Thursday, August 30

6:44 a.m. - I was able to get everything fit into yesterday.  The school day went fine and all the students in attendance made a trip to the library and grabbed a book.  I met with the junior high principal about ideas for the new writing teachers.  I got the camper set up at Loud Thunder.  I went to mom and dad's and we got the hay loaded in the barn with help from a couple of the Gorham boys.  I then went to Shawn's and grabbed some firewood, returned home to have a little supper and chat with Amber, and then went back to the camper to spend the night.  The weather was perfect, the moon was full, the silence was awesome.  I watched some Green Acres and Hogan's Heroes and then went to bed.

I got up around 5:30 to a perfect morning.  The temps were cool...actually ran the fireplace heater in the camper a little.  I made a cup of coffee and watched some news.  Then it was a drive home and watch the sunrise.  I made it home to take the garbage to the curb, and now I'm getting read for the day - a day that is a Tropical Thursday!  

It's going to be a busy day at school with SAT writing pre-assessment and individual conferences with students.  And then it's off to Prophetstown to officiate volleyball.  And then hopefully, it's back to the campground for a quiet night.  A friend of mine might be there, and I'm hoping he's got a campfire going...may be some campfire conversation, a cold beverage, and then another quiet night in the camper.  One of these days, I'll be retired and won't have to worry about going to school!  For now, it's okay.

Wednesday, August 30

5:51 .a.m. - Yesterday was another productive day.  At school we had our first journal write of the year for the English III courses.  And I even read them a little children's book to try to have a little fun and rekindle their love of reading.  Yesterday afternoon and evening the volleyball match between Riverdale and Monmouth-Roseville was pretty evenly matched in the varsity contest, so that one went three sets.  It was nice to see Braeden again.  And honestly, it was probably good to have a competitive match...volleyball is just not comfortable for me, even though it's getting more comfortable.

Today is going to be busy. It's a free read Wednesday, which is great.  Today, I'm meeting with the junior high principal to discuss writing instruction during sixth period.  Then after school, I'm getting the Eagle to the Deer Haven Campground at Loud Thunder.  I have to do that quickly, though, so I can get to my mom and dad's to help with getting hay into the barn.  I'd really like to go back to Loud Thunder and spend the night, but that depends on how the hay job goes.

Tuesday, August 29

6:40 a.m. - Yesterday was productive in a lot of ways.  I finally got an answer to the whole SAT essay test question.  Yes, there will be an essay test, and yes it will be digital.  That changes some things a little bit, so I need to think about my approach.  After getting home from a productive day at work, I hitched up the camper to the truck.  Now it's ready to go Wednesday after school to Loud Thunder.  I also learned that after I do that tomorrow, I need to get to my mom and dad's to load hay in the barn.  I'm not sure if I'll return to Loud Thunder after that for the night, but we'll see.  Also yesterday, I had my first volleyball match.  It was freshmen at Bettendorf, so it was good to start with that level and get some work.  Tonight it's a high school match at Monmouth-Roseville.  At least today I get to ride with Braeden...it will be fun to talk with him and catch up on his news.

Monday, August 28

5:12 a.m. - I think my 2023 high school volleyball officiating schedule will finally start today.  I'm scheduled to go over to Bettendorf for a freshmen match.  I heard from Braeden yesterday, and he's concerned about his new job and being able to get to matches.  I was afraid of that.  I fear I'm going to be working with different partners a lot this season.

Yesterday didn't go as planned...at all...some good, some not good.  The Harrison kids spent the night on Saturday night, and I thought they would be with us all day, but then they left mid-morning.  I also thought I was going to have to help load some hay bales into my mom's barn, but that was called off.  We did go to Rosie's party, and I did get my schoolwork done for the day. We also loaded the camper for the weekend.  I did not, though, get any exercise in, which was not good.  

Today is going to be rough getting back into the groove a full day and full week of school days.  Plus there are three volleyball matches to work.  And then Amber has surgery on her elbow Friday.   Plus, I'm taking the camper out to Loud Thunder on Wednesday afternoon.

