2020 - E-Learning - Day 20

I've had a troubling day.  I'll rebound.  I'll re-energize.  I'll pick myself back up.  Today, though, is just troubling.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (4/30)
If the federal guidelines to decreasing restrictions includes two weeks of decreased positive cases, then why are many states easing restrictions today when no states have met that criteria?  New CDC guidelines are advising student desks to be 6 feet apart.  Are lockers going to be 6 feet apart?  Are students going to walk 6 feet apart in the hallways? Ugh.

      2020 - E-Learning - Day 19

Yesterday, was a quiet day to finally return to scoring research papers.  I wish I could have more quiet days, but today probably isn't going to be one of them.  We are watching Tucker, and this afternoon I go to my orientation for a part-time job with FedEx Ground.

Since the Covid 10 school closure in mid-March, I've basically had three "new" things interjected into my life.  The first was an increased usage of Google Meets for the e-learning coursework; the second was incorporating nordic walking into my list of exercises that I enjoy; and the third is this hopeful part-time job at FedEx Ground.

Unfortunately, yesterday Amber learned her new teaching schedule for next year, and that's not exactly good news.  The junior high is returning an additional language arts period to the master schedule, which is good.  Instead of hiring a language arts teacher, though, the district is piecing together a language arts teacher by assigning other teachers to literature or writing sections.  So teachers that had previously focused on their area of math, science, and social studies are now picking up a writing and/or literature section.  The district is saving money by essentially absorbing a language arts teacher, and the district will report that it is adding a section of language arts to junior high.  While I have faith in the hearts of the "alternative language arts teachers", I fear that this move will just create turmoil and frustration and confusion among students and staff.  Apparently, anybody can teach language arts in our district.  And while I know that the district will correctly assert that all the "alternative" teachers have proper certifications for language arts instruction, having this situation will not be best for kids, and it will not be best for staff.  Essentially, I fear this move will make teaching English in high school even more challenging.

9:55 p.m. - I had my orientation at FedEx Ground today, and it went fine.  I was by far the oldest, but it was interesting.  We have another orientation evening tomorrow night beginning at 6 p.m., and I will learn more about the job then.  It's weird that I feel nervous, but they are very busy now, so they are talking 4-5 hours every day, Monday through Friday, which is nice.  If I could get 20 hours in a week, that would be about $250 a week, which would be nice.  Plus, one of the lines I heard tonight was that I get paid to get a workout, which is part of the reason I do officiating and umpiring anyway.  Apparently we have to start wearing masks tomorrow, and every shift starts with some stretching and warm-up. Something else they said was that the job is like playing Tetris.  I hope I do okay.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (4/29)
Illinois had the most positive cases reported yet yesterday because more testing is being completed.  More deaths occurred too.  I find myself wondering if limited testing is what the "economic experts" want to see.

          2020 - E-Learning Day 17

Today was a day of fast and furious feedback to students regarding their assignments from last week.  I am so tried from all the reading and typing that I'm going to bed early.  I only got in two exercise sessions, but that's okay.  Amber and I did pick up some groceries at HyVee and dropped something off at her parents.  The COVID numbers improved for a second day in a row!  That's great news.  I did get a message from the IHSA that they weren't refunding all the fees for spring sports officials, and an hour later I got a reminder to renew all my certifications, which was a bit irritating.

              Sunday, April 26

6:19 a.m. - Today the weather temperatures are suppose to be mid-60's with sunny weather.  Today, then, will be mowing the lawn and maybe just maybe the cover of the pool will come off.  This morning's exercise will be stretch, 10-minute abs fix, and either a bike ride or morning walk.

8:02 - What a day!  I got the lawn mowed, the ditch wacked (half of it), and the pool opened and vacuumed.  That's a day.  Now to watch The Last Dance!

                  Saturday, April 25

9:33 a.m. - I'm up-and-running.  I got in a morning stretch routine, and I completed total cardio fix, which humbled me.  I hadn't done one of those for a LONG time, so the combination of light weights and cardio was challenging.  On the other hand, I was encouraged about my knees.  I had worked on stretching those before I went downstairs, so maybe that helped.  I know it sounds terrible, but just attempting to jump off the ground can be painful, and I barely even felt any discomfort.  So now I'm going to tackle some schoolwork.

So some states are easing restrictions of social distancing.  So those states are seeing fewer cases statewide?  I'm under the impression that states aren't really easing the restrictions because they are seeing a downturn in cases; instead, they are feeling the pressure from economic problems and protesters.  So what was the point?  So the coronavirus didn't hit those states as hard as other states, so it's time to "chance it" and do away with the social distancing guidelines or go with a different set, like wearing a mask?  So we're hoping that wearing a mask in public will bend the curve well enough to keep the healthcare system from getting hammered?  Georgia started to open businesses yesterday, and that state's number of cases continues to increase.  So they are basically ignoring the trend and just looking to work through it without overwhelming the healthcare system.

                    2020 - E-Learning - Day 16

4-24 - 10:13 a.m.  The Harrison girls are headed home, and the day begins here at the resort.  Unfortunately (or fortunately), there will be no outdoor activities today, as the weather is pretty crummy.  So it's indoor workout this morning and computer school work today, and there is plenty of it.

