5:04 a.m. - One parent-teacher conference evening down, and one to go. Yesterday went according to plan. We didn't get many presentations done in any of the class periods, but that was to be expected. And we won't get them all done today, so we'll have to finish them up on Monday. All that's okay...it's good for the students to make a presentation.
Today, then, should be much the same. I am participating in that Facilitation Team meeting tonight. That event could be interesting. There are more people on the team than I expected now that I see all the seats that are in the library. It's not a bad thing to have a lot of people involved, but often times too many people make reaching a consensus all the more challenging.
In sad news, I heard last night the Coach Bob Knight passed away. He was a successful but controversial coach that I grew up idolizing. I always felt like he understood the game better than most coaches, and he kept the game simple. I actually rode in a car with him when I worked as a part-time sports correspondent with the Quad City Times. I was invited to ride with him and another reporter who was just driving him out to the Davenport Airport. Coach Knight treated me with great respect and talked with me as if I was someone he knew and was interested in. I didn't feel uncomfortable around him at all. I also attended a basketball clinic at the University of Indiana when I was a young coach, and it was awesome. I learned so much and enjoyed being in the Assembly Hall on the campus. And I read books written about him - with the good and the bad stuff. And I watched documentaries about him as well. He was definitely "old school", and "old school" didn't fit with some players then, and it doesn't fit with some players now. The news didn't list the cause of death, but memorials are asked to be donated to an Alzheimer's cause. I shook my head at that one...I'm not sure Coach Knight would have handled that disease all that well. He's a legend, though, from my basketball days, and that's assign that I'm getting older! :)
One last thing...I watched Fox News last night - Sean Hannity. He paraded in a one MAGA Republican after another, including the new Speaker of the House. This was after two veteran Republican representatives declared they won't seek reelection. The show was a continuous stream of crud and mud slinging and sensationalism...mostly old white wealthy guys.... It's no wonder why the divide among people and the views grows more and more intense. It's that kind of broadcast that just fans flames, and Hannity does it all for the money, and he must make a lot of money. It was horrible. The big thing that was pushed time and time again was the border with Mexico. That I was used to, but then there was a segment of attempting to prove that President Biden's mind is too old....complete with music and special effects....it's the kind of stuff that used to get no coverage before the advent of the internet, and now that kind of garbage has made it's way to late night cable entertainment commentary on news. Because that's what Fox News is...is entertainment commentary on news items, which is vastly different than news reporting. It's like watching watching the days of Jerry Springer or Heraldo Rivera...it's design is to upset people and then see what happens in order to generate even more interest to generate even more audience.
