Monday, January 31

6:11 a.m - Yesterday, I had conversations with all the Bizarri children, so that was nice.  Chase and I went to look at a car because his car isn't doing so well.  Carmen and Tyler visited for a bit.  Cole and I spoke on the phone.  In addition, I went over to the farm and visited with my Mom and Dad to wish them a happy anniversary.  Finally, I was able to rest the legs and watch another couple of good football games.  I didn't think it would be the Bengals and Rams in the Super Bowl, but that's how it shaped up.

This week's travel to officiate basketball games has only a couple of lengthy drives, so that's an improvement over the last few weeks.  I thought maybe I would get out of that trip to Amboy, but it looks like the big snowstorm that was forecasted last week is going to stay south of us, so I might end up making that trip after all.  

It's presentation day at school, which unfortunately means a lack-luster effort from most students.  I'll try to keep my positive vibes on the students who give a genuine effort and just try not to be too disappointed by the others.  I do need to make some decisions on the next step of coursework.  I need to figure out how I'm going to transition from our work with African slave contributions towards a research paper assignment.

8:27 a.m.  - I survived yesterday's games.  My leg is hurting a little worse, but hopefully a day of rest today will assist with that problem.  It was nice to have a boys night last night.  Boys basketball just is smoother with few whistles.  Today is going to be a hodge-podge day.  I am going to go look at a car with Chase because his isn't doing so well.  Carmen and Tyler might be coming over.  And two big NFL games are on television that I want to watch.

Saturday, January - Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad

6:59 a.m. - It's going to be a long day - 3 games of officiating in Wyoming and Farmington.  I'm not with my regular crew, but I'll still be with a couple of guys I'm familiar with, which is good.  Today is mom and dad's anniversary - at least I'm pretty sure.  Little Tucker is struggling with some kind of bug that is causing a high fever, and it has us a little worried.  Best guess so far is that it's something COVID related that sometimes shows up in little ones.  He's getting his blood drawn again today, and if results aren't good, he's going to need to go to the children's hospital in Peoria, so his condition can be closely monitored.  

Yesterday, school went fine, and last night we had an overtime game at Davenport Central.  Needless to say the home teams wasn't happy with the officiating because they lost.  Thus is the life of an official.

Friday, Jan. 28

6:06 a.m. - Yesterday's professional development I attended was surprisingly refreshing.  The two presenters provided a model for negotiating/problem solving that involved people working together to conduct dialogue and come up with solutions to differences.  The key component was that there was a facilitator/referee that assisted both sides of the differences.  Perhaps you could also call that person a negotiator - someone objective with no interest in the outcome, only interest in helping the two parties avoid negative results.  And of course these two presenters were available to be those individuals - at a cost.  I tried to ask the cost of such a person, but I wasn't given a whole lot of guidance.  I think I upset at least one of the gentleman when I asked.  

Of course the frustrating thing was that this "interest-based bargaining" information is only after we at Rockridge have started traditional based bargaining.  Still, it was nice to know that perhaps some groups some places can actually work together to resolve differences and really gain something positive out of the experience.

Last night's game featured Alleman at Rock Island...school districts in the same city and both girls teams about the same competitive level.  Yes, that means the game was a little "chippy", and the fans were not the most peaceful objective fans on the planet.  We got through it.  On to more action today and tomorrow.  Tonight and tomorrow I have six games total before I get to have a little rest on Sunday.  I'm guessing I'll be taking a couple extra Tylenol doses.

Thursday, Jan. 27

6:26 a.m. - When a teacher is absent from school, there is more work involved than actually being in the classroom.  That situation is not the case today.  By shear dumb luck, today is the day I'm headed to a professional development academy in Atkinson on the same day that the guidance counselor is coming into my classrooms to help students register for courses for the next school year.  So not only am I gaining professional development and getting out of my classroom, there won't be any additional work for me to take care of when I return.  It's a win, win, win!

Last night the game at Clinton was as expected.  At one point in the game, the score was 40-8.  I wasn't working with my regular crew, but the guys I was working with I had worked with before.  In summary, there wasn't much fun, but there wasn't much bad either.

Tonight will be a different story - Rock Island girls at Alleman.  This will be a rivalry; it will be a game both teams believe they can win; and there will likely be a good crowd in the gym.  A bonus is that I am working with Tad Johnson, my former crewmate.  I haven't seen him in awhile, so it will be good to catch up with him.

