then return for a reevaluation.  This is going to suck.
