Friday, May 31

9:30 a.m. - The camper is at the campground, but I'm home to mow the yard.  The forecast is calling for rain tomorrow, so I should do it today and get it done for he weekend.  We had a good day yesterday, but I didn't sleep well.  I did wake up during the night and forgot we were camping.  It was nice to look around and realize that we were camping.

Thursday, May 30

6:01 a.m. - The thing about grades in high school at the end of the year is this....I'm not in the business of making students happy or being sympathetic.  On the other hand, there shouldn't be any surprises.  So after posting grades, students and their parents/guardians shouldn't get zapped with something unusual.  I think (knock on wood) that is the case today.  I did post grades yesterday, and so far I have not received any information from any students.

But boy yesterday was a long one.  I got the last of exams completed early in the morning, and the rest of the day was spent scoring exams and getting ready for the end of the school year.  Then after that, we had a long night of umpiring softball at Davenport North.  I had additional work I needed to complete at school, so I even stopped there after 9 p.m. to do some more work in the classroom.  I think I'm ready to hand everything in and then get the camper over to West Lake Park. I might even try to get the camper hooked up this morning.

Wednesday, May 29

5:24 a.m. - Happy Birthday Knox Hayes Southwell!  Yesterday Pat and Kourtney brought baby boy Knox into our world in the afternoon.  I'm not supposed to say a lot yet because I don't think the official online "press-release" has been posted in social medial land, but I think it's safe to at least say that much.  Around that special event, I got three-of-four sections of semester exams pushed out and taken, and then I wrapped up the night in Clinton with some softball umpiring - final combined score of the JV double-header -- Clinton 1, Pleasant Valley 40.

Moving on to today.  I've got one more section of semester exams to start the day, and then I'll be working on scoring exams for the remainder of the day, finalizing grades, completing paperwork, and getting the room ready for summer.  And then I'm off to Davenport North for another JV softball double-header that I'm guessing will again set the world on fire.

In national news, Former President Trump's hush money trial had closing arguments.  The judge will give the jury instructions, and then the jury will start deliberations.  I'd be surprised if he's found guilty.  My guess is that there will be at least one person that will hold out.

The weather is looking favorable for camping this weekend, and I stopped by the Summit Campground on my way back home last night, and the campground is open.  I'm hoping to get the camper over there tomorrow night.

Tuesday, May 28

5:45 a.m. - Yesterday worked out well.  I picked up mom at 8 a.m. at her house, and we drove down to Fort Madison to see Carmen and Tyler.  They are both doing great...Carmen's pregnancy is progressing along as it should and she's about three weeks from her due date.  In other news, they purchased the house next door to them and are going to be renovating it into a rental property.  We went for ice cream at Hall's, and then we drove down to see Carmen's place of work.  We tried to stop at Hinterland's Dairy for some cheese curds, but they were closed, but we did stop at Wilson Lake Campground to show her around there.  Then we went back to Carmen and Tyler's and they made us a little lunch.  On the way back home I took mom to the casino in Burlington, and we spun a few slots.  I think we were home before 5 p.m., so it just ended up being a really nice day for a drive and visit.  Mom had never seen those sites before, and I don't think she had ever met Arlo the dog before either.  When I dropped mom off, Amber had told me that she and the Southwell children were over in Reynolds at Jack and Rhonda's, so I went over there and visited with them for awhile too.  Then it was back to the house for some supper and bed.

Kourtney was induced last night, and I haven't received any news on my phone, but as I'm writing this Amber isn't awake yet, so maybe she's gotten some news.  My guess Baby Southwell be arriving this morning some time if it isn't already with us.  So today will be a big day as we welcome another Southwell to the fold.

I have semester exams today, and then I'm headed to Clinton for softball umpiring.  Ya, it's going to be an eventful, busy, and long day.

Overall, the holiday weekend wasn't a camping weekend, but I would say it was a successful one!  Now, to just wrap up the school year and get going on summer.

