Tuesday, April 30

5:59 a.m. - Yesterday was pretty good for a Monday.  There were many students absent because attendance continues to be optional, and I'm sure many students were just too tired to get out of bed after their prom weekend.  And then yesterday's softball game went fine except it was my fault as the plate umpire that United Township put eight runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning including three home runs which led Sherrard to lose a game.  It's okay; I have a strong back and can handle the weight.  Today's weather, for the first time in a long time, is forecasted to be wonderful!  Yay!  We are supposed to have warm temps, clear skies, and calm winds.  And of course my softball games at Monmouth-Roseville were cancelled.  Maybe I can spray some weeds tonight and do some weed-eating in the backyard.

Monday, April 29

5:54 a.m. - Yesterday was eventful - church service, grocery shopping at HyVee, give the Eagle a scrub bath, and play chess with Cole.  I suppose there isn't much to say about church service nor grocery shopping, but after returning home I decided to use the weather to my benefit and give the Eagle a bath it has been needing for awhile.  With the temperatures not bad and cloudy skies, it was a good time to break out the ladder, hose, and other materials needed to scrub the camper down.  This was all done by hand - no pressure washer.  It's not a difficult job, it's just time consuming.  I was up and down the ladder many times to reach the top of the camper with the microfiber scrub pad.  Over time, the camper shows signs of oxidation on that cream colored outer shell.  These oxidations effects are like little gray/black spots, and they just don't look very good.  Plus on the nose of the camper, it gets a lot of bugs splattered, so getting all the bug remnants off the nose helps it look a little nicer.  I didn't try to spray any ceramic coating on the camper because I didn't have any to use but more importantly I felt like the wind was too strong to try that out.  While it took me a few hours to complete the task, it was a project that was on my my mind for a long time, so finishing it to completion yesterday was a good feeling.

Cole sent me a text asking me what I was doing.  I had finished the camper, so I wasn't doing too much and hadn't planned on much other than going down to Shivers where Amber was working and maybe get some ice cream.  He suggested meeting there to play some chess, which worked out okay.  We just played outside, and it worked out.  We played two games, and I was much more successful on the second game, even though I lost that one too.  Cole is pretty dang good, so beating him is nearly impossible.  Well, for me, it is impossible.  Amber and Deanna were pretty busy in the ice cream shop, so we didn't get to talk to her much.

Today will be an interesting day.  The first day to school after a prom weekend is generally a pretty sluggish one.  The seniors had been talking about a "skip day", so I figure today will be that day.  In English III, will complete a journal write and then see what we can get accomplished to continue the Dick Proenneke unit.  We are getting close to finishing up the transcendentalists and move on to the novel.  Later today, I'm umpiring with Jason at Sherrard.  The Tigers are taking on United Township, and that might be a pretty good game.  I have the next two nights open, so I might be able to get to some yard work if that dang wind will let up.  I'd really like to spray some weeds and maybe try to spray my yard with some herbicide to get rid of the creeping charlie, but I need some dry weather.

Sunday, April 28

8:10 a.m. - Yesterday was productive!  I got to the Farmer's Market, and on the way home I stopped at Mom and Dad's and picked up the remnants of the limb that fell down in their front yard.  Then I came home to Carmen's shower and proceeded to vacuum the pool for the first time because the weather held out - windy and warm but dry.  I had a good visit with Carmen until she left around 3 p.m., and then I proceeded to get the yard mowed, and afterwards I cleaned the mower deck, which was badly needed.  And then the rains came!  And the rain is still here now.  And Amber wants to go to church today.  I don't want to, but I'll feel guilty if I don't go, so I better go.  I'm not sure what today will bring...the weather is a factor.  Apparently we are going to church and then going to pick up a few groceries.  Maybe it will just be a reading day, but I'll need to get my book from my classroom at school.

Saturday, April 27

6:47 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day at school - got my scoring done of those last remaining projects, and I got through the day.  This weekend is even prom weekend, and the students weren't too crazy.  And then last night Amber and I just went over to El Barrill for some supper and then watched a movie at home and then called it a night.  The weather isn't pretty today, but I think the storms and heavy rain are going to hold off to allow me to get some things done if I hurry and take advantage of any dry hours we get.  I know the baby shower for Carmen is starting here at home at 10 a.m.; and I know Carmen is arriving around 9:30 a.m.  I'd like to get some exercise, and I'd like to soak in the hot tub.  I'd also like to get the yard mowed, the pool vacuumed, and that big branch at the farm picked up.  It would be fun to make it over to the Farmer's Market too.

