Monday, October 31 - Happy Halloween!

5:54 a.m. - The weekend went very, very well.  Yesterday was extremely productive, even though it was sad.  We got up in the morning at Loud Thunder and Randy, Shawn, and I worked on winterizing all of our campers after a great breakfast from Amber of biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon, and sausage.  (Shawn even kept the campfire going.)  The previous night we sat next to the fire on yet a beautiful night.  Jack and Rhonda and my mom joined us as well.

When we departed Loud Thunder, that would be the last camping of the season, as then I headed home to empty out the Eagle.  Amber and I worked for about an hour to clear it out and put all the important stuff in storage in our basement.  After that, it was off to my parents house, where I backed the Eagle into the storage shed to rest until April.  Mom helped me back it in, and then we had a nice visit.

The return trip home feature use of the HHR to transport all the recycle from the pool winterization project - bottles of antifreeze and chlorine along with all the boxes.  I drove over to West Lake Park and there was plenty of room to put all of the materials into the containers there.  I made a stop at KwikStar to fill up the tank and take advantage of lower gas prices.

Back home and it was time to take a quick shower and spend time with Kourtney, Tucker, and Rosie.  After that I watched a little football and went to bed...a long day, a sad day, but an important day too.

TODAY?  We have an 11:30 dismissal, and I have some school work I need to do.  I wasn't in a big hurry to do it at home because the students have to go through an internet safety presentation, so I'll have time.  And then in the afternoon we have professional development.  And then I have tonight off, which will be one of the last night's off for awhile.

Friday, October 28

9:42 a.m. - We made it!  It's Friday!  P-T conferences are over, and it's a three day weekend...really almost a four day weekend.  Last night we stayed in the camper...nice peaceful night.  This morning Shawn pulled in Big Red, and Amber, he, and I had some breakfast.  Today Shawn's off working, and Amber is helping out with grandchildren.  I think I'm going to enjoy the park...take a long hike and maybe then do some fishing if the nice weather holds.  I want today to be a relaxing day because I'm never quite sure what tomorrow will bring.

And it's payday!

Thursday, October 27

6:33 a.m. - One more day!  I spent the night at the camper at Loud Thunder, so that helped.  I pulled in around 8:15 p.m., and went to bed after the 10 o'clock news.  I was the only person and camper out there, so it was very quiet and peaceful.  I intended to go for a walk this morning, but I was silly and didn't bring the right shoes.  With that in mind, I just came home.

Yesterday at school was fine...I had a few more parents/guardians stop in for conferences than I was used to.  Today I hope goes quickly, so I can then get to the weekend.  We had a potluck dinner last night at school, and tonight is a boxed lunch from Hungry Hobo.  Today I also hope to get some things done; yesterday I got the essays scored, so that was good.

Wednesday, October 26

5:40 a.m. - Last night's volleyball regional went fine, so that was good.  Yesterday's school day went okay too.  I almost decided to spend the night at the camper at Loud Thunder, but there was still rain, so I decided to just sleep in the bed at home...maybe I'll try to be in the camper tonight.

Today is Free Read Wednesday, and this is also day one of parent teacher conferences.  I did send out a message to parents about conferences, suggesting that if their student is not performing well that having the student in attendance would be helpful.  I also told parents that if they were not planning on attending and just wanted a brief email report that I would send that out.  I did have a few parents respond to that, so I followed up with a quick comment.  I also started to score essays, beginning with second period.  They aren't very good, which isn't a big surprise.  My goal is to get all the essays scored by tomorrow night and then release the scores on Lumen sometime after that.  Two days of the week down; two to go; the rain, which we needed, looks like it has moved out and the forecast for the weekend looks like it's going to cooperate.

Tuesday, October 25

5:54 a.m. - I watched the Bears play last night on television after spending some time with my mom.  She was looking for some help going through some items at her mom's house.  She and her sister are pretty much leading the effort to have the house emptied since my Uncle Bill is now in an assisted living facility.  It's a big job, since there was never an effort by my grandparents before they passed away nor my uncle to downsize the amount of "stuff" in the house.  I think that's one thing a parent could do for a child - make the transition easier.  I know the effort brings a lot of memories for my mom, and I try to be sympathetic.  I think she would like everything to go to someone, but many of the things just are hang-on-the-wall-items or older appliances.  It's just hard.

