Friday, February 2

5:38 a.m. -  Today is Friday.  It's been the first full week of school/work in the second semester.  We made it. Last night's games went fine, and both were running clock, so Tony and I ate some ribs at Papa's in Monmouth last night.  Yesterday's school day also went fine - the guidance department gals came in and took all the students through the registration process for their senior year, and I got all my paperwork handed back to students.

Today should be a quiet, simple Friday.  Students are going to complete a vocab quiz and then start working on analysis questions over the recent short story we started.  Let's get to the weekend.

I did get a request to attend a special education meeting on a student next week.  The thing is that the student doesn't have any academic obstacles keeping him from doing well.  He just doesn't want to do it.  His world revolves around him.  If it's not pleasing to him, he's not going to do it.  Until there is something in his life that is more of a priority that his fun and enjoyment, he's not going to perform well in school.  Most students in school don't really want to go to school, but they do because they see their education as a means to achieving other things they want to get out of life.  So they do the schoolwork that may not be all that interesting.  Athletes are the same way...most athletes don't want to run sprints or go to practice, but they see and understand that those things are a means to achieving success or wins or goals or whatever.

I think it's the same thing for potential problems in life.  We try to avoid potential things because we see avoiding bad things as a means to maintaining a happier life and achieving things we may want - a satisfying job, a comfortable home, vacations, etc...

As ironic as it sounds, most of us normally don't achieve something unless we have a reason or reasons to complete "the stuff" it takes to eventually get to the goal.  We have to put someone or something else first above "fun and easy".  I don't think that student gets it, or perhaps the student just refuses to understand that.  Somehow or some way, most people need to understand that work and effort and completion of tasks that may not be "fun" will eventually lead to accomplishment, satisfaction, and fun.