8:24 a.m. - I slept in until 7:30 today, and it felt nice.  We have a 2-hour late start at school due to the really cold temps.  It's nice for the school district to recognize these conditions and allow the late start.  We still have all the class periods, just shortened, so honestly sometimes it still feels like a regular day.  Tonight I head to Clinton by myself to work a girls varsity game.  Clinton is one of the weaker teams in the conference, but they work hard.  It's probably not going to be much of a game, but I was assigned, and I shall go.

5:58 a.m. -  Whoa, baby it's cold outside!  I thought maybe there would be a late start or even a cancelation, but only Iowa schools and northern Illinois schools are biting on that one.  Last night's games went okay, even though we had one concussion symptoms situation that I had to send a report to the IHSA about when I arrived home.  Yesterday at school we finished up the documentary and started the presentation project where students dig into a slave narrative of their own choice and share information with the class.  It's not a huge assignment; instead, it's a little sharing activity that gets students up in front of others.

Tonight we have Pleasant Valley girls at Assumption, and that should be a pretty good game, I think.

Monday, January 24

6:02 a.m. - Wow, those were a couple of awesome NFL playoff games yesterday.  Today, it's back to the grind and the weather report is saying cold tomorrow morning and really cold Wednesday morning.  I will reiterate again that a school closing day sometime this week would not be disappointing.  This week will darn near get us through January, and that marks the definite downhill slide of the basketball officiating season.  Of course, already the softball season assignments are coming in, but softball is a whole different animal that basketball.  I don't work the weekends, and the travel is a lot less than basketball.  

The assignments for postseason should be coming out soon.  Pairings are going to be announced for girls on February 4th, so officials will likely be assigned the following week.  With that in mind, assignments are still likely a couple of weeks away.

I had a blast this past weekend with the grandchildren.  I know I'm getting older, so keeping up with them doesn't get any easier.  Their laughter and play, though, is just so much fun.  Oh, if we could all keep that kind of fun and joy in our hearts and that level of energy in our bodies!

5:41 a.m. - What a fun day so far!  I played with Brinley and Brooklyn at the Grand Harbor WaterPark in Dubuque in the morning.  Amber and I then played slots at the Diamond Joe Casino.  We then drove home, and I made a big pan of tomato soup.  Then I basically watched football, and now I'm doing a little work before watching more football.  This week is going to be interesting.  I'm working with different partners than most times; I've got a professional development day on the 27th; the weather is supposed to be really cold.  I could go for a school cancellation day.  This weekend went by fast, but it was a good one.

7:16 a.m. - Yesterday went okay.  Our game last night was awful.  I've never seen a weaker high school boys basketball team at Alleman than what I saw last night.  The final score was something like 85-26.  Marcus took us to a bar-and-grill after the game in Sterling called Kelly's.  It was an Irish pub that was known for its Mexican food.  I had a burrito that was the size of an entire plate.  Amber already made her way up to Dubuque, so I am home alone, but I don't have much time this morning.  Shawn is picking me up at 8:30 to go do a couple of lower level games at Riverdale.  Then I'm coming home, packing up, and heading up to Dubuque to be with Amber and the kids and grandkids at an indoor waterpark up there.  So I'm relaxing in quiet this morning before the rest of the day turns quite hectic.

6:17 a.m. - We had a barn-burner of a game last night.  We went overtime and the #1 ranked girls team in 3A almost got beat in overtime.  The crowd was hostile; the pep band was loud; it was great.  Tonight's game won't be as exciting.  Alleman is very weak, and they only have a varsity team - no fresh/soph.  We'll be starting earlier at 6 p.m., which is nice, and the game won't last long.  Today at school should be fine - a little journal writing and continuing in the documentary.  That sounds simple enough.  I did have a lot of students absent yesterday.  I thought maybe we had plateaued with illness, but maybe we didn't.

5:58 a.m. - Yesterday had a bit of a surprise.  Apparently RHS is going to offer a dual credit speech course.  I'm not necessarily opposed to the idea, but you would think that the teachers in the English Department would have known about this new development.  Nope.  We found out on a video right along with the students yesterday.  Sometimes, I just have to shake my brain and keep moving forward.  

