Monday, November 30

7:32 p.m. - It was back to school today, and before school I learned that a good friend of mine experienced a tough weekend, as his father passed away.  The day itself was okay...I think staff and students are just trying to get through each day; it's almost like wading through mud.  Mrs. Mitola was back, and she only has until December 9th when her student teaching experience is over.  I did decide to shake up the English III course content a little and do some things differently, which will hopefully help December go by a little faster.  I'm still missing a lot of students each day either because of quarantine requirements or just choosing to learn remotely.

The most recent surge has slowed down, but three days ago was Thanksgiving, so look to mid-December to late-December for the surge to pick up again.  I just wonder if the numbers can go down before the next surge arrives.

Friday, November 27

11:13 p.m.  Yesterday, Thanksgiving was nice.  I dropped off some mashed potatoes and a bottle of egg nog at my parents, and Amber and I traveled to her parents for lunch for her immediate family.  Later in the day we drove over the new bridge and lost some money playing slots at the casino.  We then came home and watched the Hallmark Channel.  I did get a little exercise in, as I took my own turkey trot jog around town.

Today, I got a few little things completed around the house, and then I went for a little nordic ski walk.  Then I pretty much parked my butt on the recliner - watched Illini win a close basketball game; watched the Irish win a good football game; and then watched some more Hallmark Channel with Carmen and Cole.  Amber and I and Carmen and Cole worked on some turkey day leftovers and Cole beat me in a couple of games of chess.

I think tomorrow, I'll spend some time with mom and dad and then get back home to work on some schoolwork.  It's been a nice Thanksgiving break so far.

Tuesday, November 24

3:30 p.m. Most of the dreaded things I anticipated with yesterday's visit to the vet with Lily pretty much occurred.  We expected that the vet would recommend it was time to ease Lily's physical discomfort due to cancer and the beginnings of organ failure.  We both left work early to spend just a little extra time with her before the drive.  I held her at home like she wanted to be held so many times before on the couch or recliner.  She was very good at hugging....she would turn her head and put it right under my chin and shimmy as close as possible and try to lick my face in return for a belly and/or back scratch.  And she had this little grunt, almost like a little baby pig.  Finally Amber told me we needed to go, and I knew this would be the last trip out of the house for Lily.  Before becoming sick, Lily loved to go on walks.  Her little legs were no match for any adult escorting her.  She would look for anything and everything to bark at, and every trip usually meant stopping to go potty - usually along the south drive to the school parking lot.  Meeting friends on a walk was always welcome, but Lily honestly wasn't ever a very friendly dog, and she honestly believe she could take any other dog out - even Bella and Max the neighbor dogs that are huge monster of dogs.  Our walks feature a pink leash, which of course only added to my masculinity and toughness.  Unfortunately, though, within the last couple of weeks, Lily no longer wanted to go on walks.  So from the house, we decided to take the truck for the final drive.  Lily loved riding on the console of the truck, and Amber had placed a red towel on the console so it was easier for Lily to ride there.  Since getting the truck and camper, Lily had really, really enjoyed going on camping trips.  In fact, anytime I pulled the truck and trailer in the front yard to start getting packed, Lily was ready to go.  She accompanied us on all of our trips - near and far, including to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which included the emphamis tire blowout.  Of course on trips in the truck, Lily continued to bark and grunt, and she enjoyed going back and forth to laps.  On longer trips, Lily would most likely steal a place on Amber's pillow, depriving Amber of a nap.  I had taken Lily out for a drive on Sunday afternoon because I didn't want yesterday's drive to be the only truck ride she got since we winterized the camper.  We didn't go far - just about a 5-mile square in the country and back home.  She was quiet, and she rested on the console during the trip while I rubbed her back.  I had thought about taking her out to Loud Thunder for one last trip through a campground, but without the camper it wasn't the same.  Lily's last camping trip would have been this past Halloween in Indian Meadows, and even then she really didn't have an interest in going on long walks.  As a campground dog, though, when she was feeling better, she of course had to bark and anyone and everyone that walked by, especially if it was another dog.  After leaving home we stopped at the insurance place in Edgington to allow Kourtney to see Lily for what we expected to be one last time.  That wasn't easy, as the tears flowed for me.  Lily was excited to see Kourtney and went up to the window to get a pet with her tail wagging excitedly.