Friday, April 26

6:17 a.m. - I don't know if it's good news or bad news that we aren't camping this weekend.  I guess it's good news I didn't reserve a site somewhere ahead of time because starting in a couple of hours, apparently it's going to be raining on-and-off through Monday morning - the the tune of 4-6 inches of forecasted rain...sheesh.  I would just like a little window somewhere on Saturday to get to my parents and clean up that branch that has fallen from their tree, and if possible, it would be great to mow the yard.  Other than that, maybe I'll be reading my book a lot.  I know Carmen's baby shower is here tomorrow, but I'm not really invited to that, but perhaps I can visit with Carmen after the event is over.

Yesterday was a good day...not quite the battle of previous days, so that was nice.  I think Proenneke's film is resonating with the students like I hoped it would, and then yesterday's softball game at Ridgewood was one of the better games I've had this season.  It was a long night, but I umpired with Jason Danner, so it was more fun.  And then I came home and watched the cable network news commentary shows on the Trump claim to the Supreme Court that he (and apparently every president) should have absolute immunity while a president of the country.  I have never heard of such a ridiculous claim, and what's worse is that we have at least a few supreme court justices who are trying to figure out a way to avoid denying it and upsetting their boy Trump.  Seriously?  How in the hell can that claim even make it to the Supreme Court?  The reason of course is so that the Trump team of lawyers can exhaust every last measure of potentially delaying any trial against Trump.  Sometimes the best defense is just stalling.  Sheesh.

Today...let's get the last of the presentations scored for seventh period.  That shouldn't be hard because most of them are well done.  Let's get a little farther in the Proenneke video.  Let's get a lesson plan made for Monday.  Let's get today's scheduled softball game at Monmouth-Roseville cancelled.  They are scheduled to play Sterling Newman, which would be another loss for the Titans.  Plus, it would only be one game, so I don't really want to drive to Monmouth for $70.  So today get through the school day, get the game cancelled, and come home and watch the rain for my Friday evening.  I think I could take that.

Things for School

  • score training path presentations
  • score/enter scores for Thoreau/Walden completion

Thursday, April 25

6:17 a.m. - Yesterday went okay.  I know it sounds like a broken record sometimes, and maybe it's a little frustrating or depressing that days are okay, right?  Isn't it unreasonable, though, to think that all of our days are going to be magical and special?  Isn't the fact that that the majority of our days are "okay" somehow lends to the reality that other days are special and other days are tragic or sad.  I supposed when we all face the end of our lives, if we can look back and appreciate the majority of "okay" days, then we have something special.  I think I'll be able to do that.

So yesterday, I attempted to helps students better appreciate Thoreau and the perspectives of the transcendentalists, and I felt a few start to think.  I'll hopefully get a few more to think today, and if we start the movie, perhaps a few more will start to think.  My hope is not that all students will become transcendentalists and shed their current lives; my hope is that they will think about the transcendentalist view to attempt to have balance in our lives - not let one part of our lives control the other.  We need to balance work, play, relationships, responsibilities, free time, technology, and relaxation.  We really need it all, but we need to keep all the areas at healthy levels.  We can't let our lives get out of balance...or at least we need to try to keep a balance that we can manage on a daily, weekly, monthly, basis.  That doesn't mean each day can be a balance, but if the balance was a little off during the week, perhaps that realization needs to lend itself to a correction on the weekend.

Today apparently the weather is going to provide one more day of decent weather, and then the monsoon weekend arrives.  It looks like Saturday there will be a little time during the day for me to get over to the farm and accomplish a little work for mom and dad - get the wood and brush picked up from that fallen tree limb, and perhaps get a shot at tilling the garden if the ground isn't too wet.  I'd like to get more of the training path presentations scored too.  I've got two class periods done, and those should be the most difficult to complete.

