6:51 a.m. - There's my father-in-low Jack in front of our new camper. The Eagle has landed, and the whole day yesterday was nerve-wracking and full of learning. Mr. Strachan rode with me early yesterday to Minier, and we finalized the purchase with Joe and Lois. We then installed the hitch accessories that we needed to install and successfully pulled out. Shawn was great, as he provided live on-the-road training of pulling a fifth wheel trailer - letting me know about the differences I would encounter from pulling this trailer versus the travel trailer we previously owned. The tires weren't a problem as I had feared, and the cooler temperatures helped with that. As I have been told many times by others, even though the trailer is much bigger than our previous JayFlight, it pulls much smoother.
Shawn then help even more when he offered to take the trailer to his place and power wash it. Taking his power washer to the camper really helped lift the top grime. There are smaller things I still want to get a magic eraser to in order to really brighten it up, but it looks good for now. The picture below is at Shawn's shop on Turkey Hollow Road.
The next step was attempting to back in the trailer into the spot by our house, which was another thing that had wracked my brain and kept me awake at night. I just wasn't sure how or even if it was going to fit, and how I was going to learn to back it in. With Shawn's help again, I struggled to back it in to the spot. There is definitely going to be a learning curve to backing it with the fifth wheel hitch. Eventually, though, we got it into the spot, and we learned we have just enough room to get all the slides out - even the bedroom slide. I can't tell you the joy that brought me! To have it fit and to be able to get all the slides completely out when we need them out to clean or pack or unpack - that's AWESOME. (I also learned I have a place to park it this winer inside a shed next to my mom and dad's place.)
I don't even really want to mention this next part because it's so minor compared to everything that went well, but when I was on top of the trailer at Shawn's I noticed that one of the vent lids was cracked. So after we got it home, I tried to make a run to Camping World, but they didn't have what I needed. So I ordered a couple of replacement lids (and purchased a couple of covers at Camping World while I was there). I'll get those things installed hopefully later this week.
Then I finished up the evening cleaning the storage areas underneath the unit, and tried to return all the "stuff" into the compartment. There is going to be a little learning curve to a "system" of storage compared to what I had with the JayFlight. There was a front compartment and rear compartment with the JayFlight, but there is only a front compartment with the Eagle. There is overall more storage, but he storage is higher, so I need to stack items in the storage area, and I'm just not sure of the stacking and storage procedure, but that will become clearer when we get it out camping.
So as I type this, the camper is next to the house, slideouts all extended, and the garage has room again for the HHR! Amber gave a lot of tours yesterday and I'm guess she'll give a few more today.