We then headed to Milan, as Amber suggested we needed to stop and get Lily a treat.  One thing Lily never lost, even through her recent health issues, was her appetite and interest in begging for people food.  In her world, dog food really was for other dogs.  Lily really had perfected the art of begging, even at family gatherings with folks she didn't know as well as immediate family.  The thing was that she was hard to turn down...the light, sharp bark and a wagging tail with paws extended up on the chair was a very good routine, and the efforts generally were rewarded.  So Amber and I went through the drive thru, which was unusually packed for 3:15 in the afternoon, but we ordered a plain hamburger for Lily, which she was visibly appreciative for, even though she was interested in any fries.

Then our journey featured our last stop at the vet clinic on Andalusia road.  The clinic is small and the people are very good; despite COVID, they allowed all of us to come in, and Amber carried Lily in with what Amber and I would be our last time together...which meant the tears would now flow steadily.  As was similar recollections with other animals, nerves seem to kick in which also occurred with Lily, and all of the sudden she seems more lively than she had been in recent weeks.  This view, of course, allows doubt to creep in, "Are we doing the right thing?"

The vet performed a quality of life check, and while the fluid around Lily's heart hadn't really increased much, her liver had enlarged quite a bit, and the vet determined that this along with her cancer was likely causing all the discomfort she had been experiencing.  She, then, confirmed what we feared but knew in our hearts was the best choice, which was to put our Lily to sleep and ease her pains and discomfort.  We could have opted to take her home; perhaps request some pain medications or tried some experimental something or other, but that decision would have been for the adult humas in the room, not for the little beautiful canine hospice patient.

The sedative hurts.  So the vet and the assistant held Lily while the injection was completed, and then Amber and I had a few minutes to hold Lily - just the three of us while the sedative took effect and Amber and I bawled uncontrollably. Soon Lily calmed, the panting stopped, her breaths shallowed, her eyes mostly closed, and her little pink wet tongue drooped out.  She was ready to cross what my mom often refers to as the "rainbow bridge".

I would have stayed with Lily for the dreadful "blue syringe", but Amber was ready to say her last goodbye so we both gave Lily a hug and a pat, and I gave her a kiss on her head through my mask.  I hope she appreciated our final attempts to tell her how much we loved her and would miss her.

We understood the rest...the vet and assistant would administer the medication, and soon Lily's heart would stop and she would make her way across the bridge.  We paid the vet bill and agreed to pick up Lily's ashes later, likely the following week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  We made our way out of the little clinic, into the truck, stilly crying uncontrollably, and drove home in quiet agonizing sorrow.

I didn't sleep well last night....I woke up startled out of bed because I thought I heard Lily having one of her "coughing episodes" that had been worsening over the past few weeks.  I looked for her at the foot of the bed on Amber's side, but she wasn't there and I remembered why.  I couldn't go back to sleep; it was just after midnight.

Sunday, November 22

9:32 a.m. - I woke up at 3:30 a.m. and couldn't go back to sleep, so I worked in Santa's workshop and got a lot done.  Lily is not doing well; I was hoping she could comfortably make it through Thanksgiving, but I'm not so sure.

2:18 p.m. - COVID 19 still bad; President Trump still saying he won the election; Bears don't play this weekend, so I don't have to be frustrated about that.  I got a ski-walk in and then ate supper early.  I hope tonight features and early bed time and a nice, long night's sleep.  I spent some time getting back in the teaching grove.  I refreshed my brain on making a Google Meets video and creating an agenda and scheduling the next day's agenda on the stream.  I'm not planning on assigning much work, if any, over the next two days.  I just want to get to Thanksgiving break and then will start exploring Indigenous American literature on November 30.

Saturday, November 21

11:20 a.m. -  The morning has been about grandparent stuff...at one point, all three of the toddlers were here - Brinley, Brooklyn, and Tucker.  I did manage to get the outside lights hung, so that was good.  I'm thinking a little stretch and light lift and then a little ski walk exercise is in my future before the Notre Dame football game comes on.  Then I think I'm going to set up Santa's workshop and start wrapping gifts.  Last night, I worked a varsity girls basketball game, and I met my new partners that I'm scheduled with for at least a few games.  Mark and Brian both care a lot about officiating and getting calls right, so we'll get along just fine.  Being on the court and being in sports was definitely something that felt good.  That was the first time officiating 3-man mechanics since last February.  We have another game coming up on Tuesday at Assumption.

