5:47 a.m. - Our varsity volleyball match last night was a 3-set close one, which means it wasn't an early night getting home.  Then on my way home, I received a call from Cole, so it was nice to hear from him.  

Today, the weather guy on KWQC said tomorrow is meteorological fall.  That has a nice sound to it even though temps are going to feel more like summer the rest of the week.  I've got tonight off, and I think I will pack the camper with my clothes to get ready for the upcoming camping weekend at Scott County Park.  I may also mow the yard and/or get the ditch weed wacked.  Oh, and I would really like to spray weeds too.

At school, it's FRW, and I would like to get the remaining pre-assessment essays scored.

Tuesday, August 30

5:47 a.m. - Well, apparently I was wrong about a couple of things - yesterday wasn't my last junior high softball game, and today isn't the first check of the new contract.  I got a call yesterday to work a junior high softball regional on Sept. 10, and Amber told me that the next paycheck is on the new contract.  

The weather forecast looks to be better for today than yesterday, but the current forecast has temps warming up this weekend - not exactly what I was look for when we are camping at Scott County Park, but as long as temps cool down overnight, then it will still be fun to do some camping.

Today at school looks to be okay.  The Public Speaking class will be preparing for an upcoming quiz, and the English III sections have one more little "beginning of the year" thing to complete, which is the SAT reading pre-assessment.  I still need to score some pre-assessment essays, but I'm hoping to get that done today.  I finished the biggest section yesterday, and the essays were pretty typical compared to previous years.

5:37 a.m. - Well, I'm worried for this weekend.  The forecast is for beautiful weather all week and weekend.  So why am I worried?  The forecast for this past weekend was a rainout beginning Saturday night into this morning, and we maybe saw a few drops.  The temp and humidity are sure high right now!  I'm definitely wearing shorts today, and I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with a 1:30 dismissal due to the heat.

Later today I'm supposed to have a junior high softball game at Mercer County.  There are storms forecasted for today, but they are supposed to stay north.  Then again, we were supposed to have rain all weekend.  I guess we'll just see what Mother Nature throws at us.

I think pay day is tomorrow, and I think this should be the first paycheck under the new contract.  I'm not expecting a "windfall" of new money, but I'm interested to see how much of a difference there will be and if other teachers will notice a change as well.

The best news is that we are looking at a camping weekend!  Scott County Park or bust!  Let's get through this week and get in an extended holiday weekend in the Eagle...a little time to rest, relax, connect, and just enjoy a little quiet time!

Sunday, August 28

9:08 a.m.- This is a mid-morning blog entry today.  The six grandchildren and their moms were here, after the Harrison kids spent the night.  We played and read books and ate breakfast while Kenz worked on Kourtney's and Ava's hair.  Now I have a little time before Amber and I head to church service.  I think today the weather is still supposed to be rainy, but now it sounds like it's going to arrive a little later than first expected.  I'm still glad I got the yard mowed yesterday.  Maybe after church service I'll get a haircut.  I also need to replace a doorknob to the door that goes to the basement - that's a good rainy day job.  I could score some essays, but I'd have to muster up some additional brain energy for that.  I think sometime today I'll get those bills written out and mailed off.  It may be a nap day too and maybe some football viewing.

3:08 update - We did go to church service, and I did go to Great Clips for a trim.  I also came home and replaced that doorknob and then Sophie took me for a walk.  Oh, and I also got the bills written out and mailed out....now...about that nap.  And it's hardly rained at all but perhaps its even later to arrive.

10:01 update - Amber and I grilled some hamburgers for supper, and we finished season four of Stranger Things on Netflix.  Unfortunately, these types of "series" always end up being more like a soap opera after the first season.  The Southwells visited, and I helped Amber install a couple of accessories on her e-bike.  Then the night ended with a call from Mercer County Jail.  That means Chase is likely in jail again.  I didn't accept the call, and I'll likely find out more tomorrow.  I'm not even going to attempt to tell Carmen or Cole.  Let them have a good night sleep; no sense having them unable to sleep in worry like I will be now.  I just wish there was something I could do.

6:25 a.m. - The casino wasn't kind to me yesterday, but Amber won a little, and we had a nice buffet meal together and enjoyed being out together.  That's worth the money I lost.  Today I'm going to get to see Greg, even though we will both be working on moving Bill's stuff to Aledo.  It will be good to see him and talk with him.  Then later on we are attending a birthday party for Rosie at the Legion.  Tomorrow is still being forecast to rain all day, so I might be indoors doing some reading or maybe scoring some essays.

12:37 update - It's not even 1 p.m., and Bill's furniture is moved, I had a chance to spend some time with Greg, I mowed the yard, and I did a quick rough job on cleaning the pool.  I wish I could get some Round-Up sprayed, but if it's going to rain all day tomorrow, that would be unwise.

5:43 a.m. - Geez it's been a long week, but Friday is here, and today shouldn't be a rough one.  I've been able to accomplish a lot in the classroom, so that's good.  I also had some volleyball officiating to start that season as well.  Today after school I have a "thing" that shouldn't take very long, and then maybe Amber and I will head out somewhere for dinner.  Tomorrow will be a little busy; I'm helping move my uncle to a nursing home residency in Aledo, and then later in the afternoon there is a birthday party for Rosalea.  Sunday the weather is supposed to be not so good, so I don't know if I'll get the yard mowed or not.  I'd just like today to breeze by quietly and quickly.