Monday, May 27 - Happy Memorial Day

5:53 a.m. - Yesterday, I made more lemonade out of the lemons of not camping.  I ended up getting out the Blackstone and setting it up in the garage because the forecast called for rain that really never appeared.  I cooked up some brats and fixings for supper.  Before that Amber and I were busy - first up was church service, and then she went to visit Kourtney while I did a few things around the house and went to the school for a little workout.  That was needed, and I'm feeling the effects today, but I needed to do some strength training and running now that softball season is over and I'm not worried about hurting myself.  And then last night it was a quiet evening of television.

I did put the slides back in on the camper, and I tried to get the television antenna down, and the handle malfunctioned, so that's something I need to fix next week.  I hope I can get by without ordering a new hand, but I may need to.  I also worked on the grill, as I couldn't get the igniter to work on Saturday.  I think I've ordered the correct replacement part.  And while I was on Amazon, I did some additional shopping by ordering a new fire pit here for home and something else that now I can't even remember.  Damn Amazon.

Since my brother is coming back home next weekend, I decided not to go to Missouri to visit him, but I did make plans to go visit Carmen in Fort Madison.  I also asked my mom if she wanted to go, and she said yes.  Today, then, will be an adventure day to go visit Carmen and Tyler and their dog Arlo.  I don't really have any grand agenda...we'll just float with the wind and see where the day takes us.

Sunday, May 26

7:28 a.m.  - When life throws you lemons, make lemonade.  That's what I did yesterday.  The softball game that was supposed to be Friday night ended up being yesterday at 12:30 at Moline.  Everything I was doing for the day and the weekend was dependent on getting that game done.  And we did!  The day was awesome for weather, and I had some time before the game to run some errands.  The game itself was a close one.  Moline lost 4-3 with the bases loaded in the top of the last inning.  The batter popped up to first base, and that was the game.  Of course the Moline faithful behind the backstop didn't think much of me umpiring behind the plate, but you'll have that.  The thing most people don't understand is that good umpires fully realize they are going to misread balls and strikes from time-to-time.  So when the insults start being lobbed at me from behind me...knowing I really can't and shouldn't do much about it...it disappointing and frustrating but not really surprising.  I really wanted to go to the backstop fence and ask them if the pop out to first was my fault too.  Our crew of umpires did fine...there weren't any controversial calls or questions from the coaches, so that was good.  We weren't always in sync with proper three-man mechanics, but we are the only ones that really knew that.

After the game, I picked up some brats and couple of steaks at Meatheads in Milan.  I found out my brother is going to come home next weekend, so I scratched going to go visit him this weekend.  Upon arriving home, I decided to make it a camping night at home.  I pulled out the slides on the camper, made a campfire, and decided to just have a quiet evening.  I managed to soak in the inflatable hot tub and watch some Batman on MeTV in the camper too before turning in on that wonder mattress we have in the camper.  Even Amber joined me.  Amber didn't last the whole night, but I did...even through the thunderstorm that arrived early this morning.  And as I'm typing thoughts, it's raining hard again.  In fact, it's supposed to rain a lot today and then another round of rain may arrive this afternoon.  This weather had been forecasted, so that's why I wanted to take advantage of the one nice day and night that we were going to get for the weekend.  All-in-all, yesterday was a success.  We weren't somewhere at a campground, but we made due with a substitute.  All of that was better than sitting in front of the television on a beautiful night or going to the casino and losing money.

I'm not sure what today is going to bring.  Maybe in between rain events we can get in a little bike ride.  I will make a trip to visit mom and dad too.  They had a little work for me to complete, so maybe if there is a little weather clearing, we can get that done.

I know tomorrow I'm headed to Fort Madison to go visit Carmen.  I haven't seen her in awhile and probably won't see her before she has her baby, so tomorrow is the day to pay her and Tyler a visit.

Saturday, May 25

6:29 a.m. - Yesterday was unique.  It's not everyday we start school under a tornado warning.  Needless to day, my first period class started with I think four students.  The storms passed, though, and we got through the last regular school day without further incident.  My game at Moline was washed out, so after school, Amber and I picked up Jack and Rhonda, and we went to Brooklyn and Brinley's first softball game at Sherrard.  The weather was awful, but they played anyway and the girls did great.  After that, we loaded up in the van and went to Bally's for supper at the sports bar and some slot play.  No, I was not a winner.