Thanksgiving Food #5 7th Period

So yes, turtle, was mentioned.  I must admit that I'm trying to imagine the display of turtle on a plate on the Thanksgiving table, and I'm curious.  We know what a turkey looks like; we know what a ham looks like; I'm curious how turtle might be presented.

Speaking of presentation, which I know is a little south of the topic of food, but just the idea of presentation almost is as exciting as the the meal.  Almost like a tree that has all the packages underneath...it's the images of the tree with the packages that add something magical.  I think just before the tradition of the eating occurs, the magic that is the presentation of the meal with everyone around the table appeals to me.  Can I pause for a moment here?

I wonder if there are any "old person" traditions that must occur at your Thanksgiving that get most of the young folks rolling their eyes.  For example, I've heard of some families going around the table and stating at least one thing they are thankful for this year.  That seems okay, but I'm guessing you silly teenagers may have an eye roll...like "C'mon Grandma, do we have to do that again?"  Or is there a special Thanksgiving blessing that must be said by a certain person?  Or does the head of the table and family get to carve the turkey right there on the table as the meal starts?  I hope if your family has some little tidbit of specialness that you share because at my age, I love to hear about all the unique things that happen at Thanksgiving...even if they are a little quirky.

As far as food goes, getting back to the topic, I've heard Mrs. Mitola mention green bean casserole, and I think that has become more of a tradition that I remember growing up, so I wonder what traditions are more modern when it comes to food.

Thanksgiving Food #4 4th Period

So today I've discussed gravy, cranberries, and Ambrosia salad.  Can I say now, though, that I really don't think turkey is one of my favorites.  Actually I prefer ham, but I must admit that a slow roasted turkey in the oven looks and smells amazing.  For some reason, though, the taste of turkey doesn't really appeal to me.  Speaking of taste and going completely off topic, I feel horrible for COVID sufferers that won't be able to smell and taste their Thanksgiving dinners next week.  That wouldn't be any fun at all.  Okay...back to topic.  So turkey really isn't my thing, and others today have mentioned prime rib for Thanskgiving, and others said ribs, and I'm just wondering if other students have a different sort of meat dish than maybe the traditional turkey.  I haven't heard yet from anyone that has duck or goose or venison, even though I know there is a lot of hunting in this area of this wildlife.  Is there such thing as a venison roast?  No one yet either has mentioned seafood, even though one person last period did mention that boiled shrimp is often an appetizer to munch upon prior to the feast at his house.

Also, I wonder does anyone in her do the deep fryer thing with their turkey's or maybe slow roast grill the turkey or some other type of cooking of the bird that maybe would appeal to me more.

And on another topic, isn't there scientific evidence that suggests eating turkey makes us sleepy?  Isn't there something about the chemical make-up of turkey?  Does the same thing exist for ham or other foods.  I know we all feel a little sleepy after eating, but I wonder about foods that actually induce sleeping a little more than others.

I say this because as a kid I remember my older uncles and other relatives always falling asleep after the meal while watching the Lions or Cowboys on televsion.

Thanksgiving Food #3 - 3rd Period

First period I discussed gravy; second period I discussed cranberries.  Another food that reminds me of a specific place and Thanksgiving of Mr. Bizarri yesteryear is what think is called ambrosia salad.  If I have this wrong, then let me know, but this salad had coconut and marshmellows and mandarin oranges, and I think perhaps candied cherries.  The place that this salad always appeared on Thanksgiving was what I referred to Grandma and Aunt Kate.  Grandma's name was actually Lena Fox, and she would have been my great-great grandmother, as she was my grandfather Bizarri's mom.  And Aunt Kate honestly I think was just a friend of my great-mother.  I don't think she was a relative at all, but we always called her Aunt Kate.  There house was in Moline, not too far from a little restaurant called the Belgium Village, which isn't too far from the Old Towne Bakery, which has the best sugar cookies on the planet.  So in effect, Grandma and Aunt Kate's house was near the Old Towne district of Moline.  Now when I was a child, that was a big deal because we were going to the city.  All other holidays were rural - either Taylor Ridge or Reynolds for my mom's side of the family, or my Bizarri grandparents lived outside of Coal Valley.  So that's my story of how some holiday foods represent a place or people in our lives as we grow up.