I just looked down at my schedule, and I think junior high and high school softball is done for the year.  I'll probably keep my gear in the car for a bit longer, but maybe I won't have to use it!  I can definitely put all my IHSA stuff back into storage.

Sunday, August 27

8:01 a.m. - Brinley and Brooklyn spent the night last night, and I'm not sure when they are going home.  I know we have Rosie's party this afternoon, and I know I'm helping load some hay into my mom's barn after that.  I'm not sure what the rest of the day is going to be like.

Yesterday, I did get some exercise, and I did open up the camper to let it air out and cool down.  I also was able to watch some football...Notre Dame looked pretty good, but they played NAVY, who isn't very good.  

Maybe today I'll load up some clothes in the camper for this coming weekend.  I'm taking the camper out to Loud Thunder on Wednesday night to get it set up for the weekend.

Saturday, August 26

7:22 a.m.  Well, the football game between the Rockets and the Comets didn't go very well, and I didn't get to see Chase, but everything else yesterday went pretty well.  I got my teeth cleaned with relative ease, and then I got home and cleaned the mower deck and proceeded to mow the yard.  And then I got in the pool and chit chatted with my mom and Aunt Mary and later with Brandon and the Baker kids.  And then later we went to the football game.

And today it's college football!  I'd like to get some exercise in...maybe even swim some laps in the pool.  And I might work on writing out some bills to get in the mail later this week.  Notre Dame plays at 2:30 p.m., so that's on the schedule.  My mom says they may be putting some hay in the barn, so that's on the schedule for the weekend as well.

Tomorrow I may try to get to church, and then I think we have Rosie's birthday party.

Friday, August 25

5:42 a.m. - I didn't sleep very well last night.  I need to get some exercise this morning before going to the dentist.  And then I may meet up with Chase somehow.  And then sometime tonight we are headed to the home football game.  And there is no school today again - third day in a row.  It's been a weird week.

Yesterday was a pool day.  Had some of Rhonda and Jack's friends over, and Kristi came, and my mom came too.  Luke was here, so I spent most of the day with Luke.  We went to the buffet and casino afterwords....didn't go very well for me.  Then I watched coverage of Former President Trump being booked in a Fulton County Georgia jail.  They listed him at 6'3" and 215 lbs - what a joke.  Doesn't that really tell the story of his whole life?

Thursday, August 24

7:21 a.m. - Yesterday was basically a day off.  I did get a few things done in the morning, took a little bike ride and did some exercise swimming in the pool, and then I prepared for a pool day.  We had Jack and Rhonda, Mom and Mary, Karrigan, Luke, Brinley, Brooklyn, Rosie, Tucker, and Kourtney.  Today there will also be some guests in the pool, so I'll go check the pool this morning and see if I need to do some vacuuming.  At the end of the day yesterday, Patrick brought over supper - ribs he had smoked and cooked, baked beans, and corn casserole.  The meal was awesome.  The one thing about yesterday that didn't work out was that Chase and his friend Alex didn't make it over.  He called about 5:00, but by that time the pool day was over, we were eating supper, and I didn't think it was right to have him and Alex over for a meal that wasn't intended for them.  If it would have just been Amber and me, I would have told him to come on over and get in the pool.  I don't like those situations, but he had told me and my mom he would be there in the afternoon, and we both tried to reach him yesterday to find out the situation, but he didn't respond.

Today...I think is going to be a bit like yesterday.  Maybe Amber and I will have a date night at the buffet and casino tonight down at Bally's.

Wednesday, August 23

6:47 a.m. - It's official; no school today or tomorrow.  Apparently there may be school on Friday - again at a 1:30 dismissal, but I have a doctor's appointment anyway.  I have a Thursday night volleyball game scheduled, but who know if that will happen?  I think I'll check with that A.D. today.