6:30 p.m. - I walked a little this morning; walked with Sophie this afternoon; and I might get another walk in tonight before more rain hits.  I also heard back from FedEx Ground, and I have an orientation interview next Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

                    Charter and Magnet Schools

This is the last of "the list" of topics I had previously created before all of this Covid 19 stuff.  I suppose this topic falls into the same category as all the other "alternative" public high school ideas.  Those could be home school, private school, parochial school, academy, and charter and magnet schools.  Are these paths better than public schools?

So here's my answer...find the best fit for the best value for the best training.  Are charter schools and magnet schools better?  Are their teachers better?  Are their administrators better?  Are their classrooms, facilities, and equipment better?  Is the student inspired to do his or her best in that particular environment.  The all have their pros and cons, so get the most pros.

What I don't really like to see is for folks to say their specific choice is the best, and its the best for everyone.  There is NO BEST FOR EVERYONE.  There are aspects of Rockridge that I think could be improved; heck, there are aspects about my teaching and my classroom that I think could be improved.  I truly believe we are a good fit, though, for most of our students.  Now, I will say that our school doesn't do a good enough job at helping students who aren't a good fit.  We don't have strong interventions and we don't make recommendations to find a different path, and part of that situation is because our school receives funding based on daily average attendance.

Admittedly...I don't know that data to show whether or not research has determined that charter and magnet schools are significantly better at educating students.  I just firmly believe that the same shoe doesn't fit the same way for every person.

Last thing...I don't believe charter and magnet schools should receive any additional public funding than any other school.  I probably believe that, though, because I'm a public school teacher, so I likely am biased.

                    2020 - E-Learning - Day 15

10:25 a.m. - Today has been productive so far...gor the morning wake-up and exercise routine completed, went for a nordic walk, got cleaned up, and started the day.  I applied for a part-time package handler job down at FedEx Ground on Turkey Hollow Road...watching the video made me think of my days loading and unloading hay racks.  I'm not sure if I'll get a response or not, but I did update a resume and am going to take it to another possible opening over in Buffalo, Iowa.  It's kind of weird updating my resume to distribute for a little extra money.

                      2020 - E-Learning - Day 14

4:25 p.m. - Today did not go as expected, but it wasn't horrible. I participated in a meeting with the Association/Admin teams, and I probably said too much.  The Harrison's came over today, so I spent a lot of time with them in between checking emails and helping students.  Jack and Rhonda also came over and Jack helped me figure out the recliner, which is BIG...it wasn't reclining correctly, so it's back into shape now.  The big thing that didn't get accomplished was research papers, but it's not like there is a growing demand to get those finished.  I'll see if I can get to those later today.

So President Trump is banning immigration from the south to protect the United States from Covid19 and protect jobs, but he's encouraging states to relax shelter-in-place orders.  Huh?  Sometimes, I just am confused and have to leave it that way.

                      2020 - E-Learning - Day 13

5:40 p.m. - The walking poles arrived today.  I tried them out, and I struggled.  I think I get the idea, but it's going to take some practice to feel comfortable with them.  When I got back from my attempt, I watched some videos again, and that helped too.  I think I purchased a cheaper pair of poles, so the grip isn't as advanced as more expensive poles.  I thing I'm going to try my biking gloves with them and see if that helps.

There's a risk.  A former FDA administrator was interviewed on the Today Show, and I appreciate what he said.  He commented that until widespread testing, a tracing process, and a vaccine are available, relaxing social distancing restrictions is a risk.  When people protest the restrictions, what they should be saying is that they are comfortable with health risk in order to return to work.  I'm okay with people taking that stance, as long as those people are okay with others that are unwilling to take that risk because of their health concerns for themselves or their family members.

                      Discipline Management

This topic is sure different now that as of last Friday, schools will remain closed to face-to-face instruction for the remainder of the school year, but this was a topic I had jotted down a long time ago as a possible blog discussion.

At the time, I'm sure I was talking about best ways to have discipline management in the classroom, which is usually a really big deal for new teachers.  I remember my first years at Westmer Secondary School, and I was having a whole lot of problems with student discipline.  I couldn't have a behaved classroom, and it was awful.  I tried point systems and positive incentives and different seating arrangements and office referrals...it was a nightmare.  Part of that was that I was teaching junior high students - gosh I never want to do that again.  Another part was that I was "fresh meat", and those little devils knew it.  I remember practically being in tears and eventually asking a teacher next door how she seemed to have so much discipline so easily, and she smiled and told me that it sort of just happens.

Well, it's not magic, but it seems like it.  I know now that being "old" helps.  For some odd reason, just being older and more experienced seems to enhance discipline management.  The age of the student matters a lot too.  I still tell Amber and other teachers that teach younger kids to help them grow up before they get to me, because I don't have a lot of patience for "silliness" or "jackwagons" as Amber likes to use the term.  I think over the years, though, helping students know that you genuinely do care about them and want good for them makes a big, big difference.  Even if a student is reluctant to school, caring about him/her goes a long, long way.