Thanksgiving Food #2 Second Period

So another deeply Thanksgiving food for me is cranberries.  Admittedly, when I was younger, I didn't care for cranberries, but now I look forward to them.  I suppose part of the reason is that cranberries aren't really served any other time of the year, at least in my circle of family Thanksgiving treats.  Now I know that cranberries can come out of a can, but these aren't really cranberries, are they.  I mean how festive does it look to use a can opener to release the food which slides out of the can in this jiggly wiggly purplish mold looking thing.  I do realize that the food is indeed cranberries, but it's a modern substitute that just doesn't work.

So I'm talking about cranberries that are made from scratch cranberries....and if you have ever eaten a raw cranberry, you know that while it is a superfood rich with lots of good nutrition, raw cranberries are challenging to consume.  So like my last post last period expressing how gravy isn't exactly nutritional, cranberries admittedly get a lot of sugar and other sweet additives that make the dish less than healthy.

I've never made cranberries from scratch, but my guess is that they are boiled and then strained to remove the thicker skin.  If I'm wrong about this, then somebody make sure to correct me.  Now I'm not sure if gelatin is added but, what I'm looking for is sort of soupy cranberries that are dark reddish-purplish and are wonderful.  Plus, just the color of cranberries reminds me of the holidays.

Thanksgiving Food #1 1st Period

Because I'm older, Thanksgiving for me is a time of reflections on what the holiday use to be, so I'm going to go with something that perhaps you may find odd - gravy.  My mom's side of the family were old school, so everything was made from scratch, including the gravy.  Now I have tried to make gravy before, and my effort was awful.  And you can by gravy at home.  In fact, a little side note is that my brother-in-law works at Kraft-Hines in Muscatine and apparently his plant makes like the majority of gravy that is sold in the United States, at least that's what he says.  But let's get back to the topic.

So gravy comes in light gravy or dark gravy right, and I remember we always use to have a choice.  And gravy obviously goes with mashed potatoes - homemade, not out of the box.  But I think gravy also goes well with the homemade stuffing.  In fact, homemade stuffing and gravy really is something for me that is pretty much Thanksgiving exclusive, unless there is also a turkey at Christmas.  So Thanksgiving for me is not the total deal if there isn't homemade stuffing and homemade gravy.

But some folks don't stop there, right?  I've seen family members pour gravy over the mashed potatoes, the stuffing, and the turkey.  Gravy practically everywhere.  And let's be honest, homemade gravy isn't exactly a healthy food items.  Flour, fat drippings, salt and other seasons basically is the recipe.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (11/19)
In the media this week there is a lot of coverage of the emergence of two vaccines for COVID-19 that are reportedly 95% effective as reported by the companies that have created the vaccines.  Everyone is saying that this is great news, and it's definitely not bad news, but there's no vaccine arriving tomorrow that is going to help us, and it doesn't appear that the vaccines will beat us to cold and flu seasons which seems to really ramp up as winter weather arrives.  I hope the idea of effective vaccines is okay and all the good news reporting isn't overblown.  There is no doubt that we need some good news, but the news needs to be truthful and reliable, so most people are willing and ready to take the vaccine.

Wednesday, November 18

5:17 a.m. - I woke up early again...seems to be a trend.  I wake up around 3:00 a.m., and then I start thinking about something and can't fall back to sleep.  So I went out to the living room, watched a little CNN, finished up reading A Christmas Carol, and then balanced my checkbook - which I realized and caught a couple of mistakes.  So basically, I was Scrooge today...irritated and up early, catching up on the news, and settling my accounts.  On the other hand, I'm hoping to observe Christmas Past, Present, and Future in my life!

In other news, the IHSA released information last night that seals the fate of starting basketball in Illinois for the rest of 2020.  The IHSA apparently has given up its fight since the Governor rolled Illinois back from Phase 4 mitigation efforts to Phase 3.  He did state that schools could remain open with full instruction by their choice but that most schools were going full remote to assist in decreasing the spread of the virus.  From what I understand from our school district, CUSD#300 will avoid going full remote unless there just aren't enough adults left to run the building, even if it means subs filling in spots - administrators, teachers, paras, custodians, kitchen, bus drivers...whatever it takes to keep bodies in enough of the roles we are going to do.  I'm not necessarily saying that the emphasis on providing and education to the students isn't admirable, but the cost to the school district employees and healthcare system is taking a back seat, and I fear the long-term effects of that cost.  The latest information Mr. Miller has released is that CUSD#300 won't do anything different until November 30, which is the Monday after returning from Thanksgiving break.  I could see CUSD#300 trying to continue to keep the building open, I could see going back to the hybrid model, and I could see falling into full remote for the days in December leading up to Christmas/New Year's break.

