Sunday, February 4

8:37 a.m. - Yesterday was a long day.  The games at Orion were horrendous.  I just don't understand why some girls basketball players feel the need to fall down intentionally in order to perhaps draw a foul or gain sympathy or just to seem like they are giving an effort.  I don't get it, but I do know that they hurt themselves and others.  In one situation, the Orion girl literally gave herself a concussion.  In the other situation, a different girl took out two of her opponents by falling down which resulted in me calling a travel.  Stay on your feet girls!  After that show, I traveled to Aledo to work the third-fourth place game of the Lincoln Trail Conference Boys Tournament.  The game went fine up until the final .6 seconds of the game - .6!  Annawan's best player is shooting his second free throw, while Annawan is up 3.  The shot looks good...I'm not really paying attention because I'm tired and for all practical purposes, the game is over.  The player goes running into the lane before the ball gets to the rim.  Before I even process what happens, Wethersfield gets the ball, passes it in, time runs off, and the game is over.  What the hell just happened?  Well, the Wethersfield coach saw what happened, and he yelled at me - deservedly so.  That was a lesson for me...the game isn't over, until it's over.  I talked to the Annawan coach after the game, and he even said "it was bad."  Geez, Louise, give me a break.  Stay at the free throw line, make the shot to go up four, and don't cause me grief with .6 seconds left!

Today I'm hoping for a quiet day.  I need to get a few things done, but all are reasonable and doable and still can encompass a quiet day.  I need to go to the bank and deposit some officiating checks; I need to get a haircut; I need to pick up some things at the grocery store; I need to finish my book; I need to visit mom and dad and get some hay down for the horses; I need to clean my car and get my officiating clothes back in; and I may change the water in the hot tub.  And I'd like to do all of that and get back to watch Illinois basketball at 5:30 p.m.  That's not really a bad day if I can pull it off.
