Sunday, November 15

I officiated a youth basketball tournament at the BettPlex today (Iowa).  There were masks being warn by spectators, but there was virtually no social distancing.  In addition, players were not wearing masks, nor were officials wearing masks.  There were hand sanitizer stations around the complex.  In my mind, I can't understand how Iowa thinks basketball with players without masks is safe.  I can't believe healthcare workers and infections disease experts think this type of activity would be safe.  So why did I do it?  First, I really thought everyone would have masks on; next, if my school district and community believes it's okay for me to be in a 20-feet by 24-feet classroom with 14-18 students, then it should be okay for me to work four basketball games and make $100.  I wrestle with whether or not I'm being hypocritical, though.  Then I saw an email from an area Superintendent to his staff, and basically the explanation boiled down to this.  Remote learning is hard - too hard for some families.  And remote learning may be less safe - perhaps less safe for many families.  Basically, the increased risk of exposure to school employees by students is warranted because of the positive benefits to students and their families.  If I could just hear one damn administrator be truthful and honest with school employees and say this, maybe I would feel better.  Of course, I then would like to hear that same administrator say, "And we will be rewarding this effort of school employees with additional compensation for their additional efforts and increased exposure risk."