Each teacher needs to come up with his/her discipline management system that works and keeps a good classroom climate that allows everyone the opportunity to learn.  So it's not like waving a magic wand, but it does take time and comfort.

                      What Will Your Verse Be?

Sometimes, I don't sleep well when I don't have answers to problems that are close to me.  The Holy Spirit helped me recently with help from The Sober Guy Podcast, Pastor Paul's message during the Facebook Live service of RUMC, and a blogpost that revealed part of the answer.

                      • The particular podcast featured the host sharing a bit of his story of recovery - how he had failed so many times, but getting back up from relapse could always be attempted, no matter how many times relapse occurred.  In the podcast notes, he also shared a resource that was a link to receive a daily message via email that was supportive of recovery.
                      • Then this morning one of my unaddressed blog topics was the subject of this blog - What Will Your Verse Be?  So I got online and found one that seems to be fitting.

                        • Proverbs 17:9 - Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
                      • And in Paul's sermon this morning, Paul discussed FANIFI - find a need and fulfill it.
My problem that was causing my brain to spin was how my son could possibly pick himself up when he is released from jail.  How does any inmate "start-up" his life in a positive fashion when he/she has damaged or destroyed everything - car, phone, home, relationships, money, etc...

So I don't know if my son will follow the answer that's now in my brain.  I don't know if he will seek others to help him; I don't know if he will follow a path of fostering love to cover offenses and avoid repeating offenses that separates close friends, and I don't know if he will FANIFI.  I believe, though, that I will pray and hope that he does, and that may be all I can do at this point.  I will then hope that good things will occur as a result of his actions.

That approach isn't glamorous, but it's a start.  And many thanks to the Holy Spirit for granting me an opportunity to wrestle and come to grips with helping me slow my spinning brain down and find a direction.

Education And Social Media In 1984?

This was a post idea that has been on my list of drafts for quite some time, and now that the Governor of Illinois has ordered all K-12 schools closed for the remainder of the school year, perhaps this morning I will respond to it.

In this time of isolation guidelines, what would life be like?  If we couldn't use Zoom or Google Meets or Facebook Live, how would we be doing.  If we didn't have email or instant messaging, how would we be doing?  If this would have happened in 1984, my senior year in high school, and my senior year and all spring sports and activities were cancelled, how would I be doing?

Okay...so let's imagine education and social media under COVID isolation restrictions in April of 1984.

We would have phones to call family members, and we would be able to use the post office to mail letters and packages.  I'd be able to jog and ride my bike around Taylor Ridge, and I would be able to shoot baskets in my backyard.  I'd be able to mow the yard, and I would probably be helping my grandfather and uncles on their farms more extensively.  Being around my brother probably wouldn't have been easy - not because we had a lot of conflicts, but two teenage boys together would have ultimately led to issues.  I could have still driven the NOVA to drive-through and curbside pick-up places for meals.  I would have likely felt very blessed to have been able to finish the basketball season, and I probably wouldn't have been two upset about missing track.  I would likely be nervous about where I was going for college and if I was going to play basketball.

School?  Would RHS have attempted to continue remote learning without all the technology that schools now have?  We would have had to done it all with paper packets, and that would have been challenging for teachers and administrators.

As I think back, I have to believe that I would have spent a lot of time trying to find ways to work out and improve my basketball skills whenever I had free time.  I think I have it a lot better now than I would have had it in 1984.

                      Sunday, April 19

10:09 a.m. - I've watched church service, stretched, completed 10-minute ab exercise, walked with Lily, and while walking with Lily listened to Fledge Fitness Podcast, in which I heard about naturally essence sparkling water, which I'm going to have to find more out about.

4:30 p.m. - i got the yard mowed and decided to move some bricks and firewood that were in the backyard.  I moved them out by the back shed, and I think I may try to have a tiny little garden in the backyard...maybe a couple of tomato plants, green peppers, and some cucumbers.  It was nice to be outside doing yardwork today.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (4/19)

Some states are easing stay-at-home restrictions for residents; others or not.  A medical expert interviewed on the Today show suggested that when people start to get together again, things will be fine for 2-3 weeks because the virus will spread silently for that period.  People will then become sick again without really knowing where they got it, and medical facilities then have a chance to become too burdened.  The data seems to suggest that until more comprehensive testing and tracing is in place, easing restrictions is potentially problematic.  These protesters in these states....mostly white and frequently wearing Trump merchandise...are louder than folks that are staying at home and following the restrictions, but a PEW research poll says 2/3 of those people polled are concerned that easing restrictions is a bad idea.

                      Saturday, April 18

7:41 p.m. - Some days are meant for others.  Most of the day was spent with the Harrisons or the Masseys.  Brooklyn and Brinley and then Darren and Kensie were here until around 11 a.m.  We went to Jack and Rhonda's around 3:30.  In between, I did stretch and did get a little nap.  And after getting home around 7 p.m. I just don't feel like doing anything..just feel really sleepy.  So I'm jotting this down and then will watch some television and go to bed.  I feel drug down today; some sleep and some exercise tomorrow will help, I hope.

