Friday, March 31

6:18 a.m. - Okay, okay, okay Mother Nature, I guess I'm not supposed to go camping this weekend!  In like a lamb; out like a lion...alright!  Tornadoes, hail, high winds, snow...geez!  I'll stay home!  On Friday, the weather forecast was bad....all week the weather forecast has gotten worse and worse.  The Eagle will remain in storage for at least another weekend.

Yesterday...went fine...students bubbled in their SAT answer sheets...I graded training path assignments.  Then softball went fine last night.

Today is a half day...and apparently our in-service will be cut short, so we can get home before the storms.  Hopefully I have this computer and home tomorrow morning to give all the details of how it all shakes down.

This week did feature some softball paychecks, so that was nice.  I think I'll go deposit those in the bank sometime today.  And today will be a Free Read Friday.  Normally, there is Free Read Wednesday, but we've missed a couple of Wednesdays, so in honor of 11:30 dismissal...we'll go with a free read today.

Thursday, March 30

6:02 a.m. - The weather outlook for this weekend continues to look crappy.  Camping at Loud Thunder doesn't appear likely...damn.

Yesterday...another good day...good day from our visitor presenter...survived softball in the cold.

Today...no instruction from me and no visitor.  Well...there will be a visitor, but Mrs. Reed is visiting to help students prepare their answer sheets for the SAT.  I'll be scoring training path worksheets and entering grades.  In short, this will not be a very fun day.  Later on, I head to Riverdale...to work Riverdale and Monmouth-Roseville again.  I had these two teams at Monmouth on Monday...I've had Monmouth-Roseville three times this week.  It's never a lot of fun having a team too many times, but sometimes that's just how scheduling works out.

Wednesday, March 29

6:06 a.m. - Yesterday's rep from Monmouth College didn't show...she sent a message informing me she was sick.  I punted with video files from last year, the college's website, and my own assistance with a couple of things.  It wasn't ideal, but I didn't want to waste the period nor make up the visit in April.  Then it was off to A-Town.  Apparently I didn't have one of my better games of umpiring, but it didn't matter.  A-Town isn't very good.

I think I'm going to try to strength train upper body this morning, but I'll have to hurry.

Today, the NAVY arrives and then I'm off to United for softball...maybe.  The temps are pretty cold today, so I would not be surprised if the game is postponed.

Camping this weekend still doesn't look good, but we were also supposed to get only a dusting of snow last Saturday which turned into 7 inches of snow on the ground.

Tuesday, March 28

5:57 a.m. - Yesterday went fine.  General Grind was in the room to talk about school to employment path.  Today should go fine too, even though the Monmouth College rep is new.  I will spend a few minutes trying to explain to students the whole "sticker price" thing and why sticker price shouldn't be the initial reason for discounting the path.  And yesterday we got a couple of softball games in at Monmouth-Roseville - the first varsity then fresh-soph afternoon of the season.  I'm pretty sore from that strength training session on Sunday afternoon, so I was very sluggish getting my overweight self around the diamond yesterday.  I had thought maybe about doing some strength training this morning, but I'm going to give myself at least one more recovery day.  I'm headed to ATown today for umpiring...that will be a trip.

The weather forecast is still not looking promising for camping this weekend, which is leaving me mildly irritated.  Sunday is looking great, but Friday's forecast is still calling for thunderstorms, and Saturday morning is calling for snowflakes.  The snowflakes aren't really too much of a concern, we've had a camper out in that situation before...those dang thunderstorms, though, could be a problem.  And it's not the thunderstorms themselves...we've been in the camper in some pretty good storms before, it's just the timing.  I don't really want to be battling the weather when trying to get the camper out of storage and set-up on the site.  It's just no fun getting wet trying to get everything set up.  Plus, on "opening day" we have many items to get out of the house and into the camper...again, rain and wind and thunderstorms don't make that process very fun.

It's still Tuesday...maybe the track of the storm will go south or north or weaken...still too early to make a decision.  I'll just keep monitoring the situation.

Monday, March 27

6:10 a.m. - The sun is up yet, but we may have gotten a little snow last night.  Regardless of that, the weather forecast is not looking promising for this weekend and camping.  Accuweather is calling for a "significant weather outbreak"...geez.  If that's the case, I'll bite the bullet, consider my $48 a donation to Loud Thunder, and keep the Eagle in storage.

Yesterday was a day that featured the the Southwell grandchildren, good exercise, and basketball viewing.  For my exercise I actually did a little research and thinking and planning and notetaking on developing some type of strength training regimen.  I tried out some exercises and determined some sets and reps and gave it a whirl.  I'm pretty dang sore today, but I feel good about the effort.  After that...which was just pretty simple stuff in the basement...I went out to Loud Thunder for a walk.  It was nice to be outside even if the weather wasn't real pretty.  The snow is gone, but everything is very mushy.  The staff at Loud Thunder has worked on clearing a lot of brush from areas near the roads into the campgrounds...the effect is to have the area look a lot more opened up.