At school we got through yesterday.  The essay assignment is now done, so I'll start working on scoring those.  I should have time today and then tomorrow and Thursday with parent-teacher conferences.  I think I'm going to go with a little early American "spooky story" literature piece to get through the rest of the week.  Then I think we'll head to Indigenous People contributions.

Today the rain looks like it is mostly going to be east of here.  I have an IHSA volleyball event to work in Biggsville, and then I just may spend the evening out in the camper.  I guess it depends on how late the volleyball evening goes.

SUNDAY - New Years Day

Monday, October 24

6:15 a.m. - The Eagle is not parked next to the house.  I had the quickest pull-out to pull-in day ever yesterday.  I pulled out in the horse corral area and pulled right in to site 16 in Deer Haven.  I was going to stay last night, but the forecast called for rain, and if I was going to work anyway, I might as well get a better night's sleep.  Rain in the camper can be a bit noisy and difficult for good sleeping.

I did get to spend the afternoon at the campground, though.  I finished my book, I cleaned and organized the inside of the camper and the storage compartments under the bedroom.  I also went for a nice long hike, which was something I wanted to do all weekend.  There's just something about hiking in the woods in all the leaves.  After the hike, I returned to the camper and cooked up some pork chops on the Blackstone.  The clouds started to appear in the northwest, so I hustled and buttoned everything down.  I think I got home around 6:30 p.m.

Today is not a hard day, but it will be a day calling for patience and thinking.  The essays are due tonight, so today is a proofreading day.  I'll go through them, and I'll be lucky if 60% of the essays are finished.  That's where the patience need arrives.  The thinking comes in the form of figuring out our next unit of instruction for English III.  I think we are going to go with early contributions of Indigenous People.

This is a weird week to survive because it's an extremely long week for me, but a shortened week for students.  Tonight I'm going to help my mom.  Tomorrow night a long night of officiating at West Central - that volleyball regional I'm working for my partner.  Wednesday and Thursday night's are parent teacher conferences.  Thursday night, I want to be in my camper enjoying a beverage by 8:30 p.m.  Then there is no school on Friday, and Monday is only a half day.  (Oh, and Wednesday and Thursday are 2:10 early dismissal days for students.)

Sunday, October 23

8:56 a.m. - I'm currently on dog and Luke daycare instead of being at the campground, so I have a few minutes with Luke on my lap to complete this entry.  It's been a fun weekend so far, and there have also been adventures.  The main adventure has been the battle of the little dang stink bugs.  They are think in the after noon with the unusual warm October temperatures.  Yesterday we tried to spray water and dawn dish soap around the windows and openings, and I think it helped a little.  Also yesterday when the Harrisons arrived we went on a long hike, played on the playground, collected some acorns, built a small campfire, and made smores.  Last night's sleep didn't go so well with Luke and me, but that was to be expected.

Prior to the kids' arrival, Amber and I road our bikes, and I also went for quick trip down to the lake to see the water and throw in the last few worms that remained in the cartons.  We are staying at the horse corral area now, but we made the executive decision to just leave the Eagle at Loud Thunder for the week.  I already wanted to be there beginning next Thursday...why not just spend a little more money and leave it there.  Even if I don't make it out, I'm saved the trouble of bringing it back home and then hooking up all over again.  Now if I just didn't have school and parent-teacher conferences.  So after Luke goes home, I'll be going back to the campground to move the camper to Deer Haven.  I think the weather is supposed to be even windier today, so I'll likely take another hike and watch some leaves fall.  If the rain gets here, I may come back home late tonight; otherwise, I'll get up early in the morning and come home and get ready for school.

Friday, October 21

6:52 a.m. - I was able to get the Eagle out to the campground yesterday, and the evening was wonderful.  Everything was so still, and the temps weren't bad, and the campfire looked great.  It's just too bad we had to get up early and return home to get ready for a school day.  That's okay, though, we were able to spend some time at the campground, which is always good.  Nothing like campfire roasted hot dogs for supper.