                      2020 E.Learning - Day 12

6:28 a.m.  It snowed again!  The ground is covered, but I don't think there is as much snow as a couple of days ago, which makes sense.  Forecasting snow must be difficult, because the weather forecasters have seemed to get the totals wrong fairly consistently this winter.  It's a wet snow, so it's coating the trees and bushes, so it is pretty.  The temps really aren't that bad, so I think I'm going to be able to get outside and take a good walk or jog.

Today, a big announcement is suppose to be made regarding whether or not Illinois K-12 schools will return for the school year.  Missouri has closed for the year, and now Wisconsin has done the same.  Illinois is now part of a state consortium regarding plans for restriction rollbacks, and I think Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, and Ohio are part of that group as well  Michigan had already canceled face-to-face instruction for the school year, so it appears likely that the Illinois Governor will have that order today.

10:26 p.m. - There was an event at the school today where teachers were asked to line up their cars, the lights were turned on at the football and softball fields, and students and parents and community members were honking and waiving.  This came on the heels when the governor said the school closure will extend to the rest of the year, so e-learning is here to stay.  I got a lot done, but no research papers were scored...maybe tomorrow.  The Harrison girls are over tonight, so we get to play grandparents for a sleepover.  And with that, I'm headed to bed.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (4/17)

FoxNews is now beating the drum that the virus was caused by the Chinese, particularly a lab in the Wuhan province.  And I was just watching someone chastising the "left wing media" for not reporting it.  Plus, another party responsible with the World Health Organization, and in fact President Trump has said the U.S. is going to suspend funding support of the organization.  I hope this blame game helps, but I don't really know how to react.  Would it anger me to know that China attempted to downplay the situation?  Didn't the U.S. do that?  Or were the Chinese as ignorant and unknowing as much as the United States was.

More protests have been seen...now in Minnesota.  People are pushing for the country easing the restrictions...do they think their states really want to have these restrictions?  I think I'm reminded that people can be really, really stupid.

                        2020 E-Learning - Day 11

6:45 a.m. - I had a conversation with Chase, which didn't go very well...again.  He seems to want me to be open to him purchasing and using drugs illegally.  I just won't.  And that gap in his belief and my belief generally ends up being the end of the conversation.  The whole concept confuses me because he doesn't seem to recognize where his philosophy eventually ends up for him, and I almost think he realizes this, but instead of going "drug-free" and finding alternative measures, it seems he just wants to be a better drug user - like he just needs to get more efficient and effective at illegal drug use to avoid all the bad stuff that ends up happening to him - destruction of relationships, possessions, jobs, etc...

The weather is suppose to be interesting again tonight.  Even though it's April 16, the forecast is calling for several inches of snow...geez.

Yesterday, I received the coronavirus stimulus check of $1,200 from the federal government, and I used it along with some money I had saved up to send a check to VISA to pay off the balance on my credit card.  I've had to much of a balance on that credit card for several years...basically since my divorce.  At one point, the dang thing was "maxed out", and that was crap.  It feels wonderful to be able to avoid a credit card payment.

3:26 p.m. I had a productive day.  I worked on some financial things that helped me with my financial picture.  I scored more research papers.  I worked on getting some grades for this week inserted and messages out to students.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (4/16)

I'm hearing President Trump says we are going to start reopening the country because we are past the peak of the virus.  This information is very confusing, since just yesterday, "experts" were suggesting that social distancing measures would need to be enforced for another year.  In New York, citizens are required to wear masks.  The number of positive of cases and deaths still are climbing.  So since we apparently (according to President Trump) have past the peak, it's time to start opening up businesses and states.  People in Michigan were protesting against the stay at home orders.  I realize that I'm not nearly as affected as others, so I can only imagine what some folks are going through.  Still, I can't help but think we are posing the majority of people in our country that want to return to normal against high risk candidates that are still in danger.  It seems like many people value their jobs and the economy and President Trump against high risk folks...I'm just not sure I'm ready to accept that.  Again, though, it's easier for me to be able to say that.

I keep hearing that we are in trouble because 80% of citizens in the United States live paycheck to paycheck. Isn't that a problem?  Does that mean that we don't compensate citizens well enough?  Does that mean that we don't require citizens to save enough?  Should we ourselves have a deeper understanding of having enough savings.  I've heard three months should be in our savings account to help get through a tough time.  For me that's $6,000, so that's what I'm going to shoot for.

Sunday, April 12 - Happy Easter!

3:52 a.m. - My sleep cycle is really off.  Here it is almost 4:00 a.m. again, and I'm up and really can't fall back to sleep.  I think today needs to be a big exercise day in order to tire myself out and see if I can't get back on a better sleep rhythm.

I think Amber is making Easter morning breakfast, so I'll probably deviate from my normal eating plan, but that's okay.  I also think we have some of her family coming and going, so maybe we'll see some kids.  I won't be seeing my children, but I'm going to try to video chat with Carmen and Cole, and I have an Easter mailing to go out to them.  I won't see Chase, and I'll try to video chat with mom and dad too.  I'll admit that holidays are sometimes tough on the heart for this divorced dad.  Holidays tend to bring back memories, which are good, but remind me of what once was but will never be again.