The teachers association meeting went well, at least I think so.  I spend about 20 minutes talking about my analysis of the current salary schedule that we have and what I feel the negotiating team needs to consider when it comes to proposing salary schedule changes.  

Last night Shawn and I officiated a freshmen game in Mercer County.  It was nice to have a low-key game close to home, even if it meant 2-man officiating instead of 3.

Today...looking to start the documentary video with students, and I want to get some scores entered into Lumen from yesterday.  Later today, we have a big game to officiate in Galesburg.  It's a girls game featuring Geneseo, and the Leafs are pretty darn good this season.  In fact, I think they are undefeated.  The weather today is pretty dang cold, but it's not cold enough to cancel or postpone school...just need to bundle up.

Wednesday, January 19

6:25 a.m. - And sometimes "things" just work out.  Last night we took the long drive to Cuba to officiate Illini Central against North Fulton.  When we walked on the court at 6 p.m. expecting a fresh-soph game, there were varsity teams, and Illini Central only had five girls.  Then we found out we were only going to have one game, yet we got paid for two.  And North Fulton won in a lopsided game, and we were back in Knoxville having a sandwich well ahead of what we normally experience on that trip.  It's true that some nights are very long, and then sometimes, the nights are short.  Yesterday at school was pretty tame too, as students returned from the long weekend.  Today should also proceed in a pretty tame fashion - a little FRW and discussion over some analysis questions.  Tomorrow I'll start the documentary video, and we'll slide into the weekend.  We just need to survive a little cold weather blast tomorrow, and Saturday after my games I'm headed to Dubuque to enjoy a little indoor waterpark action with all the grandchildren and their mommies and daddies.  Today after school we have an important teachers' association meeting, and then Shawn and I are headed to Mercer County High School for a little freshmen game.

Monday, Jan. 17 - MLK Day

7:31 a.m. - I didn't get a visit to my parents' house yesterday, so I'm headed that way this morning before my game at Wharton Fieldhouse.  Then later I have to go to the school board meeting as part of the teachers' association negotiation team.  I'm not really sure what is going to happen, if anything, but at least tonight will be a start to the contract negotiation process.

Yesterday turned out about what I had expected.  We had the Harrison grandchildren in the morning, and then in the afternoon/evening we had the Southwell grandchildren.  And the entire time we also had the granddog with us, and she's still with us.  It's been a good weekend of reconnecting with the grandchildren and granddog.

2:22 p.m. - An overnight with the Harrison grandchildren was just what the doctor ordered.  Amber and I watched a movie after I had finished reading the book - Dear Evan Hansen.  I liked the book better, but it was interesting to see how the movie was adapted.  Yesterday's game at Galesburg sucked, but we got through it.

Today later the Southwell grandchildren will be arriving.  I'm hoping to relax and watch some NFL wildcard football tonight.  Maybe if there is time, I'll stop at my parents and visit.

Saturday, Jan. 15

8:08 a.m. - I woke up early this morning and thought about what day it was, and then I realized it was Saturday!  I love it when that happens, and I went back to sleep.  It's rare that I sleep in until 7:30, but that's what happened.  We did last all day at school yesterday, but our games at Clinton were cancelled, so Amber and I went to Andalusia and had some supper, played some slots at the Andalusia casino, and came home.  I then watched some Illinois basketball on television, and the Illini beat Michigan.  Now I am mentally preparing myself to shovel the driveway.  Then Shawn and I are going to Galesburg to officiate a sophomore game.  I think the Harrison grandchildren are arriving sometime later today and maybe the Southwell grandchildren too.  And it's a three day weekend!  Whoop Whoop!

6:20 a.m. - I'm predicting an early dismissal day, and I'm predicting our games at Clinton will be postponed.  You heard it here first.  The snowfall is going to get here sooner than later, and we are going to get at least three inches of snow, and instead of teaching and officiating, I'm going to be clearing snow off my driveway and hopefully playing with some grandchildren.  And it's going to be the start of a 3-day weekend!  Whoop Whoop!

Yesterday, we got home late from Sterling, as the fog was terrible, and the game itself between Sterling and Alleman girls wasn't much better.  The school day went fine, and I have some scores to enter from yesterday.

It's pay day today!  The day just got even better!