Today, the weather is going to cooperate for the game if they can get the field ready.  Tomorrow and Monday look like wash out days again.  I think I may head south.  I could go visit Carmen and perhaps even go further south and visit Darren.  We've got to get today's game over first before I can make any decisions like that.  Before today's game, I may head over to the farmer's market in Davenport just for something to do.  I also need to pick up my prescription at Walgreen's.

I'm not sure what tonight is going to bring, but I'm thinking maybe a nice little bonfire might be fun and relaxing.  Then again, maybe I could head out after the game and go south....just not sure yet.  I'm glad I did get the yard mowed on Thursday, as it doesn't look like Sunday nor Monday are going to be mowing days.

Friday, May 24 - Happy Birthday Chase

6:09 a.m. -  Last regular school day of 23-24...it had to come sometime.  And as a special treat, a strong morning thunderstorm is scheduled to arrive around 8 a.m.  Sheesh.

Yesterday was a good day.  Students didn't irritate me too much, and after getting home, I cleaned the mower deck and mowed the yard.  I was pretty tired after getting done; I think I'm becoming more and more allergic to grass as I get older.

Today should be quiet.  I have one last set of assignments to score and enter into Lumen, and we need to finish up the films to the novels for the respective class periods.  The big question about today is whether we will be playing softball at Moline or waiting until tomorrow.  My guess is that we will be waiting until tomorrow, which then means wondering what to do with our Friday night.  My guess is that Amber will have some suggestions.  A rainout today will mean an 11:00 a.m. start for the championship tomorrow.  I can live with that...just want to get the Illinois season over.

Thursday, May 23

5:19 a.m. - Yesterday was long but productive day.  We got through the school day by assigning the last section of the novels for the English III students.  All the journal grades have been entered as well as the exit survey grades.  Now I'm just getting straggling late and make-up grade requests, which I'll get through the rest of the week.  Today, we'll play the movies that correspond to the novels, and students can have time to finish up their assignments.  Yesterday was also the last Free Read Wednesday, so now I'll work to get students to return their library books.  The school year is winding down.

On the diamonds yesterday, the Rockridge baseball team didn't do very well, but it was great to see them advance to the sectional.  The Rockridge softball team won and advanced to the sectional championship.  In my games at Moline, neither game was close.  We are scheduled to have the championship game on Friday, but the forecast isn't looking good for Friday, so my guess is that we will be playing on Saturday.  It will be Bradley-Bourbannais vs. Moline.  The game could be an adventure.  One of my partners is shaky on 3-umpire mechanics; the other partner is really shaky.  They are both good guys, though, so we'll get through it.  In last night's game, I called a United Township runner out for leaving early.  The UT coach wasn't happy with me; the UT fans weren't happy with me.  Neither reaction was surprising.  The really irritating thing is that I told the girl not to leave early and run herself into an out.  The next pitch she did it again, so I called her out.  I tried.  Of course neither the coach nor the fans knew I attempted to manage the game before calling the out, but that's the way it goes.  And you know what?  The next times she was on base, she concentrated harder on not leaving early.

I'm a little bummed that we won't be camping this weekend, but since Friday and Sunday are going to be washout days with storms in the forecast, and it looks like I'm going to be umpiring on Saturday...well, we might as well keep the Eagle parked at home.  Maybe I can have a least one night of camping at home.

Wednesday, May 22

5:34 a.m. - The big storms that were forecasted for yesterday stayed away from us.  They did hit hard west and north of us, but we received nothing...maybe a few raindrops.  It was windy, but the winds were just gusty and didn't cause any damage.  We probably could have gotten that softball game in at Moline, but it wouldn't have been very nice conditions.  And now Friday is forecasted to be a rainy day, so maybe the championship game will be moved to Sunday.  And the weekend isn't shaping up very well with the weather conditions either - no summer-like temps like last weekend.

What action that didn't occur outside did occur inside.  Karrigan came over with her three dogs, and Kourtney started getting contractions, so Tucker and Rosie spent the night too.   It's been awhile since we've had so much activity in the house.  I went to bed early and tried to stay our of the fray.

