1-11-2021 7th period

I had to laugh at Logan Watson 4th period because he adequately and affectionately started his blog with something to the effect of we thought 2020 was behind us and could get worse and then last Wednesday happened.  I think I'm with him and the camp that legitimately was relieved to put 2020 behind us - not that I though magically at the ball drop that the cloud of the pandemic would disappear, President Trump would hear angels singing and commit to a peaceful transition of power, the State of Illinois would declare and agreement with IDPH and IHSA and return extra curricular activities, and everything else that screwed up 2020 would automatically be corrected. No, I wasn't thinking that would happen, but like Mr. Watson eloquently expressed, I really didn't want 2021 to start off with things getting worse, and a violent and destructive event at the Capitol does seem to qualify for that.

I also mentioned 4th period that one of the disheartening things was just the memory I had two years ago of chaperoning my first trip to D.C. and really honestly being so thrilled that any U.S. citizen could be on the grounds of our country's capitol...that we lived in a country that allowed that, and by passing through some screening security, we could view the halls and statues and rooms and floors of all that history.  And now what a shame it will be if the grounds of the capitol and perhaps the Supreme Court too will have to be fenced in and guarded like the White House.  I wouldn't blame our country if we did that, but it would be depressing that the level of the security would have to be upgraded to remove that feeling of the People's House.  Perhaps not, but my guess is that the next trip to D.C. will feature more security around the perimeter.
