7:43 a.m. - December 31 means tomorrow is 2024.  Yesterday was fine.  Neither game was "easy", but we got through them.  I got home in time to see the Harrison kids here for a bit, which was nice.  I don't think I'm going to church today...probably will start working on then fan motor replacement in the bathroom.  

I don't expect things to be crazy for New Year's Eve.  I'll probably head over to Aunt Mary's and see folks there for a bit and then get off the roads and get home.  I hope to see Carmen sometime next week.

7:17 a.m. - I woke up and got my checkbook balanced today.  After most of the holiday break over, the finances aren't looking too awful, which is a good thing.  I do need to pick up a couple of things at Lowe's, but that will probably get done tomorrow.

Today...two more basketball games, but we finally get paid for the work at the Erie-Prophetstown tournament.  That check, along with the others before break will also help out the bank account.  Then it's a few more days rest before returning to school and returning to the rest of the basketball season.

Friday, December 29

7:11 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day.  We had two games, and one of the games featured working with an official in his first varsity game.  Josh Temple worked with us, and he's just getting started in basketball.  He knows Marcus well, and he's a superintendent at Riverdale.  He'd be a very good fit for our crew, and he looked like he had fun.  Because of other conflicts, he's going to work with us today and tomorrow again too.  It's always a feeling of accomplishment for me to get someone else going in officiating (or umpiring).  I feel like it's my opportunity to give back and thank all the people who helped me get a start.  

I need to get a few things done today before heading out to today's games.  I need to get the Christmas tree down and put away along with all the decorations.  I think there are a few light bulbs to replace too.

Thursday, December 28

7:46 a.m. - Yesterday went fine...I got some things done at school, and I got the truck filled up with gas after taking Xmas gifts for the camper over to the camper.  I miss that camper.  It was good for me to get back on the court, even if our game wasn't the greatest.

Wednesday, December 27

7:29 a.m.  - I was able to sleep in a little today.  I woke up at 5 a.m., but then I fell back to sleep on the coach listening to the morning news.  Yesterday, we went to the casino and still didn't do very well...it hasn't been a very productive gambling break, so I'm thinking it's time to take a break from that activity.  It was nice to have lunch with Kenzie and Darrin and Karrigan, and at least Kenzie and Darrin were winners!  I also did head over to the parents' house and got down some hay for mom before we ventured out to the casino.  

Today it's the beginning of a start to return to normal functioning - I'm officiating at Erie with Tony and Marcus.  We only have one game, which will be nice.  I'm going to be huffing and puffing after putting on some Christmas pounds and shutting down my legs for the last four days.  I think I might go to the school and get some schoolwork done this morning.  I think Amber told me she was going to be running some errands and then meeting a friend for lunch.

Tuesday, December 26

7:26 a.m. - Yesterday I visited with Darren and Mom and Dad at the farm before Darren left.  Then Amber and I went and visited Jack and Rhonda and Adam at Jack and Rhonda's house for lunch.  After that, we played some euchre and then went to the casino.  Once again, my casino efforts weren't very good.  Then we came home and I watched a couple of movies - The Family Stone and Meet Me In St. Louis.

I tried to get some extra sleep today, but that didn't work out too well.  Today, I think we are headed back to the casino but with Kenzie and Darrin.  We don't get to do much with them, so that will be fun.  I think we are going to eat lunch at the sports bar and then play a little.  I don't know what the rest of the day will bring.  

I'm just glad to see December 26 and put Christmas 2023 in the rearview mirror.

Tomorrow I have a the first basketball game to officiate since December 21, so at least I'll be back on the court doing something.  I think I've gained ten pounds, so that should be interesting.

Monday, December 25

5:42 a.m. - Merry Christmas.  "I'm dreaming of ... Christmas just like the ones I used to know...may your days be merry and bright..."  My days will be merry and bright when Christmas is over...it just hasn't worked out very well for me this year, and honestly, I think I need to rethink Christmas, so I can be happier for others in the future.  I need to take the joy and fun and love that I had hoped to feel and just set it aside, so that I can help others.

So on this Christmas Day, I wish for peace, and I wish for good will, and I wish for grace. And I wish for me to rethink and reshape my Christmas futures to avoid the disappointment and frustration that surfaced in Christmas 2023.  Avoid looking inward so much; set my sights on helping others.

Sunday, December 24 - Happy Birthday Mom!

6:46 a.m. - Yesterday was good and bad.  The day started with Amber and I heading over to Davenport for some last minute shopping things.  While there we went to the Rhythm City Casino, and we didn't win but didn't lose.  There weren't many people yet, so we were able to play a lot of machines that were new.  After that we headed to a couple other little shopping stops and then got home.  From there I took gifts over to my mom's and visited with mom and dad and Darren and Kaylee and Emily.  Then it was back home and later in the afternoon, Amber decided we should go to Bally's for buffet and slots...again there we didn't win but didn't lose much.  And then at night I just watched some football and basketball on television.  Sometime during the day, I learned from Cole that Chase got himself into trouble and ended up in jail.  Unfortunately, that's not a big surprise, but I'll choose not to elaborate.  When it comes to Christmas and my children, Christmas has been a struggle and mix of emotions.  

Today is Christmas with the Kiddoo girls and their families.  Later this afternoon, I'll attend a church service with my mom, and then we'll head over to her house for sandwiches and oyster soup.  It's my mom's birthday too.  I must say that during my lifetime, she's been the constant in my life.  She's tough and caring all at the same time.

Tomorrow on Christmas day, things will actually all be wrapped up - no pun intended.  There won't be much of a celebration of Christmas, although we will head over to Jack and Rhonda's and play some cards and have supper and then likely head to the casino.  Christmas 2023 will be in the books.