I'm not sure of RUMC service schedule.  I should probably check that out...maybe even check out other recent message I have missed.

5:19 a.m. - Well, I checked, and I'm still up, so I viewed the recent messages/services from RUMC, including this morning's service.  I also did some "googling" about Easter and Jews and Muslims.  I find it interesting that religions have different stories and different celebrations, yet the "biggies" as far as philosophies and beliefs are pretty similar.  Unfortunately the differences have often let to extreme and needless conflict.  We don't all have to be "right" about everything to be accepting of others who may not share the exact same perspectives as us.  There doesn't have to be one right...at least that's how I see it.

6:17 p.m. - We got to see the Harrisons, the Southwells, and Karrigan this morning for breakfast!  There was also an Easter Egg hunt, but we didn't think there was going to be a hunt, so the eggs were empty.  We'll have to correct that for next year.  It so cool to play toys and color and chase and run around.  After the kids and grandkids left, I got a little work done, did some paperwork, dropped some mail in the mailbox, got a walk in, and helped mom get her rototiller in the truck.  When I got back home after that, I finished a dirty thirty workout downstairs, and then I ate again.  This is my second meal of the day, which never happens, so tomorrow's weight gain will be interesting.  I'm planning on a walk this evening...hopefully going to watch an 83-84 basketball game and walk on the treadmill.

                            2020 - E-Learning - Day 10

11:00 a.m. - Today's weather is wacky...woke up to about three inches of snow on the ground, so this morning's exercise was a walk on the treadmill followed by the regular Wednesday light "at home" lifting routine.  I did watch the first half of the 1983 RHS basketball game versus Orion.  I'm enjoying the trips down memory lane, but it's like a movie you have seen before that has a sad ending - the movie is good, except the ending is hard to watch.  I do watch the games from a different perspective now...I watch the officials, and I watch my performance on a much more objective level than I'm sure I did as a cocky teenager.  I was a really good small school player, but I had more limitations at the time than I either was aware of or didn't want to accept.  I think, though, I can honestly say that I made the most of the talent and abilities I had.  I didn't have the ball-handling and quickness needed to play at the next level...had I had opportunities to play at a bigger school or perhaps had summer AAU opportunities like today's athletes, maybe I would have been a little better, but I still would have been limited.  Watching those game films, though, reinforces in my mind how blessed I was to have the coaching and the teammates around me that made playing the game so much fun and rewarding.  I watch how I play now and see some of the same attributes that I admired so much in players that I coached previously, or players that I see when I'm officiating now.  There are a select few "special players" who deep down in every fiber of their bodies LOVE the game - the whole game.  I was one of those players, and they are few and far between.  At each school I was a head coach, I had a few...maybe three or four at each stop.  I really don't remember where that love came from, and I suppose its environmental and somehow genetic?  What's key is that I really enjoy watching other athletes whose love is something else - baseball, football, softball, track, whatever.

Before my 10:00 a.m. office hour beginning, I also ran that truck spare tire down to Slayden's to get it repaired, and I stopped at Dollar General...stilly no wipes and toilet paper.  Do people really clean that much more often and use toilet paper that much more often now-a-days?

Everyone is waiting for Governor Pritzker's press conference today.  Supposedly there is a component that is going to involve education.  My guess is that he will be issuing an order for the closing of K-12 schools for the rest of the year, which will also cause the IHSA to cancel all Spring sports.  I guess we'll see.

While I'm on this topic, this closure is tough on "SOME" students.  And it's going to be tough on "SOME" parents.  Let me explain.  Above I talked about my love for basketball.  Had this happened to me prior to the start of my senior season in 1983-84, I would have been DEVASTATED!!!  And I know there are some seniors involved in extra-curriculars that likely feel this way, and I feel awful for them.  Plus, there are parents, that were really looking forward to the traditional high school prom, award ceremonies, graduation, and graduation parties that come along with the end of a student's senior year.  It's really a time as a parent to "glow" and be proud of his/her students efforts, and it's a time for the student to be publicly recognized...it just feels good.

That being said...my guess is the vast majority of students and parents aren't really all that upset about the school closure, extra-curricular cancellations, and end-of-the-year events.  For the most part, school and all the other stuff is seen as something that "has to be done"...students and parents go through the motions for some odd reason because they feel like they are supposed to do so.  It just could be that this whole mess may cause folks to get a new perspective and better appreciate all the things that are being lost during this pandemic.  Maybe it will be a reset and afford an opportunity to better appreciate things in the future.

                            2020 - E-Learning - Day 9

4:13 p.m. I've gotten to a few research papers, had a meeting with Jon Lehtola, have had an indoor walk and an outdoor walk, answered some emails, got a message out to parents of students, and updated some financial stuff.  I also sent another request for a conversation with Chase tomorrow.  All-in-all it's been a pretty good day.  I'd still like to keep tackling a few research papers today/tonight.  Oh, I had someone come look at the Dodge too, but I don't think he's interested.  I'm beginning to wonder if I will just have to give it away.