Yesterday by about 10:00 my classroom started to heat up, and then by noon, it was pretty much unbearable....just sweat and sticking to everything.  So needless to say the pool got some use again yesterday afternoon.  (I'm sure it will get some use today as well.)  After the pool time, Amber and I went to Rhythm City to join Jack, Rhonda, and Adam, as they had gone to supper before going to the casino.  And my casino efforts were going nowhere until we were just about ready to leave.  I sat at this old simple slot machine just to try my luck...in the end I ended up with over 600 free games!  Of course the payout wasn't very good on those 600 free games, but it was still pretty exciting and fun to play that many free games.  I'll never have that happen again.  

Today, Chase may be coming with his friend to swim in the pool.  I think my mom may be also coming as well, perhaps with Mary.  No activities again tonight, so I'm not sure what the evening will bring.  I do have some classwork I could do, so I may work on that a little.  I also would like to do some strength training and get some exercises...maybe some swim time.

Tuesday, August 22

6:08 a.m. - The heat continues to build in our area, and we have another 1:30 dismissal day today with the possibility of no school at all tomorrow and Thursday.  And since I have a sick day on Friday, today might be the last day of my week.  I'm trying to keep an eye on the weekend for possibly getting the Eagle out and doing a little camping.  I'm just not sure about that idea just yet.  

Last night's volleyball match was postponed; today's junior high softball game is postponed.

I did get a lot of work done yesterday at school, and I did go check on mom and dad and visited with them a bit.  And when I got home, there was action.  Rod Voss was out working on the dirt in the backyard, and the Bakers, the Southwells, and Rhonda and Jack were here cooling off in the pool.  

And then it was supper, a little reading out of the volleyball casebook, and sleep.  Karrigan and her dogs spent the night, so Sophie and Saylor are here this morning, and they always have plenty of energy.

Monday, August 21

5:27 a.m. - A big ball of hot yuck - that's the weather forecast for this week.  The hot temperatures started yesterday, and they are supposed to run all the way through Friday.  I think I'll be wearing shorts to school.  I'm supposed to work volleyball tonight and softball tomorrow...I'm not sure that softball will be happening.  This weekend is supposed to be cooler, with highs only in the 80's ... now I'm thinking about camping...I'll have to keep an eye on the weather forecast.  

Yesterday did end up being interesting.  I did get some exercise; I did get the pool cleaned; and I did get the ditch weed-wacked.  In fact, I pushed things a little and got a lot of the swamp area weed-wacked.  It was really, really hot when I got done, but it was nice to get the weeds knocked down in back.  After that, we went to Strachan's for a little going away party for Tucker and Carrie.  After that, we came back home and got in the pool with Jack, Rhonda, Karrigan and Karrigan's dogs - Sophie and Saylor.   I did get some reading of my volleyball casebook completed, and I'll probably do more of that at school today; tonight's first match of the season could be a real adventure.

Sunday, August 20

7:28 a.m. - Yesterday was a bit of a weird day.  In the morning, I planned to do a little work on the ditch project.  My neighbor Brandon had done some excavating work a few weeks ago, and there were some big clumps of sod and rocks that needed thrown into piles.  And then I took a shovel to parts of the ditch to try to help drainage occur, as I still have low spot in the south section of the property.  While I was out there, though, a neighbor I had never met named Rod Voss offered to use his tractor to flatten out the piles on one side of the new ditch that is running east and west.  And this was just after Mr. Strachan had visited and offered to do the very same thing later this Fall.  That was dang nice of Mr. Voss, and I offered to pay him something, but he said he didn't need anything because he was just having fun.  That was an awesome gesture on his part.  So today I think I'm going to go out and work on some weeds.

I had a fasting day yesterday.  And I even grilled steaks and pork chops and still had a fasting day.  I'll have plenty of proteins to eat today and this week.  I also had a little pool time and did a little exercise.  I think this morning I'm going to resistance train a bit and then head out with the weed wacker.  Later today we are headed to Mr. Strachan's for a little party for Carrie and Tucker - sort of a going away party, I guess.  

Oh, last night I watched the Bears game, which helped me keep my mind off of food.

7:28 a.m. - I got a lot done yesterday at school; unfortunately, that was mostly at my desk, so I didn't get much exercise.  I'm really going to have to refocus and reenergize my efforts to drop some weight.  I think today is going to be a fasting day.

