6:38 a.m. - We survived yesterday.  It was still a great day because I was around basketball, around my friends, and we made a little cash.  The first game of the day, though, was a shit-show.  And when you have the worst two teams of a tournament playing a game after they are tired - mentally and physically - it's typically going to be a shit-show.  I'd like to be able to explain that we officials can make a 7th-8th place game prettier, but it's just impossible.  And I'm not faulting the effort of the players or the coaches; they give a great effort, sometimes trying too hard.  The result is just a mess.  The evening game wasn't a whole lot better in terms of being a mess.  The teams were more skilled, but Orion was out of sorts after losing the semi-final on Monday and then being without their starting point guard.

Today I'm waking up to what hopefully will be a simple, quiet day.  I just want to relax.  I have some things I'd like to get done, but I'd like to get them done at my place while also enjoying the day as well.  I'd like to get to mom and dad's and pay them a visit and help mom with some barn things.  I'd like to get the hot tub set up.  I'd also like to get the door handles in the HHR fixed.  I really don't care about partying  and going crazy on New Year's Eve.  I may go ahead and have a couple beers I've had saved over the holidays, but staying home will suit me just fine.

In other news, while we were officiating last night, Illinois won its football bowl game by beating Tennessee.  That's a huge win!

Tuesday, December 30

6:16 a.m. - Two down, one to go.  I really enjoy being around holiday high school basketball and tournaments , but yesterday was tiring on the legs.  We have one more day today.  I still am not satisfied with my leg strength, and I think losing weight has a lot to do with it.  I just need to get lighter.  I'm also going to try to get in a jogging and/or biking routine to work on some stamina as well - and assist my effort in losing some weight.

We had two competitive games yesterday, and last night's game was a really good one at Erie.

Today, we repeat yesterday - a 2:30 game at Sherrard and a 7 p.m. game at Erie.   And again like yesterday, both games will be competitive and challenging.  The first game will feature two teams that will want to end the season with a win, while the second game will be Orion and Galena, two teams that lost yesterday but are really good.

Monday, December 29

7:47 a.m. - Yesterday, I got the hot tub off the back deck and out of the weather.  I really needed to get that done because the forecast called for much colder temps and high winds in the afternoon.  So around 11 a.m., Jack helped me carry the hot tub into the garage, and I left it here to dry out.  Around noon, everyone else began to arrive for the Massey Christmas - our last Christmas of the season.  It was a nice event - good food (although not the traditional Christmas dinner), lots of conversation, some more gifts, kids running around having fun, and a little euchre on a fold out table.  That's how I remember Christmas in the past.  The rest of the afternoon and night was spent watching football - the Bears had a chance to beat the 49ers, but the final play of the game was an incomplete pass.  

Today...back to basketball.  We have two games - one at 2:30, and the other at 7 p.m.  We have the same schedule again tomorrow as well.  According to Amber, it's Christmas tear down day, so that will be something I'll be working on this morning before getting ready to head out to officiate.

Sunday, December 28

7:43 a.m. - Yesterday was a bit disappointing, but okay.  My right hamstring still isn't where I want it to be.  I just still can't cut loose and run during a basketball game like I want to, which is frustrating.  I fear it's just going to be a battle against my leg the whole rest of the season.  Plus, I really need to lose weight...a lot of weight. 

We had two games yesterday - one in Erie at its tournament, and one at Sherrard in its tournament.  The games both went fine.  I really like our crew and appreciate being able to work with Marcus and Tony regularly.  It's not only comforting to work with two guys you can trust, it's also fun to be with them on and off the court.  Being with my crew and watching basketball and officiating basketball and being around basketball players and coaches

Today, we have our last Christmas celebration for the Masseys here at our house.  I hope that's the only event, but I'd like to get to my mom's house to see what needs to be done there.  I also need to get the hot tub drained and moved before the temps get cold again later today.  The Bears are on tonight, and I hope I can watch them. 

Tomorrow we have Payson-Seymour vs. Annawan at Sherrard and then we have Riverdale vs. Orion at Erie.

Saturday, December 27

5:33 a.m. - There has now been a week of Christmas break, which means we only have a week left.  I don't want to go back.  And I'm not saying I just would like a longer break...I really, really don't want to go back there.  I just want to be done and move onto something more comfortable and enjoyable.  I don't want to have to live up to the expectations of everyone.

Yesterday was another busy day but not quite as busy as other days have been.  I didn't get any exercise, but I had planned that to give my legs a complete break.  I'm interested to see how the legs function today.  I hope I can be strong and avoid my legs seizing up.  I did attend the funeral of Jim Westpfahl, but I didn't go to the luncheon afterwards.  I also took Amber to the casino, and we picked up our free gifts.  In the evening the Harrison grandchildren arrived for a few hours, and then I went to bed.

Today, we have games at Sherrard and Erie.  The games should be fairly comfortable, but that usually means that there's a good chance that it won't be comfortable.  I'm driving today, though, so hopefully we will get through the games and be done.

Friday, December 26th

6:03 a.m. - Yesterday was okay.  I started my morning with an hour-long walk around the village, and then I jumped in the hot tub.  After that, Amber and I headed to Jack and Rhonda's for a nice steak dinner with Adam.  That visit also included some cards, which is always fun.  Then Amber and I stopped home to pick up some gifts that were for Ava, so we then headed to the Southwells and spent a little time there.  Then it was back home to drop off Amber (after visiting the Edgington casino), as she wasn't feeling very well.  I then headed to mom and dad's and visited with my mom and Bob and Darren.  It wasn't a long visit, but it was nice to sit around the table on Christmas day and chit-chat.  I'm glad I did, as I wasn't aware that Darren was going to be leaving today to go to Tennessee.  Then I came home and watched a little football and fell to sleep.