                            Monday, April 13, 2020

2:35 p.m.  Today has been busy even though this is technically an e-learning institute day.  I've completed my three meetings, sent feedback to students on last week's training path presentation assignment through Google Classroom comments, created tomorrow's video clip and posted to the stream, and completed the incomplete students list on the shared document that Mrs. Hasson shared with us. I think I'm ready for a break...maybe a walk on the treadmill is in order.

                              Saturday, April 11 - Cole's Birthday

3:25 a.m. - I can't sleep.  Actually, my sleep has been all messed up recently.  Last night I had a bout of food poisoning, and I was up sick around 2:00 a.m.  So I was tired from that and fell to sleep early last night, so I woke up today around 2:00 a.m. again and can't get back to sleep.  So rather than lay there, I just got up and started typing here.

As the title suggests, it's Cole's birthday.  He's 20 today, I think.  I know I should know that, and I'm pretty sure he's 20.  I'm going to go with it.  The virus thing has put the kabosh to parties, but I did send him a check for his birthday, and he got it.

I'm heading to Indiana with Greg today.  He has to pick something up, and he was looking for some company, so I have to be at his house at 6 a.m.  With that in mind, I'm not sure I will go back to sleep.  He say's we are going to be back by 3, but that sounds a little quick.  It will be good to get out of the house and spend some time with him, as the past few weeks haven't been around other folks much other than immediate family.  I feel good accompanying him, since last year about this time, he helped me drive out to Colorado to get Chase.  I worry a little being around Greg because he has had heart issues in the past, so he's an "underlying health issues" candidate.  If I was a carrier, I could get him really sick.

6:18 p.m. - The trip to Indiana went quickly and without difficulty; the part he was picking up was for his pontoon boat.  I stopped at Jersey Mike's for sandwiches, but they weren't really all that good.  I'm really tired, but I'm trying to hold off sleeping until later, so hopefully I can sleep all night and don't weigh 230 lbs tomorrow morning.

                              Good Friday, April 10, 2020

Good Friday was "Work Friday", but it was good work.  I did get some exercise in the morning, and then I watched Brooklyn and Brinley while Amber was getting her hair done downstairs.  The weather, then, was just good enough to mow the lawn and then head to my mom and dad's to try to get the garden tilled up for her.  That ended up being more difficult than intended because the throttle on the engine wasn't working properly.  I'm not exactly a small engine expert, so my efforts weren't productive.  We did get the garden turned over a little before giving up.  Mom's going to call and see if we can get the tiller repaired or perhaps it's time to purchase something new.  After the garden fiasco, I helped mom put a couple of patches on the chicken shed and then move the chickens over - nothing like crawling around in dirt and chicken crap trying to catch chickens...that's a good day's effort.  I wrapped up the adventure by sitting down with the folks and enjoying a little Miller High Life.  Of course we had to talk about President Trump and what an idiot he is, a topic that always comes up.  Then in was home and a little supper and eventually some TV and bed.  Somehow those dang research papers escaped me again.

Oh I forgot. I did try to go to Walmart to pick up an Easter card for Carmen and Cole, but Walmart parking lot was packed with cars.  I don't think folks are taking this virus thing very serious in these parts, or perhaps Easter shopping just is a priority of getting infected or being infected.  I contemplated going in, but then I though better of it.  I stopped at Casey's in Reynolds instead and picked up a couple of gift cards and lottery tickets.  I'll mail something out to them this weekend.

                              2020 - E-Learning - Day 8

6:41 a.m. -  It's garbage day!  And it's recycle day! I have to remember that because if I don't get the garbage and recycle out, I will miss them.  Actually, the company that we contract with are awesome.  There are times I've forgotten that they have walked up the drive and gotten them anyway.  I always purchase a little gift card during the holidays and maybe some lottery tickets.  Not a good day for garbage day, though, because of a lot of wind.  Hopefully, the pick up by 8 a.m. will beat the strong winds.

noon - I only had three students join the interactive GMeet live sessions that were available today, so that part of the day didn't take very long.  I'm interested to see and hear how this all goes with students that don't complete this coursework.  We teachers have been told to keep it simple, be compassionate, and be caring, and I think that rationale applies to elementary and perhaps junior high students - maybe even freshmen and some sophomores.  The sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have transportation and jobs...they are the interesting ones.  Some of these folks have now shifted roles; they are now working full-time hours and attempting to complete coursework in a part-time student status.  Others of these folks aren't even attempting to complete coursework.  Many of the students are staying up late at night and sleeping in well into the day.  They have social networking avenues to stay in contact with friends, and in an age of video games and Netflix and social media, not having to attend school, not having to attend practices, not having to go to work...they are just fine with that.  We are only in week two of E-Learning, but for many upperclassmen high school students, this time period is maybe at worst an inconvenience.

