5:47 a.m. - I've been officiating volleyball for six years. That's not as long as basketball (13 years) or softball (14 years), but six years is still a pretty good run. In all that time, I have NEVER even come close to issuing a yellow card or red card for unsporting conduct. In fact, I've never even taken the cards with me on the court. Last night I learned a lesson...there may always be a first. And last night I should have issued a yellow conduct card, but I didn't have them with me. I took care of that between set 2 and set 3; I put them in my back pocket and was ready. Ready is a relative term because I really don't even know how to use them, so that's something I will look up today and study. Two mediocre teams playing each other with Mendota at Kewanee, and both coaches and teams wanting and needing a win. I get that; I used to coach, and sometimes during some seasons wins are hard to come by. Last night, though, the Mendota coach went too far. I won't let that happen again. I'm going to study, and I'm going to make sure I have the cards in my back pocket from now on.
Today is activity day, which means there are no classes and teachers have to go outside and supervise what basically amounts to a high school carnival/pep rally. It's not all that big of a deal, and we get to see the students outside of the classroom. Nice weather does help, but there is a chance of rain in the forecast. One thing that isn't a good part of the day is professional development. I'm still not a fan of PD.
Later today while the Homecoming Parade is in town - weather permitting - I'll be in Monmouth for a volleyball match between Sherrard and MonRose. The gym will be loud, and the two teams are pretty even...should be fun. This is the last time Braeden and I will work volleyball this season, perhaps the last time we work volleyball together ever. We hope the evening goes quickly, so we can grab a celebration supper; I fear, though, that it's going to be a long night. Wow, this has been a long week.
