Saturday,, August 2

7:21 a.m. - This entry comes from Site 35 at Deer Haven Campground in Loud Thunder Forest Preserve.  And what a wonderful stretch of cool temps we are having!

Let's recap.

Thursday - The day went as well as I had hoped.  New tires were put on the Eagle at Discount Tire in Davenport, and that went quick enough that I was then able to take the trailer to Loud Thunder.  After a complete setup, I went home and got the yard mowed.  After that I went back to the campground to deliver bicycles, and then it was back to Reynolds for Grandma Rhonda's birthday.  The Harrison grandchildren arrived and spent the night.

Yesterday - We had a busy day with the grandkids...bike riding, a little walk down to the "troll bridge", playground time, and a new record - started the campfire around 12:15 p.m., so we could make s'mores after lunch.  Then later in the afternoon when Darrin picked up the kids, my brother arrived, and we had a nice visit withe the campfire.

Today?  I just need to get more firewood, and I'll probably pick up some more water.  Otherwise, I'll be trying to have a quiet day at the campground.  Later we are expecting guests, so it will be burgers and hot dogs.  This morning, though, I'm making some breakfast!

8:32 a.m. UPDATE - Amber just headed home to get some work done, and we had bacon, egg, cheese muffin breakfast sandwiches for breakfast - yum.  I had dessert in the form of one of those peaches from the purchase on Thursday afternoon...yum again!  So now all is quiet at the campground...well, the dehumidifier is running, and I'm typing away on the Chromebook, but all else is quiet.  These are the moments to cherish - quiet and simple.  As mentioned previously the weather was/is VERY HELPFUL!  This weekend feels like fall camping!  And now my schedule includes a trip to the shower house and a drive down to Dollar General in Andalusia and then up to Shawn's shot to get some firewood.  And then it's back to the campground and possibly a hike...maybe a nap...maybe both!  I did finish reading my book - the biography on Robert E. Lee.  I had read it before, but he interested me.  He's pretty much a full fledged hero in the South, and he seems to get a lot of credit for being a soldier genius, but I think his fame in the South is more connected with the reality that he represented the traditional Southern plantation owner gentleman.  He did go to West Point and did rise to the level of General in the Confederate Army, but it seems to me that he was more of an engineer and Southern gentleman than he ever was a military genius.  And maybe I'm mistaken and misunderstanding the information I'm reading, or maybe there is more information I need to know, but I think his place in history is smaller that perhaps what it should be.  He represented the South - I'm not sure I would call him a villain, but his views of other people are disturbing to read.  He believed white adult educated wealthy males should run the world.  And while he may have expressed views from time-to-time that seemed like compassion and caring, those views were from a self imposed pedestal.  He cared for others in ways that he felt were the honorable things to do because of his perceived belief that he was genuinely better than everyone else.  He felt that it was his role ... perhaps his calling or destiny.  I think it's one thing to care and respect others because of a feeling that we are all in this thing called life together and we all deserve care and respect.  It's another thing to care and respect other because of a notion that all others are "less" than us and "need" our care and respect to survive and develop.  And I don't think Lee's philosophy was born in malice or evil...he just was born and raised in that environment - everyone else needs white, male, educated, wealthy gentleman to have a happy life.  He would claim at times that he felt black people would eventually develop, but he didn't seem to think he would have a role in that endeavor.  It's interesting too that in the biography there was no mention of Native Americans even though he did express similar "arrogance" over Mexicans.  I think a part of me can judge Lee as honorable; but another part of me is saddened.  And yet we live in a world event today where white, educated, wealthy male "gentlemen" think they are the only people in the world that can and should lead...that's disappointing.
