5:40 a.m. - We made it through another long week.  Yesterday was activity day - survived it.  Then it was professional development time - survived it.  Then it was officiate junior high girls basketball - survived it.  Between activity day and professional development, I got the Eagle all hooked up and ready to go.  Within basketball officiating, I got to spend some time with Marcus.  So when you have lemons, there is always room for a little lemonade.  

Today the day will be a little long.  We need to practice some speeches for first period public speaking, and then we need to watch an example video of a speech and score it with the English III courses.  And then I need to supervise decorating for the dance in the north gym during seventh period.

Before I leave for work, I'm going to try to have everything loaded up for my camping weekend - clothes, and food items we are taking, and any other necessary stuff.  And if I forget something, we won't be very far away.  I just want to get to my chair near a warm fire on a cool fall night with a beverage in my hand - experiencing the simple life at a campground!

5:54 a.m. - I heard from Chase yesterday...something about walking/longboarding to Sherrard and trying to help out a friend with bail money.  Then I get a youtube video from him last night.  He uses videos to try to communicate with me, but I struggle to fully understand most of them.  And he fluctuates from "screw the world" to "I need to change my life".  And most of us have those feelings from time-to-time.  The difficulty is spending most of your time saying "screw the world" and too little time on "I need to change my life."  When there is too much time "screwing the world", there aren't many resources and options left to make "changes".  So for most of us, we have to live more of a balanced life.  We have to work, even though we'd really rather do something else.  We have to complete tasks we really don't want to do, even though we would rather only do the fun stuff.  It's just the way it is.  And it's possible to not dwell on the "not fun stuff" to save up energy and enthusiasm for the fun stuff.  Make the best of the stuff that's not so fun and then have fun with the fun stuff.  Maybe it's called "growing up".

Today is activity day...not the fun stuff.  I want students to have fun, but I don't have the appreciation or patience for the students that just want to be jackwagons.  After "jackwagon day", we have an in-service....ALSO NOT FUN.  In fact, most of the time in-service is excruciating.  But then...I get to have fun!  I get to officiate basketball with Marcus, who I haven't hung out with in awhile.  And then I get to look forward to tomorrow and tomorrow evening, which is getting the camper out to West Lake.  Last night after junior high volleyball (not fun), I picked up some firewood and lined the truck up with the camper.  Doing those things last night will save me a little time after school tomorrow.

Wednesday, September 28

5:59 a.m. - I just heard the words "picture perfect weather weekend" on the forecast today.  And with that in mind, it's time to get the camper out for this weekend!  Today after the junior high volleyball game at Washington, I'm coming back to hook up the rig and lightly pack some clothes and food items.  I'm not going to worry about packing a lot.  I just want to get to the campground and figure things out from there.

Yesterday went fine.  I tried once again to motivate the students...many of them once again wasted time and didn't use me as a resource for assistance.  The volleyball match at Mercer County went okay too.  I worked with a veteran official, and it was fun to watch him work.

Today...it's Free Read Wednesday, which is always a good thing.

6:03 a.m. - Yesterday went okay...as expected, my attempt to really prepare students for the little upcoming speech activity was met with lukewarm responses from most of the students.  The day went fine, though.  Last night I worked with a new official at Mercer County Junior High.  He did fine, and he'll be okay if he sticks with it.  He just doesn't have enough experience yet.  Then I got a message to switch sites for volleyball tonight.  I really don't care....Mercer County or Erie...doesn't really matter...I just need the two schools and my assignor to be okay with the switch, and I don't think it's my job to check with all of those folks.

The weather is still looking good for this weekend...I'm hoping to get the camper out somewhere.

Today the dress up day is country club versus country.  I think I will go with the country look.  

The temperature is the coldest of the year so far.  On my morning walk I'm going to need an extra layer, a hat, and maybe even some gloves.

September 26, 2022 - Happy Birthday Carmen!

6:18 a.m. - It's Carmen's birthday today.  We had a nice visit with Carmen and Tyler spending the night with us Saturday.  I hope she has a nice day today.  

This week is going to be another long one, but it's also going to be a weird one.  First, it's homecoming week, which is usually a pain in the rear.  Next, I've got a full week of officiating, but I don't have my regular volleyball partner all week.  In fact, I have four different partners, but at least I'm with Marcus on Thursday.  