I then came home and spent some more time with Tucker and Rosie and then after Amber took them home, I watched some basketball.  The men's final four is just crazy....only one power five team.  And then I watched the Iowa women play and win a trip to the women's final four.  The women's game is a lot of whistles...takes forever.  I guess when I'm officiating junior high and high school girls and feel like there are a lot of whistles, the same thing continues into college.

Today at school we are back into the training path series.  And today, we hear from James Puckett of General Grind, who will speak to us about school to employment path.  This is an important presentation, but many students won't get the connection to their lives, so I will have to try to help them along.  This is a little bit of a short week because Mrs. Bohnsack is with students on Thursday, and we have a half day on Friday.  Tuesday features Monmouth College, and Wednesday features the NAVY.  It should be a good week at school - now if I can just get the dang weather to cooperate.

I'm supposed to umpire in Monmouth today...I don't think there was near as much snow there, so maybe we'll get in a game.  Accuweather says 50 degrees with partial sunshine...that could work.

Sunday, March 26

7:19 a.m. - I just learned that the Southwell grandchildren will be with us today, so I'm glad I got all those training path worksheets scored and entered yesterday.  I watched basketball last night...that didn't go so well...my Gonzaga team was pounded by UConn.  Now who to route for?  I suppose I will be like everyone else and route for the Florida Atlantic Owls.  For a team that previously had never won an NCAA tournament game, going to the Final Four is an awesome story.

There is still a lot of snow on the ground, but I'm not sure how much snow, if any, there was in Monmouth, so maybe we'll still get a game in tomorrow.  After that, I'm supposed to be at A-Town, so maybe just maybe I'll get that game in too.

I'm not sure how today goes, but that's okay...there isn't anything to do outside; that's for sure.  I've got my schoolwork done.  I'm assuming we are not going to church.  Maybe I should exercise a little this morning before the guests arrive.

11:48 a.m. update - The Southwell grandchildren arrived around 8 a.m. this morning.  Right now, Gigi and Tucker went grocery shopping, so I'm home with a napping Rosalea - she's napping, and I'm standing guard ready to serve lunch when she wakes up.  I didn't attend church service; I haven't yet exercised.  It's mostly been little chores around the house and/or playing or reading with the kids.  I did a little reading for myself, and I am listening to more episodes of my intermittent fasting guy.  I'm also concentrating on drinking a lot of fluids...coffee, tea, water.  I did include a little honey with one cup of coffee and one cup of tea, and I only had one cup of coffee with caffeine.  Maybe later today I can somehow get in some exercise...I also have to figure out something for strength training....maybe I just need to pick three exercises...I could do bench press and dead lift and squats with military press.  Maybe if I just stuck with those exercises for now and see how that goes.  And maybe I focus on Monday, Wednesday, Friday...for those three lifts and record my progress/achievement.  Then on other days, I try to do some type of cardio.

Saturday, March 25

7:57 a.m. - We are currently under a winter storm warning here in beautiful Edgington.  I went out to fill the birdfeeder, and my guess is that there are at least six inches of snow on the ground.  Holy spring weather batman!

Yesterday went fine...well except going to Bally's and not winning any money on the slots.  The buffet was good, though!  Plus, I enjoyed watching basketball after we got home.

Today was supposed to be a double header at Alleman...not happening.  I will probably spend the morning shoveling the driveway....on March 25!  I guess the good news is that we aren't camping this weekend...but next weekend I have reservations at Loud Thunder...because it's supposed to be Spring!

So I think I will exercise, grade papers, maybe read my book...and watch some basketball.  The Gonzaga Bulldogs are still in it, so I'll route for them.

10:44 a.m. update...I shoveled the driveway...man, that was a lot of snow...had to be 6-8 inches of wet, heavy snow.  I'm now on the computer (obviously), and I'm writing out some checks for beginning of the month bills.  Plus I decided I need to get my ass going on getting healthier and losing weight.  I decided to purchase an app to see if it would help me.

Friday, March 24

6:10 a.m. - Yesterday....another rep...another cancelled softball game...time with grandchildren after school....watching basketball.  The reps yesterday were really good...the rep that talks to students about apprenticeships brought with him a recent Rockridge grad who is a third year apprentice.  It's always better to get this sort of perspective with the students.  I did get a chance to watch some good basketball games last night...Gonzaga won somehow, which was nice to see.

Today, the only difference from yesterday is that I don't have a softball game scheduled.  If I did, my guess would be it would be cancelled.  The forecast is calling for snow showers tomorrow, so I'm guessing that double header I'm supposed to have at Alleman will not be played.  I'm not a big fan of umpiring in snow.  There have been a few occasions over my career of experiences where there has been snow flurries...not a fan at all.

I'm holding out hope about camping next weekend, but the forecast doesn't look great.

Thursday, March 23

6:00 a.m. - Garbage day is today...yes, it's every Thursday, but last week on Spring Break I forgot.  So today, it's really important to get the garbage out on the curb.  The rest of today....another presenter....a scheduled softball game at Orion that will probably be canceled...and I don't know about the evening.