6:27 a.m. - I am hurting this morning.  I've probably said it before, but there is no reason that a junior high softball game should be allowed to go more than two hours.  Last night was a long night.  I didn't get home until 8:30, and it felt like I called a billion pitches.  Tonight it's back to Cambridge, but I'm officiating volleyball this time.  It's been a long week, and Friday isn't until tomorrow.  I don't think I'm going to get any exercise this morning, but I do need to get the garbage and recycle out.

Wednesday, August 24

5:58 s.m. - Yesterday a contractor came to fix the pool heater...apparently a fuse was bad.  Thank you Sentry Pool for previously sending out two techs who apparently didn't know what they were doing and costing us a total of $400 for parts we didn't need and a service call that didn't help solve the problem.  Geez.  

The beginning to the school year continues to go well.  I'm getting a lot of things completed, and I'm ahead of last year's lesson plans.  Last year we were still in masks and taking breaks outside and teaching was still a mess.  This year there are definitely fewer distractions.  Today is the first Free Read Wednesday, and I'm looking forward to that.  57% of the students in English III reported that they did not read even one book over the summer.  It's tough to have good SAT scores when students are not readers.

Last night, Braeden and I had our first volleyball assignment.  United Township still isn't very good.  They were beaten badly by Sterling Newman.  I had the R1 position for the varsity match.  Admittedly it was a little nerve wracking starting the volleyball season because I'm not as comfortable with that sport as I am with softball or basketball.  I wish I "saw" the game a little more in depth to have a better understanding of player alignments.   

Today it's back to junior high softball after school...heading to Cambridge.  One more softball game next week, and the softball equipment can go to the dry cleaners for end of the season cleaning.

Tuesday, August 23

5:39 a.m. - I survived another open house night last night.  We did it a little differently this year - hosted a genuine open house versus the scheduled presentation mode like the previous years.  The turnout wasn't great; I maybe saw 15-20 parents.  On the other hand, parents were able to tour the renovated classrooms in my wing and also meet faces with names, and those things are important too.  Plus, I took the opportunity to get things done that were on my list.  I think I've got the classroom pretty close to being "ready".  The custodial/maintenance folks still need to install some things, but the wall being removed just provides a bit more of a relaxing environment.  Tonight, the volleyball officiating season begins - I'm at United Township with Braeden.  I'm not suggesting I'm thrilled, but I'm a whole lot less nervous that I was when I started out.

I haven't been as good as monitoring my meals and weight in recent posts - 240.4.  I'd really like to get to 200, but "liking" doesn't really get  my body weight there.

5:29 a.m. - Life starts to get busier this week; I'm glad I was able to mow the yard yesterday.  Tonight we have an open house event at school.  This is not a big deal, except I really don't want to be there until 8:30 at night.  It's nice to give parents and guardians an opportunity to visit, especially families that are new to the district.  And it's also nice for families to be able to see the renovated sections of the building.  

After tonight, it's a "full week".  I'm working two volleyball matches, and I'm working a junior high softball game - welcome to the 2022-23 school year.

Sunday, August 21

7:23 a.m. - Yesterday was a lot of sitting.  I went to the volleyball clinic in the morning at Galesburg High School, and then drove back home.  I had some lunch, took a cat nap, and then drove Amber and her parents back to Galesburg for the wedding and reception in East Galesburg.  We got home around 8:30 p.m., and then I watched a little television and went to bed.  With the off and on storms all day long, it just was sort of a weird weekend day but not bad.

This morning were were maybe going to Loud Thunder to take a boat ride and do some fishing.  Now, though, it's really foggy.  If we don't go fishing, we are headed to church.  The weather is supposed to be sunny today, so maybe I'll get a chance to mow the yard.  I could start taking a look at some student profiles too.

4:54 update - We went fishing for a couple of hours...caught a tiny bluegill and let Tucker real it in, so it was a big deal.  Then I went and did some shopping...needed to get some things for the classroom and for the camper.  After returning home, I mowed the yard...that was the big accomplishment for the day.  Now we just had some supper, and I don't know if we are going to the casino or just hanging out at home.

Saturday, August 20

6:17 a.m. - Today is going to be busy - volleyball clinic in the morning and wedding and reception in the afternoon.  This isn't exactly the day I would like, but it's raining, and I really don't have anything else to do.  Maybe tomorrow will be an opportunity to do some other things.  

Yesterday after school, Amber and I went and had supper at Rudy's, and then we stopped by Kourtney's house for a visit.  After that we came home, watched an episode of Stranger Things, and then welcomed the Harrison kids for a sleepover night.  Luke waking up at 5:00 a.m. this morning wasn't exactly what I had in mind, but I needed to get going this morning anyway.

Things to do for school

• review student profiles and send a response email
• list for room - new flag and hanging clip, place to hang clock, pencil sharpener installed, two things cut off in northwest corner, shelving and yearbooks returned to closet, some type of small "bulletin board" to tack up items
• get projector straight
• collect journals from students
• update sub folder 
• get tape dispensor, dry erase eraser and spray, and small handheld mirror 
• Aug 25 - Anne speaks with Dual Credit English students
• Aug 26 - volleyball captain interviews - after school 

Things to do

• figure out pool heater problems - make a call to a technician - Amber called
• Iowa volleyball rules meeting and test
• Attempt to complete IHSA volleyball officiating promotion - 9/6-9/13
• pass Part 2 exam
• monitor water damage area in camper....possible restoration companies
• and have brakes inspected and bearings repacked