And the weather is still forecasted to look very good this weekend, which means I really need to get the camper out somewhere.

At school, this is going to be a "trial week"...we won't have any school on Thursday due to activity day, and I'm throwing the students' first speech presentation activity at them, which means I'll give them all the information and time they need to do a good job, but many of them won't listen and won't utilize time effectively. 

Yesterday, we ended up going to church service, and I got in a walk with Sophie.  I also watched the Bears win and between the Bears game and more football later on, Amber and I started putting away some of the pool furniture...a job I normally do all by myself when we winterize the pool.

Sunday, September 25

6:51 a.m. - After Tucker and Rosie left, I mowed the yard.  A little later in the day, Carmen and Tyler arrived, and we decided to go to Golden Corral for supper.  We picked up Mom at her house on the way, and we had a nice dinner - I hadn't been there for awhile.  After returning home, we watch Top Gun Maverick and then went to bed.

Today Carmen and Tyler will head to their church service in Viola, and I think Amber and I are heading to our service in Reynolds.  I'd really like to get the pool cleaned today, but it's supposed to get windy, so I may not get that done.  Other than that, I'd like to get in some exercise, and I need to enter some scores for schoolwork.  Today should be a pretty simple, quiet day.

Saturday, September 24

8:53 a.m. - Last night Tucker and Rosie spent the night with us.  I watched Rockridge beat Monmouth-Roseville and then turned in for bed.  For supper, Amber picked up one of those brisket pizzas from Casey's, but I wasn't a big fan.  For me, it was less like barbecue and more like too sweet of barbecue sauce.  This morning I was in charge of letting Kourtney's dogs out, and now I'm just hanging out around the house...not really what I want to do with a Saturday morning usually what happens with grandchildren Saturday mornings.  The weather, though, isn't really cooperating, so it's not like it's a nice day outside.  

Carmen and Tyler are arriving sometime today.  I'm trying to figure out what to do for supper for them.  They may just want to stay inside and stay warm and eat here.  Apparently they stayed in a tent last night, and it was cold.  I'm glad I wasn't in a tent.  And then tomorrow night they are going to Olive Garden with Carmen's mom.  So I may just pick up some Grinder's spaghetti and garlic bread and have us eat here in the warmth of the house.

Looking to next week...looks like another long week, and I'm pretty determined to get the camper out somewhere next weekend.  The extended forecast for next weekend looks beautiful, but it's way too soon to have any confidence in that prediction.

Friday, September 23

5:54 a.m. - It's the first full day of Fall, and the temps feel like it.  It's chilly...may throw on some sweat pants for the morning walk.  Last night's junior high girls basketball games at Knoxville were brutal.  Combined scores of the two games, Knoxville 96, AlWood 7.  In the seventh grade game, most of the AlWood girls had never played basketball in a game.  In the eighth grade game, the AlWood girls were out of control to the point that the first quarter took 37 minutes - I even called an intentional foul.  It was a tough way and a long drive to make $75.  And I would still rather do that than officiate volleyball.

This has been another long week, but it is Friday.  Unfortunately I don't get my prep period today as apparently we can't find subs, so I have to supervise Ms. Kapraun's class fifth period.  I'll make sure to take my book.  Fortunately, I caught up on my grading activities yesterday, so I should be able to get through the day without too much difficulty.

6:10 a.m. - It's going to be a short post.  Brooklyn Rae just woke up and is with me now.  Yesterday went fine.  The first basketball game was okay.  Today the students will be working while I'm circulating.  We'll see how it goes.

3:02 p.m. update - Today has been a productive one.  I really like the additional time I have during the day to do a better job with the courses and students I'm working with.  After school I'm off to Knoxville for another junior high girls' basketball game.  The good news is that I still have the same partner as last night, so that's good.

Wednesday, September 21

5:58 a.m. - Yesterday was a weird day.  I didn't go to work because I had an eye appointment.  I tried to get some things done before the appointment, with I got accomplished.  Then they eye appointment took forever.  I have allergies, an infection in my eyes, and my right eye showed signs of weakening.  So now I have eye drops for the infection, continued eye drops for pressure, and I have to go back in six months instead of a year.  Good times.

