2020 - E-Learning - Day 10

11:00 a.m. - Today's weather is wacky...woke up to about three inches of snow on the ground, so this morning's exercise was a walk on the treadmill followed by the regular Wednesday light "at home" lifting routine.  I did watch the first half of the 1983 RHS basketball game versus Orion.  I'm enjoying the trips down memory lane, but it's like a movie you have seen before that has a sad ending - the movie is good, except the ending is hard to watch.  I do watch the games from a different perspective now...I watch the officials, and I watch my performance on a much more objective level than I'm sure I did as a cocky teenager.  I was a really good small school player, but I had more limitations at the time than I either was aware of or didn't want to accept.  I think, though, I can honestly say that I made the most of the talent and abilities I had.  I didn't have the ball-handling and quickness needed to play at the next level...had I had opportunities to play at a bigger school or perhaps had summer AAU opportunities like today's athletes, maybe I would have been a little better, but I still would have been limited.  Watching those game films, though, reinforces in my mind how blessed I was to have the coaching and the teammates around me that made playing the game so much fun and rewarding.  I watch how I play now and see some of the same attributes that I admired so much in players that I coached previously, or players that I see when I'm officiating now.  There are a select few "special players" who deep down in every fiber of their bodies LOVE the game - the whole game.  I was one of those players, and they are few and far between.  At each school I was a head coach, I had a few...maybe three or four at each stop.  I really don't remember where that love came from, and I suppose its environmental and somehow genetic?  What's key is that I really enjoy watching other athletes whose love is something else - baseball, football, softball, track, whatever.

Before my 10:00 a.m. office hour beginning, I also ran that truck spare tire down to Slayden's to get it repaired, and I stopped at Dollar General...stilly no wipes and toilet paper.  Do people really clean that much more often and use toilet paper that much more often now-a-days?

Everyone is waiting for Governor Pritzker's press conference today.  Supposedly there is a component that is going to involve education.  My guess is that he will be issuing an order for the closing of K-12 schools for the rest of the year, which will also cause the IHSA to cancel all Spring sports.  I guess we'll see.

While I'm on this topic, this closure is tough on "SOME" students.  And it's going to be tough on "SOME" parents.  Let me explain.  Above I talked about my love for basketball.  Had this happened to me prior to the start of my senior season in 1983-84, I would have been DEVASTATED!!!  And I know there are some seniors involved in extra-curriculars that likely feel this way, and I feel awful for them.  Plus, there are parents, that were really looking forward to the traditional high school prom, award ceremonies, graduation, and graduation parties that come along with the end of a student's senior year.  It's really a time as a parent to "glow" and be proud of his/her students efforts, and it's a time for the student to be publicly recognized...it just feels good.

That being said...my guess is the vast majority of students and parents aren't really all that upset about the school closure, extra-curricular cancellations, and end-of-the-year events.  For the most part, school and all the other stuff is seen as something that "has to be done"...students and parents go through the motions for some odd reason because they feel like they are supposed to do so.  It just could be that this whole mess may cause folks to get a new perspective and better appreciate all the things that are being lost during this pandemic.  Maybe it will be a reset and afford an opportunity to better appreciate things in the future.