By the way, I did get a walk in and watched an RHS 83-84 half of basketball.  We are kicking the snot out of Sherrard, but I picked up three fouls in the first damn period and didn't play at all in the second period. And then Amber decided for me that I need to clean the showers, which was a lot of fun.  Kourtney and Tucker came over, though, to help break up the day a bit, which was nice.  I have now entered scores from Monday's assignment, and I'm next going to be revisiting research papers to see if I can get some of them scored today.  I think it's going to be a long day today, and I'm feeling sleepy, even though I slept pretty well last night.

                                2020 - E-Learning - Day 7

9:49 a.m. - I got in another bike ride this morning, and it was a beautiful morning other than the wind picking up in my face on my way back, but I just thanked the universe for some free resistance and kept on peddling.  My weight has gone down for the fourth day in a row, which is AWESOME news.  I've been trying to be more active during the day...more walks, yardwork, to-do list items...and I've been trying to lay-off the chips and sugary snacks.  I need to keep the trend going down.  I want a flatter belly and decreased love handles!

The coronavirus news feels like a consistent roller coaster - sometimes there is news that is "light at the end of the tunnel", and sometimes there's news that is "there will be a lot of death".  Sometimes there's news of drugs to help; sometimes there's news of not enough PPE.

                                  2020 - E-Learning - Day 6

7:07 a.m. - The temps are suppose to be the warmest today than they have been in the past six months, so it's time to get out this morning for a bike ride - something I haven't done since last fall.  It's going to feel good to get out on the bike, like the ability to get outside and do things has felt great.  And since the temps are suppose to plunge after today, I'm going to get out there this morning before the 10 a.m. start to the work day.

4:45 p.m. - It's been a positive day for exercise...a bike ride and two walks!  I did eat a lot tonight, though, so I hope I didn't just ruin all that exercise work.  Dang Amber made chocolate cookies, and I had some of them too.  I'm going to head to mom and dad's to sharpen those blades, so I plan on keeping myself busy until 8 p.m. to stay away from snacks and more cookies.

I also have set a record for the most research papers scored in one day.  It's not an impressive number, but it's a start!  I also updated my English III guidelines and sent them to Mrs. Hasson for approval, so hopefully I will hear back on that soon.

6:30 p.m. - Another positive evening outside tonight.  I got the blades sharpened, put back on the decks of the push mower and riding mower, and put mowers back in the shed.  I also swept up the garage, moved the sandbags out of the truck and turned the truck around to face the road.  I would have liked to got a little gas in the truck and checked the oil and put the spare tire back, but the tire needs fixed, and I still don't have the main set of keys to the truck, so there's still time for that.  I have a visit with Chase at 7:15 tonight, and that will put a wrap on the evening.  I hope I sleep a little better tonight...maybe I'll remember to put the cats downstairs to keep them from waking me up early.

                                  Things for today

                                    • a.m. bike ride - DONE..Wow! It felt good to get outside and pedal away some energy.  I took several deep breaths just to take in the fresh air.
Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (4/7)

This is suppose to be "good news"?  I read this today about the good news about the models being wrong about the number of deaths that could be expected. "But the newest version of the model underscores just how important social distancing continues to be: It assumes that those measures -- such as closing schools and businesses -- will continue until August, and it still predicts tens of thousands of deaths."  OH MY GOODNESS - August?

Exploring Literature in the Age Beyond Spark Notes

While the internet and social media have brought to us many, many joys like Facebook, interactive video chats, Twitter, gaming, movies, etc..., this information and communication revolution has also brought with it an endless supply of outlets and resources that basically allow students to cheat on assignments that involve literature.  In fact, students can purchase packaged essays and research papers for just a few dollars.  In my college days, paper copies of Spark Notes could be seen around campus as students attempted to speed through the process of actually reading something, but today's resources go well beyond those now ancient measures.

Teachers don't assign papers and essays and comprehension questions over great literature to be demons.  There are legitimate and important concepts and lessons and discussion items that are beneficial.  Why does Atticus Finch take the case of Tom Robinson when Finch absolutely knows there is no chance of winning?  What a great opportunity for students to discuss how civil rights progress works.  Students will tell you, though, they just don't have time to read and do school work.  And in many cases, they are correct.

That new phone they are using, the car they are driving, the nice jeans with holes in them...those things cost money.  So many students are turning to part-time jobs during the school year to provide an income.  Other students are involved in time-consuming extra-curricular activities - sports, music, FFA, and many other activities.  Then there are video-games, Netflix, Tik Tok, and other entertainment venues that simply are more fun that reading a book and writing an analysis paper.

                                  So enters the short-cut.

For teachers, it's harder and harder to craft authentic, meaningful literature assignments designed to limit the opportunities for cheating.  I suppose an argument could be made for trying to stay ahead of the resources and select good novels that are brand new, but who is going to buy those novels?  I have been asking my school for new textbooks since I arrived, and I've consistently been told there are no funds available for those kinds of resources.  I know I would get the same answer regarding a class set of novels.

In the end, it may be pessimistic, but I've basically given in.  In fact, I went so far as to provide copies of a Spark Notes packet for a novel that we have done in class.  I figured if students were going to short cut the assignment, at least they should all have the same short-cut, because in the end, a short-cut is created by someone, and like I try to express to students, they are getting someone's perspective, someone's thoughts and views and opinions.

