Thursday, February 29

6:12 a.m. - It's Thursday, it's leap day, it's no school for Jay day!  I'm headed to a follow-up appointment for the bad wheel.  I do plan on coming home and doing some schoolwork, though. I want to make sure the students are making progress on their essays that were pushed out Tuesday and discussed in class yesterday.  Depending on the results of today's consultation with the foot doctor, I may get in a hike at Blackhawk State Park on the way home in order to get in some exercise.  I also want to watch the IHSA girls state finals, but the first game is at 9:30 a.m., so I may be a little late getting back for that one.

Last night Macomb upset Peoria Manual, so now Rockridge plays Macomb tomorrow night for a chance to advance to the supersectional round in Springfield next week.  These two teams already met once this year and Rockridge one in a close game.  I think Mr. Bush is planning on going, so I will probably ride with him to the game.

Yesterday at school, the day went well.  We had a few groups complete their presentations, and we also had a learning lab.  This was actually the first learning lab of the semester that students were assigned to see teachers of classes they were failing.  I have several failing students, which is ridiculous.  And even more ridiculous is that they don't really seem to care.  It's frustrating, but I just do my job like I'm supposed to, and the rest is up to them.

I'm really hoping from good news from today's appointment, and I'm really hoping to be productive today while also watching a lot of basketball at the girls state tournament and taking notes about hopefully potentially working those state finals some day.

Wednesday, February 28

5:50 a.m. - Geez...winter came back.  Yesterday after school I went for a walk at Loud Thunder, and it was near 80 degrees; this morning it's a feel like temperature of zero.  There were tornadoes reported east of us last night as this cold front rolled through.  After getting back from my walk, I made some supper and then watched Rockridge boys basketball win a sectional semifinal agains Peoria Notre Dame.  My supper was awesome.  Kraig McPeek gave me six farm fresh eggs last Saturday, and I finally had a chance to fry some up.  A little bacon, some toast....that's good stuff.

Yesterday at school went as planned.  We got some more presentations completed, and we pushed out the upcoming essay assignment.  There was too much down time for the day, but the students didn't drive me completely crazy.

Today should be okay.  Dress warm for this cold day, and then get through a Free Read Wednesday.  And then...let's call it a weekend.

Tuesday, February 27

5:35 a.m. - Yesterday went about I had expected.  The "advanced" students really worked at trying to be creative with their presentations, and the "regular" students really tried to do the least possible.  I'm not saying that advanced students tend to be a little stronger academically, but academic strength isn't really what separates the two groups.  Instead, positive effort towards a task seems to be the main difference.

After school was over, I came home.  We were supposed to have some grandchildren visitors, but apparently one of the grandchildren wasn't feeling well, so we had a quiet evening.  I did watch some of the girls basketball supersectional games.  I was mostly watching the officiating, but I also watched some of the games that were in action.  The only local team that was playing was Alleman, and they got beat by Peoria Notre Dame.  At least if a private Catholic team had to win, they beat out another private Catholic team.

Today, should be okay.  Yesterday, a lot of the presentation work that needed to be completed was done.  Of course, there are always "stragglers" and students that were "absent" for one reason or another.  Tonight, Rockridge boys play their sectional basketball game in Canton.  They play Peoria Notre Dame, and they are going to have their hands full.  Notre Dame has a losing record, but they play a pretty demanding schedule.

Monday, February 26

6:07 a.m. - Yesterday was pretty quiet after Kenzie picked up Brooklyn, Brinley, and Luke.  I took Sophie for a little walk, and the foot didn't feel terrible.  I'm still lacking flexibility, and it's still sore where I think the fracture took place, but I'm not experiencing any shooting pain, so I know it's continuing to heal and get stronger.  I also got a little workout in downstairs, which was good.  I then watched some television and after the NASCAR race, I went to the farm and visited mom and dad.  Getting the hay down out of the loft was a bit of a challenge, but I just took it slow and managed okay.

Today may be the most challenging day of the week, and it's Monday, so I guess that's okay.  Students are scheduled to make presentations today.  Many of them either won't be ready, or they will not have practiced enough to be effective.  I will be the "bad guy", then, when the scores are low.  I don't enjoy being the bad guy; unfortunately, it's part of the job.

Tonight?  Well, I honestly don't know about tonight yet, but the weather is supposed to be warm again.  It was weird last night; felt like I should have had a campfire going.  Apparently according to the weather forecast the temps are supposed to be good today and tomorrow and then nosedive on Wednesday before gradually warming up again.  The weekend is actually looking pretty good.

Sunday, February 25

8:51 a.m. - Gigi took the Harrison kids to Sunday School, so I have a window of time to try to accomplish a few things.  Yesterday, I went to the softball rules meeting in Macomb.  I rode with Kraig McPeek and Tony Holtschlag, and it was nice to be out among fellow officials since I've been on the sideline since February 14th.  There is a new rule this year that I think is going to be more problematic than people realize, but I hope I'm wrong.  It's a little complicated to explain, but it has to do with pitching rules.

