Wednesday, December 2

6:14 a.m. - It's Wednesday.  This stretch of December is going to be challenging; there are very few bright spots to the day - work, news, weather, and just life in general.  I think we need to work harder at trying to be innovative and creative at brightening our own days in ways that fit us best.  At school other teachers are trying to find ways associated with the holidays, and that's positive.  Unfortunately for me, dress-up days and door decorating contests and things like that seem to just be more work than really something that brightens my day.  Yesterday, I went for a walk out at Loud Thunder.  It was a little scary because dotted here and there are cars and truck with orange stickers indicating deer hunters, and I hear guns in the distance, but Karrigan told me those are likely duck hunters along the river.  So despite being a little afraid of getting impaled with an arrow or shot, I took my nordic poles and walked the campgrounds of Deer Haven, White Oaks, and Indian Meadows.  For me, this activity was a bright spot.  The air was cold and crisp, there was no wind, and other than the birds and an occasional distant shot gun, there was silence.  I'm hoping to go back again today...I may even just leave from school and head that direction.  In class we are examining the transcendentalists and their belief that nature gives people opportunities to think, relax, and grow spiritually.  I definitely felt that on my walk last night, and that's usually the case when I get a chance to take walks or hikes or jogs out in a park or wooded area.