I was surprised at how few students actually took me up on taking the packet, but what was interesting was that students would still attempt to find other short-cuts even when provided a short-cut.

We can only do what we can do.  How students cheat or short-cut or refuse to work is ultimately beyond our control.  Our job is just to do our job and try to not stress too much over the parts of our job that we can't control.  So there is still a good place for good classic literature; we just have to understand that students may not have the same appreciation.

                                  2020 - E-Learning - Day 5

7:35 p.m - It's been a productive day, but it's also been another day that I haven't scored any additional research papers.  I'm hoping tomorrow is better.  It's taking me much longer to grade assignments than I've anticipated, but figuring out the process is half of the battle.  I can only try to stay positive and keep plugging away.  Maybe tomorrow will be better for research papers.  I also got two walks in - one in the morning and one after school was over at 3:00 p.m.  I'm actually hoping to get another walk this evening too, but that may not happen.  I did eat a little smarter today, so hopefully my weight is going to go down tomorrow morning.

                                  Things for today

SAT ESSAY...Why It Should Be More Important To More People

One of my someday things on my blog is to tackle other topics that I have "drafted" previously for later development.  So this morning I'll tackle SAT ESSAY.

Unfortunately, since the state has cancelled the SAT for April 14 due to Covid19, this particular topic is a little moot.  Here's the deal, though, I really like the SAT ESSAY task, and I wish our school and staff would better embrace it.  Essentially, the task is for students to read a passage, determine how the author is attempting to be influential, and then writing their own explanatory essay sharing their analysis of the author's efforts.  This particular task is SO IMPORTANT, especially for today's students as they are consistently bombarded on social media with information that may or may not be accurate and/or from credible sources.

As students develop into adults, isn't an important life skill to show an ability to analyze how a person attempts to be influential in a message?  When watching an infomercial, isn't it important to be able to recognize how a particular message is crafted to get audience members to buy?  What about a radio commercial?  How about a political campaign advertisement?  What about a post-secondary path training rep?

I'm not suggesting that every message requires very careful critical analysis, but students should at least have the wherewithal and knowledge and ability to be able to analyze a message and the author's persuasive tactics woven into the message.

Here's my concern...I feel like I'm on an island of concern.  At Rockridge, we require students to complete the essay, when it's actually optional.  What do we do with those results, though?  And if the students know that the essay doesn't factor into the composite score, and it's the last assessment at the end of the morning on test day, how much do they try?  So there seems to be a disconnect between requiring the students to complete the assessment and how much importance that students and staff and school district place on it.  It's all a bit confusing.  I don't get it.

                                  4-5-20 - Palm Sunday

8:54 a.m - This morning has featured online Palm Sunday Service at RUMC.  Paul, Tess, Gary, and Tami are doing a great job, and it's been interesting to see how they are adding something small each week as they learn and develop their presentation skills with the limited technology they have.  I wonder if Paul will consider having each service videotaped and recorded now.

Today's weather should be good for completing some projects outside.  I''d really like to get the riding mower started, and I'd like to push mow a little bit of the yard that is starting to need it.  Behind our house needs some trimming.  That part of the yard gets the most early spring sun and heat, so it grows the earliest and fastest.  My body would also appreciate getting some extra activity in.  I broke over the 220 pounds mark this morning...ugh.  I keep trying to talk to myself, and so far the healthy Jay is losing to the unhealthy Jay.  I need to get at least two exercise sessions during the day, and three is better.  Usually morning exercise isn't a problem, and most days I can get two in like morning and evening.  When I only get one session in, though, I tend to eat just as much and most times more.  So I almost need to have a calorie limit pending how many exercise sessions I get.  And not surprisingly, I am always hungrier when I exercise less.

Yesterday, I had another call from Chase.  His perspective on his situation is troubling me.  I prefer, though, not to talk about that too much here, though.  I'm learning, though, that life in the Mercer County Jail isn't as difficult as I thought it might be.  According to Chase, in his room, he has a bed, desk, shower, sink, and toilet.  He's brought a meal to him three times a day, and there is a sort of lounge that has books and kiosks for inmates to have virtual visits.  He's provided paper and writing utensils.  It sounds like he's pretty much confided to his room, but that might have more to do with covid 19 than the usual process at the jail.

7:52 p.m. - I'm tired.  I spent a lot of time outside working today.  I finally got the dang tractor running!  I was able to get the yard mowed, get the garage changed around with the picnic table out by the pool area with Amber's help, pulled weeds in the backyard, dug up the dirt in the flower bed, trimmed the roses, and raked leaves out of the landscaping areas.  Amber and I also raked weeds and debris from the bottom of the ditch.  Amber and I celebrated the accomplishments by picking up a to-go order from Texas Roadhouse.  I pigged out, which is something I'll likely regret on the scale tomorrow.  I had a full stack of ribs, backed potato, green beans, and bread....oh and some grilled shrimp.  I also spent a little time on the truck, but it still needs some more work.

                                  Things for today