We did get in a softball game yesterday at Monmouth-Roseville.  It was one game, the score was 21-3, and it wasn't that close.  Yesterday's presenter at school was not good...but that happens.  Information was good for many students...the presentation itself was weak.

Wednesday, March 22

5:57 a.m. - Yesterday was pretty much like Monday.  The rep from Morrison Tech was good, and then my softball game at Mercer County was canceled...softball canceled again.  I went with Amber to the Harrisons to sit with the grandchildren while their mom and dad went to a kindergarten parent meeting.  One thing I did complete yesterday was to reserve a campsite at Loud Thunder for the weekend of March 31.

Today...another rep...another potential softball game - this time at Monmouth-Roseville.

Tuesday, March 21

5:43 a.m. - Yesterday arrived and went.  The presenter from MTI was fine...Lila helping me out with the "bulletin board" was great.  The only thing I really didn't get done was scoring those assignments from the MTI assignments.  I got home last night after the softball game at Sherrard getting postponed, and I walked for about thirty minutes on the treadmill, watched a little television, and then went to bed early.  And I actually slept pretty well last night.

Today's weather is forecasted to include rain, so I doubt there will be softball again today.  Today's presenter should be solid again today, so maybe I'll get some more assignments scored than yesterday.

On domestic news....former President Trump has reported that he will be arrested today.  If that's true, events that occur as a result will be interesting.  The guy has lawsuits at virtually every level of government....the money he's pouring out in legal fees has to be enormous.  And yet according to his supporters all of his legal problems are politically motivated....his favorite term - "a witch hunt".  Ugh.

Monday, March 20

6:29 a.m. - Yesterday Amber and I went to church service, and then we stopped at my parents' to visit a little while with them and Darren.  Then we went back home, and I watched some basketball.  After that, we took a drive to pick up the granddogs to dogsit for the afternoon, but before that we stopped back at my parents and paid a visit to the camper in storage to check on it.  We couldn't turn anything on because the battery isn't hooked up, but with the flashlight apps on our phones it appeared that everything was okay...no visible damage of a any critters.  After we got back home, I watched basketball all day and late into the night.  There were some really good games.  The granddaughters Brinley and Brooklyn are back on top in first place in the NCAA bracket pool at school.  47 brackets and their bracket is leading - so much for knowledge of basketball teams...just go with favorite mascots!

Today, we are back to school.  Today, I'm also back to the softball diamond at Sherrard.  The good news is that the temps will be warmer than all of last week.  The bad news is that the temps will still be in the low 50's.  I guess the first softball day had to get here sooner or later.

Today is also the start of our training path presenter series.  I'm not in front of the students much at all, but it sure is a lot of work for me.

Sunday, March 19

7:47 a.m. - Today marks the end of Spring Break 22-23

Good Things
- trip to Dubuque last weekend with officiating buddies
- opportunity to get to used to time change
- opportunity to watch a lot of NCAA tournament
- visited with Chase and Carmen, face timed Cole and visited with mom and dad a few times
- started reading a new book
- went to Rock-n-Roll Bingo with officiating buddies
- I don't think I overspent money over the week-long break.
- paid off the loan on the truck
Bad Things
- didn't exercise enough
- ate too much food and drank too many beverages
- the weather was terrible, so I didn't get outside much (including breaking out the camper)

I did like being with friends last night at that Rock-n-Roll Bingo event for the softball team.  I didn't like seeing all the money being spent to support the softball team.  I realize that the softball program is now a powerhouse; I realize that money is needed because the school district nor the booster club can apparently offer enough. I just am not comfortable with the level of support this program and other extra-curricular programs receive in finances when the textbooks I have for my English III course are ancient...when academics seem to be relatively unimportant...when attendance at school seems optional at best with most students and families...when school board members are running campaigns based on bathrooms, masks, and CRT issues.  Attending that event is fun with friends, but it also seems to be a reminder that we have our priorities all out of whack.

Yesterday, I did work to exhaust myself with some exercise.  I didn't go run the St. Patricks Day run in Davenport - a 5K.  I did jog a total of 3.1 miles on the treadmill in the basement.  I'm too fat to be doing that, so my knees do hurt today, but I was also proud of myself for finally getting some exercise.

I'm not sure what today brings.  I'd like to watch some more 2nd round NCAA basketball.  I'd like to get a at least a little exercise in.  I'd like to go visit with Darren a little before he returns back to his home in Missouri.

Things to do for school

  • videotape Monday's presentation and post on Google Classroom
  • score and enter Monday's presentation forms
  • post lesson plans for Tue, Wed, Thurs, Fri next week
  • send presenter confirmation for 2nd week
  • check into costs of Fahrenheit 451 graphic novels
  • work on research paper prompt
    • Write an argument in which you select an historical figure you have encountered so far in English III or U.S. History that would prove to be an effective leader for the United States in 2023. In your argument include research of relevant background information of your selected individual, as well as her/his effective leadership traits (and if you believe those traits would translate to today's modern challenges).