The heat is coming...today the temp is supposed to reach 90 degrees, and this will be the coolest day all of next week.  Rockridge Schools have already called an early dismissal for all five days next week.  Schools are going to be released at 1:30 p.m.  The only problem I'm going to have with that is getting a writing sample from students, but I think it's still doable.  I don't think I've ever seen a forecast with those kinds of temps all week long in August.

I guess I did get a little exercise yesterday when I mowed the lawn.  Obviously there isn't much exercise on the riding mower, but we have some push mowing that has to be done where I can't get the rider, plus, I usually have some trim around the edges to get with the push mower.

6:08 a.m. -  This week has been a long one.  Students received chromebooks yesterday, so now we can get up and running a bit.  I typically have "housekeeping" items for awhile at the beginning of the school year before any "work" really gets going.  Yesterday after school I basically did nothing.  I avoided the yard again even though it needs mowed.  I even got a grumble from Amber, but by waiting maybe I can avoid having to mow the yard next week when my officiating and umpiring schedule gets busier.  Let's just get through today and get to a couple of days off!

Yesterday after school I contemplated mowing the yard, but I'm going to try to let it go a little longer.  I may do it tonight, though.  I'd really like to wait until the weekend, but that may not happen.

5:41 a.m. - Divine intervention must have been involved, so somehow I got through the Illinois and Iowa volleyball tests with good enough scores.  I can now officially be an "average-at-best" volleyball official.  That capped off a day that was productive.  I was able to get many things accomplished at school around our district meeting and luncheon.  Our new Superintendent, Mr. Bush, was admittedly nervous, but he did just fine with his efforts.  For all practical purposes, I'm ready for students to arrive today.  I didn't sleep very well, but that really wasn't related to school stuff.  Oh, and I had a softball game at Mercer County that went just fine.

Tuesday, August 15

6:15 a.m. - So it was back to school yesterday and the new backpack night.  It wasn't exactly a stellar start.  I walked up to the school getting most of the way there only to discover I had forgotten my keys.  I then walked back home to get my keys, entered the building, only to find out I was late for the day - the meeting and in-service had started at 8 a.m. in the cafeteria.  I was only a couple of minutes late, but late is still late, so it was irresponsible and embarrassing.  The inservice was sort of a neat way to start the school year as far as "ice-breaker things", but four hours of "relationship building" techniques was hard on my brain after awhile.  Awhile ago there was a big model called P.B.I.S. which basically rewarded students for following expectations and encouraging positive behavior and connections with other students.  This "model" is called restorative practices, but essentially it's a relationship building model and model for conflict resolution.  I'm not saying it's bad stuff; it's actually pretty good stuff.  What it isn't is "new stuff".  It's good practice wrapped in different terminology and perhaps a different order with perhaps new and creative implementation ideas.  I suppose at my age, nothing is really "new" anymore, so I'm not criticizing the presenter nor the information.  I think a couple of hours instead of four perhaps would have helped.

I did get to see the building improvements that were touted last spring to be awesome...I don't see anything awesome.  Maybe there will be more of an effect when furniture arrives.  I am glad I'm not a lunchroom supervisor, so I will count my blessings.  

Today....get more stuff done at school in preparation of students arriving tomorrow.  I think today is a full day, and then I have junior high softball at Mercer County.  The weather appears to be improving...dry and reasonable temps for a couple of days and then warming up for the weekend.  

Oh...and former President Trump was indicted...again for the now fourth time - this time in Georgia.  The indictment also went after several of his friends, which was interesting.  I'm no expert with legal matters, but it appeared to be "everything and the kitchen sink".  Of course it's a "witch hunt" according to Mr. Trump.  And it's "weaponization" of the justice system.  And it's Joe Biden trying to take out a political rival.  With all the Hunter Biden stuff continuing to swell, I just wonder if/when the republicans will make a break with Mr. Trump and just move on.  He sure is spending a lot of time and money on legal defense issues, so I hope all his donors are happy with where their money is going.
