5:53 a.m. - I survived my birthday yesterday, but it was a busy day. We got up early to visit Mackinaw Island, which meant loading my bicycle and getting to Shepler's Ferry in St. Ignace. The ferry ride was interesting - my first ever ferry ride. Because we were the first trip of the morning, we were accompanied by a lot of construction workers who were starting their work day. When arriving on the island, Amber rented a bicycle, and we were off on our 8-mile bike ride around the island. It was pretty much a flat ride, but we did walk the 200+ stairs to see arch rock. Then after getting back and parking our bikes in the bike public parking area, we walked up to The Grand Hotel. We saw the world's longest porch and the interior of the hotel lobby for the hotel that has a nightly stay cost of around $1,000 during peak season. Mackinac Island allows no motorized vehicles, so it's like another world - horses and bicycles are the means of transportation. So as we were riding our bicycles, we navigated through other bicycles and horse carts transporting people, luggage, and supplies We actually saw a UPS cargo container on a boat going back to Mackinaw City. So the supplies for the island are ferried over to the island, off loaded, then the flatbed horse drawn carts deliver the supplies to the various spots that ordered them. It did appear that some people were allowed to use e-bikes, but I'm not sure what their positions were. After The Grand Hotel, we had lunch at The Pink Pony, and both Amber and I had white fish sandwiches, which were very good. Amber then did a little shopping but didn't buy much, and then after returning her bicycle, we got back on the ferry and headed back to St. Ignace. We were gassed, so we took a little rest in the camper before planning our next adventure. In the afternoon, we found a beach in St. Ignace and I put my ankles and knees in Lake Huron - the beach was rocks, so it was hard to walk, but the cold great lake water felt great on my legs. We didn't stay long, so on the way home we picked up a couple of pasties, which are a food item here in the area that are like what I would call a pot pie. After getting back to the camper, we had supper and then I closed out the night reading my book by our campfire. After so many things yesterday, my legs are tired today. And my diet yesterday? Well, let's just say that I didn't follow it yesterday. I hope all the exercise on the island help equal out all the calories I consumed.
And today? We won't have as many adventures as we recover from yesterday. Amber wants to do some laundry, even though I don't know why. I think, then, we are going to do some souvenir shopping...not sure if we are headed over to Mackinaw City for that or trying to stick in St. Ignace. My guess is that we will also visit a casino somewhere along the way. We are supposed to get a lot of rain tonight, so I'll be packing up the outside stuff to get it all in out of the rain before pull-out day tomorrow.