Remember when I mentioned that my volleyball officiating schedule was over...NOPE...once again, that statement proves false.  My partner has a conflict with his regional in Biggsville on Tuesday, so that's where I'm headed.  I'm a post-season official by default.  That little trip will make next week a very long week.  I need to get plenty of relaxation this weekend.

Thursday, October 20

6:22 a.m. - I slept well last night for the first time in a long time.  Maybe it was the walk I took with Sophie.  I needed a good sleep.

Today the weather temps are supposed to turn warmer, and the weekend temps look favorable for a nice camping weekend.  I reserved a spot in the horse corral area starting tonight, so after school I'm going to get the camper all hooked up and pull it out to site 3.  I'm not sure if we will stay there tonight or not, but it will be all set up to enjoy tomorrow after school.  I could definitely use a good weekend right now.

Wednesday, October 19

6:14 a.m. - The volleyball season for me is over.  I say that knowing that almost every time I say that something occurs to cause me to have another game or two in that particular season.  A couple of months ago I claimed that softball was over, and then I was assigned an IESA Regional date.  Never-the-less, at this point, I have no more volleyball matches on my schedule.  And last night went out with a bang - two good teams and a good match.  I learned yesterday that my partner was assigned a regional, which is good news for him.  I can't work a regional next week because of parent-teacher conferences.

Today is free read Wednesday; it's officiating free; and the weather should be warming up if the forecast is correct.  My hope is to come home and get the camper ready to go somewhere this weekend, as the weekend weather forecast is looking great.

My ear is feeling a little better.  I didn't have to take an extra dose of Tylenol last night.  I still can't hear clearly out of it, but I'm not feeling as much pain.  Maybe one more day will start to see some better hearing.

Tuesday, October 18

6:15 a.m. - It's a cold one, so yesterday after school and before volleyball officiating, I drained the water out of the tanks and the hot water heater, and I opened up all the faucets and valves.  I don't think anything will freeze up and break over this two-day cold snap, but draining all of that out of the system is a little insurance I hope.

Yesterday was a tough one...didn't feel well, but I needed to be inspiring.  I tried, and I'll try again to inspire students to put effort into their writing assignments.  As I've probably said before, if I were to only give them one day to complete their assignments, they would complain. On the other hand, if I give them a week, and they only commit a day of effort, why provide a week?

We have one more volleyball match tonight.  I'm with my regular partner again, so that will help.

Monday, October 17

6:17 a.m. - Ugh, I feel terrible today.  Yesterday an ear infection in my left ear went full force.  Today, I still can't hear out of it, but I did sleep a little better last night.  I should take the day off and go to the doctor, but I really don't have sub plans ready.  The day will probably just be simpler if I suck it up, down some Tylenol, and get through the day.  Plus, today and tomorrow are my last volleyball matches.

Yesterday, after church service I went to Muscatine to fill up my gas tank.  Then I was going to drive to Wildcat Den and take a hike, but it appeared that there were dear hunters in the park.  So I just kept on driving and never did get in a hike.

I'm keeping an eye on the weather forecast, and I may need to turn the heater on in the Eagle the next couple of nights.  Temps are supposed to fall into the 20's, and I haven't winterized it.  I'm going to have to think that one over.

Sunday, October 16

8:10 a.m. - Some days are good days...productive, efficient, perhaps even noteworthy and memorable  Yesterday started out good...completed the pool project as well as other "cold weather" items regarding the outside of our house.  And then I was headed to my parents to have a nice visit.

And then my world went horribly, horribly wrong - not someone is dead wrong, not someone was in an accident or learned of bad news wrong.  My world just went inexplicably bad when I received a message from my oldest son.  And that's all I'm going to say.

Later in the afternoon I did go visit my parents, and we had a nice visit...I miss seeing them more, and I hope I'm able to spend some extra time with them after this next week. After that, Amber and I went up to the new restaurant here in town, and Shawn and Mary happened to stop by too.  We had a nice visit with them.

After that we came home, and I watched some television.  I tried to sleep, but I was restless and really didn't get much.  I think I'm going to church service, and then I think I'm going to get a hike in at Black Hawk State Park.  I think I need a good walk in the woods today.
