5:48 a.m. - Last night was a good, good night. As a "crew chief" that I never wanted to be, I make painstaking efforts to try to get the members of my basketball officiating crew as many ratings, as many Top 15 lists, and as high of powerpoints as I can possibly get them. I know what it's like to be in a postseason championship game, and I want the other members of my crew to experience that thrill. Well, last night the girls postseason assignments finally came out and Tony, Marcus, and Shawn ALL got regional assignments that included working in their respective championship games. In addition, my friends Braeden and Randy also got similar assignments. Braeden and I are going to Geneseo 3A, Tony and Marcus are going to Moline 4A, Shawn is going to Princeville 1A, and Randy is going to Galesburg 3A. It's just wonderful that all of those folks are being rewarded for the grind of working all season long trying to do their best. I know it seems a little "geeky" to other folks, but it's AMAZING for me. It's like when I coached, and I wanted my players to experience the thrill of postseason championships - there just is nothing like it for the people like me that love sports and love basketball. The thrill of victory and the gut wrenching agony of defeat along with the extra noisy crowds...it's just the best environment to be in. We were just ready to take the floor at Wethersfield when Tad sent me a text telling me the assignments had been posted. And then there was a flurry of texts from my officiating friends attempting to find out where everyone was going. It's like a bunch of little kids contacting each other to find out what they got for Christmas. My assignment at Geneseo puts me with one of the best girls teams in the country in Lincoln. They are undefeated and are a favorite to win the 3A state championship. It will be fun to see them play. I figured I would go there, Moline, or Galesburg, and Geneseo was the place I was most interested just because Lincoln would be there.
The rest of the day at school went fine. Today we are going to have our first socratic seminar of the semester. I'm a little worried about the regular English III groups, but I hope it works out. First period is really quiet, second period has some goofballs, and fifth period has several quiet students. We'll just see how it all works out. I know it's good for them to participate in something like this, so it's up to them to do the work. I've prepared them the best I can.
Tonight, Shawn, Marcus, and I are headed to Rock Island for a girls game between Rock Island and Sterling. It's an important night because Shawn and Marcus haven't had a game in awhile, and they need a game.