Tuesday, November 17

7:00 a.m.  The weather is still sunny; in fact the weather is suppose to be fairly nice all week before the weekend turns out to be a complete washout.  I had hoped to see Chase last night, but he ended up hanging out with a buddy.  So it was a night of watching the Bears bumble through another poor performance...not sure if they have enough to even make a go of the rest of the season.  COVID 19 is still a huge story in the news; President Trump still hasn't conceded the presidential election; but in a turn of events, Iowa's governor added some restrictions and essentially banned youth sports through December 10th.  For now, then, I'm still working a varsity girls contest in Dewitt on Friday evening.

Monday, November 16

7:20 a.m. - Another virus vaccine is showing even more promising results than the last one - 95% effectiveness.  Of course the everlasting cynic in me is wondering how the latest one is 5% better, but I'm sure that helped out the company's stockholders.  Today, I'm hoping for a quiet day.  I'm going to try to get some things done at school, and I think I'm going to get a different book - I need something more interesting and timely - maybe I'll get my hands on A Christmas Carol.

Sunday, November 15

I officiated a youth basketball tournament at the BettPlex today (Iowa).  There were masks being warn by spectators, but there was virtually no social distancing.  In addition, players were not wearing masks, nor were officials wearing masks.  There were hand sanitizer stations around the complex.  In my mind, I can't understand how Iowa thinks basketball with players without masks is safe.  I can't believe healthcare workers and infections disease experts think this type of activity would be safe.  So why did I do it?  First, I really thought everyone would have masks on; next, if my school district and community believes it's okay for me to be in a 20-feet by 24-feet classroom with 14-18 students, then it should be okay for me to work four basketball games and make $100.  I wrestle with whether or not I'm being hypocritical, though.  Then I saw an email from an area Superintendent to his staff, and basically the explanation boiled down to this.  Remote learning is hard - too hard for some families.  And remote learning may be less safe - perhaps less safe for many families.  Basically, the increased risk of exposure to school employees by students is warranted because of the positive benefits to students and their families.  If I could just hear one damn administrator be truthful and honest with school employees and say this, maybe I would feel better.  Of course, I then would like to hear that same administrator say, "And we will be rewarding this effort of school employees with additional compensation for their additional efforts and increased exposure risk."

Saturday, November 14

5:53 p.m. - I finished splitting the wood, and then Mr. Strachan and I loaded it all up and took it to his place.  After coming home, I then got my basketball gear loaded into my car.  I'm going to work some youth games over at the BettPlex tomorrow.  I'm only working four games, but it will be nice to get on the floor.  I'm sure after about two minutes I'll be tired of the stupid comments from spectators and dumb attitudes of players, but it will still be nice to get up and down the floor a little and earn a little extra cash.  And today, I just finished watching Notre Dame play a good game and beat a pretty good Boston College team...for the rest of the night, I'm thinking Hallmark Channel.

It's Friday, the 13th of November

5:43 a.m. - Today is indeed Friday the 13th.  I just want it to be a short day.  It's cold, but the I74 Bridge westbound is open!  Having not been to school the past two days, I wonder what things will be like when I return today.  The mode of the day is to stay away from students and avoid contracting the virus; if I do that, I suppose the day will be considered a good one.

Thursday, November 12

7:42 p.m. - Wow did I get a lot done.  I went to the doctor and got my check up, and then I went to the hospital and got blood work and urine analysis, and I think everything looks good.  I weighed six more pounds, so that irritated me, but I guess it could have been worse.  I didn't get my shin guards fixed, which was a but upsetting, but I have another idea for that.  I went xmas shopping at Farm-n-Fleet, Southpark Mall, and HyVee.  I'm pretty sure that I'm pretty close to being completely done.  I'll figure that out tomorrow.  When I got home, Amber and I went to Kenzie's house and had tacos with the Harrison girls.  Oh, and I did get a walk in at Blackhawk State Park, and that walk was nice.  The park staff has installed new signage which was handy, and there has been some work clearing trees from the trails.  Now, I think I'll watch some football and hopefully get a good night's sleep.