Today at school is the last Free Read Wednesday of the year, and I have one more set of journals to score and enter.  I have to leave school early today, so Mrs. Neece is going to cover my seventh period.  In the middle there is locker clean-up and a send-off assembly for boys state track qualifiers.  Then I have two games today at Moline.  Ya, it's going to be a long day.

Tuesday, May 21

5:54 a.m. - The weather forecasters are calling for a significant storm threat this afternoon.  Yikes.  Yesterday, Moline High School was sending out messages about postponing today's game until tomorrow, which is okay.  I'll just have to ask for some personal time off from school, but that shouldn't be a problem.  It's going to be a warm one, so I'm going to be wearing some shorts and turning on the fans in the classroom.

Yesterday went okay.  I was able to get some things done, and in the evening we went to Tucker's game.  I still don't understand the concept of pitching to pre-schoolers who can't swing a bat correctly, but nobody asked my opinion.  Just put the ball on the tee and let them hit.

Monday, May 20

5:57 a.m. - Whew, what a day yesterday!  I slept well last night and am sore this morning after all the yard work that was completed.  I mowed the yard, but more importantly I weed wacked all the weeds.  I could have probably sprayed some Round-up that I've been meaning to do, but the wind was a little unpredictable and after getting all the yard work finished, I was tired.  And all the weeds down didn't come any too soon, as storms are predicted for today and tomorrow.  Also yesterday I worked on the pool and confirmed that the pool liner is in need of being replaced.  That's not a surprise, but it's not exactly something that is easy on the wallet.  I'm going to set that aside in my brain for now because I don't want to think about it.

After all the work yesterday, I thought about heading to Fort Madison and seeing Carmen and Tyler, but they weren't home until later in the afternoon.  I did go see mom and dad and had a nice visit with them.  I also managed to skip the RHS graduation, which wasn't exactly a priority.  I know it's a good thing to have teachers there, but I got a lot of work done, so I'm really all not that upset about it.  Amber was there, so that's good enough.

The big drawback to the weekend is that we didn't go camping, but there was a lot accomplished, so I guess we'll live for another weekend to get the Eagle out on the road.

Sunday, May 19

7:07 a.m. - Yesterday went as is should have...which wasn't really what I wanted to do, but at least nothing unexpected happened.  I got a few things done in the morning, including vacuuming the pool.  The I went and worked softball, which I normally don't do weekend softball because I generally want to be camping on the weekends.  Since I had a IHSA tournament game Friday, though, I picked up a double-header yesterday.  And like I expected, I was reminded why I don't prefer to work on the weekends.  I was gone for the entire afternoon, and when I got back home supper was on the table and the pool party with the grandchildren was over.  Afternoon umpiring just takes up to much of a weekend day that could be spent doing something else.  The games went fine, and working with Steve Vandervinne was fun, but it's just too much time.  Last night was pretty much television and bed.

Because of yesterday, today will be a work day.  I have to get the lawn mowed and maybe some weeds wacked.  The Rockrdridge graduation ceremony is today, but I'm not sure if I'll make that.  I may end up driving to Fort Madison to see Tyler and Carmen.

Saturday, May 18

6:31 a.m. - Yesterday was Friday.  It was a good Friday...not THE Good Friday, but it was a g good Friday.  The school day went well, as we accomplished a couple of housekeeping items that will clear the way for us to finish the novels next week.  I also completed my semester exams, so those are ready to go.  And last night's championship game at the Riverdale Regional went fine.  It took Riverdale a while to get their bats going, but the Rams won 7-2.  Our crew was a little shaky at times, but we got through it.

Today I picked up a softball double header at Rock Island because we weren't going to go camping due to last night's softball assignment.  I get to work with Steve Vandervinne, and Steve just learned yesterday that he was selected to work the 1A/2A state finals.  I'm happy for him...it's overdue.  After that, I'm not sure what's going on.  I do wish I could get the yard mowed, and I need to vacuum the pool.  I also would like to spray weeds.  All of those things can likely get done tomorrow, too, but the grass is getting a little long.

