7:18 a.m. - My goal is schoolwork today; that's the work part.  I also need to shovel the driveway again, but I think the most work is behind me since I cleared it twice yesterday as the snow was falling.  The snowstorm was a good old-fashioned all day Midwest event.  I'm pretty sure if we were supposed to be in school today that we'd have a snow day.  Yesterday, we ventured over to Rhonda and Jack's for a little while in the morning before the roads got too bad, and then we came home, and I watched football.  My Irish lost, but the Hawks lost too.  There were actually some really good games, so it was a good day to be lazy.  

Today I think we'll head down to the casino to get out of the house and take a break from grading papers.  There's a brunch buffet going on, so we'll probably head to that.  Maybe I'll try to head to my parents' house to see how they are doing and if they need some help digging out. 

One thing good about the start of the new year is that my checkbook is balanced, and I don't have a balance on my credit card.  It's always a positive thing to have no credit card debt after the holidays!

I'm a bit worried about Omicron, which I don't think is actually here yet in the Quad Cities area.  Our hospitals are full now, but our variant is still Delta.  Omicron is supposed to spread more quickly, but according to news reports it mostly stays in the throat and sinuses as a kind of head cold instead of advancing to the lungs and causing pneumonia.  Since that's the early data, it seems that hospitalizations and deaths won't be as bad, but people will just be sick.  I'm worried how this situation will affect return to school and if we will have a suspension of sports.