And today?  I'd like to get some exercise in again, and I have some clean-up things to complete.  I also have to get the garbage and recycle containers out on the edge of the driveway.  Then I need to get to a funeral for Jim Westpfahl, and then Amber and I are headed to Bally's to play a little and pick up our free gift.  Of course "free" is a relative term, because I certainly spend enough money there to legitimately consider nothing free.  Tonight?  Hmmm.....I'm not sure.

Thursday, December 25th - Merry Christmas!

7:47 a.m. - Merry Christmas everyone!  Yesterday was 90% PERFECT!  It was a full day, but Amber and I brought the holidays and joy to our families.  We started the day with breakfast and gifts for the families of the Kiddoo girls - Karrigan, Kenzie, Kourtney and all of their "kin"...except Michael, who had to work.  The wrapping paper and festive boxes were flying and toys and clothes and other gifts were opened and cherished.  Kids were running around and playing and adults chit-chatted and had some laughs.  Amber had a couple of games to play with the kids too, and Grandma Rhonda and Grandpa Jack were here to celebrate too.   A couple hours later, Cole and Carmen, Tyler, and Caleb arrived.  There was a little lunch for them and then more gifts.  I think the mark was hit again with those folks - the highlight being the "drum set" for Caleb.  We had purchased a stand and symbol along with five buckets, some drum sticks, and a stool to make it all completed.  And boy did he play a lot on his drum set.  It was awesome.  Then we all hopped in our cars and headed to Taylor Ridge United Methodist Church for Christmas Eve service.  Pastor Jacob was a little long-winded, but it was still nice.  And through the fog and mist that settled in, we went to mom and dad's for some potato soup, oyster soup, sandwiches and more gifts.  It wasn't a big gathering, but it was a nice gathering, and we ended the night with mom, dad, Darren, Greg, and I playing some euchre to end the night.  Amber wasn't feeling well, so Greg brought me home.  Before Tyler, Carmen, and Caleb left, I took Caleb out to the barn to visit with the "neigh-neighs".  And the night wrapped up with Greg getting me home, so I had a chance to talk with him.  Did I mention the day was 90% PERFECT!  I'm so happy that we were able to give a Christmas day to our folks.  The 10% missing was missing spending time with Chase too, but I did send him some gifts, and I did send him a card with a message I hope will reach his heart.

Today?  It's a quiet Christmas morning, and having leftovers from yesterday for breakfast was awesome.  I'd like to get in some exercise, and I'd like to get into the hot tub.  I think we are headed to Jack and Rhonda's for lunch and more euchre.  After that, we'll head to the casino.  I'm not sure if I'll make it over to mom and dad's, but I'll try.

Wednesday, December 24 - Happy Birthday Mom!

4:01 a.m. - Yup, I'm on break from school, and I'm still up at 4:01 a.m.  I fell to sleep early last night after a busy day.  So, I guess I'm up now.  

Yesterday, I did get some time in the hot tub with Amber before our day really got started.  I also spent a lot of time wrapping gifts and getting envelopes ready.  Then I went to Reason's Locker and picked up some bacon and breakfast sausage.  Then it was off to Aledo to do a little more Xmas shopping to try to finish up.   And I did.  Today is Christmas Eve Day, and for Amber and I, that means it's Christmas with our kids.  So this is pretty much the calm before the chaos this morning.

Prior to going to Aledo, I needed to stop at the farm and drop off something for my dad.  As I was walking out the door, I snagged up a couple of Busch beers out of mom's fridge, and then I drove over to the Reynolds Cemetery to pay a visit to Bill and the rest of the Wespfahls.  I don't visit the cemetery much, and it just so happens that as I was leaving, it looked like workers were getting ready to dig a grave for Jim Westpfahl, who passed away this week.  I did spend a few minutes reflecting and thanking Bill and the Westpfahls for all they did for me - recently and in my past.  I really miss them and the family holidays that we had.  

After getting back from Aledo, I finished up my wrapping and other items.  Before that, I did go over to the school and managed to get in some exercises.  I'm still not running like I want to, but perhaps that is still yet to come.  Last night was just a little television watching and then off to bed.

I hope today is a good day.  I hope my efforts to help Christmas be special are not disappointing today.  My efforts were rushed this season, so I hope it all works out.  What I really am looking forward to is just being with family...I want to be present and joyful and show through my words and actions how much I appreciate them.  I hope we get to play some cards and have some laughs.  One person that will likely be missing is my son, Chase.  He and I haven't reunited since the incident that occurred over the summer, but I think of him often.  I did get him some Christmas items and tried to send him a message.  I'm not sure if he will even accept the items, but I need to try.  Maybe next year, I will get a chance to be with all of my children.  While Christmas is a wonderful, beautiful time, that doesn't make it perfect, and that's okay - it's still a wonderful, beautiful time.

7:08 a.m. - Yesterday was a shopping extravaganza - lots of money, lots of people, lots of driving.  I really shouldn't wait until the last minute to do Christmas shopping, but it's been an unusually busy time period leading up to yesterday.  The combination of time lost through officiating and ICE and time needed to care for mom and snowstorms really took an impact on my time.  So today will be needed to wrap gifts and fill stockings.

We didn't win the Powerball again.  Dang it.  I guess that means I'll have to try again today.  I hope to also get some exercise in and get in the hot tub.

  • Jan. 28 - PTO meeting at Andalusia 6 p.m.
  • Feb. 25 -  PTO meeting at TRE at 6 p.m.