Friday, May 17

6:07 a.m. - Yesterday was completed without difficulty.  Amber and I went to Boondock's in Joy to have some supper because we we attended Brinley's preschool graduation at the former Westmer Secondary School.  The supper was good...a buffet, so of course  ate too much.  And the graduation ceremony was cute as they announced the name of each graduate and what they wanted to be when they grew up.

Overnight the IHSA posted assignments for 3A/4A Sectionals and 1A/2A SuperSectionals.  I'm in neither, which was expected, but my friend Steve has the 1A/2A SuperSectional at Black Hawk College, so that's awesome for him.  My road in the softball season is done, which is good...I want it to be done.

Today's weather is supposed to be nice, so at least the weather will be good for today's softball game at Riverdale.  Personally, I'm just interested in the truck stop pizza afterwards.  Then tomorrow I have a double-header at Rock Island starting at noon.  Warm weather will be the story for that day too.  Maybe summer is deciding to show up.

Thursday, May 16

5:55 a.m. - Yesterday was a much simpler day.  The school day went smoothly, and there were no softball games.  After school, Kenzie cut my hair, and the afternoon was spent with the Harrison grandchildren and the Karrigan and Michael grand dogs.  I even went to bed early.  Simple days are nice.  I would have liked to mowed the grass, but maybe I can get to that today after school if it doesn't rain.  The weekend weather forecast is looking dry and summer like.  It would have been a nice weekend to be camping if it wasn't for softball.  This isn't much of a report today, and that's a good thing.  I hope I didn't jinx myself with that statement, though.

Wednesday, May 15

5:59 a.m. - I suspected yesterday was going to be a long day, and it was.  I was visited by Mrs. Graves, Mrs. Hasson, and Mrs. Bohnsack yesterday regarding student matters, which doesn't happen very often.  I dealt with student matters yesterday, which doesn't happen very often.  And then we had two varsity regional games at Riverdale and I didn't leave the diamond until 9 p.m., which doesn't happen very often.  So yesterday was a long day.  I don't anticipate today being a duplicate.  I'd like to get through the day, get a haircut after school, and then maybe mow the yard.  If I don't get to the yard today, though, tomorrow might work.

Our regional games went fine.  I got straightlined on a play and had a safe call that was close that the Sherrard coach didn't like, and our crew was a little shaky at times executing 3-umpire mechanics, but that wasn't a big deal.  Working in a 3-umpire crew is SO MUCH nicer than just two.  Most of the time you just are in a better position to make the call.  I was on third base for the first game and first base for the second game, so I was running around a lot, but that's okay.

One thing I really needed today was pay day.  The cash flow has been in a crunch lately, so today couldn't come soon enough.  The balances still aren't great, but there's a little breathing room now - just need to avoid unexpected expenditures at this point and give myself some time to build things up a bit again.

Tuesday, May 14

6:01 a.m. - Today is going to be a long, long day.  The weather forecast appears to be showing that we are going to be able to play softball in Port Byron today.  We have two games to get through - 4:30 and 6:30.  I'd be willing to place a nice healthy wager that the second game will never start by 6:30 p.m.  The first game is Sherrard vs. Kewanee; the second game is Knoxville vs. Riverdale.  Both games will probably go the whole seven innings, and I have third base for the first game and first base for the second game.  My excitement and enthusiasm is not very high.

Yesterday was okay...we had a little journal write activity and discussed some analysis questions to the novel and then continued reading.  The day was pretty laid back, especially with the seniors not in attendance.  I did have one little student flare up second period, so I sent him out.  I'm too old and grumpy to have much patience for situations like that.

One thing I didn't get done yesterday was a haircut.  Amber's heart rate was too high yesterday, and she was concerned, so she went to the ER.  I think she went in around lunch time.  I drove in after school, and she still hadn't been seen by a doctor - so much for speedy care.  She ended up leaving and now has an appointment today with her cardiologist.  Just sitting in that waiting room was pretty pathetic.  It was horribly awkward watching the several people that had also been there a very long time.  Amber had said there was even some sort of police involvement incident earlier in the day.  She did sleep okay for most of the night, but she says that her blood pressure is still high this morning.