After coming home from the clinic, I watched some basketball.  Thank goodness Illinois beat Iowa.  And then we took the Harrison grandchildren to see Kraig's goat farm.  We had some fun with that.  Brooklyn and Brinley got to hold some goats; Luke warmed up to them eventually.  So last night was not a great sleep night with Luke as my roommate, but we got through it.  I think the will be leaving here sometime after lunch, so maybe I can get some things done after that.  I'd really like to see if I can go for a walk.  The weather is sunny and temps aren't bad, so I'd just like to see if I can get out and walk for a little bit of distance without discomfort.  Maybe later I can go see mom and dad at the farm and go for a visit too.

Saturday, February 24

5:48 a.m. - Rockridge boys basketball almost got beat last night.  Mercer County pushed them to overtime, but then Rockridge edged them out.  It's a tough morning for the Golden Eagles; I remember what those mornings were like.  And now Rockridge gets Peoria Notre Dame in the Canton Sectional.  The winner of that gets Macomb vs. Peoria Manual winner.  Most of my officiating friends are now done with basketball; I think Tad still has a boys sectional game next week.  So for the most part my "feeling left out" of the 23-24 postseason basketball assignments is over.  In fact, today I'm heading to Macomb for a softball rules meeting.

I did order some new shoes yesterday in wide sizes, and they weren't cheap.  I hope the wider shoes assist in my recovery.  I purchased a pair to try for softball umpiring, and I purchased a pair to try for court shoes on a basketball court.

Yesterday went okay; there were many students absent.  And the students that weren't absent didn't seem very engaged in the day.  I fear the presentations that begin Monday will not be strong, but at least I tried.  I did get lesson plans completed yesterday for all of next week, so that's good.

We had granddog Sophie at our house last night for a sleepover.  Later today, apparently the Harrison grandchildren will be spending the night.  Sometimes the weekends are busier than the work weeks.

I haven't heard from Cole in awhile.  I guess he's still mad at me.  Maybe I'll try to give him a call tomorrow sometime.

Friday, February 23

5:53 a.m. - I got through yesterday.  That was going to be the rough one.  That was supposed to be the day I officiated in my first sectional championship game at Normal West High School.  I watched some of it on television until the NFHS feed wouldn't work anymore.  I also watched another official I know work at East Peoria.  I don't know that I learned anything new, but I'm reminded of what it's like to work with unfamiliar partners in a game like that.  Yesterday at school went fine.  I was productive, and I feel like I've given students ample opportunity to collaborate and work on their presentations which start Monday.  After a journal write activity today, they'll have a little more time.

Last night the Southwell grandchildren spent the night.  I hadn't seen Tucker and Rosie in awhile, so it was good to see them.  They sure do grow up fast.  Rosie likes to read books, so we read some books.  Tucker likes to play with his toy guns, so we did that too.

Oh, I did try to go for a walk yesterday because the temperatures outside were unusually warm.  I didn't get far on my walk.  There was discomfort on the side of my foot, and I even tried a couple of different pair of shoes.  Maybe I should have just stayed in my cowboy boots for my walk.  I have the most comfort in the cowboy boots.  Despite not being able to go on a long walk, the foot still is getting stronger and stronger every day, which is good news.  I still have a couple of weeks until my first softball game, but I'd like to start running before then just to be able to strengthen it a bit more.

Tonight is championship night for boys basketball.  I should be working tonight too at ROWVA, but watching tonight's action won't be as difficult as last night's.  And I never really knew whether or not I would get a boys sectional game (next week), so I didn't even get the chance to feel anything about that.  I'll watch Rockridge boys play tonight on NFHS television - should be an interesting game between Mercer County and Rockridge.  I think Mercer County is overall the better basketball team, but Rockridge has the experience and mental edge of being in a regional championship game like this.  Lots of times the mental edge makes the difference.

Thursday, February 22

5:55 a.m. - Watching everyone else officiate last night on television while I was at home with an ice bag on my foot - well, it wasn't much fun.  I did it, though, to see if there was something I could learn.  Jason and Robbie had a close game; everyone else had games that weren't real close.  I did manage to also watch Illinois blow a big lead last night versus Penn State.  So I guess you could say all of my basketball viewing last night was painful.  Well, I guess not all of it.  Rockridge did win its game against Monmouth-Roseville.

The school day went fine.  I got a lot of work done, and most students have selected a spiritual for their projects.  I did have a conversation with Mrs. Graves about the excessive number of students that are currently failing English III.  Each semester I have a couple of students who don't seem to care - just seem to show up for something to do around friends and maybe get breakfast and lunch.  This year, though, is odd.  I have four or five that are in that category, and there are four or five more that are failing as well, even though they just may be a kick in the pants to get them going.  It's puzzling to me how students lose or perhaps never gain a perspective of how their current actions may or will affect their futures.  It's like they just live to survive the day with as much enjoyment as possible and as little work as possible.  If there is recognition that they really are hurting their futures, they don't show it.  They just passively go through the motions, participate only in the simple, little easy tasks, bypass any tasks that require time and effort outside the classroom or extra energy in the classroom, take their failing grades quietly without any visible sense of urgency or regret, and move on to the next day.  It's frustrating that I nor the course can be more motivating for them, but I feel like I provide enough variety and opportunity that all students can pass the course with just minimum effort.  For some students, though, minimum effort just seems like too much to ask.

