5:53 a.m. - It's Friday, and it's no umpiring/officiating today, tomorrow, or Sunday.  I'm thinking right after school today I'm going to run into town to get chlorine for the pool, a haircut, and that transfer case speed sensor.  Then I'm going to head home and work on mowing the yard.  I don't like going to the pool place because the idea of buying stuff to just pour out into the pool just hits me the wrong way every time.  I know the chemicals are for the pool to look nice and be available to swim in, but I don't like it.  Plus, I feel like the dang pool place overcharges me because they know they can because they know I have to have the chemicals.  The yard is going to take a little time because it has grown with this week's sun, but I think I can run my errands and get back and have enough daylight to accomplish the yard.  

Today at school I get to see Trooper Wilson, who will be the last presenter we will have.  I haven't seen him for a couple of years, so it will be good to catch up on life.  I thought it was pay day today, too, but I haven't seen anything in my bank account this morning, so maybe it will arrive sometime tomorrow.

6:03 a.m. - Here's the thing about working as a softball umpire in the rain.  As my partner put it last night....rain is annoying.  Unfortunately, it's also doable.  So besides the on field stuff that includes the basic premise of getting wet, there is the task of exchanging wet softballs with dry softballs.  BUT the worst is having to go home and layout all the plate gear to get dry and layout shoes to dry that then have to be cleaned off.  So right now on top of my car is are all of my plate gear items and shoes waiting for me to clean off and put back into my car for tonight's games at Sherrard.  There's my morning vent for the day.

It's Thursday; it's garbage day; it's my (hopefully) last softball game for the week before I have an entire weekend to work my ass off around the house and get things in order - yard, pool, camper.  Those are three small words representing three BIG things to accomplish.

In recent local news, Mercer County has quarantined its entire high school until May 8 because a positive COVID case was reported that had attended the parent-sponsored prom at Modern Woodmen Park.  Of course, now there is social media bashing everywhere of everyone.  BUT HERE'S THE DEAL....it's only a big deal because of the extra-curriculars that are getting postponed/cancelled.  Few, if anyone, would have their underwear bunched up if this was only affecting school.  I get why the parents did it, but I struggle to have any sympathy for the situation.  Everyone involved took a chance when they attended the event, and unfortunately a positive case occurred which affected everyone involved.  Rockridge did the same thing, and perhaps they will get lucky and not positive cases will surface and affect 10 days of extracurricular activities.

Up today at school is WIU.  This is a presentation most of the students have been most interested in seeing, along with the private college.  Kassie Daly does a nice job with presenting, so I won't have to do much.  Then tomorrow is Trooper Jason Wilson, who also does a nice job.  I'm definitely on the downhill side of the unit.

 5:26 a.m. - I need a rainout!  Today, I'm supposed to be umpiring at Monmouth-Roseville, which will mean a late night because the field has lights and because MonRose typically is not very good at softball, so a lot of balls will be called and a lot of runs will be scored.  BUT....a rainout would not only give me a night off, it would also give me a chance to knock some of the items off of my "to-do list".  I checked the radar and the hourly forecast for Monmouth, and I'm seeing showers forecast for noon and 1 p.m., which would be just dandy.

Last night we ended up working 3-man at Rock Island because of an umpiring mix-up.  Three man is fun, but I don't do it much, so getting in the groove is sometimes hard.  There are just coverage areas that change when going from 2-man umpiring to 3-man.  The game was a good game, which is much different than the other three high school games I've had.  Of course, LaSalle-Peru scored two runs late in the game to tie it up and send the game to extra innings.  Why would my first good game of the season not go extra innings?  On the other hand, it was only one extra inning, so it only added about 20 minutes to the game time.

I was then able to run to Milan to get my eye drops from Walgreens along with some batteries, and then when I got home there was enough daylight to remove the pool cover.  I still don't have the motor hooked up and the whole thing "de-winterized", but removing the pool cover is a first step.  Now if I get my rainout tonight I can run into the pool place and pick up some chlorine in the truck.  And if I do that, I can also pick up a part for the truck and get a haircut - two more items on the to-do list.  I need to pick up a transfer case speed sensor because the dang speedometer isn't working...I think it's a little job I can do myself fairly easy. (knock on wood)

I'm going to check out the weather this morning and see about perhaps folding the pool cover up and sticking it in the garage.  I might even drive the little security bolts back into the concrete if I have time.  And on the other hand, if the pool cover gets rained on and rinsed off, it's not that big of deal.

Today at school we have the NAVY arriving, at least I hope so.  I sent a message to the rep yesterday confirming her visit, but I didn't hear back from her.  I guess if she doesn't arrive, then we will "Free Read Wednesday" the day.  Yesterday, the rep from Morrison Tech gave me a bird feeder designed by one of the students at the school, which is odd because I have thought about a bird feeder for awhile now.  I just need to figure out where the best spot might be to try it out.

Yesterday's RTA (teachers association) meeting wasn't very fun.  Our Association President shared the scenario of the current status of our group, and she did a great job.  Unfortunately, there are just a lot of concerns I have about our affiliation with IEA/NEA, and there are other folks that feel the same way.  Also unfortunately, the role of President is very big, and no one currently has expressed interest in assuming that role after the current person's term expires.  I'm not sure what happens next if someone else doesn't express interest in the role.

5:21 a.m.  - My pay for last night's umpiring was $105, and that sounds great.  We started at 4:30 with the varsity game, and I didn't walk off the diamond until 9:00 because both the varsity and fresh/soph games were VERY long.  And some people would say that's over $20 an hour for JUST umpiring softball, and there probably was a time when I was just starting out that I would say I didn't mind.  And MAYBE if I wasn't dead tired from working 12 youth games over the weekend, last night wouldn't have been as bad.  Last night, though, under all the circumstances, I was really wondering if it was all worth it.  I hope I'm just tired.  I remember last year this time I wasn't even allowed out of the house due to lockdown, so just the opportunity to be outside on a diamond is something I should be thankful for, but that was a long night.  Tonight I'm at Rock Island for one varsity game, so HOPEFULLY, I'll have a shorter night.

Today at school Jodie Eaker will be in class from Morrison Tech, and I use to work with her there when I was an admissions rep with the school  It will be nice to see her, and she will be good for the students.

Monday, 4-26

5:59 a.m. - Yesterday everything went okay until the last game, which was bad.  It was just a bad game with bad plays and umpiring errors and just bad.  Plus earlier in the day we had had a cold rain which got everything wet.  I wish the last game hadn't gone poorly because the rest of the weekend had gone well to that point.  We still got paid, still made good money...just wish that last game would have been better.  Today, I have high school softball, and tomorrow, and Wednesday, and Thursday.  There is a possibility of rain in the forecast, so perhaps a ran-out night will occur.  I'm going to take the weekend off from umpiring, I think, so that might help too.  Today at school I think we have Black Hawk East coming in, and she is always full of energy and should be fine without much assistance from me.