Wednesday, April 24

6:08 a.m. - One of these days, I'm going to have a day that everything goes smoothly according to plan without hiccups - I'm going to have a day that isn't two steps forward and one step back.  I'm looking forward to that day...maybe it will even be today.  I know it wasn't yesterday.  I did manage to get everything accomplished that I wanted to accomplish, but it took perseverance.  I guess in the long run perseverance is a good characteristic.  In the morning I got the pool filter pulled apart to see that I needed a new valve control mechanism.  I stopped at Walgreens to get my prescription, and then it was off to the pool store.  Of course, the first pool place I went to didn't have the part, but the second place did - hit to wallet #1.  Then I wanted to drop off some pants to get hemmed at Monster Sewing - no, they weren't open at 10 a.m. when I was there; they opened at 11 a.m., so I decided to take a mental break at Panera and have a cinnamon crunch bagel and cup of coffee.  After going back to Monster Sewing a second time, it was off to the eye doctor.  I did get some good news there, as the pressure in my eye seems to be responding to the second dose I'm taking in the afternoon.  (I forgot, I also stopped at Lowe's to get a smoke alarm somewhere in the morning before the eye doctor.)  So equipped with smoke detector and new pool part, I headed back home for installation.  Of course the smoke detector didn't line up so I drilled a new hole in the backing.  Then it was time to tackle the pool filter.  It all went back together, and it does work more smoothly now, but I still have an air problem in the middle return valve leading to the pump casing.  It's not as bad now, and I've pinpointed the problem...I'm just not sure how to completely fix it.  Once that busy day was completed, I grabbed a sandwich and sat down for about a half hour before leaving for a softball game to umpire at Geneseo.  Leafs 22, Alleman 2 - not the best of games to work.  Amber had made a nice supper in the crock pot, so a little conversation with her, some pot roast, and a little news on the Trump trial rounded out my night.  I think my "days off" are actually more work that my teaching days at school.

Today is FRW, (free read Wednesday) so that's good.  I also want to get more presentations scored.  I'd like a quiet day today before I sprint out of the building and try to get to Galesburg to umpire.  It's Galesburg versus Alleman today....Galesburg isn't very good, so this one will be "highly competitive".  Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.  This weekend looks like a complete wash out, so with the truck in the shop getting fixed, the camper will sit next to the house and get wet.  Amber and her daughters are hosting a baby shower for Carmen, so it will be nice to see them.  Maybe I'll just spend the time in the camper!

Tuesday, April 23

7:06 a.m. - I'm getting a little late start to the day today because I'm not going to school.  Instead, I'm heading to an eye appointment, so I'm going to try to get a few things done before and/or after the eye appointment.  One of the things was to give myself a little extra time this morning.  Then I think I'm going to jump in the hot tub and give my sore-but-recovering legs a bit of a soak.  Then I'm going to get dressed for the day and work on that pool filter.  If I need parts for it, I'm going to stop at the pool place and get some parts.  I might also get some pants hemmed and pick up a smoke detector.  At some point I have to get to Geneseo and work another softball night.  Unfortunately, I forgot my glasses and my papers to score at school, so I'm going to have to stop in and pick those things up at some point.

Yesterday was okay for a Monday.  We wrapped up the last of straggling presentations, and we transitioned to our next unit of study - the transcendentalists.  I love this unit, but most of the students hate it.  They struggle to even remotely consider that all of us should think we are somehow related to each other in the universe - not just people, but plants, animals, the environment.  This would mean we should all have an interest in caring for each other, but that's a hard concept for a lot of people to wrap their brains around, especially teenagers who pretty much only care about themselves.

Monday, April 22

6:09 a.m. - I woke up too early to the sound of Bella the cat apparently needing to talk about something at 4:00 a.m.  I tried to go back to sleep, but it didn't work out.  I'm actually feeling a little better today than I expected.  The legs don't hurt quite as bad as yesterday, which is unusual.  Usually, two days after a long run/hike/walk event, the legs are the worst.  Yesterday mowing the yard was a struggle, especially the push mowing, but I just was slower.  After that, I managed to do not much of anything - I did get out in the hot tub, which I think helped the legs a bit.  Maybe I'll try to get in a stretch today, and perhaps that will help the legs too.  Last night, Amber and I watched a movie called The Beekeeper.  It was a little different spin on other similar movies like The Equalizer - the main character basically helps out the little people of the world by killing lots of bad guys.

This morning already I've ordered some chemicals for the hot tub and pool through Amazon, and I ordered a refill on my prescriptions - both things needed to be done sometime today, and the magic of internet and phone call ordering allowed them to happen before 7 a.m.  Also this morning I received my teaching assignment for the 24-25 school year.  It appears I'll be contracted for another year.  My daily schedule is much like this year; it's just my prep period and the Advanced English III section switched.  Seventh period prep has its advantages and disadvantages, but it's doable.  Today is a bit of a "transition day" in English III; we are going to switch back to a literature unit after finishing up the training path presentations.  Tomorrow I have to take a day off for an eye exam.  This one caught me by a bit of surprise; I received a notification over the weekend, which is not like me...usually I'm good about putting that kind of stuff on a calendar.
