Monday, August 14th - Back to School

6:09 a.m. - It's raining, I screwed up my coffee this morning, and the internet is slow - it must be back to school day.  I guess it had to happen sometime.  One of these years, though, I'll be staying home on back to school day...I can dream, can't I?

Yesterday was a battle, but it was a good battle.  First, there was the annual Grandma Rhonda boat and fishing excursion at Lake George.  There were seven adults and six grandchildren under the age 5 on the pontoon boat, and all six wanted to catch a fish.  Unfortunately know fish were caught, but fortunately all adults survived.  We got some pictures, made some memories, and had some smiles.

After that, the weather appeared to be working against me....it started to rain.  I ended up at least getting the pool cleaned and swept, and then Amber and the Harrison grandchildren headed back home to the Harrison home.  I took the opportunity around noon to go visit with my parents and Darren before he headed back home, and it's always nice to sit down at the table and have a visit.  After that, I dropped off a little gift I had purchased for Shawn, and then it was back home to try and mow the yard.  The conditions weren't great, but I made an attempt any way and got it done.  After that, Amber wanted to go to the casino, so we had supper at the new sports bar, played some slots, donated our money to Bally's and called it a night.  So all-in-all, the day was a success.

Today....back-to-school.  I'm an old veteran grump of a teacher, so I don't want enthusiasm, I don't want excitement, I don't want all the "new-start" crap.  I just want time to get ready for students on Wednesday.  And no, I don't want "professional development".  And yet, today, I'm going to likely be faced with all of those things.  Oh..."How was your summer"?  "Are you ready to return?"  "It's going to be a great year this year."  Ugh.  Don't get me wrong...there is a place for all those things, and I remember a day when I used to be excited and nervous and full of enthusiasm....just not there now.  It's not anyone's fault...I'm just old.  I am excited about tomorrow being pay day, because the summer has left me a little short on cash.  Oh, and I'm not excited at all about having to go back to school tonight for "backpack night".  This has replaced "open house", but I'm pretty confident I won't like that any more.  This is another "requirement", though, so I will do my job.

Keep in mind, don't let this gloom and doom paint too much of a dreaded picture.  Mentally, I'm ready to return.  The summer was good and eventful.  The only real regret is that I didn't get to spend much time at all with my children, and I won't be able to get that time back.  Other than that, though, there was adventure and summer fun and friends and family and very few bad things, and for that I'm blessed.
