Saturday, January 24

7:36 a.m. - Yesterday was FREAKING COLD!  Wind chills were negative 30 below and worse, and it felt every bit of that when I took out the garbage cans to the end of the drive.  And that cold weather didn't really include very much wind, and there was no snow on the ground.  YIKES!  We don't get that type of cold very often.

We did hunker down yesterday since school was canceled.  The only thing we did outside, other than the garbage cans, was to help Amber get the yellow activity bus out and gassed up.  It was nice to just lounge and read yesterday; I'm enjoying the two books I'm reading.

Today....oh today!  Amber is going on her first bus trip to a cheerleading event in Sterling.  I thought I was going to have one game at West Central, but now I'm actually working two games since Jason Danner is sick and needs a replacement.  My other game, though, is in Fulton.  I like working at Fulton, and it will be fun working with Tad and Robbie.  It's just too bad that my noon game is an hour northeast, and my 6 p.m. game is an hour southwest.

One of my very top things to do is go camping with Amber, when we both can just be at a campground and spend time together.  It's relaxing and fun just to be present in the moment and be together.  Beyond that, though, is a day like today...I get to be with officiating friends; I get to be on basketball courts; I get to experience a shootout and a hospitality room.  Spending a day driving around with friends and working basketball games ... good stuff.

Did I mention that last night's game was an "adventure"?  We had a technical foul on a player in the sophomore game.  Then we had a bench warning, a bench technical, and two spectator ejections in the varsity game.  Ugh.  That meant I submitted an IHSA special report this morning.  Unfortunately, we are in the "long portion" of the basketball season - we are past the excitement of the beginning of the year...we are past the holidays...the post season excitement is still a few weeks away.  And teams and coaches and fans are "settled in".  Either they are a pretty good team and they expect to win, or they are a struggling team, and they are tired of losing.  Plus, the weather sucks, and everyone is a little tired and grumpy this time of year until the weather turns a little closer to Spring.  We've got a couple more weeks of "tough weeks"...and then the end of the season will get closer and everyone won't be as grumpy.

And here's the thing.  I LOVE being in the heat of the moment in a basketball game.  I enjoy it so much, and I'm focused so much, that I really honestly don't recognize poor behavior from coaches and fans.  I did get irate at Geneseo earlier in the week when Tony asked site management for assistance, and the admins didn't do anything.  And I do hear the dumb comments from the stands from time-to-time.  Here's the deal, though, unless the gym is ridiculously quiet, or unless a coach just unloads on me with profanity or is noticeably out on the floor acting like an idiot - I just don't see it or hear it.  And maybe I should...maybe I'm not doing my job of enforcing good behavior and coaching boxes and all of that stuff.  I just don't get upset about it...it's noise...let them be idiots, let me officiate the game I love.
