4:44 a.m. - I woke up this morning and couldn't get back to sleep, so I might as well just get up and start my day. I couldn't get back to sleep because I was thinking about three main things: tires for the camper, tomorrow's one-room school gathering, and last night's BOE retreat meeting.
I need to get new tires for the Eagle. I just looked up when I put new tires on the camper, and it was September of 2021, and I spent almost $900 on five tires. (I wonder if I need to replace the spare.) I was looking at the cost of tires yesterday, and I think I'm going to go with the same tires I purchased back in 2021. I looked at other tires that are supposed to be "better", but they are also double the cost. I think I will just stick with what has worked okay for me...don't fix it if it's not broke.
Speaking of that old saying, at last night's BOE meeting I heard just the opposite - "If it's not broke, break it." I get the idea behind the statement. I guess I just don't agree with it all the time in all circumstances. The idea is to avoid getting complacent and accepting average or what has always been done, which I completely agree with. I think it's a mistake, though, to break "things" just for the sake of doing the breaking to attempt to demonstrate an interest in progress. In all my years of education, a lot of "things" have been broken because "the research said" or because the latest greatest educational thinker created some new idea or model that was the next best thing. And those "things" have come and gone. At last night's meeting, I said more than my share. My guess is there were other attendees wondering, perhaps even cringing, about all the things I was saying - they weren't wrong (at least in my opinion); but they were also hard to hear. For example, a discussion started about our current trend in decreasing average daily attendance by students. I chirped in and stated that while community and parents have seemed to devalue attendance, we also have to look at the message the school district sends. And I gave the example of Rockridge hosting a softball tournament that requires our softball team to miss a day of school, and all the other student-athletes that miss a day of school in order to play softball. If it's okay for our school to say it's okay for softball to miss a day of school, so we can host a softball tournament, shouldn't it also be okay for other reasons to miss school - go play AAU basketball, go to an FFA contest; go to a music contest; go on vacation, cover someone's shift at a job. And I know that there are occasionally legitimate, sound reasons to miss a school day, but it's hard for our school district to tell parents/guardians to value attendance at school, when the school itself condones missing school for reasons that sure don't seem to be for instructional/learning purposes.
And the other item on my mind is tomorrow's gathering of one room schoolhouse alumni. It's on my mind not because I'm worried about it in a negative way....I just am uncertain of how it's going to go. How many people will attend? How will our current ideas be received? Will I get overwhelmed with information and ideas? There just are a lot of unknowns. And it's okay because we are having this gathering to see about next steps/next ideas.
So yesterday I did get in a workout at the Aledo YMCA, but I didn't get back on board with my eating plan, so I'm going to get a cardio workout in today AND get back to the eating plan. I'm also going to continue to prepare for tomorrow's "gathering". I think I will also try to get an appointment for new trailer tires.
