7:44 a.m. - So my last game of officiating for 2021 was Thursday at Erie. I had wanted to visit Carmen in Burlington for an overnight, and I wanted to make sure to see Cole before he drove back to Georgia. And early in the morning as I was headed to Lanark for my first game on Thursday, I feared I wasn't going to be able to accomplish either, but a few phone calls and a little creative thinking, and I was able to accomplish everything I wanted. After my game at Erie, I drove directly to Burlington to visit with Carmen. That night we went to Culver's for supper, did a little shopping at WalMart, and watched a movie that was really good and was a Christmas movie too! Then the next morning (yesterday morning) we drove to Fort Madison to see her boyfriend's place in Fort Madison, as well as her church. Tyler is Carmen's boyfriend, and he is talented with carpentry and remodeling. He purchased a fixer-upper in Fort Madison, and he's remodeling it. I wish I was that talented and had the skills and desire to do that sort of thing. He's also used his talents with the church that he and Carmen belong too. When I was visiting Carmen, I noticed her car seemed to smell like it was burning oil, and we discovered that her oil filler cap really wasn't the right one. It was loose, and I think there was oil spraying out of the filler cap area. So we drove to an auto parts store and picked up something else that is a better fit. I hope that was the only problem. I drove back home yesterday, then, and got home around 1:00 p.m. and proceeded to get a few things done around the house - filled the bird feeder, started my officiating clothes in the wash, filled the cat food box, etc... After Amber got home, we started the process of putting away our Christmas decorations, which was bittersweet. I wanted to get the outside lights down prior to today's winter storm, and I know Amber would want to get the indoor decorations down this weekend. It never takes as long to put decorations away, so I'd say we got it all done in about an hour. It's sad to think the holiday season is over, but we still have a few days of break from school, so that's good. Later in the afternoon Cole visited, which was also sad. I gave him his gift that didn't arrive for Christmas, and then we watched some football togethers. I think he's waiting to go until the snowstorm clears, but I'm sure going to miss him again as he travels back to Georgia to continue to pursue his dreams of acting. He's heart and mind are set on it, but I sure wish he was closer to home. Last night did not feature me watching the ball drop. In fact, I was in bed by about 9:30, and that was okay with me. After a long and busy week, a little early bedtime worked just fine, even if it was New Year's Eve.
So now today is going to be spent indoors - weather forecast is calling for 4-8 inches of snow and the wind is already picking up with a light snowfall starting to take hold. I need to get some schoolwork done; I need to get some exercise done; I need to watch a lot of football; and at some point I'll need to shovel the driveway. Oh, and I need to write some bills and get to the mailbox.
2021 recap of what I can remember....
- We purchased a new 5th wheel camper after taking the first camper on a trip to Niagara Falls and Gettysburg.
- I officiated and umpired a lot beginning in January when Illinois returned to sports.
- My new basketball crew started this basketball season in November, and I really like how it's going so far.
- Cole went to Georgia, Carmen took a new job at West Central High School and is living in Burlington, and now has a serious boyfriend; and Chase had another struggle with substance abuse but is now doing better.
- COVID seemed to be fading, and as of today is now resurging with the Delta variant and now the Omicron variant despite vaccine availability. I've been vaccinated and have had a booster, but too many people are resisting vaccinations.
- Teaching is EXTREMELY challenging - the year of 2021 was probably the most challenging I've ever had since the early days of being a "newbie". I'm ready to retire.
- Last summer in softball, I worked a Supersectional, and I'm thinking that this season I have a chance to work my first state tournament.
- We had more grandchildren! We are now up to six, and so far, all are doing very well.
I think those items are a pretty good recap of the big things...now on to a snowy start to 2022.