After the eye appointment and drops pick up, I came back home and looked at test results from school.  I then got those recorded.  I would say the results came back as expected.  Last night's volleyball at Erie went fine.  I'm getting more comfortable with officiating volleyball.

I'm switching gears, though, and officiating basketball today.  I thought I was going to Galesburg, but I guess I'm going to Orion.  That's good news.  I'm excited about starting the long, long basketball season.  While I'm losing more of a step each season, it's still my favorite.

Tuesday, September 20

6:53 a.m. - Today I'm not going to school, as I have an eye appointment at 10:30 a.m. I picked a good day because temps are supposed to be in the 90's.  Yikes!  I had already planned on working on the pool today after my appointment, so it will be a good day to do that.  A part of that process will be to get some chlorine, which I plan to do when I go to the eye appointment.  I may have to stop at the casino for a bit and have a little fun too on my day off instead of just an appointment and working on the pool.  I guess the timing of the eye appointment is good too since I've got something wrong with my eye...allergies, pink eye, infection...something is in there.

Yesterday was okay for a Monday.  Our volleyball match last night was lopsided, so it wasn't much trouble.  Today is going to be different...we have two teams that aren't very good.  That usually translates into a long match.

Monday, September 19

5:56 a.m. - No, the Bears didn't beat the Packers last night.  It wasn't a total domination, so the game was at least worthy to watch.  This morning there is no news on because of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.  I've been a little under the weather this weekend...seems like some sort of bad cold or allergies or something.  My eyes are even itchy and watery.  The only thing I can think of is that I was around two new dogs, so maybe I was allergic to those dogs?  It seems odd, and I had started to develop a sore throat last week.  My guess is that it's just a bad cold.  I am feeling a little better this morning.  

This is going to be yet another long week, but the good news is that officiating isn't all volleyball.  I get to mix in a little junior high girls basketball.  That will good for me to get up and down the court a little.  I tried to go to the school yesterday and get up and down the court...man I'm heavy and slow.  I've been trying to get in walks in the morning, and I'm going to continue to do that.  It's hell to get older.  Yesterday, I was able to also get a couple of things done - got to Burke's to pick up my shin guards and chest protector, got to church service, and got to the farm to visit with Mom and Darren and Dad.  Then I came home and basically slogged on the couch and tried to get over this cold.

Sunday, September 18

7:37 a.m. - Yesterday was AWESOME.  I'm not sure I can remember all the things that were accomplished, but I'll try.  I got some exercise, even though I haven't weighed myself yet this morning.  I thought I was going to go in town and get a haircut and buy a new mower.  Instead, Kenz cut my hair at home, and Jack allowed me to try out a mower he had worked on.  The haircut looks great, and the yard does too.  Next, we went to Tucker's soccer game. We loaded up Karrigan and Luke and watch for the most part in the rain.  Tucker isn't taking to soccer so much right now.  We returned home and played with the Harrison kids, and I watched Notre Dame try unsuccessfully to lose, and after that Amber and I went to the Gosneys and watched Iowa play Nevada.  I got to see Rick and Chris, my brother Darren, and Greg and Georgia...good times chatting with old friends.  That was a good day.  Bring on today!

Saturday, September 17

6:24 a.m. - We went to the football game last night; well, we went to half.  By halftime, the game was pretty much over, so I went and talk to my friend Tad who was officiating, and then Amber and I walked home.  It was nice to go to a game and see everyone and be there.  I was able to mow most of the yard yesterday.  I gave up on the push mower.  I'm getting rid of that thing....it's too much of a pain in the butt.     

Today seems like the day is going to be busy.  The Harrisons are going to be here.  We have Tucker's soccer game to go to.  I need to purchase a push mower.  The weather forecast is calling for potential thunderstorms this afternoon through the rest of the weekend.  My brother is in town, and apparently Greg, he, and I may be meeting up somewhere.  Basically, I think to day is a "roll with it" day.  I am going to get out this morning and get in a nice walk just to get in some exercise.  Tomorrow, I'll focus on getting some school work done.