Today should go okay.  It's "America" day, so I think I'll go with blue pants, a white shirt, and a red, white, and blue tie.  And then tonight is the tough day to get through.  Tonight I'll watch that Sectional Championship at Normal West that I should be at - the game that would have put me in the pipeline to eventually get to the state finals.  That's the game that will be tough to watch, but I'm going to watch and try to use the viewing as preparation and motivation to make it back to better health and fitness and hopefully get a similar assignment next season.  Tonight I think the Southwell grandchildren are spending the night.  I haven't seen them in awhile, so it will be nice to see them.

Wednesday, February 21

5;22 a.m. - Amber is back.  I picked her up last night about 9 p.m. from the airport, and she seemed to have a good trip even though the temps weren't as warm as she would like.  And she wasn't in Florida; she was in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  Last night I got a phone call from Chase; it was so nice to hear his voice.  We didn't really talk that long, and we didn't talk about anything earth-shattering, but he seemed in good spirits.  Plus, he seemed to think he would be released fairly soon - perhaps this week.  I'm just going to keep continuing to hope and have faith that good will occur next.  Last night I also watched various girls sectional basketball games around the state.  I tried to watch the one I was supposed to be officiating at, but the signal wasn't good through the NFHS Network.  And I guess I didn't realize that not all schools were going to show their games on the streaming platform; I'm wondering how that works now.  Tonight Rockridge boys play at Monmouth-Roseville, and as far as I know the game will be on the network.  Yesterday, at school we had a good day.  I got the lesson plan done that I needed to get done; I feel good about that change I made to the lesson plan, and I have my lesson plans complete for the rest of this week.  I feel like I'm skipping around a lot in this entry, but last night as I was watching other basketball officials working sectional games, it became clear that my age and physical stature and even my limp because of my knee really are not deal breakers.  It seemed like just about every official was my age, many appeared heavier than I do, and at least a few were not very fast with something noticeably hurting.  I just need to get lighter...be lighter today than I was yesterday.

Tuesday, February 20

5:36 a.m. - The start of the work week is always nicer when it's a Tuesday instead of a Monday.  Yesterday went pretty well, even though I didn't get much exercise.  Carmen visited in the morning, and we talked for a couple of hours before she went to meet Sue in Rock Island to do some shopping.  Carmen definitely is looking pregnant now, and she's feeling okay, and I am just glad everything seems to be going well.  She seems to continue to really like her job with the Lee County Economic Development Group, and we talked about how she's learning just how difficult it is to get groups of people to work together.  I hadn't seen her for awhile, so it was just nice to have a conversation and a couple of hugs and see how she's doing.

Prior to that, I did some revising on my lesson plans for the week, and I now have them how I want them.  I just needed to switch some things around and get the students going on that presentation project sooner.  I need to have those presentations before the end of the month when I'm going to be gone a couple of days due to a dentist appointment and the follow-up to the foot.  Speaking of the foot, it's still feeling stronger all the time, but yesterday morning I turned the foot just right, or in this case just wrong, and the pain about buckled me.  It's a good thing only Bella was home, or anyone in the house would have heard me shout out.  I'm not exactly sure where that fracture is at, but it's in there somewhere.  I still won't be doing any running or sharp cuts for awhile.  It doesn't really help that the inside of my knee has arthritis build up and the outside of my foot has a fracture in it...the two problem are sort of working against each other.

Amber comes back home tonight.  After school, I'm going to work to tidy up the house, but it's really in pretty good shape.  I have to pick her up at the airport around 9 p.m., and that will give me some time to watch another round of postseason basketball games I was supposed to be working tonight - the Normal West Sectional.  Amber seemed to have some time on the beach yesterday, but she said it's still unusually cold.

Yesterday afternoon I went into Milan and picked up more stamps, as my supply was running low.  Then I went to the casino to get a new player's card because I had left mine in a machine the day before.  Then I went to mom and dad's and watched the Daytona 500 with them.  We watched through stage two, and then I came home to watch the boys regional game I was supposed to work, along with a couple other games that I had some connections.  The Daytona 500 ended with an "outlier" winning after "the big one" crash took out 18 cars with only eight laps left.  That's about how it goes with that race.  My dad is a big fan of NASCAR, so it was good to sit with them and just be with them while he watched something he enjoyed.  I had plenty of friends in their dogs and cats too.

Today should be pretty smooth...get through the school day.  It's FFA week this week, so things will be a little wacky, but that's okay.  It's John Deere vs. Case IH day today...I'll have to see what I can do for that.  I think I have a sweatshirt I can wear.  Then after school I will get home and tidy the house up.  Then I'll watch some high school basketball.  Then I'll pick up Amber at the airport.  Hopefully we'll be back home and to sleep by 10 p.m.  I know Amber will be tired from her flights.  I think she goes to Dallas first and then into the Quad Cities.
