First period I discussed gravy; second period I discussed cranberries. Another food that reminds me of a specific place and Thanksgiving of Mr. Bizarri yesteryear is what think is called ambrosia salad. If I have this wrong, then let me know, but this salad had coconut and marshmellows and mandarin oranges, and I think perhaps candied cherries. The place that this salad always appeared on Thanksgiving was what I referred to Grandma and Aunt Kate. Grandma's name was actually Lena Fox, and she would have been my great-great grandmother, as she was my grandfather Bizarri's mom. And Aunt Kate honestly I think was just a friend of my great-mother. I don't think she was a relative at all, but we always called her Aunt Kate. There house was in Moline, not too far from a little restaurant called the Belgium Village, which isn't too far from the Old Towne Bakery, which has the best sugar cookies on the planet. So in effect, Grandma and Aunt Kate's house was near the Old Towne district of Moline. Now when I was a child, that was a big deal because we were going to the city. All other holidays were rural - either Taylor Ridge or Reynolds for my mom's side of the family, or my Bizarri grandparents lived outside of Coal Valley. So that's my story of how some holiday foods represent a place or people in our lives as we grow up.
